You Don't Have REAL 4C HAIR Sis! 🧐 | What 4c Hair Really Looks Like

- What hair type 4c looks like dry, wet, stretched, with shrinkage, moisturized, and manipulated into hairstyles. This video shows 4c strands up close and compared against type 4b and 4a strands according to the Andre Walker Hair Typing System.
There are so many misconceptions about 4c hair in the natural hair community. It seems 4c hair is only identified as being real if it is in its dry state with no true curl or coil definition. The truth is, 4c hair does have a curl/coil pattern! It’s just a smaller diameter to 4a. I believe because 4c is last on the Hair Typing chart that people mistake it for 4b characteristics. 4b hair is described as having no curl/coil.
Also, hair porosity, density, environment, genetics and so many other factors play into what a person sees and experiments. Just some food for thought. I hope this videos sheds light on how diverse hair can be - even with the same hair type.

I’ve come to the conclusion that for most folks “4c” hair means dehydrated hair. Lol once people hydrate their hair and learn to capture the coils, curls, or waves they begin to question if the hair is really “4c”.
This just happened to me!! I've always called my hair 4xyz because it really always used to break combs when it was dry and just difficult. I never grew it and always relaxed right away. Well, I did twists and overloaded my hair with oils, butters, and moisture. When I had to wash, my hair was so soft and I saw definition. Shocked and confused me. Had me questioning my 4c status. Phew!!
I agree with you completely.
Amen Sis! Proper hydration, moisture, the right products and so on makes all the difference.
this is literally my exact problem! right now i’m convinced im 4b bc my hair is no longer damaged and its always moisturized so you can SEE the curls, but ppl keep saying that 4c looks almost cottony and has no curl pattern, i’m like...but 4c...IS a curl pattern???
No. We mean hair like Lupita N'yongo.

I’m starting to Despise this hair typing system all together! A man created this chart that didn’t even acknowledge the coarsest hair type and he also recommended that Kinky hair should be relaxed. This Should Not be the basis for which we categorize our hair! I FINALLY understand why most professional stylist do not acknowledge or use this hair typing system! They simply assess their clients hair and proceed accordingly. My hair NEVER fit in any of the categories because it was never meant to..
There is no standing ovation button. We particpate in our own oppression.
I don't go so far as to despise a chart since it didn't do anything to me..
Be happy with your nappy hair
Gia Canada why did you feel the need to comment this?
It’s because it’s not a typing system for hair care. It’s just a reference for different types of curl patterns. The LOIS system is most accurate for hair care.

4C hair is filled with tiny spring like coils . The light doesn’t hit it the same , thats why ppl like to think it’s dry when many times it’s soft and moisturized
That's so true i have 42 i washed it today and was thinking my hair is in aclass by itself

Omg yesss I have a lot of 4c in my head and I be be like ow my hair is dry af the boom soft and sweet
Yesss
It also soaks up moisture. I don't know how much grease and hair lotion or daily hair conditioner my mom put in my hair. By the time school was over it look like she didn't put anything in it.
No shade but the people that comment saying you don’t have 4c hair because they have 4c and that’s not what it looks like...
need to moisturize their hair 🤦🏽♀️
Rude.
M M not everyone has the same type of 4c hair 😑
Well like she said 4c hair is versatile. There r ppl with 4c hair that when moisturized does not “clump” or define. However is still moisturized
There’s a lot of misinformation out there so when ppl tell girls with 4c hair to just moisturize their hair it furthers the idea that our picture of 4c hair is just dry when in reality a lot of 4c hair girls just don’t have clump. I have to use an EXTREMELY heavy gel to get clump and it makes my hair break so I just wear it in a cottony Afro, u gonna tell me my hair just dry...
this was so ignorant, like you didnt watch the video at all. people are saying this due to porosity differences, they're probably moisturizing their hair correctly. dont be that person adding to the stereotype that 4c hair is dry :l
ty for saying all 4c hair looks different. THANK YOU. it literally doesn’t matter how much i moisturize my 4c hair my hair can be softtt and filled with moisture and the curls just arent defined. comments that say “oh y’all 4c’s just don’t moisturize” is highkey extremely disrespectful and just further engrains this stereotype that those of us that have 4c hair is dry nappy and unattractive hair.
lol i really thought my hair was damaged or something it doesn't get a defined look at all
All 4c hair looks the same
people are so rude and ignorant, I think 4c hair is so beautiful and versatile
@@myescape607 she said not all 4c is the same so in a sense she did say it's all different. 7:50 there you go.
@@myescape607 I mean if you check through her comments and listen to what she says you'll notice that she's infact against people saying 4c hair looks unhealthy unless it's defined and has proper shape. (she doesn't heart people that say stuff about 4c hair looking filthy/not properly washed/that they need to use moisturizer if it doesn't look like hers)
She's just providing tips on how to handle their 4c hair while also mentioning to keep in mind that every person is different and not everything applies to everyone which is a fair statement.
I am not an expert on hair and I personally don't have experience with 4c hair so I can't say "I know for a fact that everything she says are facts" but from a viewer perspective I got positive vibes from her, she seemed really friendly and caring and I do believe she had the best intentions with this video.
The only sort of misleading part is the title for me because at first I thought she was going to be completely negative in the video.
Your hair is obviously 4c. 4c hair has a coil pattern, it's just difficult to see from a distance because of how small the coils are. The coil pattern also gets more obvious when it's clumped with gel, finger detangling or even styling cream. I've also noticed that 4c hair can be trained; the more you wear wash and go styles (or basically styles that let your hair be in its natural coil pattern), the more obvious your coils become. I think we are so used to seeing 4c hair stretched that we have no idea what it really looks like when it is happy and shrunken.
THIS. You explained it so well. I agree 100% ❤️
Never truer words.....I grew my hair and they swore I had 4A hair but I have 4c. It was long and soft due to proper care. White people know we have curly hair but our community does not understand it. Shame...
patriciaae99 girl BYE. I used to have a whole group of white friends and they have ZERO understanding of black hair and were perplexed by how curly my 4A/B hair is in a wet wash & go bcus they thought only mixed ppl had curls. And I still have coworkers who think this way. Stop giving yt ppl credit where they don’t deserve it.

