Lyrics Last night I lay asleeping There came a dream so fair I stood in old Jerusalem Beside the Temple there I heard the children singing And ever as they sang Me thought the voice of Angels From Heaven' in answer rang Me thought the voice of Angels From Heav'n in answer rang Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Lift up you gates and sing Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna to your King! And then me thought my dream was chang'd The streets no longer rang Hush'd were the glad Hosannas The little children sang The sun grew dark with mystery The morn was cold and chill As the shadow of a cross arose Upon a lonely hill As the shadow of a cross arose Upon a lonely hill Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Hark! How the Angels sing Hosanna in the Highest! Hosanna to your King! Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Sing for the night o'er Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna for evermore! Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna for evermore! Songwriters: Stephen Adams / Len Johnson
On this day in the year 2000, legendary Tipperary tenor Frank Patterson passed away. He was 61 years old. Patterson performed for Pope John Paul II twice during his career. The first was at the Phoenix Park in 1979 in front of 1.3 million people and the second occasion was in St Patrick’s Cathedral in New York in 1996. He described the event in Phoenix Park as the highlight of his career and he wore the below suit for the performance. The suit was very kindly loaned to the Museum by the Patterson family and it is one of our most cherished artefacts. Frank Patterson recorded 36 albums in six languages, including opera, oratorio and songs by Purcell, Handel, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert and Berlioz. He won platinum, gold and silver discs and two of his American releases were million-dollar sellers. Patterson also performed for US Presidents Reagan and Clinton. The New Yorker magazine wrote of one of Patterson’s performances: "The whole world seems still while he sings, and for a few seconds after." In its obituary following Patterson’s death in 2000, the Irish Times wrote “he attained the pinnacle of his profession. He was an outstanding Irish tenor of his generation with artistry in oratorio, in classical song and in the Irish and international repertoire.” Source: Site of Tipperary Museum of Hidden history

A superlative rendition..A week ago I heard " The Holy City " at..Andre Rieu's concert in Dublin..and have since listened to versions by various artists...As favourites, I'd chosen versions by ..Harry Secombe....then..Josef Locke..until I discovered..Frank Patterson's recording tonight...Tipperary and Ireland. .Be Very Proud...!!!!
A lovely tenor. Remember him in Dublin at the concert hall in the late 60s. I think he was slightly deaf in his right ear. He put his hand near this ear to hear himself and made a lovely sound. He was married to Eily O'Grady, who was a foremost Irish pianist
What a magnificent voice that God endowed to Frank Patterson! I have an hour long DVD if him. I am blessed Everytime I view it. It imagine Mr. Patterson is now singing praises to the wonderful Lord.
When I was a little boy this song would be played at church with a piano and organ and some one would sing it. More than 50 years later I still remember it. Frank can sing this song like no other tenor. Mahalia Jackson is another singer who does this song justice. Amen

Last night I lay asleeping
There came a dream so fair
I stood in old Jerusalem
Beside the Temple there
I heard the children singing
And ever as they sang
Me thought the voice of Angels
From Heaven' in answer rang
Me thought the voice of Angels
From Heav'n in answer rang
Jerusalem! Jerusalem!
Lift up you gates and sing
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna to your King!
And then me thought my dream was chang'd
The streets no longer rang
Hush'd were the glad Hosannas
The little children sang
The sun grew dark with mystery
The morn was cold and chill
As the shadow of a cross arose
Upon a lonely hill
As the shadow of a cross arose
Upon a lonely hill
Jerusalem! Jerusalem!
Hark! How the Angels sing
Hosanna in the Highest!
Hosanna to your King!
Jerusalem! Jerusalem!
Sing for the night o'er
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna for evermore!
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna for evermore!
