- I have been carrying a Leatherman Tool for 25 years now. I use the SURGE most. It is the right size for me, and has the right combination of tools used often use. BUT I have always hated to have to cary the tool in a sheath I like the idea of keeping it my front pocket. It is designed to take an optional clip, but this clip is not symmetrical and the tool often is hanging to one side. Not to mention the clip simply breaks off. I thought of the mod to solve these problems. I use my TIG welder to attach a clip to both sides or handles of the tool. the 2 sides come together to form a larger curve to make hooking it easy and simple. The fact the curve of the clip opens and closes also gives you the ability to use it like a “caribbener” and clip it on to a strap for instance. I put scrap steel into the handle under the welds to act as a heat sink to keep from melting through. I am not the best welder but I get the job done. This is my second modded Surge I did for camera. my first has been holding strong for over a year. Enjoy
ENJOY!

The moment you welded the clip to both sides I was thinking "wtf..." and when I saw the jewelers saw it was totaly obvious.
Cool project and great video, thanks for sharing!

Brilliant. At first, I thought you were crazy, but something in me said wait, see where he goes with it. I'm glad I saw it though. I wouldn't have thought of that. I have to admit, you usually expand my thinking. I admire your creativity.
Love it how someone can be so skilled at something they love doing so much and on top of that also entertains so many people just by doing what they do best. Jimmy you are the best keep em coming those videos!
For a minute there I was like " what are you doing!" But I'm proud to say I thought of the same solution as you did. Great minds think alike! Still an ingenious way to do it all the same. I'm liking all the tool/ knife mods recently. Keep up the good work !
Thanks to you I no longer "Jerry rig" things, I "Jimmy rig" them. Which not only means that I thought outside of the box and made something from nothing, but I also made it to the best of my abilities. Thanks for all the inspiration. I look at my tools, shop and world a little differently because of you. Thanks, "Rt"
I would like to invite everyone here at Jimmy's channel to come on over and take a look around our channel. You may like it. Thanks, "Rt"
We LIKE it, we LIKE it!!
Okay...so I first see the thumbnail and the clip looks CONNECTED so I was like "That's stupid. Now you cant open the damn thing."
but then you sawed it in half. this is the coolest pocket clip for a multi tool. Cool build, again.
As I was watching I kept thinking 'how is he going to open that?', then you cut the bottom of the loop with the saw and I was like 'oh, that's how.' Looks really cool, I kinda wish they all had something like that now!
I just had an epiphany on a project I'd been trying to solve for a while. You're use of the welding rod, brilliant!!
This is the epitome of coolness. You can even hang them while they are open, awesome Mr. Diresta. Tnx for sharing!!!
Jimmy, I owe you an apology.
For a moment I thought you were bunkers, but then you cut the loop with a hacksaw. Genius.
I've got a Surge too. With the leather pouch.
Added a lot of extra stuff to it.
Added a loop-clip to it, to hook it up to a lanyard on my belt.
So I can't lose it when working as a sailor.
Very nice! I have used a Leatherman tool for years and yes a good clip would have been very handy. I gave my teenager one and he complains it fall out of his pocket all the time :)
I hope Leatherman sees this video.
....thinking outside the box is the only way to do things now a days, with everything punched out of molds anymore, makes it refreshing to see a new twist on everyday items....yes Surge is everyday item to some.......slamming work as usual!
MR DIRESTA, YOU ARE CRAZY!!!! CRAZY IN THE BEST WAY!!!! I THINK THE SURGE IS THES BEST LEATHERMAN TOOL!!!
Have u tried the wave??
Ok! I just got myself a Leatherman. Now I just need a TIG Welder to make this happen! I envy your ingenuity so much, Jimmy! Thank you for sharing another cool project.
That's a nice, strong weld! All those complaining about the "looks" of the weld?!?! They can jump in a lake! It's beautiful, as always!
+Samuel Luria We got a real fan over here lol
Not ashamed.
+Samuel Luria respect!! thank you
I find the lack of your logo on it disturbing
mémdíler hilarious, touché
ANY dude who speaks in Vader references is my brother \m/,
You never know how well or not so well something is going to work out untill you actually try it... Cool video.
You make this shit look too easy. Every time I watch a video I'm like "oh ill go build blah blah." Never ends up right. You got talent my man.
This is the best addition to a Leatherman that I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing and thanks for giving me a reason to break out the welder to do the the same.
Well?? Did you???