I don’t have 4c hair but I’m getting tired of ppl saying 4c hair is dry and if it is manageable it’s not 4c hair, that is a crazy concept to me all types are beautiful and manageable with the right products and most importantly moisture
Yah the dryness really comes from the tight coiling, scalp oil has a harder time getting to the ends.
@@slickchick5811 That's because it's low porosity needs daily moisturizing and an oil to lock it in. If not the water just evaporates leaving the hair dry. Just speaking from experience.
We need to get rid of typing our hair....none of the curl patterns look like mine in the 3 or 4 category....Thank You for sharing how you identify your hair and see it as 4C. 7+ Billion people on Earth, no way all of our hair can fit into these small categories.

This video is growing and I’m getting a lot of comments that, in hindsight, I don’t think are kind. This video is about education backed with love and pride for our unique characteristics. I meant what I said at 2:02. This hair chart isn’t everything. If a person truly has a 4c pattern but it reacts differently there are a plethora of reasons why (stated in the video). Now.
The hair typing system isn’t the end all be all. I love the fact that Mr. Walker took the time to “start” a hair typing system, but I don’t think we should be so hung up on it. 🤷🏾♀️ I made this video a “tool” to help people find the right information for their hair.
Also, I’m choosing to refrain from using the term “4c Nazi” to describe people who strongly have opposing opinions
. I get the sentiment, but I think it can do more harm than good.
Honestly, I feel 4b women don’t get enough love. If a person’s hair doesn’t coil up or clump and they take good care of it, it’s very possible they have 4b. (Please hear me out)
4b has been classified (even by myself in the past) as being a pattern type that clumps coils/curls and has less shrinkage. I don’t believe that anymore.
I believe most get caught up in the natural progression of the chart (understandably) and forget that 4c wasn’t apart of the original chart and was tacked on at the end. When in reality it should have been placed before 4b and the strand types relabeled so that it matched the natural progression of the chart.
I no longer believe that clumping of the coils determines the difference between 4b and 4c, other factors do. A zig zagged pattern probably won’t clump in coils.
The LOIS Hair Typing System is more inclusive in my opinion. It leaves room for the fact that diameter of a curl or coil could (and probably does) vary past hair type 4a.
LOIS HAIR TYPING: ua-cam.com/video/xwMFG4lT4jY/v-deo.html
I also recognize that I did not personally ask Andre what he meant when he labeled 4b, this is my honest interpretation of what I see.
So all in all, I’m saying, I have compassion for those who have been miseducated or may not understand. I don’t want to call them Nazis because of the history of that word. I also don’t want to automatically state that if your hair doesn’t coil or clump it’s not well taken care of. We are unique and beautiful. Please watch the whole video before commenting.
I enjoyed ur video!! Thank you, and just ignore the 'naysayers', u did a great job explaining a LOT of misconceptions with our hair! At the end of the day, no one knows this but US. Looking forward to more videos from you!. Take care. Have a blessed day.
Well said.
Could you please pin your own comment? It's just easier to see. Thank you. You're also right hair is versatile
I agree “4b” doesn’t get a lot of love. Ppl seem to forget that tight wavy is a hair type/curl pattern. This type needs a product that will clump the waves an example is @whatthekinky or @chocolatebeautycurls
I totally agree! I was confused until about a year ago when I said ‘eff it’ because I have never had curls that clump. I have predominantly 4b zigzag micro waves. My hair is similar to a combination of Joy-el and VivHairTherapy’s. My hair only ‘clumps’ (and that is with ample effort) after it is longer than jaw-length unstretched, and it only ‘clumps’ at the ends, with about a tub of hair jelly in it. 😂
