No one expected Jrue to end up on the Celts, they played it soooo perfectly bc Portland would’ve sent him basically anywhere.
I hugely appreciate the historical, in-person depth Bill and William Simmons have on Celtics history. They are true spectators, not just fans. I enjoyed their recap of a fan heckling Kyrie Irving. It reminds me of AJ Leibling's great writing on boxing, when he describes the crowd as Joe Louis got knocked out by Rocky Marciano, like with a woman crying. It takes you there. And it's always great to hear about the legends, like Bill Walton, Larry Bird, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
That was great, you get why sports are so big in Boston. It bonds generations and families in a way few things can. Well, the Jrue and Porzingis pickups that had us all picking the Celtics in November showed why we felt that way. Porzingis in there reminded me that "Oh, they rolled through the playoffs WITHOUT this guy? The scoring AND the defense. Also, Jaylen Brown silences the critics that they should move him. And Jrue as leader: no flopping or whining but playing top tier defense and showing how champions are made.

My favorite podcast are with Bill and House, it's always entertaining and hilarious. And I do really enjoy the podcasts with the dynamic duo of Bill and Ryen. But I LOVE when Bill is talking basketball with his dad on the pod.
The series that Bill and his Dad are talking about as far as Andrew Toney killing the Celtics is concerned is the 1982 ECF. It went seven games, much like the series between the two teams did in 1981, with Boston coming back from 3-1 deficits both times. The Celtics won and made their first Finals with Bird in 1981, but in 1982 the 76ers lit up the Celtics at Boston Garden in game 7, with Toney going for a 34-3-6 and 2 steals on 14/23 FG and 6/8 FT. For the series, Andrew Toney led the 76ers, averaging a 22-3-4 on 49.6% shooting and 78.6% from the line on 6 attempts a game. This earned him the nickname “The Boston Strangler” and the following season, Philadelphia won the title in a sweep over the Lakers with Toney as its third option behind Moses and the Doctor. He’s one of the most underrated players ever even though he only had five or six quality seasons.
Andrew Toney was a bonafide menace. One of the greatest 1v1 defenders I’ve ever seen. Just relentless. He’s the primary reason Boston traded for Dennis Johnson in ‘83. They needed their own lockdown defender to deal with the likes of Magic, Isiah, Sidney Moncrief, etc.
Tatum was unbelievable defensively in game 1. His ability to switch in pick and roll to completely shut down the threat of the roll man or the threat of the ball handler out on the perimeter is what collapsed the Mavs offense. Pretty surprising neither of them picked up on that or else I’m sure they would’ve mentioned it.
Tatum is still sacrificing his offense at the start of the game and he was antsy to get on the board in the latter part of the game. He should be more aggressive next game to knock out those second-game blues. Otherwise, his game management was okay, other than those bad turnovers.
Don't understand why he plays the way he does offensively, he doesn't attack nearly enough. He needs to assert himself more in the first half. For being a max player, he seems fine to be the Beta to Brown and everyone else on the team.
@@jeremiahsomermeyer8528He was too excited for game one and tried to be a playmaker a little too much. I think Tatum was overthinking it and we will see a monster performance from him in the second game (37-8-5, 12/21 FG, 4/9 3P, 9/10 FT).
I thought tatum played the game that was given to him. Dallas collapsed on him every time he had the ball. He worked with what he had and they made it hard for him to get his offense off. He found his guys though
I like your dad, but he's way too hard on Mazzulla, as are many Celtic fans. He's doing a great job with this team and the players all seem to like him. Geez, what do you people want?? Just look at his record. ☘️
Could the NBA please address the double step back shot that is clearly a travel. Luka's double step back at the end of the 1st half was absolutely ridiculous
How did the refs or announcers not say anything he was straight pushing him on screens and box outs holding him trying to free up to set a screen. It was blatantly obvious.
As a Denver fan 45:54 hurts because it’s true. We choked a 20 point third quarter lead at home. The wolves were our worst matchup just like the Celtics are the Mavs worst matchup. I think we get a big kyrie game but the Celtics pull it out in OT 127-121. Should be a good series.
WIth Luka you have to get in his face. he's such a big and accurate shooter that you have to get in his face and make him work for every shot. Holiday did a great job with Luka.
Is this is Bill’s hotel room or at his father’s house? How close does his dad live? In the audio version, Bill said they started recording at 11:15pm. The game ended at 10:45pm ish
I Felt coming into this series (still do) that Boston is gonna Sweep Dallas Bill Simmons. They are Laser Focused and Are gonna Shoot the Ball Lights Out as a Team. And that Boston was gonna Win the Finals no matter which West Opponent they played. A sort of back-handed favorite and having their playoff run dumped on by media is Fueling this Title run.
I didnt see the game but after watching a few games during the season the ups and downs the Celtics and their fans are a function of shooting so many 3s . I dont understand why other teams dont play outside-in making the cletics shoot 2s or anything not 3s. That would be my strategy.
its crazy to me that before coming to the celtics porzingas got nothing but shade from every analyst. suddenly he is good again? im not saying he isnt a good player, i never thought he deserved the crap he got. its like how everyone said aaron rodgers was trash and then suddenly he was the greatest qb ever.
Tatum also guarded their CENTER (thinking of all the forwards who can do that...oh, pretty much no one). That COMPLETELY discombobulated Dallas, all game long.
The Celtics did the one thing I have been waiting for all playoffs. Whoever was Lukas’s man, attacked him and made him play D and he didn’t. So the Dallas defense collapses on Luka’s man . That is how they ended up with all those open three-pointers and open shots.
Just 9 assists, because Dallas' three-point shots (after a pass) weren't falling, and their players going to the rim after a pass were getting blocked or getting their shots altered.
Minnesota just collapsed after the Denver series. They are a young team that couldn't handle the journey to the top. Somehow I felt like the Mavs had an easier trip in the WCF because Minnesota just shot themselves in the foot over and over again. Going up against Denver is draining, physically and mentally. And once they got past them, they have nothing left. That's exactly what a talented young team go through in the growing stage. I can already see haters will say that the Celtics did not have to go through OKC and Denver and Minnesota, as if every champion had to beat all 15 other teams in the playoffs to win a title.
The Celtics hadn't played for more than a week. They got tired, so started shooting threes and stopped moving the ball in the third. Got their wind back, and think Mavs ran out of gas.
It must be a joy to share your passion with your father and make a living through it. Bravo.
