Me too! I was so frustrated with the rabbits, that I admit it was extreme to dig out those shrubs. So happy one of the heaths said “I’m not leaving!” 💜🐰
great video Laura!! you're 100% right in my book... plants need to love you back! otherwise it's just grunt work and that's no fun. I appreciate you redoing the segment even though you forgot to press record ..sounds like something I would do! 🤭
Thanks so much! ❤️😊 It is crazy to think I had the Astilbe since 2014 - that’s a long time for a one-sided garden relationship! 🤣 Grunt work is a perfect description. Forgetting to press record - I can’t describe how I just stood there dumbfounded! 🫣🙂
Laura, greetings again from Rochester, NY. I too love astible. I have some planted in the ground and in planters. Mine performs best with filtered morning sun / partial sun. But I also have some I have in planters, which are located in a part shade area. The Asible I have planted in a planter has continued to perform extremely well- i leave the planter outside year round and fertilize once in the spring. Perhaps you have a shady location you could place the Astible in a planter- all the best!
Thanks for the suggestion of growing Astilbe in a planter, and sharing how yours grow best. 🩷 I might need to try another variety because my Peach Blossom flowers never lasted very long - but they were so pretty! I love this suggestion so I’ll keep it in mind. 👍
Thanks so much Briana! And happy to make you laugh like I did. 🤣😂 Last year, just behind where I was standing, a robin pooped on my back while I was planting. I need to wear a protective suit in that area! 😀
@Lisa F - And he was 100% asking me sincerely about that “weed” too! I had to show him the photos of the small Spring flowers and promised someday it will resemble a shrub! 😂 🙏
@@GardenSanity Definitely! I have to add 🦝 and cicada killer wasp to the list this year. I even have a little salamander charging like a crocodile if I get too close to ‘his house’. Gotta walk out to the garden and ask ‘Ok, who wants to mess with me today!?’ Bet you could write a great children’s book on all this 😆
@Lisa F Almost spit out my tea laughing, Lisa! "Who wants to mess with me today?" 😂 That salamander sounds feisty! My version of a children's book for animals would be that all the wildlife is sweet and nice and just kind of hang out to add to the sweetness of the garden scene. At least that's what I believed would happen when I was a kid and loved seeing the occasional rabbit around my parent's gardens. I never understood why they couldn't stand them. (And I still have a love-hate feeling toward the rabbits too...)
Again, beautiful plants, Laura! Having gardened for decades, you introduced me to Geum. I planted three tangerines earlier this summer that I also purchased from White Flower Farm, a favorite of mine. Hoping they'll bloom again now that it's cooled off here in North Atlanta, Zone 7B. I'll be looking for Tempo Rose in the spring. Also, I like that you give your plants the room they need! Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks so much! ❤️ I love White Flower Farm too, and didn’t want anyone dismayed by the smaller pot sizes. Yes, I’m looking forward to more orange flowers too! I’m glad you agree with giving plants room, otherwise we just end up digging them back up and dividing or moving elsewhere. Happy that your weather has cooled off too! 😀
Laura, I always laugh at ur personality and u always make me smile. 😊 I wish I could say something good about PW, but I had a bad experience with them earlier this year. I ordered two rose of sharons from PW online, and planted them on the south side of my house in full sun about 10 ft apart. They both got the same amt of sun and water, but one thrived and one died. I documented from when I unboxed the plants to when they were planted and then as one thrived and one died. I contacted PW and their customer service left a lot to be desired so I’ve been put off PW ever since. So many ppl think PW r just wonderful, but unfortunately I do not. I was going to order two astilbes from Bluestone Perrenials next spring and plant them in planters on my back patio which is shaded most of the day and gets a little bit of morning sun from the east, but I live in the desert heat of west Tx (zone 8a) and now I’m rethinking that decision bc we r so hot here. Tyfs ur experience with it! I def want to plant things that will love me back!! ❤️
Glad I can make you smile, Lori -- and thanks for your feedback! I'm sorry you didn't have a good experience with PW, and it sounds like you did everything right with your Rose of Sharons in your garden. Can you email me privately (petscribbles@gmail.com) as I'd like to learn more about what happened. As for the astilbes...I'm wondering as well if the Texas heat might be too hot. I've heard of gardeners growing it in Texas in various gardening forums over the years, however it seems like they never quite thrived for anyone in Texas. Zone 8 is the end of their hardiness zone. I'm in zone 7 and they obviously didn't do great for me. Astilbes aren't drought-tolerant either. I'd try something else if I were you -- but that's just my own personal opinion of course! 👍
Oh my goodness that Amsonia is beautiful, Laura! I'm beginning to feel the same about my Astilbe as you. One with dark red foliage is the worst! It barely blooms and hates any sun and needs watered daily! I never see Hellebores ANYWHERE! Thanks for all you do to teach us through knowledge and you're own trials! 💚
Totally agree! I had 3 astilbe on life support for 2 years until they settled in. They like being tucked in against the foundation where their roots stay cool. I have 5 different varieties clustered together so the show lasts a good month. I had to call all my local nurseries in the spring just to find one with Hellebores.
