Taking it off road YESSS!!!!
I have a Toyota chr 2019, I had to go up a hill at some camping sight and I unfortunately got stuck half way so I decided to go down the hill and reverse my way back up the hill. That worked better than driving forward lol
Starbucks is prob the toughest terrain for this nice car...
Hard to watch the torture of the C-HR with the CVT. it would struggle even in snow. Send it back.
Ya I'd much rather sacrifice a few percent of fuel economy with a traditional torque converter auto than deal with garbage CVTs.
@@jldude84 or manual
@Ezra Redgwell me to
@Joshua Eaton no because when you do mess up you can't spin the tires to tell TC that your in trouble and need help
@@jldude84 remember cvt was used in formula the stepless shifting meant it acelarate more efficient but got banned before even competition by fia imagine the robustness or developement due to the competetiveness of f1 if it werent banned
Tommy, If you are trying to #shame Toyota into bringing a cheap, genuine 4X4 to our market by doing videos like this then you are doing an excellent job. May I suggest something priced like a FJ but with a design budget including larger windows. If a new model is too much fuss for TMC then the 2 door Prado will do quite nicely.
Yes excellent jobs especially with the roller tests lol
2-wheel drive = 1 wheel drive. AWD without lockers = 1 wheel drive with a small bonus. permanent AWD with center diff-lock or 4wd = 2 wheel drive. Same with rear lockers = 3 wheel drive. 4wd with all center, rear and front lockers = 4WD.
Exactly
I think it's cool, not boring, think outside the box and I do have one of this CHR. It gets me from point A to point B. All I care is RELIABILITY baby.
The chr has a diamond theme to it, if you look all around the car you will find the diamond pattern everywhere. You should have tried to put it in sport mode, everything tights up and throttle response is much better. Still it’s not meant for off road lol. 👍👍
Yeah you can get these in a hybrid AWD version where I live, they would sell like crazy in America
A buddy of mine put some all-terrains on his and that thing is pretty good actually 👌
What I thought they didn’t have a AWD model 😳😳😳😳😳
@@AllAboutPurple Yes, same, as much I know, there is no AWD
There is one item I think is essential with these cars. Emergency chains that can be put on or removed in 15 minutes or less. Also familiarize urself with the manual shifting
I did it last year in Europe with rental Hyundai Santa fe. You can get it to some surprising places.
awd or fwd version? awd version santa fe is pretty capable, would not struggle with the hill shown in the video.
A Peugeot 2008 or 3008 with grip control can make it further. They're front wheel drive and Peugeot's grip control is quite amazing actually. It uses the 2 front wheels to the max and has sand and rocks and snow mode. It actually performs really well. So actually you maybe don't need awd but no one else does grip control other than Peugeot and Citroen for you to test a terrain control front wheel drive car in the US.
Field is dry
I think a Barbie doll power wheel would do better
Love seeing videos like this vs the typical off-roaders all the time
You buy this car for the fuel efficiency and reliability not offroad ability. I doubt even the AWD version of this car would struggle because of the CVT and regular car ground clearance.
This thing isn’t fuel efficiency, corolla hatchback has more power and more fuel efficiency, absolutely no reason to buy this than Corolla Hatchback.
@@blackwhirlwind1245ur personal opinion but ok
Man I really hate cvt's in the auto industry. I suppose they serve a fuel savings purpose but just toss in a 10spd and call it a day. Better all around in my opinion.
Toyota cats are reliable as hell
@@flight2k5 typical for Toyota lol my wife has a jeep with a cvt and its not as reliable for sure. My issue is we live in rural Ontario and it's a pain at times because of the aggressive torque cut it does to save damage. Decent on fuel but not as capable, towing rating is lower than a traditional automatic transmission.
Or even a 6spd with appropriately spaced ratios. The improvement in fuel economy of a CVT over other types of transmissions is maybe 10% on a really good day. My Kia Soul has a 6spd auto and MORE power than this and still gets 29-30 city and ~32-34 hwy. And it's not designed so weak that it's gonna explode at 60,001 miles.
jldude84 but they don’t explode at 60000 miles 😂🤣
@@flight2k5 That's because that's what most powertrain warranties cover.