The roots of my hair grow zigzag and refuse to ever clump. I’m low porosity, so my hair literally never dries if I try a wash n go with a tub of product, so now I just rock my afro.
I used to always be confused as to why 4c hair had a curl pattern, yet 4b hair was a ziggle. That’s why I like The Green Beuty’s complete hair typing chart. Check her out if you haven’t heard of her. She takes hair texture, hair thickness, hair density, hair porosity, AND sebum production level into account for her hair typing chart.
That REALLY was a life saver for me, and helped me discover a good regimen for my hair. 😊
I’m not use to having hydrated hair, but for the last three months I’ve been staying on top of it... 4c hair that’s kept moisturized is so incredibly different, it had me questioning my hair type 😂
Yeeessssssssssss facts. I had to question my porosity when I started taking care of my hair lol
What products are you using? I'm still searching for the right ones for my combination 4 hair.
@@emcanet my hair responds best to water based, semi thick products. So far it's liking Camille Rose
I am a 2c/3a/3b/3c middle eastern-asian girl. I must say that I've learned so much from black community about taking care of curly hair. Now i am able to modify methods into my own fine high density curly hair and take care of it. Thank you all for your hard work. Curly girls all around the world can embrace their hair thanks to the efforts.
I've come to the conclusion that porosity, density, hydration & length can alter the appearance of curl patterns. Along with products, manipulation, etc. I have thick strands but low density & low porosity hair. When my hair was short, my curls were compacted but now that my hair has hang time, my curls have "loosened"/ stretched out but I also drink more water, take better care of my body internally, & steam my hair as needed which I think also helped. Plus, some people have more than one type of curl pattern in their hair. All this to say, you shouldn't get so caught up on hair typing. Instead, focus on learning YOUR hair. Your hair is as unique as you & it will not be the same as someone else's hair; embrace that. It may look like your hair resembles somebody else's but it is still not the same. Great video queen😍
Well Said!!!! 🙌🏾
Prosity, density and hydration does not change hair texture but how hair behaves to products !
I have thin strands, high density and low porosity 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ I also have multiple hair types. Well said though
I know thank u ... the veterans of natural hair know that ! That was supposed to be the next level of the natural hair community but it got halted by mistyping of hair ( not that it is important but it misleads many) ... i saw a lady talk about silky 4c and non silky ... it opened my eyes that not even all 4c is same... there are so many factors...but the point is stop acting like its not a curl pattern ...4c is a curl pattern ... n then dont sit there and say its not 4c when i do a wash n go or its hanging down my back ... our hair is long n grows ! Just cuz we not sitting around trying to prove it to everyone by straightening it all the time dont mean its not long... 🤷🏾♀️ im 4c n i live this reality n it gets on my nerves lol
Such a well said comment.
Yess gurl!! 4c hair is not limited to dryness , 4c is just a curl patern , tight 👌🏾

People trying to tell you about your hair? 😭😭 the real gag is hair typing isn’t even that important. I spent so much time trying to figure out my hair type just to realize that it doesn’t matter. Knowing your porosity is something that will change your life! We need to start promoting porosity knowledge more and not try to separate ourselves so much by hair type. Yes.. Now that you mention it.. I did notice that
Wait ur right
i cant tell what my hair type is i think it's 4b though
That's one reason I'm not to keep on this hair typing system. The truth is, I believe black people have more than one hair type. I have at least 3, the back of my head is a wavy kind of 3a, the middle of my head is 4c and the front and sides are 4a. I didn't mention 4b because it's seems 4b is just a mix of 4a and 4c.
Right bc that hair should be rolled up into a wiry shaped ball. I'm a real 4c

