I’m 30 years old next year. I think I’ll bust my ass in the US for the next 10-15 years so I can retire in Mexico. Also helps I’m a Mexican citizen. It shouldn’t be too hard. I think I’d rather retire at 45 in Mexico my home country than 60+ in the USA.
I'm right there with you, I'm 42 mexican american myself, visited mexico for the first time in 21 years. and let me tell you. i fell in LOVE. came back to los Angeles after vacationing there for a week and immediately decided to start saving to buy a home there and leave the u.s i cant wait to retire. hopefully next year.
I moved from the USA at 79 to Queretaro, Mexico on 11-2-2021, due to the deadly crimes and the expensive rents, utilities, food etc. I am on a pension, so I could not afford to stay n the USA, where I was born and raised. My pension goes farther here in Mexico. The city is safe, clean and beautiful.

We moved to Merida and it’s amazing. The people are kind and little to no crime. I left my keys in door and 3 hours later some man rang my doorbell and handed them to me❤️🇲🇽

Be careful promoting Tulum as a retirement or residential town. The town is essentially sitting on an underground river and caves, and has had an explosion of development without much infrastructure to keep up with the growth. Cenotes were once intact; are now getting polluted. I hate it when we ruin such a good thing.
It's bad what's happening in Tulum. It makes me think of the USA and how the people of England bowled over the land, decimated the Indians and the animals to extinction while proclaiming Manifest Destiny. As a child I learned in school that the indigenous people were 'savages' 'ignorant' and they were disgusting while 'we' were superior and needed to teach them. I used to think, Well, if strangers came to your land, lied to you, broke agreements and decimated the beavers, buffalos and forced you out wouldn't you BE SAVAGE to protect your life?

We picked Tepic Nayarit. San Blas and Matanchen bay are 30 minutes drive from Tepic. Cost of Living is extremely low. Tepic is a 2 hour drive from major city of Guadalajara.
We live on $1600/month....two people! In Puerto Vallarta, which is not cheap anymore for a really nice condo rental like we have...2+2 with a partial ocean view.
My mom bought a home in Mazatlan outside city for a small town feel but near the ocean still. She still needs 2 more years before she actually retires fully and moves there, currently just goes twice a year

Already doing just that. I live in Los Cabis, Sn Jose del Cabo to be exact 6 to 8 months a year and love it. My Spanish is iffy and love the culture and the people. Mexican food is beyond good and the people here are very helpful. Scenery is magnificent. Best thing I ever did was buy a beach front condo over 20 years ago,fir retirement. Many American & Canadians here. Mexico is awesome.
Ajijic is by far, the best place to retire and to live in Mexico! Amazing weather… actually the second best weather in the world. And great quality living! Love being here! And im not retire hehehe

I did some number crunching for Mazatlan for me and my dog: the est. daily cost will be about $79 of which Food is the greatest exp - $22, Rent is the next - $18, then Auto - $12 with the rest at $27 (Entertainment, Misc, Communications, Travel trailer (I have a payment but won't be taking it with me). These figures are based upon the past 18 mos in the U.S. with adjustments for Mazatlan. I'm a bean counter so I hope it's fairly correct. Yes, my food expense might be high and my lodging should be a little higher - but time will tell. I think my motto will tell it all: "Wine, Women and Warm climate).
the cities you mentioned in the video are heavily lived by the xpat community... Thus making it too expensive already. I'm glad Mexico is such a huge country... We. Have other alternatives that are not highly lived with the expat community...

Mazatlan is just amazing, and with everything they are building there it’s becoming more and more attractive not only for tourists but also for retirees… the fact is that mazatlan has one of the largest Canadian communities in Mexico when you take into account the size of the city.. there are between 14,000 to 16,000 Canadians permanently living in mazatlan.
We live in Mazatlan for 6 months only because it was the shortest flight from Tijuana airport and we loved it. People there treated us well and loved our kids. Had a few home-cooked meals and felt at home in the city. We will be back

Lived in Mexico and certainly no expert but from what I have heard Cancun is tourist trap. Oaxaca is excellent if you dont need the sea (about 4 hour drive through the mountains) and if you want to be close to the ocean Puerto Escondido and Mazunte region was great. Puerto Vallarta is beautiful too albeit more expensive than the ones I mentionned.

There are numerous places that offer a fantastic retirement in Mexico. Our top choices would include San Miguel De Allende, Playa Del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta, Tulum and Mazatlán.
My first vacation outside Canada was Acapulco in '85. Then, again in '86. Finally in Puetro Vallarta in '93. Since then, hearing horror stories about violence everywhere, and governments around the world saying Mexico is a hot spot, I decided that I will take my vacations elsewhere. Maybe I'm a bit ignorant about Mexico's status, but, I found other treasures throughout the Americas. I hope that someday, I can return when the government has a handle on its violence. Peace to all.

