Id rather look at this than a plain lawn any day!! What an amazing transformation. Just a different style but totally beautiful. I'm sure pollinators are loving it. Kudos to this couple we need more people like them using native plants like this. Thanks for sharing Janey 😊🌻
Absolutely! This is what I’m working toward in my parents garden. I’ve always loved the “natural” kind of look and they’re getting too old to care for their space now. But they have wild flowers galore. Just a few mulched areas that have a more formal feel
Janey, I am so stoked that you're featuring native, waterwise plants, gardens, and thoughtful gardeners. So many of us live in suburban lawn deserts that are devoid of biodiversity and frankly, personality. It's nice to see that there are alternatives to show there's another way! Thank you!
Thank you to these homeowners for taking the time to share their knowledge and their garden! As we can all imagine, sharing this labor of love must come with a feeling of vulnerability. I hope as gardeners we can all appreciate that and appreciate the beauty they’ve developed on their property!
THANK you for sharing this beautiful garden! Natives are key to supporting native bees and birds. Please include more content like this. People need to know how important this is.
I have to be honest, when I first saw their yard from afar, I thought "oh wow, it kinda just looks like they let weeds overtake their yard" but as I watched each plant up close, they are all SO beautiful! SO incredibly unique and absolute beautiful plants! I am in shock that people don't grow more of these plants! Thank you Janey for opening my eyes to this ❤
Totally, here in Amarillo Texas I don’t know if the laws work the same where your at, but we get fined for it being overgrown even though it’s the city’s property, I’m just gonna do what I want with it since I’m getting fined for it.
I think this is awesome! Education is key and people need to realize that we have to stop fighting against nature. Americans have been trained to see beauty in a way that is not natural. We need people to keep showcasing natural habitat so that it becomes more common place. Keep up the great work!!
Beautiful! I love how he gave (and you, Janie, inserted onscreen,) both the botanical and common name of the plants. Looking forward to more tours. You're a natural tourguide!
You knocked it out of the park with this tour--so much valuable info on natives. I especially like the idea of planting natives that bloom in summer too. You have a fantastic channel with something for everyone, so thanks for this inspiration, I'm bookmarking this one!
Janey, this was a fantastic tour! Even though I live in a totally different climate, I enjoyed learning about so many plants native to California and I just loved the look of their gardens. Nick and Sandy's enthusiasm was contagious as was yours - thank you for sharing this and encouraging people to think about their gardens in more climate friendly ways that still retain beauty and interest.❤
This was awesome to see! Thank you Janey, love the use of all the native plants. Can’t wait for more garden tours on Sunday! Yay! We all need some nerds who plant beautiful gardens! Thanks Nick and Sandy 🌻💐🌺🌼.
Wow that was amazing. I love plant Nerds. Something about how grass moves in the wind. I love all grasses. How exciting a Sunday Video. Have a great day. ❤
I'm from Michigan and I completely enjoyed this video! Their native garden is so amazing!! I love the enthusiasm that they have for what they've created! GREAT video, thank you Janey!!
I love the use of natives, grasses and and more natural flow- Piet Oudolf’s gardens have always been the most inspiring to me. I think it’s great people are allowed to express themselves in their gardens in ways that use less water, less pesticides and herbicides. I love the backyard! It makes me want to walk through it.
Thank you Janey for this video. I wish more garden influencers shown something outside the box, something more than just large nursery/growers products. I think your channel really stands out because of that. I enjoyed seeing West Coast native plants because I am in the East and we have completely different natives here. I always wanted to see what is growing West. 🙂
I have been gradually adding natives to my water wise front yard. I love that you're featuring this. It's so important and cool and smart. I really do hope people get inspiration from this.
Janey - this is one of the best, if not the best, CA native garden videos I’ve ever seen. I’ve been developing a native garden for a few years and I’m always looking at CNPS videos and whatever else I can find on UA-cam and there isn’t much, especially this quality. I so appreciate you putting the common and scientific name of each plant referenced on screen. And it’s great to hear real experts talking about them. This is a very natural looking native garden (most are). I’m hoping to design mine as a little bit more manicured and “landscaped.” I think it can be done. The soil and sun factor makes a huge difference. I have several of the same plants in the ground at my house for two + years and they are just one or two feet tall. 😂 Also, thanks to your video yesterday, I learned about this and was able to visit 4 of the gardens on the East end of the tour and they were absolutely fabulous. You are a pro!!