Any chance you guys will get a Passport for a real trail test?
Yes that will be nice
I own this vehicle it’s fun to drive and great mpg, but to be honest it has very little ground clearance if you take this off road you’re liable to tear off something underneath. I don’t think anybody that buys a CHR realistically thinks that they’re going to use it hit the rocky trails.
Those OEM tires are not good for that terrain - my RAV4 has Falken WIldpeak AT tires and can handle that easily. The C-HR is more of a urban/commuter vehicle.
This vs a Crosstrek
It gets worse mpg
No awd
worse ground clearance
less interior space
less legroom
Is the really worth the less than 1k price difference?
Plus you can also get the crosstrek in a manual variant, for the same price or cheaper
You know I love Toyota as a brand. Having said that, a CVT transmission makes a car absolutely useless....even Subaru with AWD and a CVT is useless. Saw that a while back on TFL. For me...if it doesn't have a clutch or an automatic with gears....just walk away.
I thought the same thing, but at least with road cars, they are fine. I've driven their latest CVTs and unless someone told you, you would have no idea. Modern CVTs are in all cars in this price point/segment, even experienced drivers can't tell they are CVTs anymore with the shift programming they have. I doubt all of them would use them if they are all destined to suck, especially companies like Honda, Toyota, Hyundai/KIA.
This comes down to the driver I can take a two wheel drive anywhere I want to
All you need to do is be your own lsd by using your other foot to apply the breaks haha.
I have taken my beater 1991 front wheel drive Nissan Maxima with no traction control or abs everywhere and on very steep hills and haven't gotten stuck.
Nothing beats a real automatic transmission and v6 engine. I can take off from dirt hills without ever spinning the wheels. Everyone just stares as their piece of garbage cvt's with low profile wheels just spin all day long 😂
i’ve been challenging my CHR off-road since literally the day i got it in 2021. Off roaring where forest service roads start and ends through to lakes off-road aswell as living on the beach in Texas, throughout my nomadic move to colorado continuing my car camping to Colorado primitive campsites and teetering on trailheads to Mountains and icy roads that to passes that were labeled closed but hadn’t been gated off yet. it’s done great so far and i’m considering a lift.
How do you get a lift on it?
Toyotas solution to this has been the Yaris Cross, which you can get as an AWD car but with an electric motor on the rear axle and the engine driving the front axle. It's not cheap either.
You can always walk up the hill lol.
For $26,000 I’d just buy a used truck and upgrade it with the rest of the money 😂
For 26k you could get a brand new 2019 xl 4x4 ranger 😂 Toyota is ridiculous
This is a good video to reference for all those in the comments section saying “I could make it up that hill in my Civic.” I drove out there in my Jeep Patriot and the steep/loose nature of these hill climbs they use in their videos are no joke.
Shame they didn't make an AWD version. It would make a really cool rally car. An option for a regular automatic would be great too.
This car is fine, it's essentially a tall riding Corolla for someone who wants the ease of entry and exit and a larger greenhouse. Its not meant for any off-road duty, I mean it has 18" wheels with street tires in a compact package.
I'd love to see how far you guys can take a 2wd Jeep Grand Cherokee
@@DEEuroworks I'm sure the wk2 would go much further
Awd yes, fwd doubt much further.
@@DEEuroworks no such thing as an awd wk2. And look at the wk2 all together. And it's rwd or 4x4
Jeep Joseph i thought the whole conversation is about a fwd Cherokee, yea rwd grand Cherokee would do much better than any fwd only crossover.
@@DEEuroworks Yes, RWD Grand Cherokee
My wife has a C-HR lol..... and go figures, I WANTED her to just get the cheaper Corolla XSE Hatchback. Her C-HR was $28,000. The loaded Corolla Hatch was like $24,000.... She has only had the car for 18 months now and she’s planning on trading it in for a RAV4 Adventure/XSE Hybrid.
