Great video - very clear, and easy to understand, thanks for uploading, best regards from Yorkshire, UK.
Thank you for taking the time to comment on one of my videos.
Greeting back from Australia.
P.S. I was in Yorkshire a few years back.
My hangover from the local scrumpy, is just starting to clear.🙂
@@GarryPurcell I was umming and aahing about whether or not to buy a Baofeng, but after having watching your video. I've ordered one - I'm really looking forward to getting it! When I finish work today, I'm going to watch some more of your videos - I like your style, all the best!
@@GarryPurcell - give over..I’ve got Aussie mates & they can all handle a bloody good drink..lol
@@beeboopopper6825 - me too..was unsure about which one to buy, as there’s soooo many to choose from..my mind is made up & im having one of these..I’ve found what appears to be the genuine article for a measly 25 quid on eBay..BARGAIN ! 😁
What a great review!!
Glad you liked it! 🙂
Bought one the other night UK £19.95 off Amazon Prime. Looks a great little transceiver. Thanks for the helpful video:)

Mine arrives tomorrow, I can't wait! 73

Thank You.
I appreciate your kind words.
I got 2 units and my son is about 1.5 m tall. I was in my Commodore driving to drop off daughter. I got line of sight of over 3 km. I don't know how? As I live in dense suburbs. My odometer showed 5 km. But Google maps, line of sight about 3 km. Then got scratchy. I ordered 2 of Nagoya 771 antennas. I hope I get better transmission. Happy to see someone from Australia. Cheers! Great video and clear tutorial!🙂👍👍👍
For what these radios cost, they really perform quite well, as you have already discovered.
P.S. Cheers from Endeavour Hills, Victoria
Hi again I'm not sure, Ebay sellers listing shows thia as having 3 bands and each band is a different color. I can only seem to select 2 bands and can only change both bands to the same color Is this correct?
If you have ANY Baofeng HT radio, do yourself a favor and get a genuine BTech/Baofeng programming cable and the free Chirp software. It makes programming SO much easier. You can have a channel named instead of the frequency, download a file of frequencies for a particular area or use, set offsets, tones, etc. Just make sure the cable is an FTDI cable. Those have software drivers built in and don't need any special software to operate. Then, get either the free Baofeng or Chirp software (I prefer Chirp) and watch a video or 2 on how to use it. It's really easy.
Good information.
Thanks for sharing.
Can they be encrypted?
@@PhysicsViolator No, not on a $33 radio.
@@JarOfRats thnx 👍
The antenna for 1.25 is the one with the cap on it right?
Mine the small square light doesn't lights.
hi is this used for transmitting and recieving ham radio? thanks
Nice video. Will the Nagoya NA-320A Triband HT Antenna work with this radio? Thank you sir.
I'm not certain, as I don't one that antenna to check it for you.
Thank you, Sir. Can you send TX/RX on 220 Mhz-260 Mhz or only receive ?
I really don't know the answer, maybe someone else will come to the rescue for you.
Yes you can as this is the tri band version, which includes the 1.25m band.
@@alanbanh Most Baefang tri band comes with 2 tuned antennas, however this package only comes with the regular dual band antenna for the higher frequencies. Depending on how recent these radios are manufactured they may be locked on certain bands due to FCC requirements in order to sell in the US but there are videos that show how to unlock to factory settings so you can talk on all frequencies. I just purchased this radio 20 minutes ago but already have two of the dual band Baefang radios that I use around here when I take my dogs for a walk. I have two elderly parents that I can keep up with incase something happens or if something happens to me being a diabetic. They won't quite reach 2 miles in a city but I'm sure out in the open you could easily hit 2 miles. I do own two uniden frs radios with a 50 mile range, these were just bought because I wanted to see how well they would do in the ham and gmrs frequencies. You get what you pay for with these radios but for as cheap as they are they still would do well if the SHTF.
How does this compare to BF-F8+ III which seems to me to have identical specs?
I can't answer, as I don't own that radio you mention.
would the extended battery 3800mah fit on tahat uv-5r variant?
I honestly don't know.
Hopefully someone else can answer for you.
Mine came with 2 antennas, I did purchase a 320 triband antenna for it as well.
Its a good radio, and I'm sure you will be happy with it.
@@GarryPurcell only problem I have is the standard rubber duck antennas seem to be better than my legit nagoya na-320a and na-771. Don't understand but maybe me being in the city is the reason.
Do I need to program it or will it be fine as it comes?
@@willarmstrong9576 thinking the only programing is your preferred channels
@@unreconstructed9172 if I don’t program the channels can I still use different frequencies?
Hello Garry! Excellent review! Just one question though. How far were you from the other person while you were having a conversation on the jetty? Just wondering about the Baofeng’s range...
Relatively close.
1 to 1.5 kilometers approx.
Garry Purcell Cheers. Is that with or without obstructions?
I have gotten out to 75 Miles on my Boafeng UV5-R with a Nagoya- 177 wip antenna and extended lithium battery. With the original duckbill antenna and battery that came with the radio i've gotten out to 35 miles and that's within city limits operating off the repeator.
@@Texasmilitarydepartmentvid9654 Hi Matt - what range do you typically get on a day-to-day basis, just radio to radio (without going through a repeater?). And when you were using the repeater, how far away from the repeater were you?
I got over 3 km in dense suburbs in Logan area.line of sight but my line of sight here is a block of units ,trees, houses. Etc.
Iv also order a good cable yo program (still waiting for it)..
Please let me know how you go when it arrives
Is it possible to change the frequency using chirp software to scan other bands?
I'm not certain, maybe someone else will be able to answer your question.
I have issues with saving. But chirp software is apparently able to set everything up and save.
So can you use straight out the box or have to go through a hard set up??
You will need to program the channels you intend to use first.
Between UV9 PLUS and this, which one do you think has better range and greater battery capacity? Great video. Thanks a lot!
The Baofeng UV9R Plus easily wins in my opinion, and it doesn't cost a lot more than the UV-5R
@@GarryPurcell Thanks a lot, There are too many different versions, some say 5W,some 18W, don't know how to know correct Watt output thou. Will catch one asap!
@@DesignedinAustralia0 I think 18W is a typo on the sellers site, mine is 8W. (I had a choice of 5w or 8w)
@@GarryPurcell And How do you know if it is `true 8W` output or fake? Is there anyway to know it?
@@DesignedinAustralia0 I can only go by the manual (It States 8W) as I have no way of testing power output.
I’ve got one programmed to my local hams Citizen Band repeater. I wanna talk but I have no clue what you say
Just tell them your new to the hobby, and go from there.
What’s so unique about the Tri-Band compared to the the regular UV-5R’S? Obviously it has 3 band... what else? I just got 2 of these... blindly, not knowing much, I know they cost a bit more... no need to be exhaustive - thanks! g
I hope this helps.