Freaking awesome couple and garden! I am going to investigate native gardening in my state of North Carolina! Thank you so much for taking us on this tour!
I love seeing this garden! I don't live in California but it's still so fun to see! I also super love seeing their rock garden, because I love crevice gardens and have created a similar one in my garden where I had a little spot right by my steps that needed something, and that something was a crevice garden! So fun.
I am planning a native “forest/grassland” area in my backyard. I love that they created “Fig’s Meadow”! Our dogs are going to love it. Thank you for celebrating this garden and the experts(nerds😁), that created it!
I’m obsessed!!! We are in Southern California and recently transformed our yard with a native garden. We LOVEEEE the color all year round and less maintenance. I still plant a cut garden in garden beds and have my non-native container pots. Best of both worlds 🎉❤🎉 Thank you for sharing Janey. I’m so impressed.
This garden tour was a delight! I love the whole nerdiness of your guests! Janey: you need to install a gray water system! Especially since you are concerned about how much water you have available from your well. 😊 AND you need to find a spot in your yard to install a California native garden!!! 🧑🌾
Northwest Michigan, I’ve been adding some natives to my gardens and have found some lovely plant varieties that are not standard fare. Great to learn about so many of these, although probably not native to my area. Knowledge is power!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for featuring this wonderful garden and talking about native plants. These are the plants that support the creatures that balance the food chain for our (human) species. I live in a neighborhood with strong HOA restrictions so I have limited natives in the front yard but predominantly native plants in the back. #DougTallamy
So this has inspired me to create my own meadow of indiana native flowers/grasses!! Awesome job & i love Fig’s appearance🥰 I am SO Pumped for these sunday garden tours Janey!!! 😜
I agree. I’m more of a structured garden with planned messiness kind of gal. 😂 this was very interesting however and some of those plants are beautiful!
I think using natives is a great idea however that front yard is a bit too over grown for a neighborhood setting. I planted a native garden in my backyard after taking a college course that covered Ca. natives. I eventually decided that I wanted to see more color and after Borage took over my yard. I came to realize like so many that the cottage look is my thing. Looking forward to the Sunday landscapes.
Definitely will be looking into native plants for my area. I have some already planted but I am sure there are so many more. I’ve screen shot some of the ones you featured to see if the will grow in my area too since we have similar climates. Hugs fr9m Texas!
Thank you Sandy, Nick and Janey. So many beautiful plants. 🌱 They thrive and support wildlife, win win! 🌱Instead of another boxwood we could try tucking in a native. 🌱I’m incorporating veggies, flowers and herbs in pots raised beds etc… for biodiversity. same concept
I live in PA so our natives look different than CA but I love seeing how natives can be incorporated into our gardens and different ways to remove turf! Great video!
My new favorite video from. I try to incorporate as many native California plants as possible…this video is so informative, and I’ll be returning to it for reference. Excellent job, Janey.
Wow, just fascinating! Big thank to Nick and Sandy …. Such knowledge and passion….I just love it! Can’t wait to see you meadow Janey….monty will love it ❤️❤️❤️
This was the funnest garden tour ever, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing what these two creatives have achieved and created in their own patch! I’m a huge fan of native gardens anyway, and in particular habitats that encourage the wildlife in, are my jam. Imagine having an opportunity to glean such invaluable knowledge from an amazingly talented couple like Nick and Sandy?! They’re a dream team. Thank you all for sharing this incredible garden with us. It is such an inspiration. 🙏🙌
Love this video! This couple's enthusiasm and knowledge is so inspiring! I'm taking notes for my Southern California yard. Can't wait to see more of these tours.
Wow, this was such a fantastic garden tour! Thank you for ALL of the information, and sharing these beautiful California plants. I've made notes, taken screen shots and now I have a starting place! I can't wait to check out CNPS and Cal Scape!! Thanks again for this amazing tour!
What a beautiful garden! They are so knowledgeable and this was a fantastic video. I wish this would become more mainstream. I'm fascinated by their grey water swale!
Ugh, finally someone who realizes we don’t need to waste our green water! Only toilet water needs to go into the sewage! My dad did that on our property and I have continued to do it! All the bath water, laundry, and sink water needs to go 8n to the years to help you land and trees as well as plant, to sustain themselves in the heat drought of the summer! Thank you for showing this! Hugs from Texas!