I think you'll enjoy it. ☺️
What did they say
Interesting how Andre Walker doesn’t have 3c on his hair chart when his hair literally appears to be 3c lol. This shows how subjective the whole hair typing thing is which is why people seem so confused. Also I feel like based on the description, it would make more sense for 4b and 4c to be switched (since 4c is a super tight 4a while 4b is a whole different thing), but that’s just my opinion
That makes sense to me as well based on the progression of the rest of the chart. Remember, though, 4b WAS last. 4c got added later and Andre didn’t have a say in that.
LaToya Ebony that makes a lot of sense. Also explains why people get so confused about 4c hair specifically
Omg yes cuz sometimes I feel like my hair is inbetween 4a and 4c in coil diameter but I have no 4b. That should be possible based on the chart but my hairnis what it is yk idek 7f that makes sense but yh
Yeah talk about self-hate. To exclude the exact hair type he possessed.
Lmao I noticed that about his hair. It's very strange and sad.
Yes I have 4a hair at the back it’s easily spotted as it hangs down lower but the majority of my head is 4c
Mine is the opposite. The back is 4c and the side and front are more 4a/b
sam my front is 4b/c and 4a in the back
SAME!
I WISH my 4c was in the front. Mine is all in the back so I look like I have a comb-over half the time.

This is great. I'm glad the record was set because many people believe every hair type is 4C and do not understand how difficult it is to find products specifically for 4C hair types. They're making more nowadays, but I am so glad this was clarified Thanks!

@@konpeitosama why so mean no one asked you to respond
i mean your hair is natural as well, it is not fake, is it?
@milk Yo stfu
My real issue with the "You're not 4C brigade" is that 1. They are claiming any one who has visible curls when their hair is soaking wet some how has a "desirable" hair texture. I don't know about ya'll but I don't walk around with soaking wet hair all day everyday. When I first went natural, most people looked at me sideways for daring to wear my natural hair un-manipulated, even other naturals who would pile products on their hair and manipulate it to no end. The same people who are now claiming that people with my hair texture/ curl pattern have a desirable hair texture are the same people who, a less than decade ago, would have told me I NEEDED a relaxer, or braids or a hot comb. i'm just wondering when any type of kinky hair suddenly became desirable. And let's keep it real; whose really desiring a slightly less kinky hair texture...doth protest too much. The obsession with hair length is what first turned me off about the natural hair community. I still cringe whenever someone thinks they are giving a compliment for a biological process that I have little control over. Then it was the so called "wash n go" that required no less than 10 products and an hour of your time before you could actually GO. The hair love is so fake.
Best hair comment I’ve read in 2021! And we’re only 4 hours in lol.
YES!!!!
Well many people (like myself) that have low porosity hair and aren’t able to retain much if any moisture at all in their hair and require the use of multiple products. And I don’t think moisturizing your hair is necessarily “manipulating” it either. I will admit that there are some people that pile products on top of their hair to achieve the “desirable” hair texture, but some also just need the extra products to keep their hair moisturized and hydrated.
@@kelab4599 I have low porosity hair too. I didn't even use the word moisturize in my comment at all as that's just a given need for all hair; nor was I trying to imply that using product or manipulation your hair is bad or wrong. My point was that manipulation is not the only way to be natural and that not using tons of product is an option; even for SOME of us low porosity folks. I'm really just still bitter about all that time and money I wasted on greasy and crunchy "wash n go's" Now; I don't use daily or topical moisturizers because they don't work for me; all they did is fake the appearance and feel of truly moisturized hair. I grew up always having blue magic or pink lotion in my hair and only knowing what straight hair felt like without products. When I went natural I tried ALL of the products and my scalp hated me for it, so I had to choose my skin or a slick do. I choose my skin. It took about a month and a good trim for my hair to get with it but I haven't had dry or brittle hair since going styling product free. I do a deep conditioner every few months as the weather changes but I pretty much only use shampoo and trim as needed(like now). Anytime I've tried to use a gel or something I breakout so I stick with styles that don't require slick edges or that are easy to take down.(Cause I do love an updo; that isn't a wet bun). Low porosity works both ways; yes it's hard to get moisture in; but once it's in it pretty much stays in unless your are doing something to strip it. ( Pst.... I don't even wrap my hair or use a satin pillow case. Blasphemy..!!!! ) I know different people have different needs for their hair even if it looks and feels exactly the same. The early days of the natural hair community really did try to address that fact but could never fully separate aesthetics from hair care in a meaningful way. If you have found that layering products keeps your hair healthy; that's truly awesome. It took me years to figure out that I actually needed almost nothing; and it's mosyly because I was defeated from my skin being tore up all the time.
This was long; I am so sorry. I just didn't want you or anyone else to think I was trying to shame anyone's journey. There is enough of that. I've felt enough of that on my own. We all know that loving our natural hair isn't about being cute or trendy.