Really cool- and simpler than I would've thought! Thanks, Jimmy!
That's Awesome - Ive found that the small pocket on the right side of most jeans fits this tool perfect.
I love how you see a problem and just make a solution. my favorite chanel by far.
Even the way he threw away the sheath for me was very entertaining already! 😄👍
this guy makes some amazing stuff. wish i lived close to come work there for free to give a hand and learn some techniques. I have learned a lot just by watching and it has helped me see things in a new way.
You have a way of simplifying problems by looking at them from an unusual angle. Very original solution. Might just have to try this one.
Nicely done! I like how simple and clean the mod looks. That seam is tight! I practically disappears!
Nice! I carry a Surge and have for several years. The belt pouch that comes with them is a pain in the butt, I like this idea.
Looking at the thumbnail : "How did you even use the pliers...?"
Watched at 4:11 : "Ahh, mystery solved."
Anyone else that love the cosy feeling of watching diresta while hungover?:)
Recently finding your channel has been my biggest UA-cam achievement to date, you are an inspiration and I hope to one day be as skilled as you are with such a impressive workshop!
Jake Martin haha thank you jake!!
Jake Martin my favorite channel, or up there with Slingshot Channel :P
banduk dusri. hai dijiana. plese plese. plese
Another great video! Simple but elegant. And very manly because we all love our mini-tools.
You SIR are a "G". Your skills are amazing and have inspired me to go build stuff.
The whole video I was like: Wait he is not going to be able to use that. How is he not seeing that? Until you cut the piece apart... Stupid Me. Love your videos Jimmy. Keep on bringing us amazing content. Best Wishes from Germany.
Nice again. Have the same surge dont have tig yet. Allways Nice to see you uploaded a new one. Thanks Jimmy for wat you do and have fun doing it. Greetings from the Netherlands Amsterdam
Very cool. In my latest video I told Leatherman they should make a clip for the OHT. That would be something.
Living Survival
i think attaching it to the screws would've been better , cleaner
What if you had to take it apart?

Once again Jimmy, you amaze me with your creativity! Nice job!
Just when I thought....you can't open it.....Ah hA! You never cease to surprise me, sir.
Great work Jimmy. all the best Harry
Excellent, I don't go anywhere without my leatherman wave. However I've been through a few of the clips already. Don't see this one breaking. Very nice!
I love this. Wish I had the tools needed to do this.
Very nice. The work arounds are greatly appreciated!
Nice, decorative yet functional.
frank howarth decorative? imho this is pure function over form.
Spitfire83 I think it looks good. I'd buy one like this.
Thank you frank!!
Spitfire83 If you think there is no form to this, you missed something. Try thinking of the easiest way to accomplish a clip for a Leatherman and you'll find a necessarily less attractive solution immediately.
kevohh10 they edgy gcd ex fdt
,
Brilliant. I've had the same Surge for three years and I use it every day. I'd love to try this mod & shed the sheath.
Tight!!!
👊🏼
I started following you because of you're buddy who made a belt knife for you asked me too, both of you are awsome. From new mexico thanks
plese
that was very ingenious Jimmy great job
By the way he didn't ruin that surge he actually turned it into a unique piece and showed leatherman how it is done :)
I have recently subscribed to your channel because I enjoy your style, skill and creativity. You have a fan in Australia in me. I think a lot of your negative comments derive from a lack of knowledge from those that have no idea what Ad Hoc means when you are demonstrating your creativity. Ad hoc is a word that originally comes from Latin and means “for this” or "for this situation. It comes with no prerequisite for quality. I have an engineering academic background at University and I gave it all up and now work in custom fabrication, construction and maintenance, cos fuck living behind a desk, I do what you do and what you do is perfectly fine when it comes to getting the job done, and that is essentially the criteria for a mechanical engineer- to make shit work, form and function are secondary or tertiary but not forgotten.
Thank you for the love and respect!
I feel this is much more elegant than Adam Savage's belt holster from Tested. Great job!
Haha! I saw this a while ago on instagram! Nicely done, and I've been enjoying the podcasts lately!
Beautiful work Jimmy. The TIG shots look really cool with the new camera.
Love it!!! simple and clean cut,
i got the notification on my phone the JD uploaded a new video so i dropped everything and logged on to watch it ASAP
Dude my pants would drop to my knees with that many EDC goodies stuffed in my pockets. Loved the vid.
