I Ate at an Indian "Diet Centre." What's Is It?!?

  • Is this the healthiest meal in India? I went to an Indian Ahaar Kendra or Diet Centre to see what food is served and find out why it's so healthy. This restaurant is located across the road from Gandhi's final ashram in Sevagram, Maharashtra.
Satvik food is a dietary concept rooted in Ayurveda and Hindu philosophy, emphasizing purity, balance, and simplicity in eating habits. It is a vegetarian cuisine that promotes foods believed to have a calming and harmonizing effect on the body and mind.
Satvik food avoids the consumption of garlic, onions, and certain pungent spices, as they are thought to stimulate desires and disturb mental clarity. Instead, it encourages the intake of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, dairy products, and mild spices.
The underlying principle is to cultivate a sense of inner peace, spiritual awareness, and overall well-being through a diet that aligns with a sattvic (pure and balanced) lifestyle, avoiding foods perceived as Rajasic (stimulating) or Tamasic (dulling).

Hey Karl, there is a Jain temple near the Maharashtra border called Muktagiri. It's located in the jungle, and you have to climb some steps to reach it. There are multiple temples at the top, and the food there is Satvik and quite good. I suggest that you consider visiting some Jain temples as well. Just remember not to consume any non-vegetarian food for at least 24 hours before your visit.

I watched 2 recipe videos from India today and they both came with such an interesting history and back story, I was not expecting that at all. In America it's just like.. "Yeah, that's food. Eat it" - I love the focus on tradition in India, and how much almost EVERYONE seems to remember and respect the past. (Or atleast, much more than most Americans I know..) - It's really beautiful that history can be so deep in something like a meal.

Bajra, jowar, nachani or ragi, samaa ka chawal are all millets. Traditionally, very little wheat was grown or consumed in India. It was the British who brought in wheat for bread.
Millets are very nutritious, gluten free, easy to digest super foods. Fortunately, thanks to our PM, we are going back to our roots, recognising the food value in & cooking millets frequently now. We need to learn to make modern dishes & gourmet food with millets too, besides the traditional ways of having them. Millets can also be had in the form of papads & sevs.

This is a super under-rated location and video, Saatvik food in a local chain is a spectacular experience for us city folks , but you getting to experience and also explain the meaning of it with such clarity to the world is a wonderful thing.
Village food is sooo sooo underated , it is very satiating and something we always look forward to.
the other youtubers mostly video heavy butter chicken naan and roadside stuff but India just understands food.
I really hope this is content that comes from some youtubers and this is an experience i would love many westerners should try go for a non super touristy place and have simple food , its a very different experience!!

Hello Karl! great job in bringing out this aspect of India. Although there is one correction. ‘Aahar’ literally translates to food in marathi. Sevagram is famous for its charitable causes and helping the poor. You might find similar NGO run restaurants in Maharashtra often. They are not diet centres but affordable food centres mainly for people on budget (daily wage workers, students, travellers etc.) The rates are regulated and are at least 50% less than outside. They have nothing to do with ‘diet’ as such. I used to eat regularly in one of these when I was in college. 15 rupees breakfast and 25 rupees for meal. Hope it helps!

Karl and everyone kaise ho? Ashram food is great because it follows satvik tradition. That means basically super light on spices, especially hot spices. An ashram doesn't use garlic nor onions in their food preparation and they offer it to Bagwan before distributing it to people. The browner the chapati or roti is, the healthier it is. If it's very white, it ain't healthy. It's all pure vegetarian. Great vlog buddy. Jai Hind!

The thing with the flies and other insects is that -- they are a sign that there is still order in that part of the world. They fill important ecological roles and have their place in nature's cycles. Try to eliminate them and you will fill the food, air and soil with harmful toxins, and cause a butterfly effect resulting in chaos that you won't even know about until years later and it will be too late to reverse. I like how you said you just learned to live with them. This is the way!

Sounds like Fit For Life by The Diamond Couple. Natural Therapy. Don't mix meat and carbs, (infact, forget meat) don't over cook your vegetables, consider the "type of food" you are eating, as how long it takes to empty from your tummy is important, so it doesn't ferment there. Fruit on empty stomach. Heavier meals later in the day.
