You failed to mention that the ZR2 axles are wider than the standard chassis axles. The stick-shift L35 would be the only option if you wanted a standard width axle with the 8.5" ring gear.
I found a 2wd 8.5 rear end at our local junkyard. Came out of a 02 4.3 5 speed standard cab s10. Traded a catalytic converter for it. Had a open 3.08 gear with drum brakes. Kept the 3.08s bit swapped in a Yukon dura grip posi with all new bearings. Plan on swapping over to disk brakes when i can find the parking brake brackets for a good deal.
My 2002 crew cab sanoma apparently has one because today I went and got the 7.625 rear diff gasket it was the wrong one I had to go back and get the 8.5 it is a g80 GT4 373 gears. I've been scratching my head trying to figure out if this axle has been changed because I want to rebuild it.

The ONLY way to know is to look under(very easy) and to check for bulged housing tubes, and flat casting teeth on the bottom, and 8.5 cover is much more round. Ive checked 11+ different 5 speed 4.3 1999+ trucks and NONE had an 8.5...the 12th one i found was a 4x4 but it was smashed and rear end destroyed...theyre RARE
Mine is 98 s10 standard zq8 edition and I figured it out by the rear end cover. After watching your video it would have made life a lot easier. My gamble was right though.

Yes, 8.5 inch and would smoke the tires all the way through 1st gear and then lock and chirp 2nd. Car was made in Shreveport Louisiana. Long bed standard cab LS WITH AC AND 15 INCH ALLOY WHEELS.. rated at 210 hp.
September 7th, 2023. Western Washington State. If anybody is interested, there is a black 1999 2 door 4.3 V6 4WD Blazer in the Lynnwood Pick-n-Pull with an 8.5/8.6 disc brake rearend in it. Blazer has an automatic transmission so it shouldn't be there, but it is the real thing. I spotted it about 3 weeks back, so it won't be there much longer. If it was a 2WD I would have already pulled it out, someone should grab this before it goes to the crusher.

The "most desirable" rear end, as described, comes from a 2wd standard S-10. What is the width of this axle? Are all 2wd axles the same width? Are they different by years or drum/disk option? On a side rant, why would GM make a 4x4 and put open differentials in both the front and the rear? Isn't this false advertising? This makes a 4x4 only a two wheel drive vehicle. I'm kinda pissed I have a 2000 Blazer LS 4X4 with crappy open diff's. Thanks GM :(

I just went to change my rear bearing on my S10, I drained the differential and four pinion gear cogs were laying in the bottom of the pan. Fuck me🙁. I found a rear end with 111,000 miles on it for 250 bucks.

I have a 1999 Chevy Blazer LS 4X4 4 Door 4 Disc Brake and I talked to Bill Gatton Chevrolet and they claim I have a 8.5/8.625 based on my VIN, but I'm not a hundred percent sure on that because it doesn't look like a circle to me, but I could be wrong I really need help on this to really determine if I have 7.5/7.625 or 8.5/8.625.
It also came with dual piston calipers up front and rear disc brakes which I was impressed with. I know my buddies Sonoma had drums in the rear and single piston calipers upfront

Should have had a 4l60e with 3.06:1 first gear. Coupled with 3:42 rear gear don't look like it could wind-up that much.

I have a 2001 zr2 s10 auto with wide stance and the flares that means I got the 8 1/2 in rear.
I own a 2002 factory 5 speed 4.3 2dr 2wd Blazer, 4 wheel disc brakes, and 7.625 rear axle factory.. That 5 speed 2wd 2dr 8.5 is not always the case..
6cyl with the 5 speed will allow you to choose the POSI 8.5 as opinion if desired

You were given wrong information. Four door Blazers all have 7.5" rear ends. It wasn't an option.

Yes, you have a 7.5". A ZR2 will bolt in, but is about 2" wider on each side
