    My mother-in-law was a young bride when the great depression hit, but like you, gardening was her passion. She grew enough food to feed her family and anyone who was in need of a meal. She saved seeds and fed people up until she died at 95 years. Evey year when she planted her
    Garden, she designated the first 5 plants as her seed plant. The fruit was left on the vine until the seeds were ready to harvest. This was the purest strain of seeds that dated back to. The depression anthe finest vegetable I have ever eaten.

    I want you to know that a few years ago, I was paralyzed in fear. My husband started prepping for a survival situation. I was very unaware of how corrupt our systems were and when the veil of ignorance was lifted I was paralyzed. When I found your channel a few years ago, I was grasping at straws trying to figure out how to survive a catastrophe. Your words of comfort, compassion, and wisdom touched my heart in such a way that brought me peace. And I have been watching ever since. I tend to get lost in the what ifs and the what could be, but your words -
    What can I do right now? What is the next step in front of me? - that brought me back to a level- headed baseline. You’ve said those words before and it’s something I say to myself often to calm my heart. This year, my focus is saving seeds as well. Thank you, Jess, for always bringing truth but also comfort in times of stress. All we can do is do what we can to thrive. Thank you for your honesty, authenticity, and showing us what we can do RIGHT NOW, and being a word of comfort and wisdom in a time of such uncertainty. ❤

    Sometimes we just need a reminder...My mother turned me onto organic gardening when I was a young child in the 1960s--fast forward to 1990 and she started a compost pile in MY backyard that is still in use/productive today! At the same time, she also used the back half of my yard as 'her' vegetable garden plot to share food and growing knowledge/inspiration with me (and SO many others)--our yards actually connect...She is now 92 years young, and I asked her a few years ago what she wanted her legacy to be. Her answer: my heirloom bean seeds! She finally passed the baton to me 3 years ago, so I now can carry on her legacy. Thank you Jess--I have been nervous about taking on such a responsibility, but in a split second, your words have resonated and I am up to the challenge! Happy Seed Saving everyone!

    I get it Jess. I do ❤
    I feel the same way. It’s just wisdom. Saving seeds bc the world seems crazy is wisdom. Doesn’t mean I’m scared and frantic and running around screaming the sky is falling. Just means we’re observing and thinking “huh, that might not be good, I’m going to start saving seeds just in case”. And we continue to go about enjoying life and being full of joy.
    But at the same time, it would be foolish not to save seeds.
    We’re just not being foolish. Doesn’t mean we’re panicking and doing things out of fear.

    • @mkc0005

      I’ve been “prepared” for most of my adult life (I think I still have some TP from Y2K 😁). My brother is 4 years older than me and has started to panic about not being ready enough. I told him no one is completely prepared. If the SHTF tomorrow it’s going to hurt but you can be prepared to the point it won’t hurt as much. Trust in God but have an extra can of beans on hand (and a way to grow more).

    • @twohomesteads6512
      @twohomesteads6512 4 місяці тому

    My 2020 motto still serves me - blessed, not stressed; prepared, not scared. Being reactive is easy. Being thoughtful and educating ourselves and taking whatever next right step - that's the key to sanity and calm. I do have concern about cross-pollination with things I don't want so I'm going to be more mindful of saving seeds and using bags this year. Thank you, as always, for being authentic!

    I’m very cognizant of the fact that my tiny garden will likely not grow enough food to feed my family if anything big were to happen.
    But I’m learning and doing something. Anything that makes me more survivable and that gives me peace.
    In our last residence, we could not have a garden. Being able to even try in itself is the comfort.

    • @sassyherbgardener7154
      @sassyherbgardener7154 5 місяців тому +5

      The first step is to realize that your tiny garden will likely not grow enough food to feed your family, if anything big were to happen. The second step is to remedy that situation (if you are worried about it), by buying foods in bulk, as much as your budget allows, and preserve it! We grow a couple of big gardens, and likely have most of what we could eat if catastrophe hits, but I STILL have been buying extra food from farmers' markets and sales, and preserving it for such an emergency. Don't get overwhelmed, slow and steady is better than whirlwind and frazzled, with nothing preserved, and feeling paralyzed. Get going, everybody! You don't need huge gardens to be prepared. Pressure can, water bath can, steam can, freeze, dehydrate, freeze dry, or BUY freeze dried cans of food. I see the freeze dried foods on clearance late at night on Amazon, and they last 25 years. Don't live in fear, just confidence.

    We live in an area of the country where the potential of severe winter weather (power outages and temporary isolation) are a given. We do not fear that... we PREPARE for that. This is no different. No different than canning and freezing food to hold us to the next garden season.... 150 years ago this was just what farm people did. We can do it too... farm or not.

I got a vacuum sealer for Christmas this year so I’m considering sealing some in a bag and freezing them. I love the idea of having a seed vault and opening it in 50-100 years to see if there are any that don’t exist anymore at that point, that I could then bring back. ❤

    Another good way to easily save varieties if you have the space is to remember that peppers are perennials, so you can overwinter the same plant and be sure it will produce the same fruit. And you can propagate them from cuttings, along with many other plants! Seed saving will work better for super long term, of course, but options are always good.

