This is damn brilliant. As someone who films a ton of music videos, it’s actually a truly elegant solution. I’ve never thought to do it, VERY creative. It solves a ton of problems. 1. Those gimbal support rigs are insane. Annoying. And expensive. So that leaves the big ring, attached to an ez rig, or the other one with the two ropes. 2. Those rigs make every shot too low. Especially if you have a Cinematographer who’s on the shorter side. 3. This is super convenient for size as well.

@@ListenHereOldMan truthfully, the ergonomics of this rig would probably work better with an ez rig ANYway.. Just because of the top handle it self. Really brilliant solution.
They used the Tilta power supply base to eliminate the DJI handle battery and shorten the whole rig significantly and make it way more balanced on the shoulder , bolting the power base straight to the rigid V lock mounting plate, also adding the Tilta dvanced Rear Operating Control Handle for suitcase mode

Terrific video! I have a feeling that The Creator is now going to be the subject of many courses and case studies in film schools all around the world going forward for at least the next four or five years. It's changed a lot of people perception already about what is possible (and at what cost) when shooting a major film production.
from my perspective, every few years a camera is created to give average filmmakers inspiration. I remember in 2012 an block buster movie came out called ACT Of VALOR which was made on a canon 5d m2 and in 2015 the film mad max road fury, on a certain scene the use a black mage cinema 2.5k with an tokina 11-16 they used also a few original black magic pocket that was only 1080 pm at the time on a marvel Avengers: Age of Ultron and now we have the Sony e30 which did another ground breaking statement again in 2023 with the movie The Creator its a great time to be a filmmaker. this all proves you dont need to spend thousands from your retirement to buy a camera to produced quality work
Great video man. This might be a huge solution to a problem I tend to have - I do a lot of gimbal work but also need to move quickly to handheld at live events and just locking off the axis and popping it on your shoulder does all of that in a second. I’d love to just know you get a monitor and wire up all the v mount batteries etc.
Mot brilliant idea seen for a long while! I do have most of the part at hand and should build something similar for 'semi-handheld' shots with my anamorphic lens without the pain of the gimbal weight.
Thanks for this! I had a lot of what I needed but just ordered the parts to get this going with my ageing Ronin S and BMPCC4K. I’m going with an Arri rosette based extension arm front support for the gimbal instead. Let you know how it goes.
Yooo - so I stumbled upon this recently - I had posted on someone elses vid as well as since i set it up without knowing someone else had or before info about this movie came out... it may be the same reason... I setup the gimbal in sport or to the stiffness right before the motors start shaking from being too stiff. The effect is that it is pretty much identical to a regular shoulder rig footage with a heavy camera. So in effect, the only function the gimbal is doing it removing micro jitters. Other than that - the gimbal head almost is completely locked off. If you look at their BTS - you can see in many instances the gimbal head almost fully tracks the camera operators physical movement.
The big thing is running alongside talent, the gimbal can be pivoted off-axis toward the talent. And i can even imagine flipping the rig around backwards for a sort of shoulder mounted Don Juan, relying on the gimbal and an EVF to keep things framed
Using some kind of quick release solution on the base of the gimbal (such as the F22/F38 setup from Ulanzi) might be a better solution for balancing/calibrating the gimbal before putting it on the rig and re-balancing when changing lenses
The most important is that they used Kowa anamorphic lens set, it is as important as the camera body. People talk about the FX3 but its actually the lens that make such a result, with the specific bkoeh and the highlight roll off added to polarize filter to cut off the skin hight light and give this look. But yes its FX3 more budget for the DOP and better hotels for the crew.
Interesting video, but Id really love an exact (or near exact, skip the lens) remake of their rig. The removal of the RS2 handle has a big difference on the weight distribution and handling of this rig. I really want to see how they actually kitted this up for run and gun. Might be worth renting out the remaining bits to show us in a video; thanks!
Yes, I’m curious to see how they attached the power supply base plate to the shoulder mount. The gimbal itself looks quite high off the shoulder mount. Cheese plate on rods, or an L plate of some sort?
This is not correct. The rig we used on the movie was custom built by our camera team and includes some custom 3D-printed parts. It has no affiliation with any existing product on the market.
@@MonotremeFilms after this post it has been further more well pointed out everywhere on all our channels and socials, the concept remain the same, you guys have done by yourself, something that was already specifically patented and published, since 2020 ;)
Thanks for presenting some interesting ideas. I need to try experimenting myself. Trouble with shoulder mounteing an FX3 is getting a good balance (needs camera well back) makes monitoring tricky Yet, I always felt that shoulder mounting gave one a better chance of holding longer shots, if wanting some movement vs a more static tripod or monopod option. Gimbals can be good but difficult to manage for a sustained period without using some kind of chest mount (which is starting to look like overkill for many situations). Def need to try. Sort of makes sense to use a gimbal too, but I think far forward mounting (better gimbal use and monitoring) fights the ethos of shoulder rigging.
Thank you very much! I have a Sony ZV-E10 and for saving costs, I would like to go for a DJI RS3 mini instead of the standard version. Do you think that would work in the same way? Bonus question: As the Smallrig 2141 rotating NATO adapter seems to be out of production, do you think the Smallrig 2385 swivel and tilt adapter will do as well?

Why is everyone confused about this set up? I don't understand this. They are using this rig as shoulder and hand held with lot's of movement. They used the gimbal set up instead of a steady cam.
Why use a shoulder mounted gimbal? Isn't it obvious? It's the simplest way to stabalize a gimbal in the vertical direction. Rather clever. Wish I thought of it.
*NO* it’s not the rig they used. The DP posted several photos and although you’ve got the idea they used many more advanced parts and also didn’t use the battery as part of the setup. So the thumbnail is actually not true. Would have been more truthful to say it was a similar rig. 👍🏿
ATTENTION ‼️ If you just mount it on a shoulder pad like you did or if you have briefcase mode you can directly mount it on the pad and then use handles connected directly to the gimbals own nato rails then you eliminate a lot of extra stuff, it is way stronger also!
Couldn't they have gotten rid of the micro jitters just by having the build on a normal shoulder rig? Wouldn't the gimbal version create movements which are too smooth and take away from the 'handheld' look? This is something that confuses me 😳
How would you feel about mounting this on a tripod? If you did that can you lock the gimbal arms so there’s no wobble or would you have to leave the gimbal on still? Seems similar to the Ronin 4d in this configuration but it seems like when you put the Ronin 4d on a tripod there’s still a bit of wobble when the 4d gimbal is turned off
You could turn it off and lock off the axis, you’d effectively have a solid camera body for tripod or even handheld, then unlock and turn the rs2 back on for gimbal. Saves switching I guess which is good, only negative would be swapping lenses
@@JonathanPalfreyAh that's good to know. Yeah that's a good point about swapping lenses. Guess the Samyang V-AF would be handy there (too bad the image quality is lacking)
