My mother-in-law was a young bride when the great depression hit, but like you, gardening was her passion. She grew enough food to feed her family and anyone who was in need of a meal. She saved seeds and fed people up until she died at 95 years. Evey year when she planted her
Garden, she designated the first 5 plants as her seed plant. The fruit was left on the vine until the seeds were ready to harvest. This was the purest strain of seeds that dated back to. The depression anthe finest vegetable I have ever eaten.

I want you to know that a few years ago, I was paralyzed in fear. My husband started prepping for a survival situation. I was very unaware of how corrupt our systems were and when the veil of ignorance was lifted I was paralyzed. When I found your channel a few years ago, I was grasping at straws trying to figure out how to survive a catastrophe. Your words of comfort, compassion, and wisdom touched my heart in such a way that brought me peace. And I have been watching ever since. I tend to get lost in the what ifs and the what could be, but your words -
What can I do right now? What is the next step in front of me? - that brought me back to a level- headed baseline. You’ve said those words before and it’s something I say to myself often to calm my heart. This year, my focus is saving seeds as well. Thank you, Jess, for always bringing truth but also comfort in times of stress. All we can do is do what we can to thrive. Thank you for your honesty, authenticity, and showing us what we can do RIGHT NOW, and being a word of comfort and wisdom in a time of such uncertainty. ❤

Sometimes we just need a reminder...My mother turned me onto organic gardening when I was a young child in the 1960s--fast forward to 1990 and she started a compost pile in MY backyard that is still in use/productive today! At the same time, she also used the back half of my yard as 'her' vegetable garden plot to share food and growing knowledge/inspiration with me (and SO many others)--our yards actually connect...She is now 92 years young, and I asked her a few years ago what she wanted her legacy to be. Her answer: my heirloom bean seeds! She finally passed the baton to me 3 years ago, so I now can carry on her legacy. Thank you Jess--I have been nervous about taking on such a responsibility, but in a split second, your words have resonated and I am up to the challenge! Happy Seed Saving everyone!

My 2020 motto still serves me - blessed, not stressed; prepared, not scared. Being reactive is easy. Being thoughtful and educating ourselves and taking whatever next right step - that's the key to sanity and calm. I do have concern about cross-pollination with things I don't want so I'm going to be more mindful of saving seeds and using bags this year. Thank you, as always, for being authentic!

    I get it Jess. I do ❤
I feel the same way. It’s just wisdom. Saving seeds bc the world seems crazy is wisdom. Doesn’t mean I’m scared and frantic and running around screaming the sky is falling. Just means we’re observing and thinking “huh, that might not be good, I’m going to start saving seeds just in case”. And we continue to go about enjoying life and being full of joy.
But at the same time, it would be foolish not to save seeds.
We’re just not being foolish. Doesn’t mean we’re panicking and doing things out of fear.

    • @mkc0005

I’ve been “prepared” for most of my adult life (I think I still have some TP from Y2K 😁). My brother is 4 years older than me and has started to panic about not being ready enough. I told him no one is completely prepared. If the SHTF tomorrow it’s going to hurt but you can be prepared to the point it won’t hurt as much. Trust in God but have an extra can of beans on hand (and a way to grow more).

We live in an area of the country where the potential of severe winter weather (power outages and temporary isolation) are a given. We do not fear that... we PREPARE for that. This is no different. No different than canning and freezing food to hold us to the next garden season.... 150 years ago this was just what farm people did. We can do it too... farm or not.

I’m very cognizant of the fact that my tiny garden will likely not grow enough food to feed my family if anything big were to happen.
But I’m learning and doing something. Anything that makes me more survivable and that gives me peace.
In our last residence, we could not have a garden. Being able to even try in itself is the comfort.

    • @sassyherbgardener7154
      @sassyherbgardener7154 11 місяців тому +5

The first step is to realize that your tiny garden will likely not grow enough food to feed your family, if anything big were to happen. The second step is to remedy that situation (if you are worried about it), by buying foods in bulk, as much as your budget allows, and preserve it! We grow a couple of big gardens, and likely have most of what we could eat if catastrophe hits, but I STILL have been buying extra food from farmers' markets and sales, and preserving it for such an emergency. Don't get overwhelmed, slow and steady is better than whirlwind and frazzled, with nothing preserved, and feeling paralyzed. Get going, everybody! You don't need huge gardens to be prepared. Pressure can, water bath can, steam can, freeze, dehydrate, freeze dry, or BUY freeze dried cans of food. I see the freeze dried foods on clearance late at night on Amazon, and they last 25 years. Don't live in fear, just confidence.

I got a vacuum sealer for Christmas this year so I’m considering sealing some in a bag and freezing them. Another good way to easily save varieties if you have the space is to remember that peppers are perennials, so you can overwinter the same plant and be sure it will produce the same fruit. And you can propagate them from cuttings, along with many other plants! Seed saving will work better for super long term, of course, but options are always good.

I purchased a book, “Seed to Seed” earlier this year, not because I know anything about GMO seeds nor do I have your experience ( I am starting my 4th year) but because saving my own seeds is one step closer to self sustainability. I absolutely love gardening. I wish I would have discovered this passion earlier in my life (I am now just 61) the dreams of where I could be just blow my mind. But I accept your challenge and will save my seeds and put them in the bottom of my freezer and “if” anything happens my seeds will be moved someplace safe. Thank you for this video❤❤❤

I 1000% agree. In some of the garden Forums ive been seeing a lot of people talking about Crossing this and disturbing the seeds, My worry is this GMO wont be regulated like the others are, so it could get spread and out of control quickly. And with not knowing how this could affect other varieties. 5-10 years from now could be a lot worse.
I do have some hope, I'm seeing more and more countries starting to Ban the growing and sale of GMOS, so far 28, after research is starting to show, they aren't that good for us, and unfortunately some are showing health issues are starting to pop up.

