Great review. I think reel manufacturers are very aware of people like you. For that reason they improved quality in the lower price range, and we fishermen are better off. Thanks! 👊
I like my battle 2 but much prefer my Daiwa bg overall. These seem like great upgrades from the battle 2. I'd really like to see the battle 3 and high speed version, along with the dx models in depth compared with a BG. Feel like the comp just got tighter with this new lineup.
Your Battle 2 is basically a Pursuit 3
Wow very surprising to see a brass main gear in a sub $150 reel. Do we know if penn will put the DX series reel out as a combo package? That would be interesting to see.
Penn have had brass main gears in the older ssv . They were great quality until a period they went cheap with Haibo fishing company and rebranded a bunch of crap. It’s good to see they go back to their roots.
Does it really have a graphite rotor? I thought that all battle 3:s, regular and DX, were all aluminium.
Great video! If you can get your hands on one, could you do a video on the new Penn low profile reels?
Are you planning to review PENN Clash II? I am very curious about your opinion regarding that reel.
Besides all the new bells and whistles that it has this is one of the best things penn has ever done with the color. I work in a tackle shop and people could care less about the upgrades they look at the battle 3 in the case next to the Dx and say let me have the sliver one. I’m easily selling 6x more dx’s that battle 3 based on color before I even explain the difference’s
So with that being said which reel should I get for inshore the dx or daiwa fuego or bg
Exactly all that and no pick
“Dx” stands for dealer exclusive
No. the ’X’ means silver and ’D’ for dark 😂 3:53

No, it stands for D-Generation X 😂
@@KingV98 no it doesn’t lol

Great video Scoob, an amazing reel on paper, wondering how it performs in real life. It seems like Penn finally created a Lite version of their slammer - which was totally missing from their line up.
Sidenote - Being totally subjective here, but dunno why you got so pumped up with the aesthetics, going all silver on this reel is totally a downgrade to my eyes. Really loved the black + accent scheme penn had going for the last decade.
On the other hand I really like the silver-black paintjob. Especially if you have a blue braid. I fell in love with the reel and I had to buy it. :D (Even tough I like the black and gold version too! )
For now, I am more than satisfied.
Agreed
Your reviews are incredible! I just found your site. The next time I’m looking for a reel I’ll be coming here first! Seriously...you are the reel whisperer!
Dang ,you musta had several cups of coffee before you started this one. Anywho ,I had to look hard ,but found one .delivered for $119.95 three mo. after this review. Hope it has a flounder in its future.
I have a battle 3 5000 do you think it can handle small to medium Halibut in Alaska?
What parts would I need to change to make a fierce 3 into a battle 3
okuma azores has a bottom stack drag washer for $140.00 , wonder if you can upgrade battle 2 zink gears with battle 3 dx brass gears ?
So at that similar price point, would you go with a Spinfisher 6 or the Battle 3 DX ?
Good question. I'm curious too
For the price or just overall quality
@@eastcoastoutdoors902 bang for the buck
@@Floridaoutdoor for the price you can’t beat a battle 3 DX from how impressed he was with the seals and the overall bearings. He also said penn would send some replacements if they ever got rusted. I just ordered myself some
Depends on whether your reel gets splashed a lot. If not, go DX. If it does get splashed often, go spinfisher. I beach fish so spinfisher for me but on boat or pier I would go with the DX. Just my 2 cents.
After watching this I don't feel so bad now that I bought the battle 3 dx 800 for my 11ft pen prevail rod. Thanks for the info. I usually clean my own reels so this was a help
How does the battle dx compare to the spin fisher 6 ?
On 6000 size and up, there is little difference between the DX and the regular Battle 3. Both have the brass main and pinion gear and have a round power handle.
So the only difference would be the bearing supported drag and the color on the 6000 up?
@@TubeYou7 yes
Hope you can get your hands on a Penn Slammer IV soon for a tear down! The rep said DX stands for Dealer Exclusive - meaning Penn will not be selling them directly on their website.
Dx vs bg?
Recently bought a spinfisher VI 4500 and is a huge mess, windknots and winknots.....i can not use any Penn reel with the spool full like the one on yourvideo. I use 20 pound braid and the problem only stops when the amount of line is clearly below the black line on the spool marker.
I have a Spinfisher Vl6500 with 40lb braid and and have no issues with it with a full spool..the way to fix a simple problem like what you are experiencing is to take a cloth or rag and lightly soak it with warm water and hold your line tightly in the rag while spooling the reel instead of your fingers.this little trick helps take the twists out of your line while spooling it.
I bought a Battle 3 Dx 8000 today, should be fine paired with a 12 ft rod for shore fishing. I wanted a Daiwa BG 8000 but they are nowhere to be found in Canada and my second choice was the Battle 3 8000 until I saw the Battle 3 DX model $50.00 cheaper. I had to get it and I did. Thanks for the info and for what to check inside the beast that the 8000 seems to be at 27.7 oz.