I think what throws a lot of people off about planting native gardens is they think it looks messy. Because a lot of native gardeners kinda have nature in mind and nature is kinda messy! But the reality is, you can make a formal clean garden with natives as well. The options are only limited to your imagination.
I love it! I’ve had recommendations to avoid our backyard being taken over by weeds to do the meadow grasses and it’s lovely! I’d love to have this all over the backyard. I just adore the hawk moths! They love our red valerian! (As do the butterflies) we enjoy seeing them at dusk on a hot 100 degree summer evening 😊
Dear Janie and Jason, thanks for allll the information you provide! I just watched this for the first time and it was soooo good I humbly suggest that you rewatch it …. just in time for fall planting 🌼🌼 maybe along the roadside? This garden certainly inspired me for this fall.
Loved the tour Thank you Nick, Sandy and Janey for sharing this. Now we know how nice native plants can fill our yards.cant wait for the next tour Janey.
Loved this video and the many many eye opening suggestions for trouble spots in our yards, whether it's dry, wet, high, low challenges we face. My first glimpse of the front garden left me with chest pain from the chaos, my OCD kicked in and I wanted to see space between each variety of plant, but as they began to move through the garden and point out all the different varieties and why they chose them my heart rate went down a bit LOL. The back garden was a complete oasis of calm and green and the little rock garden is a little world of beauty we can all replicate in our own yards. What a great way to spend some Sunday morning time, being inspired by these very hard working gardeners! Thanks Janey, can't wait for next Sunday! P.S. After years of mowing grass we said goodbye to our last lawn in 1999 and it was the best decision ever.
Nick and Sandy have possibly changed my mind !! Love love love them and their home (and their dog) Even took notes . The rock garden is a great idea that hopefully will work for me in a difficult area (zone 9b , central coast) . Thank you for this amazing tour 💜💜🌸🌸
I love the use of heights and layers! The blue bush lupine is beautiful! I thought it was a buddleja at first. The black and white monkey flower is unique. I had never even heard of monkey flower until Janey did a tour last year. The grasses are beautiful too! I don't have any in my garden but I'm considering one or 3 after seeing this garden.
Very enjoyable to watch your gardens evolve! The unusual plants will be fun to watch grow and will add a nice dimension. It all looks great! A lot of work but nothing more rewarding!
What a lovely couple and their garden. I've always loved a rock garden, never made one tho. Janey, those heat loving plants would be nice across your front, they'd love being near the rd. Thank you for sharing, and Thank you Nick and Sandy.
2023 I made my first garden using both flowers and vegetables…. It was also the very first time I had ever seen and was visited by a Hawk Moth! I had to ask people what in the world they were 😂 I was lucky to see them again throughout the season. ( in my zone 6a6b 30 mins south of Columbus they were attracted to my ‘Proven Winners superbena sparkling amethyst’ 💜
Hi Janey 🌺.This garden looks so pretty with these native plants and it full of beautiful colors .I have two color from pretty Lewisia in container , the deep pink and peachy orange its flowers attract attention and I will get more plants from it and I love how he planted the Lewisia between the stones . . Have a wonderful day . 🌺🌻🌺
I found this totally fascinating.I'm in the UK zone 8 but this couldn't be more different to my climate if it tried. At the moment we are drowning in rain and have been for months! When you see them close up some of those plants are gorgeous. That little blue one near then end of the video (sorry can't remember what Nick called it) is particularly pretty. I doubt I'd ever be able to grow any of them, except maybe the bamboo!!!
Hi Janey Love the Sunday Garden Tours! I can tell this is going to be a regular part of my Sunday Morning coffee time. The native plant garden is amazing and the couple is a wealth of knowledge! Just added to my to do list to learn more about native plants! Your front ‘flower field’ would be a great area for natives whether to do all or a section.