But I bette not say “I told you so” lol
Women are crazy about huge crossovers/SUVs. Perhaps because women are so small, they compensate by driving these huge heavy vehicles. That's why your wife preferred the C-HR over the Corolla hatch, because the C-HR looked bigger.
Nice to see someone who knows all the tricks have a go at it.. Hyundai Venue would be interesting in same situation since it can be had with a manual transmission and 8' ground clearance (less chance of bottoming-out with momentum). Also Lexus 250H would return surprising results....if I was Lexus, I"d jump on this one, since it'll be a great way to demonstrate ability of rear hybrid drive.
Well in the Balkans you will see VW Golf 1, 2 or 3 do the roads you wouldn't take with a tractor at speed! Momentum is the name of the game with FWD open diff 😂
Those old Golfs (like all old cars) have good ground clearance. New cars, even crossovers, have very small ground clearance. This Toyota for example is barely over 14 cm ground clearance. That's very low to the ground, you can barely get over a sidewalk curb without hitting the front bumper.
Thank you so much for posting this video! I assumed I had better stick to the beaten path (meaning PAVEMENT) in my C-HR, but you definitely proved it with this. Again, thank you, and nicely done my man! 👍
In my country the C-HR is available with AWD and is a very popular vehicle, sadly even with AWD it sucks off road, it has no ground clearance, no good angles, and the CVT ruins the AWD traction, I had to tow my friend's C-HR from a simple camping trail. The two other vehicles were a Subaru XV and a Volkswagen Tiguan that went up with 0 problems.
All season tires. Not recommend. Put some offroad wheels and place big mud tires at low tire pressure with 1 1/2 inch strut spacers to lift it. You'll do good offroading.
Omg I just dealt with this. However it was a really steep hill loose soil. My suv is fwd. we just packed up from camping. I told the wife this will be the difficult hill. Problem was I lost track of when the hill was coming up. Sue to lots of hills. So I was too close to another vehicle that slowed down in the hill. If I was able to use my momentum, I would not have been stuck. One of my pals gave me a slight push with his hands and we were free. I’m sure I could have turn off traction control. Or have the whole line of us back up and allow me room to get back up to speed. But from a dead stop it’s a pain. Fed is capable but not always. Tread of tire helps too.
The classir move with fwd is hitting obstacles in reverse 😃
I actually would like to see that... see how it really does.
For the same money I got a AWD Ford Escape. Plus it has more ground clearance.
Could have gotten a more capable cherokee
Your mpg and reliability goes down though 👎
But Ford is big piles of 💩💩💩💩💩
@Ezra Redgwell
1. what`s doge?
2. if you meant dodge they don't have a vehicle that combats the escape. The closest fca competitor to the escape would be the kl which is better in pretty much every single way
@Ezra RedgwellThe hell? Your ignorance is amazing. That's Jeep not Dodge try again
Honestly Tommy 🙂, the scenery around you for this episode of TFL off road is hands down incredible. I've been to CO a few times to fly out of the airport in Denver since I live up in Western South Dakota. I have not ventured out into the mountains and trails in CO, you live in a beautiful state. Anyhow back to CH-R, I think Toyota will eventually offer AWD, they might move more CH-Rs. Again, awesome episode Tommy.
My nephew wants to go over landing with me I’ve been studying this car for a while this is the best video I’ve found
The only thing I don't like about my CHR is it does not support auto locking doors and this is an overlooked safety feature in this day and age
It could probably survive the hill but damages could incur underneath without proper skid plates protection
What was that clicking noise? Didn't sound good.
I have a 2018 CHR. I love it, I haven’t taken it to the “dirt roads” yet, but I definitely would like to see an AWD option for this zippy compact crossover. THAT, and abit more horsepower would complete it. (Possibly add the Lexus UX 2.0L Turbo engine 🤷🏻♂️)
Crossover isn't about off-roading, it's about ride height and easy of entry and exit. They are simply tall wagons.
C-HR proves one point, you need all wheel drive. So every SUV that has AWD is worth buying. The vehicle is point less in my opinion.