Yesssss I’m so tired of hearing about hair types. It sounds like the “light skin vs. dark skin”.
I stopped caring about hair typing...ima start telling people I’m low porosity and I got that goooddd hair💯. As long as I’m loving my hair, there’s no need for naming it or putting it in a category. I’m all about health and moisture ❤️❤️
This was such a good video Toya! Do it boo!!!
Chary!!!! I miss you sis! Why the heck am I not getting your notifications? 🤔 🏃🏾♀️💨 *leaves to check out your channel*

Here I am, with 1A hair, absolutely loving this video!! Fascinated by different hair types. Great work :)
I finally found someone who actually knows how to take care of 4c hair! so many people have made fun of my 4c hair and I didn't know how to take care of it and your videos really helped me
My 4c looks different wet than dry and hydrated versus needing moisture. We are 4c ppl are not well versed in it
I love that you reiterate that hair typing is a guideline. I don't know why people obsess so much over the a,b or c, especially when most of us have multiple textures (curl patterns) on our head. Knowing that I have majority type 4 hair has helped me immensely in finding tips for my natural hair. I don't have any 4c curls in my head but I've been following you since your big chop and I've learned a lot. I just know my hair enough to know what is or is not relevant for me. Thank you so much for these detailed videos 😊😊😊
❤️❤️❤️
Humans just really like labels and categories. For better or for worse
I enjoyed how you put this together. It is like a short documentary. I love it! 🖤🖤
I barely have 2b curls but Im here to learn. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your informative and positive video! I come from a culture that labels black peoples hair as "bad hair" all together, they just call it bad hair straight up. Its crazy to me nobody ever questions why that is and how racist it is. I started a hairdresser course and they never even mention any 4 hair type! They never teached me how to do any hair that wasnt straight or mildly wavy!! So many people just excluded or treated as less!
When I realized how unprepared and uneducated I was, with all this and so little representation or positive info on black hair, I decided that wether I end up as a hairdresser or not I want to be educated. I want to unlearn that bad racist stigma and learn about and appreciate the beauty of black hair! We may look very different and have very different struggles but I dont want to be indefferent just because they are not mine.
Your voiceover game is top-notch, honest to God lol.
I love her voice. So calming
People don’t understand the power of a consistent, heat-free, hair regimen... I used to think people just had ‘good’ 4c hair but it’s really how you take care of it! And I’m South African, we have some of the coiliest natural hair! I’m getting locs, my journey is soon, but I have a few tidbits on my channel about loose 4c hair care. But loc journey loading 😆😆😆
The editing of this video was truly amazing !! I felt as though I was watching a mini documentary on 4c hair. Your voice is so soothing & this was very informal. You’ve got yourself a new subscriber ❤️❤️
👋🏾👋🏾 Welcome to my UA-cam fam! Thank you!! I’m happy to have you! 😊
Incredibly helpful! As a man rocking a natural afro for most of my life this video gave me a really nice new perspective.
I love that Keenan!
As a caucasian guy with mildly wavy (2b?) hair, I have no idea why youtube offered me up this video, but I found it fascinating, informative and wow, what beautiful hair you have LaToya!
These are the types of hair videos I love, showcasing the lesser celebrated types of hair❤️

