- Recorded in April 1929. Other popular 1929 versions were by Gene Austin and George Olsen and his orchestra. The Four Aces had a hit with a remake in 1952. Written by James Dyrenforth and Carroll Gibbons. B-side is "Lover Come Back to Me".
Beautiful.
Impeccable diction, breathing and phrasing.
LYRICS:
I recall a bright summer day
When you and I had strolled away
And suddenly a storm grew nigh
Seeking shelter from the rain
We hurried down a little lane
Found a lovely spot nearby
'Twas just a garden in the rain
Close to a little leafy lane
A touch of color 'neath skies of gray
The raindrops kissed the flower beds
The blossoms raised their thirsty heads
A perfumed "Thank you" they seemed to say
Surely here was charm beyond compare - to view
Maybe it was just that I was there - with you
'Twas just a garden in the rain
But then the sun came out again
And sent us happily on our way
Surely here was charm beyond compare - to view
Maybe it was just that I was there - with you'Twas just a garden in the rain
But then that sun came out again
And sent us happily on our way
Beautiful - thank you.
A perfect example of how McCormack was without doubt the master of crossover.
in any age or time a Master is a MASTER
I've noticed that when modern opera stars condescend to sing a "pop" song, they never let you forget for an instant they they sing opera. McCormack had the taste to sing pop songs more or less like a contemporary "crooner."
@hebetaylor You're welcome!
