@@KarlRock RPF = Railways police Force. You can always get in touch with them in any need or problem while travelling in trains. In some areas, they're on rounds in trains and if women are travelling alone, they ask them about being alright and feel safe. I'd advise all foreigners who plan to travel in trains in India, to be in touch with RPF. They really help.
We found the same in Kolkata. If out exploring you will get approached by people either wanting to sell you something, take you to a friends business or just wishing to say hello and find out where you are from. The tricky bit is working out which they are quickly :-)

Karl you missed the most important app for train travel, that is Rail Yatri, you can track live location of the train, as well as all the details regarding halt time at each stations as well, also you can order food from the app as well
We recently travelled 9 hours on the train from Kolkata north to Jamalpur. Seats one way and sleeper on the way back. 9 hours was as long as I would do in seats. The overnight sleeper was very good. You sleep in your clothes but you get blankets and pillows. Quite comfortable actually. We all locked our bags and padlocked them the to the bunk under blankets. If you are starting from a decent hotel I recommend asking your hotel if they can make up a food parcel for the trip. Some trains have an Indian style WC at one end and Western style WC at the other. You often get approached by people when out and about in India. Frequently they want to sell you something but you do also get people who are just curious to know where you are from. The trick is working out which they are. Personally I'd steer clear of the dogs (fleas). For some trips a taxi is a good idea. We took one from Delhi Airport to Agra, a trip of about 3 hours. If you are in a small group to share the cost its a lot more convenient than going into Delhi to get the train.

Same rules apply here in South Africa. When on trains especially, dont put anything in your back pocket. Alot of the regular train riders here, put their backpacks on the front of them. As pick-pockets will open ur bags zip especially when all crampet together at peak times
Hosapete is a city known for industries, in Karnataka Karl bhai, not a rural area. Also, fun fact: I don't know about foreigners, but Railways prohibits Indian rail enthusiasts to shoot photos/videos of locomotives in the station premises, sighting security issues.

And Karl when your in platform you can always ask RPF cops where your coach will halt. Just tell them your train & coach number. They have the list of all trains updated on daily basis. Tough is for their other official purpose, but they don't mind helping.
RPF is Railways Protection Force governed under Central ministry. Not Rashtriya police rifles. They are specially stationed to provide security assistance in indian railways.
India is not different. It is glad to be in this country...even the traffic is funky in the country but that is what makes India a great place to live it. Wish you knew that how much pollution it is there in Delhi right now...would be great if you would visit the Rapid Transit in Delhi! I have been using it since I was little.
@@tubester4567 Yes that is indeed true lol, but the money is mostly spent here on infrastructure and improving it, as it is a rural station, they cannot have a toilet cleaner in the station as it it small...however there are staff to clean the toilets at major station and airports...sometimes even rural stations...plus India is big, according to the latest data, it has the largest population in the world and with more 50 million people travelling by rail, it is clearly uneasy to maintain the toilets. That is the reality.
Very good practical advice ,I travelled most of India by train in the late 70s & 80s, South India being far more benign than the North. My only criticism is that you wisely avoided drinking the water, but seemed okay about train meals & food vendors on trains. I never touched a bite of this food as the handling & preparation could be very uncertain & vary largely hygine Wise I carried a bag with bread & canned cheese,I could ger freshly cooked omelette from certain stations.i used to carry powderd milk & make my own tea,

I had everything stolen on first Indian train trip. An Indian guy came and sat in the seat next to me and was wanting to give advice about where I should put my bags and said I had to put them above my head on the shelf. I started reading a book and looked round and my bag was gone along with the guy. It was my first experience traveling so was very naive, you live and learn etc being down and out with no money or passport in Mumbai for 3 days was interesting got 2 Bollywood acting jobs because I needed the money., had to sleep ruff on the sea front, Fun times looking back on it.😂
Hospet junction has changed quite in bit in the 20 + years since I went there. They have great Mysore Masala Dosai there. Good South Indian food in Hospet!

14:26 i find train numbers too small to read. It's very problematic. One i had boarded 16629 insted of 16604, both are around same time, both start & end at same place, had to pay fine 😢
It is wild to me how the train doors are opened and you can just stand there and look out-side. that would never be allowed in America and many other countries for safety reasons.
These are the older models of the train which doesn't have automatic open and close mechanism but in the new versions which are being produced, they have doors that open and close automatically. There are only a few new models that are running currently.

hi! i'm going backpacking in india for the first time soon. i hear different things about travelling by train during december/january because it's high season now. is it really almost impossible to buy tickets for a train route a few days before? i have roughly a route but ofc also travelling spontaneously, so it's not possible for me to buy train tickets long long time in advance. is it naive to try buy tickets at the station a few days in advance (like 2 to 3 days..)? i've read different things from "no problem spontaneously" to "buy tickets months in advance" so i'm a bit confused.. maybe someone can tell me from his experiences around those months? otherwise i'll figure it out anyway :-)

Don't book months prior. Buy tatkal tickets one day prior. Theres other option of premium tatkal aswell. If you don't get in tatkal take in premium tatkal. You should do it at exact 10am. There will be bit of competition for it. Check various coaches like 3rd ac 2nd Ac and 1st AC.
Its a few years since I travelled on Indian Railways but I never bought months in advance (usually the week before) though I did usually go sleeper class . The couple of times I did get stuck - I remember going to current reservations counter and managing to pick up a ticket on the day from up near the Nepalese border to Delhi - the other time I wanted to go from Rishikesh to Varanasi or Delhi and it was fully booked but if I looked at a station a couple of stops down the line there was availability - just went unreserved to that station, that was a fun experience!
Yes. Take foreigner quota. If not available there's special quota like Tatkal and premium tatkal which opens one day prior at 10am. Book right at 10am because they will get sold out soon.

How long, in advance, did you have to book this train ticket?
I book as far as I can. But foreigner quota tickets are usually available even a few days before the train. No one uses them it seems.