I was like hmm I wonder how you are going to open that now... never fear when Jimmy is near! lol
Nice! I'm not sure how it looks in person, but in video the clip, when together, looks seamless, as if it was just one piece. Great Mod.
Also, thanks for the mail, got it today! much appreciated.
Hey Jimmy, it looks like the 57 employees from Leatherman dislike this video because they didn't think of this idea. One of them was they guy who designed the case.
I like how the clip you made matches the design of the rest of the tool. It looks like it belongs on the surge.
+Odood19 Man yeah! MULTITOOLS FOR THE WIN :D
Excellent build! One thing though, I would have opened all the tools and kept it cool so it wouldn't ruin the temper.
It could be a little Sally of me but that's what I thought.
Great video! Thanks jimmy!
Leatherman is like damn why we didn't think of that. Good job brother.
Excellent idea! I too wondered how it would open when I saw the pics on Instagram. Now I know!
Beautiful build, Diresta! I really thought you wrecked it until I saw you cutting it. Love the idea, man! :]
Cool and simple!
Amigo, ficou muito legal esta adaptação que você fez. Parabéns! Abraço. Rio de Janeiro Brasil
Dude this is literally the best UA-cam channel ever..... You hiring lol
Good on you, genius work and the highest of craftsmanship. Just a pleasure to watch. Thanks for sharing.
Modded right out of the package. Nice editing choice.
metalworking and carpentry are such amazingly useful skills.
Very clean work!
Your action with the supplied sheath was appropriate...and humerous.
That's the coolest thing I'm gonna see today
That is so clean, i love it! Thanks for sharing, Jimmy! Now i gotta get a super skinny little coping saw
This is awesome! Nice work.
Cool..Love the clip and Surge model also, Thanks J
I was super confused until 4 minutes in you cut it in half. Ohhhhhhhh. Now I get how it's not just a paperweight.
Very slick, man. Very slick.
Finally another Jimmy Video, thanks.
I need to build myself one of those. Awesome video!
Leathermans don't really need another way to pinch your hands, but if it works for you...
Leathermen?
@@MrMrRubic i mean its your choice on how to spell the plural
@@MrMrRubic No it actually would be "Leathermans" The founders name is "Leatherman" . Sooo... If there was "Mr and Mrs Leatherman with their son Junior".. .they as a grouping would be the "Leathermans" not the "Leathermen." We're not making a plural family , just plural tools. It might look/sound wack but in this case "Leathermans" is correct.
@@HBSuccess but the product isn't a person so I'm not sure it applies, it's named after a person
So true lol 😂
Classy job. Leatherman should offer the option.
He's my Hero, no sweet talking, just do it!
A brilliant idea and job!
thats a cool idea! i always thot that case they come with was a waste too. in my head i was watching and thinking it wasnt going to open, until you cut it in half and then i thought it a pure genius! hahaha
I was wondering where you was going with that and then you pull a rabbit out the Hat lol lol and I love it great idea
So good! Love it!
Excelente iniciativa brother....felicitaciones !!!!
You keep going and you are going to need suspenders to hold your britches up.
I have to get me a one of those tools.
cut-off bib overalls worn shirtless and perhaps boxer/brief-less (for the ladies and dc contingent) All the pockets you could need and straps deforming your traps. Be like skinny dipping in the shop with all the tools you can muster; probably not a good idea around the Zeus department.
When he was about to weld directly to the Leathermans, I was thinking "well this is is going to interesting." I have mountains of faith in Jimmy, it just set off that little OCD-ish _what the hell is going on right now_ bell in my head. I think its a really slick idea though.
u should make your own leather work belt then clip all the things u need on it instead of your pants pockets I watch your videos all the time your very talented at what u do
You had us wondering for awhile until you cut the loop... nice left turn there Jimmy
R.I.P Leatherman.
Leatherman will sooner or later hire you for something. Good job :)
The whole time i was thinking to my self, "well how the heck is he gonna open it.... ohhh" i just dont think that far ahead. =)
xALLSTARx00
lol jimmy when you put it in your pocket i laughed so hard
DAMN! the stuff you do is so goooooooood!!!
Very good work man.
Great work...
Simplicity at its best.
Love how you throw the crappy Velcro holder....first thing everyone should do before getting a quality leather holster (or your clip)... subbed!
I like it. It sparked another idea for just one prong with a ring at the end, a bit like a pen clip. Now I just have to go learn to weld. And buy a Leatherman.
mind blowing idea for a clip