Hey! I'm finally head of Jess on a gardening task! I created 2 seed banks and placed them for future use. I did it in 2020, after our Michigan governor banned stores from selling SEEDS. And yes, she did - I was in Walmart and witnessed employees wheeling a huge seed display into the garden center, then taping it off with caution tape. I took pics and asked what was going on. Workers told me they were doing it "under orders of the governor " BTW: i had 2 friends who had commercial greenhouses whose sales were ready, but the governor banned them taking phone or internet orders then be no contact placement in the buyers trunks. Yet the big box stores, pot shops, convenient stores were "essential "
So call me Miss Scarlet, but I'll never let a politician come between me and SEEDS again!

Also… it’s your channel. Anyone contradicting you in spite or pride is sitting behind the keyboard for a reason!

You’re a gem . Never apologize for the frightening topic of saving heirloom seeds. It is a frightening topic. These are frightening times. The most frightening element is just how many people have no idea of the impending doom at this moment. You’re doing a great thing. It’s critical that people wake up and act now. You’re brave and knowledgeable. Knowledge is power. Thank you for all you do !!

Doing it. Been doing it. It got so bad with the blue lakes seeds we were buying, i sought out the best plants one year and just saved the seeds. Dedicating a few plants to save every year. Last yr my helpful hubby picked some of the beans at prime , was so proud of himself when he announced he had given them to our neighbor to enjoy. Glad i already had some tucked away. 😅

Ngl- I got a little teary-eyed thinking about 1000 people choosing to protect the seeds ahead of potential threat. I've been saving seeds for years and have used those little mesh bags to prevent cross-pollination in my tomatoes since I saw your seed saving video years ago.
You have been such an incredible inspiration in my life - so much so that I quit my gov job to get a bachelor's degree in sustainable food and farming and start teaching others how to grow their own food.

I turned 75 last year so am not as spry as I used to be. I am redesigning my garden to all raised beds. I had gotten depressed thinking I had to give up gardening. It brings me such joy and satisfaction, I came up with my own solution. The good Lord provided a positive, hard working, delightful young man to help in my garden. God always provides! Your seed saving videos over the years have empowered me to save a lot of seeds. I eventually got a book on it too. I've listened to various podcasts such as ones from Joe Gardener podcast on the subject. Amazing power to save seeds! I Have 4-5 types of seeds dried, ready to be packaged from last year on my bookshelf. The mesh bags go a long way and are so easy to use. As I'm sowing seeds, I make note of what packs are low and need to be saved. I have 5 thing so far that I need to save!

I've been saving seeds for years. I appreciate your staying on top of the GMO issue entering the environment. Given the legal history with SEED Control in the Commercial Ag environment for profit & Control for sake, I believe that it is essential that we all do what we can to save as many varieties of seed as we can. More plant varieties have become EXTINCT than we currently still have due to many of the issues you have mentioned in this video. I appreciate your attempt at keeping a level head without panic, however, I echo a sense of urgency that many other seed savers have stated. Once the diversity is gone, it will be lost forever. Never to be regained.
Thank you, Jessica. I bless you once again for your willingness to share the hard truths. May God continue to bless you with abundance in all things.

Thank you Jess for addressing the GMO dilema. I so agree with your thoughts on those new GMO purple tomato seeds. My first reaction was to fall into the various rabbit holes for long term consequences. Even after reading and researching any articles on these seeds, I am totally unswayed as to their supposed benefits. I trust that we home gardeners and homesteaders are as informed and wise in our decisions to continue saving or purchasing tried and true seed varieties from those reputable companies we all trust, and swap among communities of like-minded gardeners.
Seeds are sacred. I have always believed this, and I treat my small gardens as a mini temple.

Good chat. There is comfort in doing something, anything, no matter how small, that helps to ensure ones future. And saving seeds is one of those things. Even if it is just one thing you save seeds on, you just never know how far that one seed can go, if needed. I understand why it would be difficult to chat about this topic but you did well Jess! It is so easy to go down the negative road but much harder to stay positive and do something to give one hope. Good job on this!

I'm in my 50s and planning to try to grow some veggies this year. We had a garden growing up and my mom canned things when I was young. But as soon as the family had enough of an income, she stopped and relied on the grocery store instead. It was something she never enjoyed and so didn't really pass any knowledge on to me or my siblings. So I'm grateful for your knowledge and your willingness to share what you have learned.
When the pandemic first started, I had just joined a CSA an got a bagful of vegetables each week that I had to figure out what to do with. I ate so many things I had never tried before and found some favorites from when I was a kid. I even started cooking more and more, I used to just heat up already prepared meals from the frozen section. And once I discovered roasting vegetables, I can't go back now!
Anyway, thank you for your videos. You have inspired me to try to grow my own things this year. I'm in a colder climate than you are but I'll give it my best go. Bless you!

I am saving seeds from my King of the North peppers this year as they grow phenomenal for me. Last year I saved my favorite cucumber and squash seeds. Year before I saved my favorite cherry tomato seeds. I only had a few seeds left and wnen I tried to buy more, I couldn't find them. That was a shocker for me. I guess I'll be saving more tomato seeds this year. Thanks Jess...for everything.
