Also, just wanted to mention, you eluded to this machine made in China, you couldn't be more wrong, WEN tools have been making tools in the US since 1951, they are out of Elgin, Illinois.
Could be helpful to let us know the minimum drill Diameter this 12" Wen can receive. Also, can the plunger be adjusted to make it tighter, hence no play in it. Thanks, nice unboxing. 👍
I just got the 10” variable. It made that same growling noise. Ran it a few times and quieted down. How do you get the chuck off the spindle? Don’t see that slot in the spindle to drive the wedge in.
I have one just have one problem with it and it’s bad. It wobbles. I think you call that runout. It’s bad enough that it shake the table. I was doing a search for possible solutions for this drill and how I found your video. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix that?
Just got one too, it is great. I got the combo pack with a 12 inch variable speed along with the drill press table included, it is the best deal out there. Idk why the variable speed function of these newer models is not more heavily advertised, it is fantastic.
Thanks for watching. Yes it's holding up well and I've been really working it hard building the steel chassis for my race car. It's cut all the notches in the 2" bar with no problems.
Thanks for watching. It's actually quieted down a bit and has performed very well. I really like the drill in general, that CVT make a big difference when cutting metal for sure.
if you have a drill press vise like i think a cross slide ? can you then use a WEN as a router or sorts ? i would imagine it would work on plastics and wood, but maybe not metal, a true router would be needed for metals ?
Only negative that I noticed: The construction of the table is such that it is nearly impossible to use regular clamps to hold your work securely due to the ribs and recessed underside. I beat this by cutting 3 pie-like wedge shapes out of a 1x6 and using Gorilla all-purpose glue bonded them to the underneath side. This resulted in two parallel (upper and lower) surfaces and now C or quick adjusting clamps quite easily hold down any work which I wouldn't want to hold by hand.
Had mine for a year now. I mostly drill into metal or forstner bits into wood, so my speeds stay low, but I love being able to adjust this with a lever/lcd readout. I recommend upgrading the chuck to a cheap JT33 keyless chuck. About $30 from the usual getting spot. In fact, do it before you install the factory chuck. Took me 20 minutes of foul-mouthed obscenities to get the old one off.
You're 100% right, I should have done that as part of the video. I can tell you that it will stall at higher speeds (2,500+rpm) but below that it seems to have plenty of grunt. Since steel is usually drilled around 1k rpm it's been great so far.
I just drilled some cold rolled steel today 1/2”. It works well just have to take your time. There’s also a conversion kit for an annular cutter which I will be buying next..
I know a bit of a late reply, but I just bought this model, and mine was also really tight to adjust. You can remove the rubber cover over the handle nut, and very slightly loosen it. Works like a champ.
I have yet to see a video where somebody gives an explanation of how this variable speed pulley system works that I understand... I just don't get it, I can't wrap my mind around it.
The only big issue with a reeves drive is more parts to wear over time and the lack of low end speed (not an issue for any bits the avg joe would use.) That being said its just like any piece of equipment, it all depends on how well it was built. My philosophy has always been if I am going to buy a cheap too, I'm betting on the one with the least amount of moving parts. Loved the video tho. Looks like u have a great channel here
I have a 14 HP riding lawn mower with a reeves drive that has been going strong for 30 years. I use it 9 months a year. I have had no problems. I love being able to change speeds on the fly.
My Masterforce brand, from Menards, has that transmission also. That's probably the way they will all be soon. My worry is the belt getting chewed up by the sharp edges in the pullies.
Yeah, I've been looking at this for a while, was torn between 4212 10" variable speed and 4214 12" variable speed and 4210 10" 5 speed and for the same reasons you went with the 4214 is the same reason that I like it, first being able to change speed on the fly, without shutting it off and moving the belts and I like the very versatile table and of coarse the 5/8" chuck. You also said that the 4214 was there largest, it is not. It's their largest bench top drill press, but they have two floor models the 4225 variable speed 15" and the 4227 17" 12 speed. Anyway, I enjoyed your unboxing and review, I'll be looking at others as they come up. Thanks! 🖖😎
Although impressed by the 4214’s auto” drive feature, I opted for the 4211 5 SPD 10” due, in part, to the included keyless chuck and the 4211’s size likely being the better fit for my small garage work area (not to mention my ability to move a 50 LB press much easier than a press over 80 LBS). Also, having worked in a machine shop for 20 years (QC) (may not have paid enough attention, lol) didn’t ever recall our operators changing drill press speeds. Wen seems to have a good reputation so I wouldn’t think, at least, in this case, that more “bells and whistles” equals an increased possibility of malfunction.
Oh man, I just checked it out. Looks like it has a frequency drive built right into it. That's an amazing piece of tech right there but WAY out of my budget! Thanks for the comment my friend and have a great day!
Basically, run out is wobble in the chuck. No run out would be a chuck that holds the bit dead center. Some run out is expected with less expensive drills so I was surprised when basically none was present on this one.
For those of us who only wanted a simple drill press and bought one with the 5 pulley design, they should make a retrofit kt/ package that does what this gives you.