"Kinky hair can have limited styling options"
Me with my blonde, stick-straight hair: I can barely keep a ponytail holder in and any volume I add lasts about 10 minutes, you sure about that bud?
For real though black hair in general is beautiful and you can make beautiful hairstyles with it that I never could with my natural hair. Also is it odd that I basically always see black women with afros as stunning? Afros are so beautiful and I think they compliment/frame the face so well
Thanks for the lovely video! I learned a lot
@@myescape607 Okay so your response gives me a bit of confusion. I'm assuming you are black given the context so PLEASE keep in mind that I'm trying to approach this respectfully and as someone who doesn't know that much about this. What I'm looking for as I respond to your comment is not a debate or to white-splain, I simply want to understand your point bc I don't completely get your comment and I want you to expand on your thinking
So first when I said afro I meant the hairstyle. When I think of afro as a hair type I thought that just applied to black hair (black as in the race of course). I was thinking afro comes from the word Africa. Essentially I was thinking "afro hairstyle" and "afro hair type" are separate, and that afro hair applies to black hair besides 4c hair. Do we have a different understanding of the word?
Also I'm assuming that you're basically saying that she does not have afro hair because she has curl definition in this video. Whether you are referring to hair capable of making an afro or 4c hair from what I can tell is irrelevant to your claim that she's wrong (again as far as I can tell from my interpretation of your comment)
What I got from the video is that she realizes she has a mix of textures which probably gives easily-recognizable curl definition in parts of her hair. This doesn't mean that all of her hair has that same amount of curl definition. Also from what I have seen, because black hair is so malleable, she can create curl definition where there wasn't any originally, and take it away when she doesn't want any. I think she said herself that 4c hair can be manipulated to give less definition. She also pointed out that her camera makes it look like she has more curl definition than she really does
So again I'm just looking to comprehend your comment because for me you didn't explain why those points she made were wrong in your opinion. To me it felt like she addressed what you mentioned
@@myescape607 I think she meant afro textured hair, her comment seemed to come from a place of admiration for afro textured hair
Josie Crane I don’t think it was necessary to explain that you weren’t looking to debate/argue. Many of us are more than capable of answering questions about our hair w/o being offended.
Regarding the response to your original comment, it looks like they have a different understanding of what an Afro is. The woman in the video does sport an Afro in some clips, and I think other AAs would agree.
theAjeroFamilyyy BS full African here no mix and my 4C hair looks like hers,
myescape yes she does. What do you mean she doesn’t have Afro hair? Afro hair encompasses 3c to 4c. It doesn’t have to be frizzy to still be Afro textured. That’s what we mean when we say Afro hair. Is hair that is of Afro texture.
In my 21years of life, I have never seen someone with my EXACT hair type and texture. Not even my own mother.💛
I'm 26 and I'm the same
And you never will. Almost no one has the same type of hair it's all about genetics and how your body responds to the environment, what you eat, and how hydrated or not your hair is. I have 3 sisters and 3 brothers, not one of our heads of hair is the same. I have twin daughters not even close to the same type of texture it's BARELY even the same color. I wish that people would get off hair type. It literally serves no purpose. Porosity, Strand Thickness, and Hair density are how you pick products.
Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame. All the way down from the 4a around the perimeter of head. This is my hair!!
N. My mother is indian I don’t know how my hair is similar to hers
A lot of people do have your hair type it’s just a lot of people relax their hair and wear wigs and weaves but many women also go natural as well.
Loved this. This made me love my 4c more. I am finally seeing how versatile my hair is now that I take care of it as it is (not as how it was when relaxed).
My hair always looks like springs. I'm just glad that it's growing nicely. I have been getting treatment for scarring alopecia. My hair is super-soft and fine in texture.
Im a Scandinavian woman with very fine, only slightly wavy hair. I’m so amazed how much you have this down to a science! This was really educational.
When I think 4c I think starpuppy and fluff nuget
The only difference between this woman's hair and starpuppy's hair is the length and the thickness (No. of hair stands).
I follow her too🥰...but the 2 of them have similar hair types.
You're so right. I started hydrating my high porosity hair daily for three weeks, and the tiny curls and coils I never thought I had showed up.
I tend not to subscribe to the typing system either. I have probably all the type 4s on my head.
@Faith Bank what products did you use to daily hydrate for 3 weeks?
How, exactly, did you perform your routine? I’d appreciate knowing!!
i am a white amateur artist

