It was my dads birthday yesterday. He passed 20 years ago. This made me cry. Appreciate him Bill.
Happy belated birthday to your dad. I’m sure you have done some great things in the last 20 years and that he’s proud of you.
Same, my Dad passed 4 years ago and I miss watching games with him.
Idk why, but I love that small moment when Bill makes fun of his dad for his 5 pee breaks, his dad chuckles, and the conversation just keeps moving. Small joke, even smaller reaction. You can just tell how comfortable their relationship is.
I came here to say the exact exact same thing. This man seems to live a beautiful life.
Mr S seems like a lovely, balanced man. And his intelligent analysis of the game makes you realize where Bill got his chops on basketball.
It's so cool to share your sports passion with your pops! Miss you dad RIP
Bill Simmons is joined by Jon Voight from Heat
Vincent Hanna: So then, if you spot me coming around that corner... you just gonna walk out on this woman? Not say good bye?
Neil McCauley: That's the discipline.
I hope this kid and his garage band podcast with his dad takes off one day
God I love the pods with your Dad. Thanks Bill!
Bill needs to bring his dad on the pod more man. Hes so freaking hilarious without even trying. Not letting go of the second row Joe moniker was pure gold. Little things he’ll be like well I’ll give em that 😂😂😂
Or Bill would say something and his dad would say oh it must have been the assistant coaches idea 😂
@@mitch369 yea and Bill killed me when he’s like it’s 12am I need to get you home. Then he’s like what are you gonna do rewatch the game? Hes one of us (us being die hard Celts fans) cuz I already rewatched the game myself. Lol
It’s just so cool to have this conversation with your dad in a podcast! Die hard Celtics fan watching his 10 NBA finals with his son just talking. Awesome stuff!
More of your Dad evaluating these Finals games, please!
love that you did a video form for this!
I think they had some kind of exclusive deal with Spotify for their video and it ended or they renegotiated or something but now The Ringer can put full videos up FINALLY!
Miss my dad
@@tylersize808People who leave comments like this are sad. I guarantee that at some point during your daily life you wish that your life was different and that you low key don’t like yourself. That’s why you leave comments like this.
More Dr. Bill please! If he's willing I think way more people would love to hear from him after Game 2 Sunday night! Nothing against Ryen Russillo, but we can hear his commentary anytime. Listening to Celtics-fan-in-Chief Dr. Bill talk about being at the game and watching his team play is just solid gold. I do think he's a little too hard still on Joe Mazz though!
Have Ryen phone in or something, go three man on Sunday, we need more Dr Bill!
Bill Simmons is so old he and his dad look like brothers. lol 🔥🔥🔥
Bro I was 12 and had an aol account back in 90s and I remember looking forward to reading the Boston section of aol to read this cat lol and I’m 40 now!!! But that’s back when he wrote
@@enejkelecija7377 I heard about the days when Bill wrote, heard that’s how he got his stripes in sports journalism. Respect, from a Knicks fan.
“Old man’s son is also old man”
One of my favorite Onion headlines lol
Hey Bill, this is actually your Dad’s 11th NBA Finals, and he has a 6-4 record thus far (won ’74, ’76, ’81, ’84, ’86, ’08; lost ’85, ’87, ’10, ’22). Go Celtics! ☘
I heard him miss one of them when counting it out on the pod the other day too. Proves how many awesome games Bill and his dad have been to
nailed it, Jrue locked up everyone he was guarding. What a trade brad stevens pulled off for him.
He's an even better human being than he is a basketball player. And he's a helluva player.
My dad passed away 20 months ago.. I cant watch football (soccer) without thinking of the after-match discussions with him.
I can imitate the conversation but it doesnt feel the same anymore.
I love your dad podcasts .. its so special.. his knowledge of the game further exceeds 99% of media analysts.. he is so factual so passionate about the team and reminds me of my dad.. please have him on after all games till we raise banner 18..
What would Bill from say 7 years ago think about Bill praising Porzingas and texting Doc Rivers like his BFF 😂
He’d prolly be fine with it if it meant the Celtics won a Finals game by 20 points lmfao
Love Dr. Simmons.
Jru is such an underrated player. I knew when the Bucks traded him, they would take a step back.
trading the best on ball defender in the NBA for one of the worst lol Dame cant defend
@@alexlol3260but come on, they didn’t trade dame for defending. They traded for him bc the offensive potential of a dame and giannis duo was too high to resist. Most if not all GMs would’ve done it. No one expected Jrue to end up on the Celts, they played it soooo perfectly bc Portland would’ve sent him basically anywhere.
Always good to hear bill Simmons insight on the Celtics and there history , good to see his dad too , go bill Simmons ! 😃😃😃
Bill and his dad reactions after games are my favorite episodes. His dad is a genuine fan.
Lookin' good Dr. Bill!
Well, the Jrue and Porzingis pickups that had us all picking the Celtics in November showed why we felt that way. Porzingis in there reminded me that "Oh, they rolled through the playoffs WITHOUT this guy? The scoring AND the defense. Also, Jaylen Brown silences the critics that they should move him. And Jrue as leader: no flopping or whining but playing top tier defense and showing how champions are made.