I just got this exact drill press today. When you turn it on it has the “clicking” noises and various by speed, gets louder and softer...... is that normal?? Seems like it is not spose to be like that?? Edit: I notice your drill press did it also. There is a small square piece on the side just above the speed adjustment handle, I literally touched it and it quit clicking, now it’s nice and quiet!!!
i've been eyeing out either the ryobi or the WEN 4212. the ryobi (i have all their battery tools), it appears to have plastic pullies and lid. given the same price and higher AMPs, i think the WEN WINs
I know this video is 3 years old, but come on... WEN was not the only one with that "revolutionary" variable drive, not even 3 years ago. There were plenty other brands as well which used that system.
I think it is the exact same unit as the Jet. Because both pulleys need to move I think slowing it down would be cost prohibitive. Just no real easy way to do it short of using a VFD to adjust the motor speed itself.
I think it's just new to the market. I really cannot think of a single downside to a CVT in this application but I suppose I'll find out soon if there is one lol. Thanks for watching!
I just bought one from home depot, they wont sell it in the store cause they wanna make money on the garbage they sell in the store. I hope I'm not dissapointed.
What REALLY annoying Muzak do you want to hear in MY videos? Don't ask. The answer is NO MUZAK! Ever. Here, let me show you how quiet (or loud) this suppressor is while I blare some heavy metal. Face Palm. You laugh. Dont. Waaay too many channels do this. There is no better way to show off your new car performance exhaust tone than when downed out by obnoxious hip hop. Yes, its true. That variable speed is almost identical to the way the classic Shopsmith Mark V changes speed. How is she holding up?
Just saw this video because I ordered the 2021 version. Thanks for taking the time to describe the product so thoroughly.
What are the two slots used for on the base of the drill press? For clamping your parts?
Could be helpful to let us know the minimum drill Diameter this 12" Wen can receive.
Also, can the plunger be adjusted to make it tighter, hence no play in it.
Thanks, nice unboxing. 👍
I just got the 10” variable. It made that same growling noise. Ran it a few times and quieted down. How do you get the chuck off the spindle? Don’t see that slot in the spindle to drive the wedge in.
Picked one of these up on Prime day for $189 (12 inch model). Just set it up today!
Is all of the rattling ok as u change speeds?
Yea, thats some belt chatter. It sounds bad but is perfectly normal.
The roller on the extension rattles. I threw it away.
Ho Much Did That Cost?
I have one just have one problem with it and it’s bad. It wobbles. I think you call that runout. It’s bad enough that it shake the table. I was doing a search for possible solutions for this drill and how I found your video. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix that?
I had the same issue and just replaced the chuck. That solved it immediately
I did the same awhile back and it worked. Thanks

CVTs were on mills and some high end drill presses long before they were on cars very handy for sure.
Been on snowmachines and mini bikes for decades.
Enjoyed your video. Very informative for a DIYer like me. It's been a year now. How is that drill press holding up?
Thanks for watching. Yes it's holding up well and I've been really working it hard building the steel chassis for my race car. It's cut all the notches in the 2" bar with no problems.
@@Trialnerror Great news! I ordered the 10" model yesterday. Good luck with the race car.
why does it sound so scratchy when you turn it on?? 9:40
Nature of the HST. Some are louder than others (mine is on the louder side) but it's nothing to worry about.
My plastic covers were broken too. I contacted them and then sent me new ones within a few days. Great video!
Good to know! Thank you!
Where is the laser alignment?
No matter how far apart you spread them it's still going to be the same rpm. The please don't change diameter size, right.
What is all the noise from?
It's the nature of a CVT style transmission. They tend to make more noise in general.
Thanks for the video. How has the CVT speed system held up so far?
Thanks for watching. It's actually quieted down a bit and has performed very well. I really like the drill in general, that CVT make a big difference when cutting metal for sure.
if you have a drill press vise like i think a cross slide ? can you then use a WEN as a router or sorts ? i would imagine it would work on plastics and wood, but maybe not metal, a true router would be needed for metals ?
Yea, they do make small little router tables. I looked into them a while back and they seem to work well for what they are.
Do these have forward and reverse for tapping?
No unfortunately
Would like to see how it handles a half inch drill through some mild steel. As in if it stalls alot, or maybe a hole saw to really test it.
You're 100% right, I should have done that as part of the video. I can tell you that it will stall at higher speeds (2,500+rpm) but below that it seems to have plenty of grunt. Since steel is usually drilled around 1k rpm it's been great so far.

It works well just have to take your time. There’s also a conversion kit for an annular cutter which I will be buying next..
I just purchased this and my cvt adjustment handle is really stiff any suggestions on how to make it easier to move ?
I know a bit of a late reply, but I just bought this model, and mine was also really tight to adjust. You can remove the rubber cover over the handle nut, and very slightly loosen it. Works like a champ.
Many other models have this feature too, but this seems to be a great value.
I have yet to see a video where somebody gives an explanation of how this variable speed pulley system works that I understand... I just don't get it, I can't wrap my mind around it.
