I think Ernie Johnson’s role on Inside The NBA is being undervalued here.
I don't think he meant to undervalue Ernie. I think he's moreso talking about Kenny and Chuck to be willing to find a new gig since they are least tied (or committed) to TNT. Ernie I believe has already said that he plans to stay at TNT and Shaq also has done more with TNT outside the main Inside broadcast.

Ernie is the godfather. Everyone knows that. But what he said was he is very loyal to TNT and probably wouldn’t leave.
Ernie isn't the star, but he's almost like the perfect person for a sports show. Knows enough about the game, is funny & likeable, has a voice, and keeps the show going & on track
Honestly what would Ernie do without this show at TNT? He is just negotiating. Remember it’s still technically possible Warner keeps the NBA. Of course right now Ernie is saying pro-TNT things.

Ernie feels so tied to Turner that he can't imagine leaving (he's been with Inside the NBA longer than Letterman hosted his show!), but if/when the contract goes elsewhere I think he'll have a heart to heart with Zaslav to get his blessing to move on. Buuut, Ernie is also 67 y.o. so maybe he wants to ease into retirement, and have lesser duties with Turner limited to the NCAA tournament coverage, MLB, etc.
its not just barkely and kenny, tnt has a relaxed chill vibe and they do hilarious gimmicks and skits like putting the memes that people are posting on twitter in real time. i absolutely do not trust espn or nbc to have the pulse of the fans like that. they are the kings of forced corny cringe or overly self seriousness
100%. Even TNT's hockey show is fun and it's in what, its second year?
Losing Ernie will be a huge blow. A new host will take years to build up the respect that Ernie commands and even then I don't think the old chemistry will be recaptured.

This. It’s not Inside without Ernie. On the nights he’s out, it’s terrible. The two essential components to Inside are Ernie and Chuck, you can’t replace either of them.
If another network puts Barkley, Shaq, and Kenny with another host it won’t be the same. It’ll be like when the late 90s Rockets with Barkley and Hakeem tried to replace Drexler with Scottie, it never fit.
The only hope is that someone (probably Amazon) works out a Kirk Herbstreit type deal (Kirk does CFB for ESPN and TNF for Amazon) where Ernie is able to do Inside for another company while staying at Turner for baseball and college basketball. They’d also need to bring all the producers and behind the scenes folks over with them too.

I'll say it: Shaq is the most dispensable. He's a thin-skinned prick who mumbles and says little of note except the occasional "touch 'em up, eh Chuck?" and constant reminders that he has rings. His laugh is beyond infectious that's about all he offers. Chuck is the heart and Ernie is the brains. And what people miss with Kenny is he's the only decent guy of the former players. So maybe he's the soul. As noted, Shaq is a dick and Chuck does Chuck. I doubt either does anything for anybody else except dump some cash on a charity and show up for the photo op. Besides, Kenny's circumlocutions are pure gold. Kenny is the king of unintentional comedy on that show. And, as always, Chuck laughs about it and Shaq is mean.
I don't think it could exist on another network. ESPN, Amazon and NBC are all too PC for that kind of humor. Tony Kornheiser got suspended for 2 weeks after making a joke about Hannah Storm's schoolgirl outfit.
Ernie, Kenny and Chuck make the show. If anyone is expendable it’s Shaq imo.
Shaq honestly kind of sucks. His biggest contribution is being the butt of Chuck's jokes.

EJ is a very intelligent man. I’m going to assume that if he is loyal to TNT it’s for a very good reason. It’s not about whether the “fans” will support him it’s about honoring the relationships that changed his life even when he could make more money elsewhere.
Bill approaches things from the mindset of what will people think, but the truth is doing good in the world is the goal and what people think is irrelevant
Plus Ernie will be pushing 70 by the time this happens. I don't think he'd want to relocate, probably be ready to retire.

Ernie does the majority of the heavy lifting on that show and makes it look effortless, doesn't work without him.
As a Panthers fan of 30 years, nothing brings me more joy than being openly hated by Simmons.

I fully agree with your NFL scheduling pet peeve and always wish they would split the kickoff windows. But the main reason has to be that they want to send most of the country that big four o'clock ET game. Best example of that was back in the 90s when Dallas and San Francisco were head-and-shoulders the best two teams and they'd meet in a huge 4PM matchup in early November. Most of the country could see that game except for New York where we were stuck with just Jets and Giants. You're probably right though, they do hate us.

