This is one of the best cut flower videos I have ever seen. I am a Master Gardener and I have been toying with branching into a cut flower business for several years and I completely understand your dependence on your full-time job. I live in Canada, in the province of Alberta which is Zone 3A and the weather can be very challenging at times. Although I am retired now, I help my husband full time with his ranch, we have over 100 commercial Angus beef mama cows and they calf in April/May when many cut flowers need to be seeded. We have had very cold springs for the past 5 years and last year frost came on September 8th. I have subscribed to your channel and I will view many of your other videos on UA-cam. Cheers from Gloria!
Well Gloria, that really is a complement indeed, thank you for such a kind comment. I am sure the cattle keep you very busy, I grew up on a farm and one of my first jobs was as a shepherdess, I just love being outdoors. Gosh zone 3A I am guessing you would have an incredibly short growing season. Best of luck with your plans🌺
I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video Suzanne. Really helpful for anyone aspiring to become a flower farmer. Without this realistic information it's hard to properly consider or make business plans for flower farming. Greetings from Ireland 👋🏼
Thank you, It is really reassuring for me to know the video is being well received. I so love Ireland but have not been for years, my Grandfather was Irish so I just had to visit, ans if i ever get the time i will be back again🌺
Thank you Suzanne,You were very honest.I think you have been quite economical in your costs and hopefully your business will continue to grow and be more profitable. I really enjoy your realistic videos 🌷💐
I have always been very thrifty, in life generally, I am a bit of a hoarder, if i get offered anything for free, i can not seem to say no😊 thanks for the comment and happy growing 🌺
Thank you so much for sharing. It definitely was NOT boring. So interesting and provided both the ups and downs of having a cut flower business. You'll do well I'm sure as you'll only continue to grow if you don't stop. I wish you good health and blessings for your journey. Thank you ❤
Thank you Natalie for your lovely message and positive feedback. I am definitely determined to keep going and hope to make a little business, to be proud of. Happy growing🌺
This is an amazing video. Thank you much for sharing and for your honestly. I love growing flowers and people always tell that I should sell them. It’s easy to say, but people don’t realize the amount of work, time and energy that go into flower farming. You’re young so keep up the great work and keep producing honest, beautiful and inspiring videos. Thanks Suzanne. 😊
Thank you Karen praise indeed, I really was not sure about this one, but it seems I got it right so I am pleased about that. And your positive comment definitely makes me want to get out filming at the weekend. Happy growing🌺
Hi Suzanne thank you so much for this clip. It certainly was very interesting and not at all boring. It's so easy for people to portray a so called perfect lifestyle business/side hustle earning mega money! So to hear honest information is great. I really enjoy your style of flower growing and floristry on your patch and your achievements are truly admirable. Thank you once again for sharing. Best wishes for a happy and prosperous flower growing future. Cheers to the micro flower growers! x
Oh Gina, what a lovely message, thank you so much for such positive words of encouragement. I hope I can continue to work on my dream and take all the micro flower growers in our tube community a long with me. Happy growing🌺
Thanks Suzanne, such an honest look at flower growing for retail. I too grow on a similar scale to you and don't make any money! It's a good job we love what we do.
I’m sure this will be one of your most popular videos because everyone is hungry for actual details so thank you for baring your books!!! It is very helpful to not fall into Instagram-envy
Suzanne , it is absolutely one of the best videos i have watched and even though i am in flowers growing year 3 i was so familiar and related to your experience (was nodding head all along :) nice to have side hustle when you have full time job cause the enjoyment you get out of it is priceless
I am just building a new flower farm on an acre in the Northern suburbs of Adelaide in South Australia and am adding all of these expenses up now. I love watching realistic content on how the costs really look because I'm not sure they are really put into consideration by those who want to become flower farmers before they start. Thankfully, I had watched plenty of UA-cam clips beforehand and had realistic expectations. My best friends own and run a local produce market so I will have a regular place to sell from (at no cost to myself, luckily!). Thank you for giving us a glimpse into your business and the costs that you have incurred. Mine seem to be very similar so far.