Janey, thanks so much for highlighting native gardens on your channel!! And Nick and Sandy, wow! So cool to tour your spectacular garden! Diplacus pictus!?🤩Thanks for making it look good! Kill your lawn! 🤘
I’m just west of you all in Lakeport, CA. Thank you for some awesome native plant ideas and design ideas. We too, are on the third year at our home and boy do I have my work cut out for me. I’m a half block from a giant lake (Clearlake) and wildlife habitat which brings all kinds of birds (and weed seeds) over my yard. That part is a battle, along with the VERY clay “soil” that I’m working with. I did invest in an auger to make my life easier for a while after thinking I could dig a hole to plant a fruit tree 😂. I’m thinking next year may be my year of propagation to see if I can get some more plants in the ground…on a budget 😅. Gardens like yours are my favorite to see during drive-bys. A wonderful secret garden that isn’t a secret ❤. I do like to drive around to see what’s growing in nature, on hillsides, etc. gets very hot here in the summer too. Anyhow, I’m rambling. I learned a lot in this video. Thank you for taking the time!
I'm totally into this! So many rare plants! I'm a little surprised they didn't use any native shrubs aside from the sage. I suppose they didn't want to block the view to the street and are waiting for the oak to size up? Or maybe everything is from seed? If so, bravo!
I love this! I'm trying to grow many of these plants. My climate is a little hotter than your area and it's pretty hard to figure out how to properly water these plants when getting them established. A lot of information on California natives are from coastal areas which is so much milder than the central valley. I would just love it if you were to dedicate a corner of your property to natives. Thank you for this tour!
Id rather look at this than a plain lawn any day!! What an amazing transformation. Just a different style but totally beautiful. I'm sure pollinators are loving it. Kudos to this couple we need more people like them using native plants like this. Thanks for sharing Janey 😊🌻
Couldn’t agree more. 😊

Perfectly worded. I appreciate learning from all gardeners and opening my eyes to a style I was not aware of.
Native plants would be great for the area outside the fence by the road.
Totally, here in Amarillo Texas I don’t know if the laws work the same where your at, but we get fined for it being overgrown even though it’s the city’s property, I’m just gonna do what I want with it since I’m getting fined for it.

“I only know the scientific name”! Heck , most of us barely know the common! Great nerdy people! Very inspiring
I know they appreciate someone who understands their garden and doesn't complain that it isn't round or square or flat!
Although it’s not my cup of tea, I can admire the flowers and hard work they’ve invested.
Janey, this was a fantastic tour! Even though I live in a totally different climate, I enjoyed learning about so many plants native to California and I just loved the look of their gardens. Fascinating Californian native plants/flowers. Thank you
This is awesome! I would LOVE future updates of this garden through the seasons. Especially during the dry season ❤

I think it’s great people are allowed to express themselves in their gardens in ways that use less water, less pesticides and herbicides. I love the backyard! It makes me want to walk through it.
The Waterwise Garden Tour in Sonoma county this year was FABULOUS! More native garden tours are needed!❤
I wish every state would have a resource like Cal scape. It’s a fantastic idea.
I found it for Cape Cod, MA after he explained it!
Lovely garden. Native species do so well. It's a wonder people don't plant more of them.
Thank you Janey for this video. I wish more garden influencers shown something outside the box, something more than just large nursery/growers products. I think your channel really stands out because of that. I enjoyed seeing West Coast native plants because I am in the East and we have completely different natives here. I’m a native plant person in Southern Missouri so it’s so so interesting to me to see California natives , thank you ❤
I think it looks wonderful. Whimsical and wild is a nice change to see. I truly enjoy all types of gardens and it's refreshing to see such an array!
I have been gradually adding natives to my water wise front yard. I love that you're featuring this. It's so important and cool and smart. I really do hope people get inspiration from this.

Freaking awesome couple and garden! I am going to investigate native gardening in my state of North Carolina! Thank you so much for taking us on this tour!
Such an awesome example of microcosoms of the native plant world. I lovep meeting fellow plant needs, and these are professional plant nerds!
How fun were these two to watch?!?! Love their passion! What a beautiful garden!
Thank you for planting natives and thank you for sharing! 💚
I love seeing this garden! I don't live in California but it's still so fun to see!
Love this! Anyone can incorporate natives in their gardens. Thanks for sharing! 🌱🌞
These two people are so knowledgeable. I enjoyed learning from them! This video was so fun to watch.

Me too! HOA’s really need to educate themselves & change their old thinking & ways.
So this has inspired me to create my own meadow of indiana native flowers/grasses!! Awesome job & i love Fig’s appearance🥰
I am SO Pumped for these sunday garden tours Janey!!! 😜
It’s not my style a little to messy looking, but I will implement some of these in my garden. Thank you for the tour.