PGA Championship should be a CHOICE, like we all have, between carry/cart/pull cart. Is it an advantage to ride?? Definitely for Tiger, but for Scottie and Xander? Of course it is. Or is it? What would they choose? Why? THAT's the gimmick.
As for the C's, the biggest difference between them and most of those others is that only NOW have their two best players hit their prime. People's view of this team and their "disappointing" performance simply forget 1) That Tatum just turned 26 2) that first ECF appearance was an anomaly and 3) the only real, flat-out Fail they had was last year. A year they had to hire a new coach 5 minutes before the season began. They are still, very much "on track." Yes, they need to win it--this year is clearly their best chance. Next year might be their last good chance. But let's stop talking about them like they've blown it already or are behind somehow. They are not.
There's never enough patience in the NBA . That said I don't think the Celtics can close the deal unless they get impactful play from KP in the Finals. For what it's worth Robert Horry thinks the depth of Boston will have them hoisting the trophy in June. We'll see

We already have the results of the experiment without TNT and the NBA stinks on ESPN or any other network. NBA choosing money over fan experience, we know how that ends. The on floor product has been terrible for 15 years.
lol the NBA CBA splits all revenues equally between the players and the owners. If they don’t get the most money they can from their tv deal they would violate the CBA and the players would strike.😂

The problem is the Celtics is that from a spectator's point of view, it is just bad basketball most night, They win because they have great athletes. They are not a good situational team. They do not have a good situational coach. To me, they are the ultimate analytics team. Here is the game plan:shoot 40 threes no matter what. And during the regular season this means they will win a lot of games, even if they take bad shot, playmake poorly, and play ugly basketball. Needless to say, all of this stuff is not fun to watch from the perspective of someone who loves basketball.
But it does not stop here. I would add that we like teams that play the game on a high-level every night, but Celtics play to level of the competition. Also, we like teams that exhibit greatness by rising to the occasion in the clutch, not shrinking. The Celtics simply do not have this trait. They actually need to blow teams up based on just having better athletes and nothing else. These are additional reason the Celtics are just not likeable. Again, most nights it is just not good basketball. They are not well-coached and their stars simply do not understand the game on a high-level--bad shots, poor playmaking, dumb turnovers, bad decisions etc.
Then, of course, there has been this constant attempt for the last 4 or 5 years to shoehorn Jason Tatum into the position of one of the league's best players and he is just not there. Sorry. There are 10 more guys in the league that I am more scared of in a 4th quarter. He is certainly a top 10-15 player, but I think this desperate attempt to put him among the elite players in the league actually hurts his game, messes with his head, and has prevented the Celtics from developing chemistry. For Tatum's sake, I wish it would stop.. From my perspective, I definitely sick and tired of hearing it. It has been shoved down our throats for several years now, so at this point, I actually have contempt for it.
TNT has such a great show for a reason. Another network won’t be able to emulate it. TNT just doesn’t have the money to compete with ESPN, NBC etc

Most hateable roster ever, at least Bruins fans are legit hockey fans and I can wrap my arms around them in our brotherhood for the sport, but Panthers fans (with the exception of a few of you) are just fairweather fans.

ESPN guys never understand continuity. Or presentation and ambience. Inside the NBA works because the TNT music is perfect, Ernie is well seasoned and Patriarchal. And Charles, Kenny and Shaq are like brothers watching a basketball game. It’s a mix that can’t be changed. And when you come from ESPN, you’re not going to have that understanding.
Plus ESPN is way 2 woke & PC - ie imo CB won't be making fat ladies in San Antonio jokes
Okay look. Chuck has already said he's not doing Inside without EJ. EJ is locked down contractually at TNT. His dad EJ Sr was a big broadcast guy for the Braves where he made great friends with Ted Turner. EJ is essentially family to TNT and its staff. Inside the NBA will not exist in any form with any of the guys next year.

Inside the NBA doesn’t work without Ernie. He’s the point guard for that show. The times when the other 3 have had a substitute host it wasn’t the same. Ernie and Chuck are both irreplaceable, I don’t want to watch a version of the show that doesn’t have those two, and frankly they need to just keep all four of them together at this point, it’s too established.
Amazon needs to work out a deal where they lease Ernie for the NBA so that he can stay with Turner for everything else (like Kirk Herbstreit), that’s the only way this could work out.