@Truth of the matter - I feel like I gave the Astilbe more than enough time to warm up to me, since 2014! 😂 Moved them and talked very nicely to them too. 😆 As for Hellebores - I’m still surprised to have found them in nurseries - and I called around to find the Shooting Stars. “Please hold them!” as we drove 30 minutes south to buy them! 🙂 I always see them sold online - Bluestone Perennials has a great selection, as does White Flower Farm. “Pink Frost” is another variety I want to get. 🌸
@Will Aerley - You did the smart thing to plant different Astilbe varieties together for a longer bloom time - which now I completely understand why it’s suggested to do this. How are your Pink Frost Hellebores? I still want some!
@Will Aerley Totally normal for Pink Frost. In the Summer, Hellebores are just evergreen plants, and same into Fall. You’ll clip the leaves off (which can look ratty) once you see the buds opening into flowers in Winter or early Spring - depending upon the weather, etc. 👍
First thing’s first: you look lovely and I love the colors of the dress on you. I love the video but stop being my enabler!!! You know I have CHAD ( Compulsive Horticultural Acquisition Disorder) and there you go showing those gorgeous plants! Shame on you 😂😂😂😂😂! I love them. I have the storm cloud amsonia and it truly is gorgeous! Thank you for always talking about how to care for these plants because it is so important and I totally agree that astilbe needs part shade. This was year 3 for mine and they bloomed so beautifully and made me proud! Looking forward to the next video!!! 🌸🌸🌸🌸
Oh geez, I didn't know CHAD was a thing. I have it too, I think. 🤣 I can't wait for my Storm Cloud Amsonia to become larger so I can fully appreciate it in the different seasons. And congrats on your Astilbe! You see? That's one plant that grows better in your climate than mine! ❤
@@GardenSanity your storm cloud amsonia will be gorgeous you’ll see!! Also I have a feeling there are many more peeps than just you and I with CHAD 😂😂😂.
I planted the storm cloud Amsonia this summer. Unfortunately zone 6 Greater KC area had a horrible summer. First non-stop rain followed by unbelievable heat and no rain. I lost a lot of new plants this summer. Ca-ching!!! But I did not lose the amsonia. It didn't grow much but it appeared to be a healthy and happy little guy. Currently covered due it being 25 last night!!! Back to normal mid 40s nights tomorrow. I have great hopes for it next year.
@Carla Radke This Summer was indeed brutal on our gardens. 🥵 And now you have cold temperatures already! 🥶 Glad your Amsonia did well. Wait until you see the flowers on it in the Spring next year! My plants are still small, but just seeing a few flowers - giving me an idea of what this plant will eventually look like - was truly wonderful! 😊💙
I live in Zone 6a. Orange County NY about 45 minutes from NYC. I have Astilbe plants and see they don’t bloom for that long either. The blooms last maybe two weeks. They turn brown and ugly and I chop them off. I watch grader’s with them blooming till fall. Maybe it’s just where I live. I am about to rip them out too.
Isn’t it frustrating?? I really wish it wasn’t the case, as I said they are so pretty while in bloom, but way too short blooming period to take up space in my garden. I wouldn’t mind if the leaves stayed a nice deep green color, but they don’t - at least for me. I’m sorry you’re experiencing the same thing, but at least we aren’t alone in this! 🙂🌸
Hi Laura, I would love to know how your Beyond Pink’d are doing and how much sun and shade they receive! I love pink, purple and white all year-round! I’ve seen fall photos of pinks and purple, and it is so beautiful!
I wish I had a better report, but Beyond Pink'd did not survive the Winter for me - twice. The one I planted in this video didn't survive. And then I purchased another one to try again in a different spot, and that also didn't survive the Winter. Each time we had freezing temperatures which I think factored in moreso than any snow we received which was minimal. It is such a beautiful shrub, but surprisingly it failed in my climate. They are supposed to be hardy in Zone 7, but I've heard from other gardeners in Zone 7 with similar stories, unfortunately.
@@SMElder-iy6fl Thanks for the suggestion! 👍I could try that, but usually it's best to plant containers with perennials and shrubs that are at least 2 hardiness zones colder than your own zone. So for example, a container plant hardy down to Zone 5 would be perfect for me here in Zone 7. But Beyond Pink'd is now listed only hardy down to Zone 7B, even though I'm technically Zone 7B so I'd have to baby it and protect it. That's wonderful that your blue caryopteris does well in your garage! 💙Most varieties are hardy down to Zone 5, which is no doubt part of the reason it nicely comes back for you each year too. That's interesting that your Canna Lilies spread like crazy, but at least you get more plants by dividing! I haven't yet grown elephant ears, but I'm always amazed at how large the bulbs are -- some look like bowling balls. Sounds like you've got a long growing season like we do here in southern NJ.