Love your name, "Trial N' Error". Classic.

The electric variable speed control on the 4214 is worth its weight in gold. No way I’d ever go back to a pulley system to change speeds.
If you wanted to spend probably 10 times that price check out Teknatool Nova Viking DVR... lovely piece of kit!
Oh man, I just checked it out. Looks like it has a frequency drive built right into it. That's an amazing piece of tech right there but WAY out of my budget! Thanks for the comment my friend and have a great day!
I was going to buy one and I got this for a Christmas present today I hate when people get me tools for Christmas
Add in keyless chuck and it would be perfect!
I could hear the surgeon who worked on your back yelling in the background don't lift that out of that box
I got a hand me down drill press, ive used it a few times. However whats run out?
Basically, run out is wobble in the chuck. No run out would be a chuck that holds the bit dead center. Some run out is expected with less expensive drills so I was surprised when basically none was present on this one.
@@Trialnerror its a nice looking unit, makes me want to run and check my run out haha
just ordered MINE!
For those of us who only wanted a simple drill press and bought one with the 5 pulley design, they should make a retrofit kt/ package that does what this gives you.
what's your impression of this drill press after 2 yrs?
Really do like it. It's not top quality but for the money, I'd buy it again no question.
It's normal and will get quieter with use. Just run it!
Chattering is not supposed to be normal; I bought mine 4 1/2 years ago and it was smooth and fairly quiet from the very first.
i've been eyeing out either the ryobi or the WEN 4212. the ryobi (i have all their battery tools), it appears to have plastic pullies and lid. given the same price and higher AMPs, i think the WEN WINs
How about longevity of this variable speed system? If electronics go bad then this might be junk.
What electronics? There are literally zero electronics involved in the variable speed. It's a simple mechanical system.
I know this video is 3 years old, but come on... WEN was not the only one with that "revolutionary" variable drive, not even 3 years ago. There were plenty other brands as well which used that system.
Please don't forget, I'm an idiot. Never saw one like this before....but again, I don't claim to be anything more than a monkey with thumbs.
the broken allen wrench was so you could stick it in a drill and screw the screws in quick and easy
“It doesn’t seem have bad for a cheap Chuck”
It is. I own this drill press.
I ended up replacing the factory chuck on mine. It had way too much run out. Other than that, I am more than happy with the performance.
Video was on auto-play. I thought you were talking about boat engines! Then come back to a drill press video! lol!
Noisy thing ..geesh..what is rattling so much?.
That's what I thought, sounds horrible.
8:55 The instructions say to tap the chuck only once. Don't worry, everyone gets this wrong 😄
Waiting for my delivery of the drill press as we speak
NICE! Good choice man. For the money it's a sore dick deal; you can't beat it.
Very good review and humorous too lol, i'll buy from your link- thanks.
Really appreciate that Michael! Hope you enjoy it, I still love it. The quick speed change is just killer.
looks practically identical to my jet 12in. Know of any way to mod that pulley system to get an even lower low speed?
I think it is the exact same unit as the Jet. Because both pulleys need to move I think slowing it down would be cost prohibitive. Just no real easy way to do it short of using a VFD to adjust the motor speed itself.
Why do you think no one else uses this system if it's good, simple and cheap? There needs to be a catch. Thank you.
I think it's just new to the market. I really cannot think of a single downside to a CVT in this application but I suppose I'll find out soon if there is one lol. Thanks for watching!
Its been around for decades. Its called a reeves drive. Plenty of old drill presses and lathes use the same system
one good hit is all you need, not 4-5 to mount the chuck
All it took was one left hook for Mike Tyson to knock out Trevor Berbick, but it took him a couple rounds to get warmed up first.
I just put mine together about an hour ago. Im glad i purchased it.
Congrats! I still love mine, it's been a great addition to the shop.
Thanks
Nothing new my 1956 shopsmith has variable speed basically works the same
thanks for sharing
Love mine!
I have the 4208 model. I replaced the motor with a treadmill motor with speed control. So much better than before.
Im sure he find out about scratching the countertop afterwards.
Several other manufacturers have infinitely variable speed.
Which ones? Are they around the same price point?
I just bought one from home depot, they wont sell it in the store cause they wanna make money on the garbage they sell in the store. I hope I'm not dissapointed.
If at first, you don't succeed, READ THE DIRECTIONS !
My lady likes 14" . ( Drill press ) LOL
Daaaaaaaaaamn
Sounds like it’s going to fall apart
Cool drill press. My dad always got mad at me for ruining his bits. “Why didn’t you change the belts around? Well you never showed me. “
My Dad always got mad at me for loosing his bits....now I understand. I would have killed me too LOL.
It was nice to see the arbor and the taper in the chuck cleaned with a solvent. You're in the minority on UA-cam.
Thanks Felix, I appreciate you watching and the kind words man. Have a great day buddy.
ooh a drill!
it's a cool drill though!
LOL, I thought so. Thanks Dave!
Don't pick on my kids paint job 😂 jk 😜
Better get them some arts and crafts classes LOL.
