As I continue to add more native plants to my garden, one that I cannot get enough of is Amsonia. This North American native plant fills a wonderful niche in our garden, and is a high performing plant from season to season. In this video I speak primarily about Amsonia hubrichtii & A. tabernaemontana, which are the two most widely available species in my region. However, there are many more excellent species out there with different functions in the garden. That being said, many tend to prefer the same garden conditions as the ones I demonstrate with in this video.
Next time you are looking for a wonderful, billowy native perennial, look no further than Amsonia!

Hi Devin . The amsonia plant looks so beautiful in your garden . Ilove the blue flowers and I will get this plant .Have anice day .
Thank you! You too!
These are new to me and I am very interested in planting after seeing your garden. They are beautiful. I am in zone 6A.
You will love them!! Mine are popping up right now
Such a pretty plant! Thank you for introducing us to all these beautiful plants! 😀💫🌺
I hope you can add one to your garden!
@@plantvibrations Yes I am going to, I am very excited! 😃🌷
Cool, I got the regular hubrichtii and can't wait for it to get more mature.
I need to get one in my garden!
I love my Arkansas blue 💙 ⭐ Star. Im growing mine in SW Michigan.. the foliage reminds me of soft feathers... I always run in through my fingers ..
I need to add some hubrictii to my garden!
What a nice plant, love that it is a native, and is beautiful thru the seasons. I’m in central NJ…this is a bit off topic but I remember last year Samantha picked your lillies to bring inside 😱 I love lillies and have quite a few, Oriental and Asiatic. This year for the first time they were heavily attacked and devoured by the pretty red but horrible Lilly beetle, gross things….did you have any problems with them? I hope you never get them 🤬 🌿 Thanks for the information on the Amsonia!
We didn’t plant any more lilies but they have been attacking my roses :-(
@@plantvibrations huh they have not been on mine yay But the lantern fly babies on the roses and willow tree have been just awful 🤬
I have Amsonia Starstruck. Is there anyway of dividing Amsonias? Thanks for the wonderful video.
yep you can do so in the fall. cut the top growth back, dig it up and divide the clump
@@plantvibrations wow thanks so much.
I love the way this looks! I'm in the middle of Minnesota, 3-4 zone. Will it be too cold for this to thrive here? I really like the tall one!
Ahhh I think they’re only Hardy to zone 5 :(
I have this plant and it does not grow vigorously maybe due to clay soil, had it since 2021 and last year was the first time it bloomed. I would like for it to spread to look a bit fuller. I have never pruned it but maybe this fall I will cut it back, thanks for the information.
Hmm is it in enough sunlight? Sometimes they may take a few years to get established
Hi, been watching your blogs for awhile and finally subscribed. Your plants are so healthy. My question is irrelevant to this video. I would like to ask what is the best fertilizer for Hoya’s If you don’t mind helping me, they are thriving but no flower 🌺. Please help. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for subscribing! From my experience it is t fert that encourages them to bloom. It is primarily due to age of plant and providing dry conditions
@@plantvibrations Is there a specific fert for Hoya to bloom. What brand? I have 2 year old Hoyas.
We have one of those plants in our yard and they produce a long seed pod can you take the seeds from there and grow some?
Yes you can
I have found Asclepius to be a bit invasive. I keep pulling it out and it keeps coming back everywhere.does Amsonia spread like that too?
Amsonia hubrictii can def be thuggish and take over the space
Devin, I planted amsonia hubrichtii this spring- as I too love this plant. It appears healthy, but doesn't seem to have put on any significant growth this year- in spite of watering it and providing it a spot that satisfies the growing requirements. Are they a perennial that tends to follow that "year one sleeps" rule for perennials... ie: are they slow to establish?
Absolutely. By 2025 they’ll truly be looking as handsome as you’d expect
@@plantvibrations Oh good! Devin, thank you for the information- ever since I saw Amsonia at the Bronx botanical garden- I've been wanting one- i guess I just have to be a bit more patient.