@@nocturne311 That's a little strong, given that it's never been done before. But it's true KP adds that third killer option and some length at the rim that probably makes them unbeatable. My only doubt was his mobility, but obviously they waited until he was 100%
First time seeing Bills dad. He looks younger than I thought!
Same, here. At first, I thought he was gonna pull out an acoustic guitar and sing “Wooden Ships”.
Bills Dad has a great lid!
I didn’t know Bill Simmons dad was Albert Einstein 🫡
Andrew Toney- The Boston Strangler!
The series that Bill and his Dad are talking about as far as Andrew Toney killing the Celtics is concerned is the 1982 ECF. It went seven games, much like the series between the two teams did in 1981, with Boston coming back from 3-1 deficits both times. The Celtics won and made their first Finals with Bird in 1981, but in 1982 the 76ers lit up the Celtics at Boston Garden in game 7, with Toney going for a 34-3-6 and 2 steals on 14/23 FG and 6/8 FT. For the series, Andrew Toney led the 76ers, averaging a 22-3-4 on 49.6% shooting and 78.6% from the line on 6 attempts a game. This earned him the nickname “The Boston Strangler” and the following season, Philadelphia won the title in a sweep over the Lakers with Toney as its third option behind Moses and the Doctor. He’s one of the most underrated players ever even though he only had five or six quality seasons.
Andrew Toney was a bonafide menace. One of the greatest 1v1 defenders I’ve ever seen. Just relentless.
He’s the primary reason Boston traded for Dennis Johnson in ‘83. They needed their own lockdown defender to deal with the likes of Magic, Isiah, Sidney Moncrief, etc.
I love listening to you talk about your favorite team with your pops. Do every game please
Always good to see Dr. Bill (and he's looking good out there)!
This was a great pod. Hope we get more dad episodes for the finals.
Love your vibe with your ol man
More
Bring back pls
Tatum was unbelievable defensively in game 1. His ability to switch in pick and roll to completely shut down the threat of the roll man or the threat of the ball handler out on the perimeter is what collapsed the Mavs offense. Pretty surprising neither of them picked up on that or else I’m sure they would’ve mentioned it.
I hugely appreciate the historical, in-person depth Bill and William Simmons have on Celtics history. They are true spectators, not just fans. I enjoyed their recap of a fan heckling Kyrie Irving. It reminds me of AJ Leibling's great writing on boxing, when he describes the crowd as Joe Louis got knocked out by Rocky Marciano, like with a woman crying. It takes you there. And it's always great to hear about the legends, like Bill Walton, Larry Bird, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
That was great, you get why sports are so big in Boston. It bonds generations and families in a way few things can. Bill is and has been a Californian for decades, but the love of the Celtics and his bond with his Dad is so strong. That made me smile. No sports show could ever leave a listener feeling as nostalgic as I currently feel having just listened to this father and son duo. Ditch Ryen and bring back your Dad on Sunday, he enjoys doing this with you. It would mean a lot to him.
Bill Simmons and Chris Broussard are my favorite people to listen to and have the best knowledge about this sport. I love this episode with Bills dad! Amazing Bill keep it up!
Bill Simmons has David Crosby for a dad
Dammit you beat me to it, good call, I was thinking the exact same thing lmao!! Definitely a resemblance.
I thought tatum played the game that was given to him. Dallas collapsed on him every time he had the ball. He worked with what he had and they made it hard for him to get his offense off. He found his guys though
My favorite podcast are with Bill and House, it's always entertaining and hilarious. And I do really enjoy the podcasts with the dynamic duo of Bill and Ryen.
But I LOVE when Bill is talking basketball with his dad on the pod.
Love these segments
Tatum is still sacrificing his offense at the start of the game and he was antsy to get on the board in the latter part of the game. He should be more aggressive next game to knock out those second-game blues. Otherwise, his game management was okay, other than those bad turnovers.
Don't understand why he plays the way he does offensively, he doesn't attack nearly enough. He needs to assert himself more in the first half. For being a max player, he seems fine to be the Beta to Brown and everyone else on the team.
@@jeremiahsomermeyer8528He was too excited for game one and tried to be a playmaker a little too much. I think Tatum was overthinking it and we will see a monster performance from him in the second game (37-8-5, 12/21 FG, 4/9 3P, 9/10 FT).
I like your dad, but he's way too hard on Mazzulla, as are many Celtic fans. He's doing a great job with this team and the players all seem to like him. Geez, what do you people want?? Just look at his record. ☘️
What more does Joe Mazz have to do to prove his worth? He proved it time and time and time again.
Bill's dad looked hella proud when he said I texted Doc the other day. Ok, we see u Bill.
Simple stat: when the Celtics shoot 33.3% from 3 or better, they are 67-7 including 11-1 in the playoffs.
Celtics shot 38% from 3.
This podcast is why season tickets are a better way to spend fun money than vacations. Build family memories over 50 years.
Lively had like 25 fouls lol
That dudes defense was just to blatantly shove KP over and over when he went to set picks.
How did the refs or announcers not say anything he was straight pushing him on screens and box outs holding him trying to free up to set a screen. It was blatantly obvious.
