Ugh yes! I went to New Orleans and was appaled at how my friend said they cooked crabs or shrimp there. He had never heard of Old Bay either, oh the humanity! I mailed him Old Bay when I got home, took him awhile but he finally admitted it was amazing.

Here in Texas we love our seafood, especially Gulf Coast shrimp. We usually use Worcestershire sauce, catsup, lemon juice, prepared horseradish and Tobasco sauce to make our cocktail sauce. I’ve never had steamed shrimp before. Sounds good though. Have to try it. We make fried shrimp and boiled shrimp though.

Im down here on the gulf and I use Whataburger spicy ketchup (you can buy it from HEB). Do your self a favor and any recipe calling for ketchup...replace with whataburger fancy ketchup or spicy ketchup. You may have to order online. Love your recipes. Saving us during the pandemic lockdowns.
These look amazing. When I lived in Baltimore we'd go to the harbor and get these and crabs and loved them however we ate them with drawn butter. I'm craving these shrimp right now. I may have to makes these very soon. Thanks so much. 😊
Great recipe, we usually boil our down here in New Orleans, but we’ll try this method for small batches. Suggestion? Take a whole head of garlic, cut in half (like you are going to roast it) and add to your onion batch at the beginning. Try that steamed .. will be sweet!
I commented before I watched the whole video. I've never used mustard seeds or peppercorns, all the spices needed are in the Old Bay and beer. Now I'd make a shrimp salad sandwich, Merry Christmas!
Hello Louise. Do you think it is possible, using the Ninja Foodi OL701, to prepare steamed Shrimp & Broccoli at the same time with Jasmine rice? I already do the shrimp with broccoli by steaming both together for 8 minutes but I don't know whether I could get the Jasmine rice to work in the Foodi under that time requirement. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks.
Yes, I think that would work just fine. You would want your rice in the bottom with enough liquid to cook the rice and produce steam for long enough. I think my steamed rice is a 7 minute cook time, so that might be too long for your shrimp and broccoli, but you should be able to add it mid way through.
If you put a cup of water in the pot and select steam and then the time, if the valve seals no steam will come out. If the valve doesn't seal, you will see steam coming out the entire time you are steaming.
If you can get them in your area, try Argentina shrimp. They’re pink when raw. That’s the only ones I buy now! Going to Charleston, SC soon, and believe it or not, fresh shrimp is not as popular as say oysters!
I live in Virginia and It literally took me 6 months to find Old Bay after the pandemic started. For some reason they said it was a shortage. I like alot of horseradish in my cocktail sauce also. Makes your nostrils flair when u eat it. Lol
Wow really?! The grocery store near me (I'm in Maryland) has an entire end cart dedicated to Old Bay. Maybe they prioritized Maryland stores to receive the shipments. The oddest items went on a shortage after the pandemic.
For true Maryland steamed shrimp use 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of vinegar and 3 heaping tablespoons of Old Bay in the liquid. Preheat the water and Old Bay and add the shrimp until they turn red. Very easy.
I was born and raised in Annapolis, Maryland & your "true" Maryland way of cooking shrimp is not any I've ever seen or heard of. What part of Maryland are you from? Your method isn't even steaming the shrimp, it's poaching them. I'm certainly not being rude here because I can see how your method would work, but to call it "true" Maryland steamed shrimp is a bit of a reach. I will try it your way though because I bet the flavor is lovely.
That's of the way they were cooked "poached" when I lived in Maryland. Cooked right in the broth with spices vinegar and onion. Essex area. I'm sure they're delicious both ways. I think the flavors most likely permeate the shrimp more with the poaching method. I will try the steaming method though.
@@TheSaltedPepper neither have i but my dad did it like 3 batches of chicken soup ago. I mean the real secret ingredient is home made broth lol, but the old bay kicks it up a notch.
How many pounds are you cooking? With a large pot and a way to elevate the shrimp above the boiling liquid, you can steam several pounds at a time, but toss them around because the ones on the bottom will cook faster.

I want to buy a Ninja Foodie and I see you have the 6.5 quart. Looking on Amazon, I see they have a bigger one, and we have a big family even though we are retired, we entertain a lot. Is your size good enough for entertaining?
The only difference is about 1.5" in height. This extra space can come in handy for larger batches of soups and larger cuts of meats, but I like the 6.5qt better because I'm short and working with the 8qt on my counter is more difficult.

I can still get one in Washington County, but they cost more. When I saw the Maryland flag, I thought you were going to do Maryland Fried Chicken. Wishful thinking.
Maryland doesn't do a whole lot of shrimp producing, I don't think. Most of it comes from the Gulf of Mexico I think. The Maryland style is the cooking technique mimicked from Maryland crabs. Now, I'm feeling silly, but what is Maryland Fried Chicken? I lived there all my life and never knew that was a thing! LOL

But Food.com claims it’s cooked in an open skillet. The Maryland Government website says it’s fried in a covered Dutch oven in the oven. I think the gravy must be the signature difference. There’s a chain of Maryland Fried Chicken restaurants in Florida. 🤔🤔🤔🤔

Hey Louise, as much cooking as you do, you really should get a freeze dryer. We bought one of these several months ago and they are awesome. You didn't devein the shrimp. Eww. Not a fan of shrimp. Won't tell you what the vein is but I recommend it in the future. I cleaned a lot of shrimp over the years in restaurants. I noticed the foodi oven behind you, do you ever use that? That is the type I like.
The shrimp weren't deveined in this video and it's not usually done with steamed shrimp. I know what the "vein" is and I do remove it before making shrimp salad or other shrimp preparations. It's easy to do even with steaming, after you remove the shells, just cut the back and remove it. I'm happy to say these shrimp didn't have much of a "vein" at all. Yes, that is the Ninja Foodi XL pro oven, it's incredible!

Why? Steaming is steaming no matter how you do it. You can do this on the stove with a steamer basket the same way.