At the end of the day its just a slightly funky looking pumped up European spec Corolla. We also get the better power unit options - 2.0 hybrid is the one to have.
I actually like it( at first I didn’t)🙃 . And has good ground clearance . There are a few sedans I like, SUBARU’S LEGACY- but not good ground clearance.
Power/Torque, CVT, FWD, All-Season tires, Clearance, Altitude...not optimal to say the least.
I suspect this is going to end up as one of Toyota's extinct vehicles.
The styling is not going to age well, it's not very practical, and that engine sounds like something that would be right at home in 2005.
I suspect AWD would price it too close to the lower trimmed RAV4, and negate anyone from even considering this
(C)rappy practicality
(H)orribly aging
(R)ubbish offroad
Crossover.
Why so mad🙁? Toyotas are the most reliable vehicles ever made and Doug DeMuro likes it😊
Heck off boy, your just hating it cuz its beautiful lol
@@RexenPrime If by beautiful you mean hideous like almost all modern Toyotas, then you're right.
@@KB-bh9hp i will admit, before the slight facelift of the 2020 models the chr looked kinda like a big bug lol. But they do look pretty neat inside and out, they just dont feel as good as they look when you go to touch all of the interior and exterior parts. They feel cheap and weak. I think most modern toyotas look really good, but every design is subject to the opinion of whoever may see it.
@@RexenPrime Imo, Mazda and Ford make the best looking mainstream cars currently, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. I like the character line this has on the side where it swoops up as it nears the bodysides, looks good, I don't hate it, it's unique. But unique design on its own doesn't make it automatically good design.
Would different tires help ???
The rear end looks like a Caddy from the tail fins era had an illicit love child with a Prius... and that's being kind.
You are using what look like very smooth summer tires. Not sure that's too fair a test. Would like to see same test in all terrain or winter tires.
they're ab to invent the hatchback crossover crossover category
Its more about the ground clearance, so you don't damage your exhaust and other parts on the rocks
I think its not for the majority but definitely appealing for a niche
It's simply not fair. This isn't about Fwd off road. It's about how bad the street tires suck for traction.
Wrong weeks, and this car is not mad for an off-road experience
Wish it came is AWD. As it is it's basically just a slightly taller Corolla Hatchback with older tech and a worse engine. Unless you want a leather interior there is no reason to buy the C-HR over the Corolla Hatchback.
That is sad but I have only drove front wheel drive cars and have never had a issue like that car does
See a fair few of these around in the U.K. and funnily it has only been offered as a hybrid car. Also only front wheel drive.
I think it's a very cool car. Don't like the color, but I could live with it. Maybe a dark grey or silver/black.
AWD CH-R has the 1.2l engine though, I don't think many people would buy that in the US.
People actually ask if you need AWD to go off road? As if 4x4/AWD is some marketing gimmick to make people pay for features they don't need? Smh.
You don’t need 4 or awd to go on a trail. I live in va and there are plenty of country boys who take old ass 2wd duel tank fords out in the trail and do fine. The driver just sucks in all these videos. No understanding on how to drive.
Nothing more than a urban yuppie cruiser.Maybe try the Yaris Cross.
Momentum is definitely the key for a FWD car.
You should take the new Ford Escape to see how well it will do
I hope the trailblazer at 10:25 in the background is an indicator of a video to come! ;)
Speed. And power. Speed is the answer for fwd offroading.
If it was a hybrid would have had made it. Hybrids has a plenty of torque from 0 rpm and the eCVT is way better with better tc set up. Driving axles not so important. Uphill obviously rwd or awd are way better.
If you want more space just put the back seats down. This is not a family car to have kids in or in-laws, more of a single driver doing work around the city.
Seeeeeennnnnnd iiiiiiiit!!!! Yes Tommy, great video bro!!!
I could do this in my 2019 Kia Soul! dual clutch on road tires.
You would overheat the dual clutch quick. They aren't meant for slow crawling
@@J-W.- Never said I would go slow. lol.