man, this video alone has taught me so much --
thank you for making it, it was really helpful and, honestly, quite inspiring too!
also, your hair is just gorgeous
I literally drooled this whole video 🤤 . I’m mesmerized by 4C hair.. I’m 4B with a mix of 4C and I think a little 4A.
You kinda remind me of Essence Atkins from the sitcom Half and Half. Kinda sound like her too.
Right. Her and Tia Mowry.
I was scrolling through the comments just to see if somebody said it. It is eerie! And Essence always looked related to the Mowry twins to me.
I said this too
I was thinking this same thing!
I was just thinking that
I see so much love and light in the comments section. I have learnt so much, from both your videos and your followers. In a matter of minutes. You're so gracious. You've made me fall in love with my hair. Stay awesome. ✨
I'm just chilling over here with my 2b hair gaining all sorts of knowledge that I hope I can apply to something someday. ❤️
Yes!! Thanks for posting this. It’s absolutely associated with neglected hair basically. 4c hair deserves better recognition!!
Me, a white person with straight, thin hair, loving the education
Your so lucky my natural hair is so hard to maintain
Thank you for this video!! It's so gross how 4c hair gets associated with just dry-looking damaged-looking hair. 4c coils are sooo beautiful! Thanks for showing the truth!
Every time I look at your hair, I’m just amazed on how fast it grew.
All we had when I was little was "good" hair or nappy hair. The categories, while constraining, are a big step up from that. Although nappiness isn't a bad thing to me. I've always equated naps with resilience, and that's a beautiful thing.
I've literally never felt seen when it comes to representation on youtube. You have the exact same hair as me...when I was a teenager I would always compare my hair to the hair influencers on here and get so disappointed and sometimes even cry out of frustration that my styles never came out the same and I had such a hard time finding anyone beyond 4a. I'm so glad I stumbled across your channel ❤️
I'm also a 4c hair owner, and I love it. My hair needs constant hydration followed by a sealant due to its low porosity on regular days. On wash day (once every 2 weeks) it needs the max hydration method, complete with deep conditioner under a heat cap. Winter is the hardest time to keep it hydrated because of the dry air. It loves the humidity in the summer. It took me a while to know what it needed to thrive. Not everyone knows what to do from day one. I still make mistakes, and when those happen I need to rely on a modified Cherry Lola method because I don't need as much protein.
I hit like immediately because I know it will be good! You are awesome!
🙌🏾 I appreciate you!! ❤️❤️❤️
👍🏾👊🏾✌🏾🇳🇬🇺🇸
4c hair is so diverse. There are 4c naturals when they wet their hair their little coils pop. For me it doesn’t work like that. I have coily hair but it’s more Afro like (meaning barely any form of definition) so no matter if I finger detangle and use those brushes to get the coils to pop it doesn’t work. And I moisturize my hair and again it doesn’t work but hair just doesn’t do it and it’s fine. So yes 4c hair is very different for everyone!
People have a hard time separating Hair Type/Curl Pattern from density, porosity, and strand size. People often confuse thickness with hair typing. I think porosity is more important when discussing products.
Yes! And density. I agree 100%
Thank you so much for all these easy to understand explanations and meticulous detail shots! I'm a white Swedish artist with type 1 hair and I like to watch haircare videos to learn how to draw different textures and hairstyles. It really helps to know *why* things work the way they do, too. You and your hair look beautiful and I love your peppy scientist energy :D
I have 4a natural hair and it really annoys me when girls with 3c or 4a say they have 4c hair just to get views. Then the newly natural 4c girls ask why their hair doesn’t look like that.
You know how some plants need to be watered daily? Well, that's how my hair is. A spray to my whole head and baby, life.
I feel like I’m watching my hair lol..so similar! I believe my hair is a mix of 4B and 4c, although my stylist says it’s just 4c. Idk I don’t think too deep into hair typing. I love this video, it was very informative.
People need to understand that 4c hair looks curly when wet. Have yall ever done a wash and go🤦♀️🖤 I think she got 4c hair stop hating yall
shes not 4C.
Her hair is mixed. She isn’t 4c all over. Maybe her hair is mainly 4c but with mixed 4a/b
@@myescape607 I have 4 c hair and it looks curly when wet... I just know what works for me and what my hair needs. I am 4c and 4b I’m a mixed hair type.
@@AnastasiaLUVSU I do t think so either there is too much stretch in her she is either 4a or 4b.
@@myescape607 because regardless of 2, 3 or 4, absolutely NOBODY with curly hair has the exact same pattern all over their head.
All hair is beautiful as long as it's healthy. Healthy 4c hair will always look better than unhealthy 3A or any other type. The idea that 4c has to look dry is crazy. My mother has 4c hair and doesn't look dry. I have come to admire my 4a/4b/ 4c hairtype just as much as any when understanding hair health and hair potential.
This video was very helpful to me as a white adoptive parent. I really appreciate the way all of the information was broken down. My daughter's hair is a mix of 4c and 4b. And she's a little fashion baby she loves having her hair done and I feel grateful for this video and all the other people who have helped me and who put content like this.
❤
lmao to the intro! "I can already hear people typing in the comments" lol. I don't have 4c, but I love watching all kinky/coily hair videos to help learn about new methods & hairstyles my kinky curls may benefit from :D
Hi LaToya. I've been watching you since your Toyaboo2 days. I have 3c/4a hair. I've been watching, and will continue to watch your videos, because you're entertaining and insightful, and I always come away with something positive. Your videos foster the kind of inclusiveness that can be missing, in the natural hair community, at times. Thank you for sharing all that you do here🙂💛!
Heeeyy!!! I definitely know your screen name. You've been rocking with me for YEARS!! I'm so honored you are still here with me. THANK YOU!!
Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to have YOUR exact hair type. I can’t believe people would alter this. It’s perfection 😍
I love how you embrace your natural coils. Be Blessed!
This was such a GREAT video, your delivery was an awesome way to not only help people understand their hair, but to respect what their hair is telling them that it needs. Thanks for posting this.

