      @@KarlRock RPF = Railways police Force. You can always get in touch with them in any need or problem while travelling in trains. In some areas, they're on rounds in trains and if women are travelling alone, they ask them about being alright and feel safe. I'd advise all foreigners who plan to travel in trains in India, to be in touch with RPF. They really help.

    We recently travelled 9 hours on the train from Kolkata north to Jamalpur. Seats one way and sleeper on the way back. 9 hours was as long as I would do in seats. The overnight sleeper was very good. You sleep in your clothes but you get blankets and pillows. Quite comfortable actually. We all locked our bags and padlocked them the to the bunk under blankets. If you are starting from a decent hotel I recommend asking your hotel if they can make up a food parcel for the trip. Some trains have an Indian style WC at one end and Western style WC at the other. You often get approached by people when out and about in India. Frequently they want to sell you something but you do also get people who are just curious to know where you are from. The trick is working out which they are. Personally I'd steer clear of the dogs (fleas). For some trips a taxi is a good idea. We took one from Delhi Airport to Agra, a trip of about 3 hours. If you are in a small group to share the cost its a lot more convenient than going into Delhi to get the train.

    • @notauser383
      @notauser383 Рік тому

      @@tubester4567 Yes that is indeed true lol, but the money is mostly spent here on infrastructure and improving it, as it is a rural station, they cannot have a toilet cleaner in the station as it it small...however there are staff to clean the toilets at major station and airports...sometimes even rural stations...plus India is big, according to the latest data, it has the largest population in the world and with more 50 million people travelling by rail, it is clearly uneasy to maintain the toilets. That is the reality.

    hi! i'm going backpacking in india for the first time soon. i hear different things about travelling by train during december/january because it's high season now. is it really almost impossible to buy tickets for a train route a few days before? i have roughly a route but ofc also travelling spontaneously, so it's not possible for me to buy train tickets long long time in advance. is it naive to try buy tickets at the station a few days in advance (like 2 to 3 days..)? i've read different things from "no problem spontaneously" to "buy tickets months in advance" so i'm a bit confused.. maybe someone can tell me from his experiences around those months? otherwise i'll figure it out anyway :-)

      If you don't get in tatkal take in premium tatkal.
      You should do it at exact 10am. There will be bit of competition for it. Check various coaches like 3rd ac 2nd Ac and 1st AC.

      Its a few years since I travelled on Indian Railways but I never bought months in advance (usually the week before) though I did usually go sleeper class . The couple of times I did get stuck - I remember going to current reservations counter and managing to pick up a ticket on the day from up near the Nepalese border to Delhi - the other time I wanted to go from Rishikesh to Varanasi or Delhi and it was fully booked but if I looked at a station a couple of stops down the line there was availability - just went unreserved to that station, that was a fun experience!

    How long, in advance, did you have to book this train ticket?

    • @KarlRock
      @KarlRock  Рік тому +2

      I book as far as I can. But foreigner quota tickets are usually available even a few days before the train. No one uses them it seems.

      Yes. Take foreigner quota. If not available there's special quota like Tatkal and premium tatkal which opens one day prior at 10am.
      Book right at 10am because they will get sold out soon.