The Wrangler and new Bronco are in big trouble with this new beast on the market...
I know, watch out guys lol.
IF I went small like this thing I would get a trailblazer. The trailblazer made it up that same hill.
I'll stick with my '12 4runner. Hope you made it back out.
Can a 4 inch lift kit be attached to the CH-R???
Rav4 adventure? Mm I would say that Hybrid you reviewed last year was better. At least you did not tell them to buy a Rav4 TRD. LOL. That is what makes you legit in my book. You are aware of what is what. This C-HR is fine as a commuter but no, not ideal for any of this stuff. More aggressive tires help a little, but even with that aid, the CVT is going to kill its performance.
My Mom bought a 2020 CHR and last winter Toyota had a recall on the block heater. They asked people to come in so service can disconnect the block heat. It was -35 C when they told people in Winnipeg to stop using the block heater. Today Toyota has not replaced the block heater and winter is coming. I am done with Toyota and am telling people Toyota has nose dived in quality and are not fixing warranty issues in an appropriate time frame. I will never buy Toyota. Bought a new 2022 Mazda CX 5 GT Sport and I am very happy with it. Toyota is terrible.
This was painful to watch...kinda wish they would give us the hybrid version, pretty sure that it comes with e-AWD; I understand that it doesn't do a HELL of a lot, but it would get up that friggin' hill. Thoughts?
I don't understand the americans obsession with off road driving. Are there no roads to the mall parking lot overthere?
ps. In the netherlands you see these only as a hybrid. Mostly driven by pensioners or as a lease car.
😂😂 true
It's all about the tires
My CHR lower bumper rubs coming out of my barely to no incline driveway.
Make a video of taking out the Hyundai kona electric in Colorado
The tyres profile are stiff otherwise she's got enough toque she just need to get some psi off the tyres and some rugged handling, she can go wild👍🤷
I work for Toyota and I honestly can say that I am not a fan of this car. It handles decently, stops pretty good and gets decent fuel economy, but that's all it has to offer. The styling is awkward, the interior is cramped, the cargo space is pretty much nil, the engine is made weaker by the CVT transmission and it is overpriced for the segment.Funny enough these aren't selling all that well, but the Lexus UX that is related to this vehicle actually sells decently. I wonder if it's because the styling isn't a weird and that model is available with AWD (as a hybrid) .
I also work for Toyota and I can assure you it's a very good vehicle. Value is there. It's unique in its own. Not like everything else. Easy in and out. And if you are a Toyota worker. Google jd power auto plant manufacturers in the world. Tell me what you see brah.
Lexus UX has the more powerful 2 liter Corolla engine with 169 hp and more torque. Lexus UX also has the Corolla CVT with a physical first gear which makes it more reliable and better off the line acceleration.
I have a 4wd patriot for way less than that and it works fine on and off road. Some of it is the driver too lol.
Just send it haha
Get to the hill!
Momentum and picking the right lines is key when you take a fwd car off road, something this guy still doesn't understand apperently
The distant cousin of the Pontiac Aztec.
I think the Aztec would make it up the hill
Well dang, I guess I’m gonna need a new vehicle now that I want to spend most of my time traveling from state forest to state forest lol
It looks like a juke.
Side Note: my old 2000 taurus would go anywhere I pointed it. (But I was paid to take that car.... so I didn't mind thrashing it)
I was GIVEN 1 as a rental car once, I GAVE it right back and said keep this POS and give me something else. I got a Nissan Altima and it was 100 times better. :) This was before CVT started infecting manufactures like a pandemic.
traction control never undermines traction
Seriously man, that thing is never meant to leave the pavement,no matter what it looks like.
The HRV has AWD option. Tbh I wouldn't buy the C-HR just because of the CVT
144hp two front wheel drive!!
How do u think it will go this hill🤣
The question is can the 2021 Bronco make it up the hill?
Why not add. I think it would sell great in the states
A crossover? As much use as a chocolate fire guard 🤪
Can u try Acura RDX 2008 model up that hill please!