I agree. I’m more of a structured garden with planned messiness kind of gal. 😂 this was very interesting however and some of those plants are beautiful!
I agree . The front yard is quite messy looking , but I love their back yard.
Front yard a little too much for me
Same. I've been adding natives into my garden but I prefer to keep it somewhat structured with a hint of whimsy here and there.
I think using natives is a great idea however that front yard is a bit too over grown for a neighborhood setting. I planted a native garden in my backyard after taking a college course that covered Ca. natives. I eventually decided that I wanted to see more color and after Borage took over my yard. Stunning project. More of this in our reality.

Just down the street from my house! Lots and lots of front yards moving in this direction. The birds 🐦 and insects 🐞 must be celebrating! 🎉
Love this garden. Absolutely stunning!! A very informative and insightful garden tour. Thanks so much for sharing.

Love this video! This couple's enthusiasm and knowledge is so inspiring! I'm taking notes for my Southern California yard. Can't wait to see more of these tours.
There were many many plants in that garden that I would love to try in mine. Love the passion of these people.
Wow, this was such a fantastic garden tour! Thank you for ALL of the information, and sharing these beautiful California plants. I've made notes, taken screen shots and now I have a starting place! I can't wait to check out CNPS and Cal Scape!! Thanks again for this amazing tour!
I’ve never seen a native garden, I appreciate the goal behind it which makes even more interesting and exciting.
When I saw the crepe Myrtle in the back yard, I gasped! Wow is that beautiful!
Fabulous! Thank you for sharing this awesome garden! Love to hear botanists and horticulturists talk 🥰
Janey, you could so incorporate a crevice-rock garden into your berm in front of the house… definitely into areas of the dry creek bed ….
Native gardens are a little chaotic. I love their backyard meadow.wonder if it stays green all year.
damn that black rock in the backyard actually looks like asphalt, I love the look of it.
Thank you for showing off California's beautiful diverse natives!
Dear Janie and Jason, thanks for allll the information you provide! I just watched this for the first time and it was soooo good I humbly suggest that you rewatch it …. just in time for fall planting 🌼🌼 maybe along the roadside? This garden certainly inspired me for this fall.
Beautiful native garden and the inspiration is endless. Thank you Nick, Sandy and Fig for inviting us into your home great advice start small.
This is amazing. Such great information. So much better than grass!❤
I'm in Florida and we have a Native Plant Society too!! I'm a member
One of my favorite tours that you’ve done! I’m inspired to plant some native grasses now for my dogs and that rock garden was amazing
I love this garden! I tend to sway more to the cottage garden esthetic. Natives are the way to go. I’m trying to do this in my Florida garden.
What a treat! Thank you!!
Love those native plants. So many blooms and varieties. Love this video. Thanks for showing us.
Magnificent! This is as close to God in nature as we can expect.
What a lovely couple and their garden. I've always loved a rock garden, never made one tho. Janey, those heat loving plants would be nice across your front, they'd love being near the rd. Thank you for sharing, and Thank you Nick and Sandy.
Outstanding, Beautiful can’t wait for more California natural information
2023 I made my first garden using both flowers and vegetables….
It was also the very first time I had ever seen and was visited by a Hawk Moth! I had to ask people what in the world they were 😂 I was lucky to see them again throughout the season. ( in my zone 6a6b 30 mins south of Columbus they were attracted to my ‘Proven Winners superbena sparkling amethyst’ 💜
Very interesting, you show your knowledge and skills greatly. Thanks for sharing.
Even though I would not want my neighbors planting such a garden next to me, I loved listening to all the knowledge they shared.
I have to admit that I thought about the bamboo creeping under the fence to the neighbors yard. 😬
Really enjoyed this informative tour on natives. I live in Va Beach Va and grow blue eyed grass and poppies from fall sowing
These people are so interesting!
Ah and then bamboo would take over the world 😂
Hi Janey
Love the Sunday Garden Tours!
Amazing progress in such a relatively short time🎉
Thanks for showing us this beautiful native yard! There are a few native yards around my house and they are the neighborhood stars right now.
Question: How do they control the invasive nature of bamboo? So many interesting natives. We should all consider a section of our yard to them.
This is such an interesting video! I love the native plants and how they interact with the environment. ❤
This is so interesting. ❤. Thank you guys.
That was very interesting. There is some really beautiful plants in their garden
