  • I have been carrying a Leatherman Tool for 25 years now. I use the SURGE most. It is the right size for me, and has the right combination of tools used often use. BUT I have always hated to have to cary the tool in a sheath I like the idea of keeping it my front pocket. It is designed to take an optional clip, but this clip is not symmetrical and the tool often is hanging to one side. Not to mention the clip simply breaks off. I thought of the mod to solve these problems. I use my TIG welder to attach a clip to both sides or handles of the tool. the 2 sides come together to form a larger curve to make hooking it easy and simple. The fact the curve of the clip opens and closes also gives you the ability to use it like a “caribbener” and clip it on to a strap for instance. I put scrap steel into the handle under the welds to act as a heat sink to keep from melting through. I am not the best welder but I get the job done. This is my second modded Surge I did for camera. my first has been holding strong for over a year. Enjoy
    ENJOY!

The moment you welded the clip to both sides I was thinking "wtf..." and when I saw the jewelers saw it was totaly obvious.
Cool project and great video, thanks for sharing!

Brilliant. At first, I thought you were crazy, but something in me said wait, see where he goes with it. I'm glad I saw it though. I wouldn't have thought of that. I have to admit, you usually expand my thinking. I admire your creativity.

For a minute there I was like " what are you doing!" But I'm proud to say I thought of the same solution as you did. Great minds think alike! Still an ingenious way to do it all the same. I'm liking all the tool/ knife mods recently. Keep up the good work !

Thanks to you I no longer "Jerry rig" things, I "Jimmy rig" them. Which not only means that I thought outside of the box and made something from nothing, but I also made it to the best of my abilities. Thanks for all the inspiration. I look at my tools, shop and world a little differently because of you. Thanks, "Rt"

Okay...so I first see the thumbnail and the clip looks CONNECTED so I was like "That's stupid. Now you cant open the damn thing."
but then you sawed it in half. this is the coolest pocket clip for a multi tool. Cool build, again.

As I was watching I kept thinking 'how is he going to open that?', then you cut the bottom of the loop with the saw and I was like 'oh, that's how.' Looks really cool, I kinda wish they all had something like that now!

Jimmy, I owe you an apology.
For a moment I thought you were bunkers, but then you cut the loop with a hacksaw. Genius.
I've got a Surge too. With the leather pouch.
Added a lot of extra stuff to it.
Added a loop-clip to it, to hook it up to a lanyard on my belt.
So I can't lose it when working as a sailor.

I have recently subscribed to your channel because I enjoy your style, skill and creativity. You have a fan in Australia in me. I think a lot of your negative comments derive from a lack of knowledge from those that have no idea what Ad Hoc means when you are demonstrating your creativity. Ad hoc is a word that originally comes from Latin and means “for this” or "for this situation. It comes with no prerequisite for quality. I have an engineering academic background at University and I gave it all up and now work in custom fabrication, construction and maintenance, cos fuck living behind a desk, I do what you do and what you do is perfectly fine when it comes to getting the job done, and that is essentially the criteria for a mechanical engineer- to make shit work, form and function are secondary or tertiary but not forgotten.