Love Mexico and have traveled throughout, however there is the corruption and cartel. I was dining at a very popular beautiful steakhouse in a very upscale area of Guadalajara. In walks 4 really bad dudes openly carrying machine guns they sat next to our table and they had back ups with more guns at every entrance into the restaurant. It was a very unnerving situation, as we rushed to get our check and get out of there. They had lots of tear drop tattoos. Mexico has this issue that cannot be ignored.
Sorry but this is a very rare occurance you were in. Most will nit be in it. My advice is when going to the higher end places, ask a local first. This happen to ne in Morelia. I saw a shiny cantina/steakhouse and was dying to go. The sec we arrived the Uber driver said there is a lot of cartel activity and actually had a shootout the year prior.
You are lying, in Mexico cartels dont do the tear drop tatto, thats an American thing. Also, you are probably confunsed and are thinking of the guys that collect the money for a business and transports it to the banks, they are a private security company that usually drives around with a security van and two or more guards with rifles, they usually wear green or pink vests.

I have heard good things about Huatulco and Zihuatenejo, but havecnot been to either. San Miguel,and PV are my favorites, but have not checked out the Lake Chapala region - though it is close to the huge city of Guadalajara, which might be a negative. The climate and culture in San Miguel are wonderful, but the airport connection in Leon is 90 min away.
@@teresahurtig9413 Take a shuttle (90 minutes). You can also fly into MX City, but is is over 3 hours from there, but airfares may be better, depending on where you are coming from. The city is wonderful, climate ideal, lots of culture, and a nice assortment of expats from around the world. Only drawback is the lack of an ocean or big lake, but a great place to retire, and a great Spanish language school to Hine up on your Spanish, if necessary.
Beach areas are much more susceptible to flooding in Hurricanes, plus many Gringos move in and have their AC running 24/7. How about just keeping the room where you sleep to an AC environment and don't be an idiot constantly fighting the natural Hot Humid weather. ¿Why retire there if that's your plan?

I m surprised you did not put Puebla near the top. Additionally, Guadalajara is great for those who prefer a big city.

Can you give us a break down on what makes up the "cost of living"?
Depends so many factors: Location, what part of the city, luxury of home/condo, and etc.
I also wonder if that’s per month.

Lived in Mexico and certainly no expert but from what I have heard Cancun is tourist trap. Oaxaca is excellent if you dont need the sea (about 4 hour drive through the mountains) and if you want to be close to the ocean Puerto Escondido and Mazunte region was great. Puerto Vallarta is beautiful too albeit more expensive than the ones I mentionned.

My first vacation outside Canada was Acapulco in '85. Then, again in '86. Finally in Puetro Vallarta in '93. Since then, hearing horror stories about violence everywhere, and governments around the world saying Mexico is a hot spot, I decided that I will take my vacations elsewhere. Maybe I'm a bit ignorant about Mexico's status, but, I found other treasures throughout the Americas. I hope that someday, I can return when the government has a handle on its violence. Peace to all.

Love Mexico and have traveled throughout, however there is the corruption and cartel. I was dining at a very popular beautiful steakhouse in a very upscale area of Guadalajara. In walks 4 really bad dudes openly carrying machine guns they sat next to our table and they had back ups with more guns at every entrance into the restaurant. It was a very unnerving situation, as we rushed to get our check and get out of there. They had lots of tear drop tattoos. Mexico has this issue that cannot be ignored.
Sorry but this is a very rare occurance you were in. Most will nit be in it. My advice is when going to the higher end places, ask a local first. This happen to ne in Morelia. I saw a shiny cantina/steakhouse and was dying to go. The sec we arrived the Uber driver said there is a lot of cartel activity and actually had a shootout the year prior.
You are lying, in Mexico cartels dont do the tear drop tatto, thats an American thing. Also, you are probably confunsed and are thinking of the guys that collect the money for a business and transports it to the banks, they are a private security company that usually drives around with a security van and two or more guards with rifles, they usually wear green or pink vests.

I know Playa de Carmen and Merida, well spent time in both. Merida is great and feels safe...dont try to drive in Mexico..defensive driving unknown there 😉 Playa del Carmen i liked too...more than Cancun

That's not true. We live in Morelia and rarely even hear about crime. Crime in Chicago and St. Louis is worse.

I guess this is where being a Mexican American and having relatives in México is advantageous, they let me know when someone wants to sell their land, and if I have the cash I buy it. It just seems like their is an uptrend of people buying up land in México.

I have heard good things about Huatulco and Zihuatenejo, but havecnot been to either. San Miguel,and PV are my favorites, but have not checked out the Lake Chapala region - though it is close to the huge city of Guadalajara, which might be a negative. The climate and culture in San Miguel are wonderful, but the airport connection in Leon is 90 min away.

@@teresahurtig9413 Take a shuttle (90 minutes). You can also fly into MX City, but is is over 3 hours from there, but airfares may be better, depending on where you are coming from. The city is wonderful, climate ideal, lots of culture, and a nice assortment of expats from around the world. Only drawback is the lack of an ocean or big lake, but a great place to retire, and a great Spanish language school to Hine up on your Spanish, if necessary.
