I can relate 100%. I recently had a hair cut and lost nearly 2”. Those ends needed to go. Regular trims will avoid the big cut and help me retain the length I work so hard for.

That's the best way to look at it. Now that I'm settled I am going to make it a point to see a professional cat least once a year for a trim and treatment.

LaToya, I feel your concern. Our hair is close in length ( before your trim). I am about a 4b-c. I am very hands on when it comes to my stylist, though. I only see her twice a year for a blown out trim. I prep my own hair prior to my visits, ( i.e., wash, deep condish, leave-in, & adding my own heat protectent). I also section and detangle my hair prior to my visit and bring my own combs from home. I make sure I'm approximately 60-70% dry so that she will not have to use too many passes with the blow dryer. It also gives the product time to penetrate my hair. I request that she uses a round brush to ensure my ends are as straight as possible before my trim. Even though it's recommended, I do not flat iron for a more quality trim (the round brush is close enough; I try to avoid the flat iron). She shows me what needs to be trimmed before doing so. I normally agree. We have grown a rapport over the years. Too many times I have gone to stylists in the past that mistaken my reverted texture at the ends as needing to be chopped off. Not again. I love the round brush for this purpose. Some ask what is the point to prepping my hair and doing so much work prior to my visit. I take pride in my hair and spend valuable time to care, maintain, and grow it. It's hard to find someone that proceed with caution and patience when handling my hair; so I do the part that is most challenging. Health over length is true. But don't set my progress back over a mistake. Yes, it's only hair and it will grow back from cutting too much or ripping it out, but it is my time and effort being wasted from continuous setbacks. Keep being hands on with your hair. You are doing a great job. Don't feel bad for supervising others while working in your head until you find and train a stylist to your liking. Don't get me wrong, there are stylists out there that care and trim natural hair very well with you not having to be so hands on. They are just so hard to find. Until you find them, keep being hands on with others that do your hair. (It was that comb for me...smh).

Wow....loving everything you just said!!!!! Very good point, especially the point about it just being hair. We take so much time and pride in it for someone to just mindlessly cut it away without our permission. It's not just hair. It's a reflection of our hard work and dedication. Now I understand how that can be upsetting for those who wants the length.

Thanks for the comment about hair reverting on itself does not necessarily means it is damaged or needs to be cut. The last couple of trims I've had, I left with my hair being so much shorter than I felt it needed to be. Mind you these trims were three months apart and they were trimming off at least an inch each time. I think it has a lot to do with how they were blowing out my hair. When I blow out my hair its always much straighter than when they do it for a trim. Allllll this to say, you comment helped me know that I am not crazy.

LaToya, I hear you, can definitely relate to the inches that you've lost. I am not a natural that uses heat on my hair as well, so the last salon trim I had involved a wash and roller set which was perfect because it blew out my hair enough to have it stretched and sleek enough to have a proper trim. No flat iron needed! It's hard with type 4 hair trimming in blown out state, you're right it's harder to see the ends etc. Although I lost a few inches I must say that the health of my hair is better, it detangles better and is noticeably thriving.

Or would you do a curly cut instead? 3) How often do you like to have your hair professionally cut?

It does look like it was an inch and a half and man, your hair was reverting fast. Definitely sucking up that moisture from the air. Blow drying from the start with the comb attachment would have given you a firmer result. A flat iron might not have been needed. You have beautiful hair btw. Been watching you for over a year now.

11:48 You are absolutely not being extra regarding your comment that combs are not meant for our hair! Especially combs with narrow teeth! My hair texture is 4C and fine. The last comb I used was a wide tooth double row comb by Ouidad when my hair was wet. Unfortunately, its no longer manufactured. I haven’t used a comb on hair when it’s dry at all in the last 15+ years. I only use a tangle teezer when my hair wet hair. Applying conditioner to my dry hair and spritzing with water is how I detangle before washing/cowashing my hair. Protect those ends!❤

I think when you have small curls you have to wet your hair to get the benefit of a comb. Any curl smaller than the circumference of a pencil eraser should be wet (very moisturized) before a comb is used on it.

It looks good and it's way better to take off split ends than keeping them and allow the splits to travel up the strand to the point where your hair is thin. As long as you continue to take good care of your hair it will continue to grow. I trim my own hair also, but I'm not afraid to take off an inch or more instead of a half-inch if it's needed. I only go to a stylist when my hair is waist length for it to be evened up.

I think your hair looked great pre and post trim. To answer your question about whether it looks like the stylist cut it too short, it depends on perspective. Before the trim, your hair looked super long from the front and sides, but I also noticed the see through ends when you showed the back of your hair. You just can't beat a professional trim. This is coming from someone who butchered their own hair during quarantine and has had to trim as much as 8 inches at one time, LOL!

Not this coming out the day I got my trim. To me I don’t see the drastic-ness of your trim, it seems fuller which is in line with what I noticed in some recent appearances. But I know it feels more drastic when it’s your hair in person lol. Personally, I’m not too worried about trims because I don’t care for length even as I’m attempting to grow it out. I did ask questions about what she was doing when I saw stuff that made me 👀 but let her do her thing lol. The hair will grow back is my motto. Also more and more I’m agreeing about the combs and I exclusively brush (or comb) wet hair as well. I feel like things get dicey otherwise.

I wear my hair in an afro, so I don't care too much about length because it's never seen. So when I need a trim, I tell her cut what needed. I just rather it gone then have to deal with tangles at the ends. When my ends are in good shape, detangling takes like 5min.
And don't beat yourself up about being upset. hair cuts are always so upsetting. You are not being too much at all ❤. Is it possible for you to go more frequently than once a year? I go to the salon ever 2 - 3 month (because I need a break 🤣)so if my hair does need a trim it never that's much but a dusting.

Again for the people in the back….SO what if it’s see through, its growing in stages, that is what hair does. Most Black people’s hair does not grow evenly, why is that such a hard concept for stylist to UNDERSTAND??????? 🤷🏾‍♀️ If you don’t have split ends, cutting hair evenly is just for aesthetics. I agree, we will never reach a length goal constantly trimming our hair. As long as my ends are not split and knotted, I leave it be. I don't use heat (I stopped 1 yr ago) and keep my ends tucked and moisturized so I don't feel the need to trim just because it's not even or slightly see through. I dust minimally when absolutely neccessary. When I decide to use heat 1 yr from now, I'll worry about "even" hair at that time but until then, I'm just going to continue to pamper it with low manipulation styles (NO BRAIDS) and let it grow the way it wants to 😊.
