Do you have a truck or SUV with a selector switch, dial, or button to turn on 4 wheel drive? Does it seem like nothing happens when you try to use it? In this video, Andy diagnoses and then repairs the vacuum seal in a front hub on a Ford Super Duty F-350. In this application, vacuum is used to engage the front hub splines, which locks the wheel with the front drive shaft when 4 wheel drive modes are selected. Andy walks through testing the vacuum lines for leaks, and he discovers that the problem this time is in the hub itself. He replaces the vacuum seal in the hub, and then confirms the 4 wheel drive selector is working again.

The only video on this problem that actually makes sense. Thanks.
Wow, that seal would be a headache for someone not having the proper tools!😤😂😂
Very good video! you broke down how to diagnose the problem and gave a simple solution to repairing. Thank you
Very good in depth of the job, my 1999 f30 started giving trouble, I'm to old and broken to do it myself, never stop learning
Love this real life videos diagnosis everything keep them coming Andy ! Thank you to A1
nice to see someone skilled that knows what hes doing
Thank you for the great video! I had the exact problem in my 2020 f250 and your diagnosis and repair video saved me tons of money!!! Fixed it myself thanks to some elbow grease and your vid!! Cheers!
Extremely informative. Very well done step by step video
Well done.. I have this exact issue to deal with .. def appreciate the detailed vid.
Liked how you put the socket on the hub then put ur extension thru and on the socket...I put a couple long extensions thru the knuckle hole on a crown vic to loosen the lower balljoint nut a while back....lot of people wouldnt have thot about that really....
Great step by step explanation!
One of my locking hubs quit locking so I bought a set of dorman auto lock hubs. They were defective right out of the box. So I used the one that was still working and ordered another that wasn't the Dorman brand and they work good now.
Be careful about some of the aftermarket junk out there.
Great video
Similar problems with similar truck. Thank you.
Very. Good. Video. Amigo. Happy new year stay. Safe🙏🏾
It was a great tutorial, despite everything being rusted and stuck together. I was born and raised in Detroit, another rust belt. After I finished my time in the military, I kept my ass in SoCal. I just couldn’t see myself doing the snow, ice and rust anymore. I have a 2002 Avalanche and a 2000 S10, NO RUST!! I commend you guys(So. Main Auto Repair, NY) for fighting and beating the rust. If you guys ever went to SoCal to work, you’d be ok.
Thank you for your excellent and very informative video. I now have the knowledge to diagnose this problem with my F350. If it is a problem with the hub, I will likely take it to a Ford dealer for repair.

Do you happen to have part numbers for the seals
Remeber when it was get out and lock the front hubs and you know it's in....those vacumm hubs have been replaced 4 times on my f150 . Absolute garbage
Thanks for the video.but i have a question? What about the dodge , it is the same procedure or not ?
excelente
Hi there. My dashboard had to be replaced. The old dash had the 4x4 switch. After replaced the dashboard did not have connection. In order for the 4x4 to work does it need the switch or can it work manually, by locking the 2 front wheels?
I've changed my vacuum seal 3 times in less then a year, any idea what's going on? tested for vacuum everything is fine its the driver side should I change de wheel bearing and 4x4 hub seal to or any suggestions that can help me .
No grease, there is a green sealant on the seal already. Grease will prevent the sealant from doing its job.
What are the names of the parts that you are using? I have a 2011 f350 4x4 and trying to look up the parts at 1A auto parts. I put it keys words in and nothing comes up.
This is really a good video I have watch from start to end. I really like the way you work your way to diagnose the problem. The reason I watch your video my 03 Pathfinder I left headlight on And the battery died. Crank it couple x see if will start but no. So i jump start since then the AWD stay on and the four wheel logo on dash usually rear wheel stay lit and now its gone. Is short Awd won't engage. Any idea what's the problem? Thank you.
+@ricmille10 We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
My 1999 f250 7.3 diesel auto 4wd works , but quits when it gets to a hard pull. I saw a video in which the presenter said it has slip clutches that stop it from pulling hard, to make it work better in snow to use the auto function. Could somebody tell me if that is correct, and if so, where are the slip clutches?
I have a question. I have a 2003 ford expedition xlt my 4wd high isn’t engaging nor is the light coming on the dash. But the 4wd low engages and the light comes up on the dash. What can the problem be with the 4wd high
I have this issue with my 2007 dodge ram 1500 4.7. I've replaced all actuators and fuse and still will not engage when it shows it is. I dont have locking hubs.
Can you switch that out for lock in lock out
Solution is a manual transfer case and hubs.
Wow, banging on the new plastic seals, you are a true american 😐
I have a 2006 Lincoln mark lt and it won't start it turns over all lights working everything working it just won't start can it be my starter .
I know Ford has done their 4 wheel drive like this with locking and unlocking hubs for forever but it seems unnecessary. As far as I know Chevy and Dodge don't bother making them unlocking. Is the MPG lost with fixed hubs really a big deal? Also seems like it would be OK to just leave the hubs manually locked on the Ford and forget about the auto stuff altogether. The only disadvantage is that I guess your U-joints at the hubs would wear out quicker but I would counter that exercising them would be better than letting them seize up. But what do I know haha
It' best !!
So when I’ve been trying to engage 4hi or lo I got a message that says , 4x4 shift in progress followed by a message that says shift delay pull forward then after I do that it the message goes away and it’s still not engaged . Vacuum lines and hubs are only like 3 months old. Anybody have any ideas? I’m assuming transfer car motor but I don’t want to just keep throwing parts at it if not necessary
How much would this cost at the dealer?
the hood's not ajar, I saw it, it's a hood!
👌
Just get the seal installation tool.
Any way to get the vacuum line from the top down part number??
Can you work on a 2008 Nissan versa