Sir pleassssse can please give the exact bearing AR clutch bearing size
this is a long shot, but is it possible to interchange the sealing components from the spinfisher, and plant it into the battle dx
good question. I never really thought about it to be honest. Im' going to say no due to the sideplate bearing pockets being different depts. (off the top of my head.
@@TackleAdvisors appreciate your reply bud. The reason I ask is because I have a rather old banged up spinfisher but mechanically is still going 100s, and I'm sure the seals are still perfect, so I was just curious to see if I could save a few bucks, get the battle and convert it into a semi sealed battle.
Hello,I'm wanting to start fishing again,so in the look out for a reel, max I wanna spend is around 100-160,I've been seeing the Daiwa bg6500,but seeing the Penn battle for around the same price, now I'm not sure, similar drag of 25-33,which is more recommended
Sir please do answer is the rotor metal or graphite
Awesome
I love penn reels
looking into this....... Purchased a Fathom II Star Drag Casting Special... Got home, took it out of the box, and inspected it. With the spool engaged and holding the spool stationary with my thumb, I can move the crank handle in reverse about 3 or 4 degrees. This just seems way too sloppy and very disappointing. I'm thinking where the pinion gear mates with the spool drive is where all the slop is.
I took it back ...... Checked 2 other new in the box, they all had the same problem. They are made in China .... I cant believe Penn would allow this. Its in the pinion gear where it mates with the spool drive is where the slop is. Its like using a 11mm wrench to break a 10mm bolt loose ..... You know its going to strip given enough force.
Is this reel better than the spinfisher vi?
Carolina-bred, fishing 'otaku' (fishing nut) here in Japan (38 years now) ... loving your patter. In another era, good enough to make a television show out of it.
But I couldn't help but to notice some parallels between the way car manufacturing in the U.S. and Japan had gone for awhile. The do-it-yourself thing was quickly faded out in the Japanese post-war economy, long before the American handy-man started going the way of the Dodo. But like you said, while Penns are still user-friendly service-able, Japanese reels are increasingly leaving that business model.
In my twilight years, I'm heading more towards the finesse / ultra-light end of both fresh and salt water ... and recently replaced a couple of old Shimano Twin Power 1000s with Daiwa Luvias 2000 shallow spools ... great for my intended purposes (caught a few pecker-sized jack crevalle at Shimoda a couple of weeks ago), but impossible to service. What is frustrating is that neither Daiwa nor Shimano will service reels older than 5 years ... basically creating a 5 year rentier business model - unless you can find a small 3rd party shop that services them. And this makes no sense to a user who buys a Stella as a legacy reel to hand down decades later. Just an old salt mumbling to himself here.
Cheers from Japan, and wondering if you got that Daiwa handle knob from Hedgehog? I thought I'd try my Japanese language chops with them ... only to find they use translation software, and automatically switched to English when they saw my name. 😂
"Pecker sized" 😂😂😂
@@jasonstokley7274 Yeah ... too bad I can't post photos of those brutes here ... must be every bit of 75 ... uh ... millimeters. Erect. 😂
@@stevemartin4249 Hey, i also live in Japan. Where are you located? Maybe we could go fishin!

Battle3 8000HS. Vs Battle3 8000DX You should do a comparison on both of those those are the brand new ones that just came out it would be nice to see which one is better
the main gear beauty pageant had me dead XD
Apparently DX stands for "Dealer Exclusive". And you got your wish....Slammer gets a DX version as well.
When are you doing the Penn slammer 4 DX IT LOOK AMAZING
I likey! I like the color as well! But if you say Penn wants to compete with the Stradic FL...but sorry not even close. I own the FL 4000 and battle 3 4000 sizes and the smoothness and lightness on the Stradic waaaay better...and I have them on both with 15lb braid and hands down the Stradic out casts the Battle like I'd say 10 to 15 more yards especially when using swimbaits. But the Battle 3 is more improved though on smoothness than the previous. The DX is still something I might get as well...it looks like a nice finesse reel.
The weight comparison of the main gear was interesting but I was curious as to the total weight comparison of each real?
Yo i found that combo your boy threw overboard. Caught a 30lb StryPah!
Lmao
Have you gotten your hands on a battle 3 hs? If so, how does it compare to the dx? Thank you so much!
Compare some 50 dollar budget reels like the penn pursuit iii
I have a pursuit II 4000, and honestly, I like it. I have it on one of my backup rigs. I've had it for a while, and never taken it apart or cleaned it. I've also caught some large fish (for me, 30-40 lb black drum and some 20-30 lb salmon) with no issues.
I'd recommend a pursuit if you are looking for something cheap on a backup rig, or if you don't do a ton of fishing.
What’s the difference between these reels and the Penn battle 3 LE reel on the white rod, bought the battle 3 LE combo but I’m not sure what LE means no matter where I look can’t get any info on it
What is it that makes wind knots when casting with a spinning reel?
Usually uneven or loose line lay
dx = dealer exclusive only some stores sell it ( here in australia)
Guess I lucked out I have 2 battle ii and never had the issue with wind knots
Penn battle dx vs Shimano spheros inshore?
