How ECHO NIGHT Defined FROM SOFTWARE’s Iconic Storytelling Style

Before FromSoftware entered their golden Age with their highly influential lineup of Action RPGs Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, they’ve been around for a while. In this video, we’re going to dig up a genuine black sheep of their early PS1 days, an experimental aberration of their otherwise more action-oriented lineup, Echo Night is an unabashedly Japanese take on the western adventure game. A chilling mystery/horror puzzler that displays many of the hallmarks that FromSoftware’s famously cryptic, asymmetric and shrouded-in-mystery type of storytelling, raw and uncut.

Their aesthetic is heavily inspired by the manga Berserk. You should check it out if you like Dark Souls visuals, the creator was a master of his craft. It blends eastern and western, and you will recognize a lot of things since you played the games, they're full of Berserk easter eggs and visual references.

This game...wow. Along with Final Fantasy VII, they are both games I watched my mother play when I was very young. She used it to practice her English and taught me to read before starting school. Hearing that theme gave me a Ratatouille moment where I felt swept away to a moment I haven't thought of in well over a decade. Thank you.

It's somewhat refreshing to see such a positive take on this game. Grimbeard and ThorHighHeels were quite less forgving. Also I have to address that Armored Core (especially the first one) had ASTONISHING atmosphere, in fact I'd say it was more atmospheric than Echo Night, which might sound strange unless you've played it: there is something to the quietness that ensues as you stop moving your mech and look around the pitch blackness of a forest, or the empty streets of an underground city that you have to cause chaos in. It's a really strange feeling, especially when you count in the ps1 3D graphics that add dreamlike surreal look to what would otherwise be a militaristic action game - it feels quite unlike anything I've played, tbh. It's definetely more than just "lightning fast and relentless" action game - the final mission alone feels like Gundam as directed by David Lynch.

The first Armored Core was not only one of the best Mecha games ever, it had a staggering amount of content for its time. Also, I am glad I am not alone in thinking that game had such a unique and engrossing atmosphere.

I honestly thought their reviews were pretty fair, more falling into the "we can dig it but can get why other people can't" camp. This is pretty much one entry in a long line of old experimental FromSoftware titles that only really appeal to a specific audience. You could say that it's one of the grandfathers of the "walking simulator" genre, not quite action-adventure or horror but a separate beast that doesn't exactly play the best because nothing like it had really been done before.

Wow, that's impressive, I haven't watched this particular ThorHighHeels video but to think that he would be harsh on an obscure PS1 game was something inconceivable to me. I'd say most the AC's up till the end of the ps2 titles had extremely atmospheric worlds and dark stories/tone. The environmental/background story telling they and many other FROM games did were things the souls games expanded on later.

My very first FromSoftware game was actually Echo Night: Beyond but I was too young to get into it with how slow and different it was from other games I played at the time which had action and dialogue progressed story elements. I thought it was a one off title though and had no idea it was part of a trilogy so I'm super happy I stumbled across this awesome video, thank you so much! My Mom and I used to play things like Resident Evil or Silent Hill together in the dark and we just made plans to split the cost of a physical copy of this game to play together once this pandemic is over (she's immunocompromised) on her PS2. Here's when you realise how important the community is. You start playing Dark Souls and you die over and over again. Normally you would be like "fuck it, I'm playing something else", but then you see all this people praising the game, and how challenging it is, and talking about the lore, and you think "I'll give it another try".
You can see that happen in a bunch of let's plays, the player is irritated and frustrated by the... general clunkiness, but all the comments are like "Keep trying! It's worth it! It's part of the experience" and then when the game is over the player can't wait to play the next souls game. You also see people playing the game because they're interested in the lore (something that's only possible because of the community).
On the other hand you have all this "unknown" games (even Demon's Souls was part of this list for a while), where you start playing, you're terrible at them and go "Ok, I'll play something else" and there's no one encouraging you to keep trying.

    • @dinokaiser

@@BATTIS94 Honestly a big part of that is that their older games simply don't have fun gameplay/controls, sure some of the gameplay mechanics can be neat (with many of them getting refined in the souls games) and the worlds fascinating, but if you thought the souls games were clunky it's nothing compared to how bad the older games could get, where the souls games can get really fun once you pretty much reprogram yourself, the older games sometimes just didn't.
That's pretty much the reason I stopped playing Eternal Ring, the controls were that bad, movement was miserably slow (oh but you could move faster if you went diagonal!), movement and aiming weren't done with the analog sticks (these were outdated controls even before the PS2) and looking up and down was a chore for a first person game. I remember the EXACT moment I stopped playing, when it demanded I fight Lizards (who you have to look down to hit) and flying bugs (who you have to look up to hit) with controls not absolutely not designed for it.
So yeah, not sure how much it applies to their other games, only other one I played was Ninja Blade which I actually really liked, but there's a reason people don't talk much about their older games unfortunately.

I'm glad Echo Night is getting some attention. This is a true classic in atmosphere and narrative. I am one of those few who had followed From Software since its early days of inception when it was a very poorly received company. If you wanted a brand new game dirt cheap you could always count on From Software. My parents were not very wealthy, but I loved going all the time to the video game store growing up. Most of the time I wasn't seeing the new stuff people were raving about. I had to wait till a game I really wanted had been out for a long time and was heavily discounted. I didn't get to experience the Tomb Raiders until much, much later after they had come out, for example. But From Software was my way of getting a new game here and there when I couldn't afford a lot. This is how I came to love them: Echo Night, Eternal Ring, Evergrace, Kuon. I have actually played Echo Night 2: Lord of Nightmare. But I did not find it lived up to 1 as much as it could have. There were some horribly cheesy moments that destroyed the mood at times, characters not nearly as endearing that fell at times flat, and the premise while interesting, seemed underdeveloped.

I've become a huge fan of Soulsborne series around five years ago.
When I saw the title of the video, I was wondering was this an old game I played almost 20 years ago...
Somewhere around 2003 IIRC, at the beginning of my gaming "career", one of my older friends introduced me to couple of PS One games that I should play on an emulator (I played only on PC back then).
One of those games was Echo Night, and I really found the game to be interesting and very good horror adventure.

this style of storytelling was present in later king's field titles as well, at least as early as king's field 2 (1 in the US), but it was a side-dish to the main narrative of those games until 4, where i would say it was the main course with little direct plot to speak of.

Great video! I did play Echo Night: Beyond so long ago during the PS2 era. It was a purchase made on a whim because I was bored and looking for something new to play. I remember being surprised at how gorgeous the opening cutscene was... and how atmospheric, nerve wracking, and terrifying the game was in many sections. I remember having surreal and uncanny moments as I unconsciously synchronised my breath out loud to the sound of my in-game character's after escaping in panic from a ghost encounter. It was really great. Unfortunately, it also had one of the most atrocious voice acting in memory. I tried to hunt down the previous games but by then I no longer had my PS1 console.

Reminds me of one of my top favorite games ,"Eternal Darkness:Sanity's Requiem". It had all kinds of cool mechanics that was unique. One mechanic was if you took too much damage or you saw too many crazy things, your sanity would lessen and you would hallucinate and the gameplay would actually get weird and you would see things that were not really there and the scenes would warp and change around.
It was a supernatural time traveling investigation story also and had some really great moments of scariness and bizarreness.

I grew up playing Luigi's Mansion, and now that I'm an adult, playing Resident Evil, Hellnight, and Silent Hill, watching your videos on Clock Tower, Fatal Frame, and now Echo Night, I feel you could identify the sort of genetic makeup that went into Nintendo's attempt at a kid friendly survival horror... if there is even such a game, they definitely played around to make it.