I saw it, too. It looked as sign of desperation disguised as "being physical".
@@esrguzman hahahah same the im already in foul trouble they wont call this one strategy
Bill being from Connecticut is something I NEVER knew
Could the NBA please address the double step back shot that is clearly a travel. Luka's double step back at the end of the 1st half was absolutely ridiculous
What about taking a full step and then landing on 2 feet, pivoting then going up again?? I see that all the time and it drives me nuts
I hope your son can join both of you in the future for these, pretty cool.
So cool to see you analyze the game with your dad.
Love these two
Cause it's a pod with Bill's Dad (& KP went all legend after being out for so long) I do not mind 24/7 Celtics content for that alone. Talk that talk.
Always the best pod guest.
This format is awesome.
Having 2 days of rest between game 1 and game 2 is a huge advantage for the C’s.
As a fan it sucks cuz I hate the wait. For our guys though absolutely needed
Dr Bill straight from the battlefields of Antietam
Bill I’ll never forget your legendary fist pump on the James Young pick. He may not have worked out but that was every C’s fan back in ‘14 😂
This is not what I expected Dr. Bill to look like for whatever reason lol. Anyway I always like when he is a guest on the pod. Go Mavs!
Great great talk fellas!!! Bring him on MORE!!!
3:41 as a Lakers fan watching Anthony Davis this speaks to my soul
More of Bill's dad pleaseeeeeeee
These up and downs with big leads blown has been every single NBA game I've ever watched
Yeah people think the Celtics do it all time which is not true at all. Take a look at the "beloved Western Conference series" and you'll see every top team blew leads of 20+ at one point or another
The Celtics did the one thing I have been waiting for all playoffs. Whoever was Lukas’s man, attacked him and made him play D and he didn’t. So the Dallas defense collapses on Luka’s man . That is how they ended up with all those open three-pointers and open shots.
Bill Simmons when he likes what a team did but doesn’t like the coach: “They did X… I don’t know how intentional it was.” 😂
The Derek Rose mention… the greatest point guard I’ve ever seen hands down… we will never know 😞 😞 🌹
Wha a great pod
I love Papa Simmons! Random note--how is his hair darker than Bill's??
That's hilarious :)
It’s crazy that his dad only looks 10 years older than Bill
I’m kept waiting for the Boston crowd to start chanting “Sweet Tea” at Luka, but it never happened.
Also, excited for game 2
WIth Luka you have to get in his face. he's such a big and accurate shooter that you have to get in his face and make him work for every shot. Holiday did a great job with Luka.
Nick Wright will look like Bill Simmons’ dad in 40 years. 🤷🏻♂️👍🏻😂
JB for mvp
Celtics have 2 guys like Ant. You can see when the Mavs cut it to 8, Tatum and Brown just started driving and they couldnt stop it.
I going to say the only normal thing in this comment section; It's nice to see Bill and his dad.
I always get a little chuckle that Bill's dad is Albert Einstein.
thanks
Tatum also guarded their CENTER (thinking of all the forwards who can do that...oh, pretty much no one). That COMPLETELY discombobulated Dallas, all game long.
The Celtics hadn't played for more than a week. They got tired, so started shooting threes and stopped moving the ball in the third. Got their wind back, and think Mavs ran out of gas.
I got the Mavericks in 7 as I don't have full faith in 2nd Row Joe. Two epic tennis matches this morning!
I Felt coming into this series (still do) that Boston is gonna Sweep Dallas Bill Simmons. They are Laser Focused and Are gonna Shoot the Ball Lights Out as a Team. And that Boston was gonna Win the Finals no matter which West Opponent they played. A sort of back-handed favorite and having their playoff run dumped on by media is Fueling this Title run.
When Dr. Simmons is smiling i know im going to have a bad day
Would love to hear Ryen join this crew instead of ousting your dad for game 2
Crazy hair genetics in this family
I watch every Celtics game and see your father at games occasionally. Its the hair
Andrew Toney was the scariest opponent as a Celtics fan
Just 9 assists, because Dallas' three-point shots (after a pass) weren't falling, and their players going to the rim after a pass were getting blocked or getting their shots altered.
Need more of bills dad!!
Love how Dr. Simmons pronounces Luka's name "Lukar" ☘️
As a Denver fan 45:54 hurts because it’s true. We choked a 20 point third quarter lead at home. The wolves were our worst matchup just like the Celtics are the Mavs worst matchup. I think we get a big kyrie game but the Celtics pull it out in OT 127-121. Should be a good series.
Que hermoso esto loco
we need Russillo AND Papa Simmons
That only corner 3 was with 1 minute left when the benches were in
Bill's dad is much more knowledgeable than most professional NBA analysts, and easy to listen to. He like the anti-Stephen A Smith
He's been a C's season ticket holder for what like 50 years ? I'm sure he knows the game better than 99%
I don’t think I ever seen bills dad.Big fan tho. He’s very astute in his observations.
Come on Bill you can bump Ryen for your dad to be on the Sunday podcast.
It must be a joy to share your passion with your father and make a living through it. Bravo.