I've always used to call my hair 4xyz because it really used to break combs when it was dry and just difficult. I never grew it out and always relaxed right away. Well, I've been growing it for about 1.5 years now and did twists and overloaded my hair with oils, butters, and moisture. When I had to wash, my hair was so soft and I saw definition. Shocked and confused me. Had me questioning my 4c status.
Here's one thing I learned about my 4c hair - if I'm fighting with it, then I'm doing something wrong. I moisturize and no longer ever try to manipulate it when it's dry. If I meet resistance, I try to calmly figure out where the resistance is and ease the tension at that point; this obviously requires a lot of patience.
I'm comfortable and patient now. Whenever I lose patience is when I reach for a texturizer. I'm trying to see how far I can go with this.
Thanks for showing the versatility of 4c hair.
Phew!!
Question: Have you ever tried a Revair dryer? If yes, would you recommend it? I currently don't own a dryer but have been looking at the Revair dryer. If not, do you have any recommendations for a blowout?
Thanks in advance!!
I’ve never tried the Revair one, bit of like too lol! I just use a regular one from target. I think it’s Conair.
People should not get to hung up on all the hair types and type of curl patterns . YES, the sheet as been super useful. I only know I am a type 4 . My hair can be super confusing as times .
The point what I'm trying to say is that you should always take things with a pinch of salt. Yes studies were made but it is still just their opinion.
Because people are taking this chart serious it has created diversity in the natural hair community .Where this was the time we should stand and walk this road together .
I agree also, I am 4c of full african decent. I grew up simply calling my hair african hair texture. Now, there are so many terms, which bring down our hair and living in a mixed society, some people from African diaspora and others are uneducated and buying into the negativity. Let us continue to love our hair when dry or wet, take care of it like God wanted to us do from the beginning
omg I'm finally seeing someone explain what my 4c hair does. People tell me I'm not 4c for the way my hair coils. Absolutely loved this video.
Saaaame!!
@@myescape607 I think most people should focus on making their hair healthy and knowing their porosity more
@@myescape607 woah!.....that is extremely false....I'm African.....we all don't have 4c hair.....and it doesn't even require you to be mixed ....I literally know a lot of people who don't have 4c hair.....there is a lot of diversity when it comes to the hair of women across African countries...

I love that all kind of people, different cultures/backgrounds/races with different hair types/textures are in the comment section. Awareness only happens if it’s reaching a multitude of people. I will stop being close minded and thinking that 4C hair only looks one particular way. Thank you for the video.

Wow, now you got me feelin good about my hair. Thank you Sis, you are beautiful on the inside as well as the outside. God bless

Finally, a video that actually make sense concerning 4c hair. My toddler hair looks the same as yours when dry and wet. I been doing the max hydration method on her 4 months now and it's a life saver.
Hi there, excuse me, yess, thank you, umm, could we please have a lookbook of all those hairstyles? Yes, thank you 🌺
Over here with barely any texture (2b), but I love watching videos and learning about textured hair :)
Hair videos are hella soothing!
Thank you again for the great content. I’m in the transition phase, 9.5 months no relaxer, and I’m 99.9% sure it’s all 4c. You make me excited about learning about my hair.

🥰 That makes me so happy!! I think I didn’t wait a full year to big chop. I got so impatient! Take your time sis. I’m just happy to know I can help in the process. ❤️
I saw those comments. It's really reached absurdity, they saw one 4a strand and suddenly you can't claim 4c anymore? Most type 4s have all the types, it's the extent to which that matters and it's very clear you're majority 4c. And thanks for clearing up that 4c has a curl pattern! Working on the premises of a poor typing system instead of taking your valuable tips.
4c hair has become synonymous for nappy. So folk will say they have 4c because they think it’s more of than nappy but it is still coming from a deficit place. I appreciate this video.
You in the glasses & red shirt giving us eyebrow was the cutest thing ever lol 🥰😋😘 i’m like 2C- 3A, just enjoy these kinds of videos, find them mesmerizing... deeper than hair channel works with this hair type a lot & again, mesmerizing to watch her do silk presses & trims 😍😋
