  • Together with my friend Tom we planned for his first flying trip in a GA aircraft. Although it was a nice sunny day, there was light-to-moderate turbulence that day with 11KT crosswind and thermals. Tom is not afraid of flying in general, however the bumbs we experienced did spook him enough for us to return to the airfield as a precaution. Only a safe flight is a fun flight and visa versa! You can not enjoy the flight if you do not feel comfortable or do not trust what is happening.
My take-aways: During briefing we paid extra attention to speak up on the first sign you may feel sick or may experience any kind of problem, not to hide it for any reason and that it is always OK to do so. Tom said that this really helped him feel safe to speak out during flight. Also, he said that the steps I took in-flight made him feel a bit more comfortable, like speaking calm, giving a sense of structure, situational awareness and limiting impulses helped him to feel a bit more comfortable.
We agreed that sharing this video on UA-cam can be really valuable for other pilots and myself, to see what can happen, what to do or where to improve as a PIC if your passenger gets scared during flight.