I purchased a book, “Seed to Seed” earlier this year, not because I know anything about GMO seeds nor do I have your experience ( I am starting my 4th year) but because saving my own seeds is one step closer to self sustainability. I absolutely love gardening. I wish I would have discovered this passion earlier in my life (I am now just 61) the dreams of where I could be just blow my mind. But I accept your challenge and will save my seeds and put them in the bottom of my freezer and “if” anything happens my seeds will be moved someplace safe. Thank you for this video❤❤❤

    Hey! I'm finally head of Jess on a gardening task! I created 2 seed banks and placed them for future use. I did it in 2020, after our Michigan governor banned stores from selling SEEDS. And yes, she did - I was in Walmart and witnessed employees wheeling a huge seed display into the garden center, then taping it off with caution tape. I took pics and asked what was going on. Workers told me they were doing it "under orders of the governor " BTW: i had 2 friends who had commercial greenhouses whose sales were ready, but the governor banned them taking phone or internet orders then be no contact placement in the buyers trunks. Yet the big box stores, pot shops, convenient stores were "essential "
    So call me Miss Scarlet, but I'll never let a politician come between me and SEEDS again!

    Just bought bags immediately after watching this video. Thanks for the solid reminder Jess! I too have gotten lax with the availability of seeds- but my dad has always said, “Better to not need it and have it, than to need it and not have it.”
    Also, 100% this is a threat to us and shouldn’t be taken lightly. We don’t know when they will pull the trigger on something bigger.
    Also… it’s your channel. Anyone contradicting you in spite or pride is sitting behind the keyboard for a reason!

    Faith over fear but be aware and educated! The sheer number of people I have read who are chomping at the bit to grow those GMO seeds is absolutely scary. Mostly because I feel to my soul those are the same people who don't care about cross pollination and what effect that has. My own concerns are, this is ONE GMO seed, more will follow. Thank you for speaking up and thank you for being passionate. I look forward to seeing your seed saving videos!

      Yeah, there can be a lot of excitement around the novelty of something, but sometimes we need to do some long-term thinking about impacts before getting swept up in the next new cool thing. I've saved seeds a bit before, but I'm going to be more intentional about it moving forward.

      I 1000% agree. In some of the garden Forums ive been seeing a lot of people talking about Crossing this and disturbing the seeds, My worry is this GMO wont be regulated like the others are, so it could get spread and out of control quickly. And with not knowing how this could affect other varieties. 5-10 years from now could be a lot worse.
      I do have some hope, I'm seeing more and more countries starting to Ban the growing and sale of GMOS, so far 28, after research is starting to show, they aren't that good for us, and unfortunately some are showing health issues are starting to pop up.

    Yes, Yes.... a thousand times Yes! I want to be the person my family turns to for food security IF something was to go horribly wrong, as they do now for their annual gardens. That means I have a responsibility to keep seed supplies and building my skills. When I found your channel I was in the first couple years of serious gardening. Before that I had piddled around in the garden with my dad for a couple tomatoes a year but mostly just as a place to be with him. After his passing I found joy there in remembrance of him. Now the kids in my family come piddle around with me. You and your skill building has helped to make me a confident, generous gardener. Thank you. And if something was to go haywire know that your teaching has fed my family as well.

    Very excited to learn how to save seeds. It is what our grandparents and great grandparents did after all. It is wise to secure varieties but also to save seed from varieties grown in your garden because many times those seeds adapt to your area. This means that varieties can actually improve for you over time. What I am very excited about is saving money because the cost of living does not appear to decreasing anytime soon.

    Solid plan! I just received a shipment of 250 brown lunch bags for seed storage. I've been seed saving from everything we eat because a friend had his gardening supplies roped off from purchase during the pandemic. I never want to be in a position where someone comes to me for seed and I have to send them away empty-handed. God gave us such reciprocity with our gardens it seems the best way to honor that gift is to give it to others. We have to take care of each other. ❤

    This is an example of a very current problem that is quickly gaining strength. The drive of some of these ideas are not looked at objectively. They don’t even want others to think ahead, only to see the shiny object today. Many will push this kind of stuff much too hard on people for not a lot of longterm benefit.

    I’m a self confessed seed hoarder who’s been very laid back about saving seeds, but hopefully this season will be fruitful so we can all save more; I Love the idea of the mesh bags!✨ I too am rather even-keeled, I’ve actually been called stoic, but I like to observe and be aware more than I like to debate… That said the GMO’s have got me worried, especially after a friend & I started researching how many seed companies are owned by the large conglomerates , and how these companies are also buying heirloom variety names, to prevent the saving of their seeds; it’s mostly affecting farmers right now, but with initiatives like “Register Your Home Garden”, it makes you wonder where things are going… I try not to get too caught up, but I’m glad some of the larger channels like your’s are talking about these things, it’s helpful to be more aware so we can prepare as we see fit. I’m striving to find a balance somewhere between being informed and being prepared without being afraid; still trying to put Faith over fear✨🙏

    Your seed saving videos over the years have empowered me to save a lot of seeds. I eventually got a book on it too. I've listened to various podcasts such as ones from Joe Gardener podcast on the subject. Amazing power to save seeds! I Have 4-5 types of seeds dried, ready to be packaged from last year on my bookshelf. The mesh bags go a long way and are so easy to use. Thank you Jess for addressing the GMO dilema. I so agree with your thoughts on those new GMO purple tomato seeds. My first reaction was to fall into the various rabbit holes for long term consequences. Even after reading and researching any articles on these seeds, I am totally unswayed as to their supposed benefits. I trust that we home gardeners and homesteaders are as informed and wise in our decisions to continue saving or purchasing tried and true seed varieties from those reputable companies we all trust, and swap among communities of like-minded gardeners.
    Seeds are sacred. I have always believed this, and I treat my small gardens as a mini temple.