I love following Pheadra Gardeness as she is in Australia. An acre must be very hard work, but great that you have already secured such a great opportunity for selling. Wishing you a fantastic growing season and thank you so much for your comment🌺
Really interesting Suzanne. Thank you or the insight. I do hopw your business thrives and flourishes and you realise your dream. Good luck, lovely lasy. Happy gardening 🙂
Very honest and realistic video....Unusually so....Most want you to believe everything is rosy and it is totally unrealistic....Thanks for highlighting it...😊
I think i wanted to make the video, that I would like others to make for me to watch 😊 I must admit, I really was not sure about posting it, as it seems so personal. Thank you for the positive feedback, and happy growing🌺
Calling my venture a hobby at present has freed me to look at my expenses differently…. I figure it’s cheaper than many other options… Good discussion of the realities of starting a business.
Thank you for your honest video, it really helps to see the whole picture. Would you mind telling us what training courses you chose to do, as I'm currently looking into doing some myself. Thanks
Yes absolutely, although if i were choosing courses again now, knowing what I know I probably would not choose these, as they were really geared up to retail florists, using wholesale flowers. 4 courses with the British Academy of floral art, two of them were just afternoon flower arranging classes, one of them was the beginners 3 week course level 1, and the most in depth was the florist business module. I have also completed the element of design with Aesme Studio, and this was far more suitable for home grown flowers, but concentrated on arrangements rather than bouquets. I do think it was useful to make bouquets with the florist course, but i would probably choose a course more growing focused if i were choosing again. I have always been so tempted by bouquet bootcamp with Amy, but have managed to restrain myself for the time being. Best of Luck
Thankyou v interesting . We grow on alittle more land than you and having been growing for 5yrs now . Hiw do you push people to your website . We are struggling to get hits . Live on outskirts of a city thankyou
This is not easy and takes a lot of very specific editing on your site, I actually started my site all over again, because my original site had become very messy and difficult to fix. Basically you need search engines to rank your site on page one of relevant search phrases, and the higher up that page you are the better. so for me i needed to rank highly with 'Flowers followed by my location' because that is what i think my potential customers will be typing into the search engine. The professional way to describe this is search engine optimization, and there are lots of web companies that offer it as a service. you absolutely can learn all the ways to do this, but its not easy and can take a lot of trial and error. I previously worked in tourism so have some previous experience with this, and still find it complicated. Customer reviews on google can be very helpful too, but sadly my customers do not really do this. I wish you the best of luck.
I really liked this video. It's easy to project succes on people just because they are on UA-cam. Your expenses all together maybe sounds a lot, but every time you mentioned what you bought and then how much it has cost you, I thought: wow, well done (because my expenses on some of the same stuff was a lot more). 2024 was my first year and I spend around 3000,- and earned 1200,- euro's. (But I don't need to buy any more expensive stuff for the coming year). Next year I'm growing on 500 m2, and I'm really looking forward to the new growing year. I do not have to make a lot of money, but at least not losing anymore of it! Greeting from the Netherlands!
Yes its always great to look forward, I am really hoping that my 2024 numbers will show profit, although I do not think my Christmas sales will be as good as 2023, because I have not got any markets booked in. 1200 euros in your first year is great, my first year sales were way lower. I am also looking forward to the next growing season, and am really hoping to exceed the sales in this video, wishing you a great growing season🌺
Thank you so much Suzanne ! As always, your honesty and realistic videos are so refreshing and valuable.
Thank you for the positive feedback greatly appreciated🌺
Another great video with lots of welcome detail and realism. Thank you!
Thank you Laura, having positive feedback is very encouraging. Happy growing🌺🌺

Couldn't agree more, so much enjoyment and so rewarding to grow such beautiful flowers, happy growing to you🌺
Thankyou for sharing, I am in my 4th year flower farming, you made me feel better about not yet making a profit!
lets hope we both get some sort of payment for all of our efforts real soon, best of luck with your venture🌺

That sounds like a good place to be, I think it almost always starts as a hobby that quickly gets out of control. Happy growing🌺