Never mind the reels. Where did you get that screwdriver???? all mine are green.... real nice.
Hi.. comparing with this 2 reel which one is best ,
penn battle (3)6000 vs daiwa bg Magsealed.. I am planning to buy I am little confused which 1 to buy plz your suggestion..
Targeting for Big Fish like a GT barramundi..
For one time investment ..I am from India budget problems so which is good reel please suggest.. Thanks
I use bg magseal 3000 almost 2year still smooth af...i use to big barra to 10-20kg bara
I thought the DX stood for Deluxe, but another review said it means "Dealer Exclusive".
Dealer exclusive which ended up being bullshit....they ended up all over the place.
What braid is that on the Spinfisher? Love that color.
I have a battle 2 in the 1000 size and get wind knots all the time, I figured it was just me or the line I was using
I'd love to see it compared with the Spheros inshore 4k after you get some fish caught on it. I was about to order a Spheros, but seeing this reel and its apparent quality at the same price point has got me doubting which I might want. I had terrible experiences with my SSV (irreparably failed zinc gear and trashed pinion, seized line roller, wind knots, terrible line lay e.g.), which I thought had turned me off of Penn spinners forever, but they seem to have fixed most of those issues and I'd like to see how they fare against one another. Downgraded old model Shimano vs upgraded new model Penn is seeming pretty interesting
How can I put a black handle, and an EVA foam power knob on my 4500 slammer 3? Are there parts from other reels that would fit?
is the procyon al review gonna come ?
Excellent review. Curious to ask you because clearly you know reels, would it be worth it to upgrade my Penn 4000 LE with the brass gear from a DX?
is this channel still going? haven't seen any recent uploads??
Would you suggest a 4000 or a 5000 do for a 10’ surf rod? I really want to get one of the DX but don’t know what size
I just bought the last two 2500 battle 3 dx reels in stock at Captain Harry’s for my upcoming Canada fishing trip. I don’t know whether to thank you or curse you for making me spend $250. (I tried your link first but they were sold out).
Have you fished with these reels yet?
Heavy as Hell !!!!!!!!! Boat anchors
Love your reviews....
Question..does the spin fisher VI have the wave spring?...
I have an 8000 I use for sturgeon and hopefully pelagic if I can ever travel again
Yes it does.
@@TackleAdvisors thanks bud
Is the Battle 3 high speed a good quality reel ?
I caught big ass fish on my penn battle 3 -6000 series for $200 and the same time caught fish bigger off a daiwa d-wave I bought for $40 so it ain’t how much u spend on a rod and reel it’s the fisherman
You can catch big fish on a cheap reel like the daiwa d wave. But cheaper reels use cheap gears, cheap bearings, cheap drag washers, cheap handles. You get what you pay for. I used a cheap daiwa sweepfire reel before. It felt like a toy. Then I bought a Penn fierce reel that was $105. You can instantly feel the difference in quality.
Great stuff as usual Scoob!
Is it laying line as well as the BG?
Going by the standard b3... It's very close in terms of profile.
At this $110-130 price point for ocean fishing on a boat (5000 & 6000 sizes).... would you recommend this BTLIII DX Tsunami Shield, or another?? Thanks!
I'd go battle. I've put more time on the shield but the battle is proving to be a very capable reel and it's gearing looks like it would outlast the shield
@@TackleAdvisors Thank you Sir!!
Works for me!! Thank you!
I even have a 10,000 size awesome reels by far for the money.
I just used a dremel to same off the bail trip on my battle 1 haha
Does the handle from the DX fit into the Spinfisher six?
yes
For the regular battle 3 what kind of main gear does it use? Why is it black?
Anodized aluminum. (the black is the anodizing or some form of protective coating.)
Does the Battle 4000 HS have a brass main gear?
Only the DX in a 4k has brass
Can u plez do a review on the quantum accurist s3 baitcaster plez.

You should do a comparison between the 19 Certate and the 20 TwinPower. That seems like it would be interesting. 🤷♂️
I feel like he would choose the certate over the twin power
Certate is certainly a winner. My friend has 19 certate and 20 TP, always bringing and using them together every trip. But 20 TP began to corrode after 10x trips
I compared the Daiwa Certate LT to the new Twin Power XD 2021 and even the new one did not hold a candle against the level of smoothness and refinement the Certate LT has.
The only redeeming feature I saw from the new Twin Power against the Certate Lt, is that its more simple to work on.
Other than that, to me it felt like just a Stradic FL with better components.
So, from your reviewing, wich reel are good, The Penn Bettle 3 or The Penn Bettle 3 DX...???. Can someone tell me wich one more better..🥺🥺
The DX Is the better battle
@@TackleAdvisors how about a comparison with the spinfisher 6 ? The DX seems more refined but provide less waterproofing.
@@TackleAdvisors how about between the XD the spinfisher and the BG? About to buy one in a larger size for my surf rod. I already have 2 BG's so I was looking at possibly a spin Fisher or a DX but I'm not opposed to another BG.
