Enjoyed this series with Scott Vance. Growing up in Texas, opportunities to socialize with other Mormons was a highlight of my youth. This required driving long distances, but we didn’t mind-it was worth the drive. Churches are where people go for community. Ending the fun social activities and opening exercises, results in less community, and may be a part of members, especially youth, dropping out-less enjoyable investment. People have less opportunity to use their talents in gospel enrichment.

I agree with your guest. I’ve never been LDS but I recall the 1970’s and 1980’s where the Mormon youth involvement included things like Road Shows, dances, and basketball leagues. It was fun. As a Catholic in Utah we had so many youth activities it was crazy but more importantly, again it was FUN! If you remove the FUN, the youth will drift away.

Shouldn't it be "FAIR at temple square" or "FAIR of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints"? I prefer the former.

Is Scott's paper available anywhere - has he posted it online, published it somewhere, ???

It is not yet published. The intent is to publish in the Journal of the Mormon Social Science Association, hopefully within 6 months. Ryan Craygun is the co-author. I will probably also make available the raw data (financial) based on my analyasis of the public 990 forms on my website (mormonscholar).

@@scottvance74 so your pet project of Mormonism, just like so many other anti Mormons. You left the church almost 20 years ago, yet still are so involved you cannot do basic research. Much of what your research consisted of was the BS on anti Mormon/Exmo Reddit and Johnny Dehlin who makes a crap ton of money being the most well known modern anti Mormon. I am sure you hope to aspire to be like him some day. What must be be to spend your free time being an anti Mormon conspire theorist… sad sad sad. Your mr rogers esque profile picture is nice through… Gives off that innocent just seeking the truth vibe, but it is easy to see through it when you check a few of your “facts”

I know you are new here, so let me set some ground rules. Please don't throw around insults. It is not welcome here. I'm sure you came from another podcast.
I talk to both believing and unbelieving scholars and the term "anti-Mormon" gets thrown around way too casually. If you listen to the whole interview, Scott makes several recommendations to improve church culture. That's not something an anti-Mormon does.
I have a very strict policy against ad hominem attacks here, and if you don't want to comply, your comments get deleted quickly and I ban people who don't want to be polite to me or my guests.
There are plenty of other places on the internet where insults are welcome, but this is not it. I expect polite, adult conversations, not jr high insults. You are welcome to disagree with anything in a polite manner. But I have little tolerance for insults, even if unintended.

Which is odd since he left the church almost 20 years go…. Most people who leave an organization are not everywhere taking about it positively. He does come across very nice, but clearly to slip in doubt, confusion and at times false information.

You two are a bit loose with your facts. I've enjoyed many of the interviews on this channel in the past, but when I hear some information that I happen to know is not true and is accepted so readily by both of you, it causes me to question the veracity of the other content on this channel that I don't know about. It just seems that bias is blinding you both to the actual facts.

    • @GospelTangents

I would like to know "some information that I happen to know is not true."
Because I know that a lot of stuff attributed to me was not said by me.
Honestly, I'm not looking for a fight. I'd be happy to correct anything that was wrong, and if I can have a civil conversation from someone who wants to correct the record, I'm happy to do so (even on camera.) I am into accuracy, but I'm not into flame wars.

@@weirdlanguageguy Greg has been watching Ward Radio where in a special episode "Debunking Rick 'Boring' Bennett and the Online Sadduccee Scott Vance" they claim that I compare them to the Wagner group, that I inaccurately describe them as being far right, and that I look like I have eaten too much kale, am afraid to go on live video, look like Mr. Rogers, and sound like Donald Trump. Cardon summarized as follows: "He’s lied about me, my finances, my politics, done zero research, and put himself up as an academic authority on where I get my money. No! He’s [scott vance is] a liar.