Your red VFO/MR button is slightly tilted and that bugs me. Have you been able to straighten it?
I never noticed that, thanks for letting me know, I'll take a look later.
@@GarryPurcell Cheers. Let me know when you find out.
@@GarryPurcell Have you checked out the button yet?
@@alanbanh Yes I did.
The button is made of rubber, and not the tightest fit, but nothing major.
G'day Garry....
I've also purchased the ($37.00 Owaaaa !) BaofengUV5R III but my one came with two antennas to, I assume ?? , cover diff frequencies.
So why didn't you get same ?
Cheers.
Good question.
Maybe because it was shipped to Australia, but not sure.
Hey Garry,
First antenna is 136-174 Mhz/440-520 Mhz and the other slightly shorter one is 145-230 Mhz/245 - 260 Mhz...
Unscrew your ant and look at the sticker surrounding the SMA connector to see what they sent.
Perhaps you should err on the side of caution depending on what freqs your transmitting on .??
Look at the current ads on eBay and the pics of the Baofeng UV-5R III and you'll prob see it presented with a ants.......
And maybe message your seller.
Goodo luck fella !
@@gregander64 I just had a look, and there is no sticker.
In Australia, we can legally use the 476.4250-477.4125 frequencies only, so I believe that's why one antenna was included in the box.
@@GarryPurcell The 136-174/440/520 Mhz ant is 17.3 cm long and the second one 145-230/245-260 Mhz is 12.2 cm long.
If thats any assistance to you.
I'll take it as granted you know the risks of transmitting with no or wrong antenna...
Cheers.
@@gregander64 Thank you for the info.
My antenna is 145mm.
Have you hook this thing up to a computer to program it?
No
I used its inbuilt menu to program the frequencies.
I know this can't be used with PMR, so I want to know how I'd go about getting a license in Ireland. Comreg's website is rather unclear about how to get a license for it.
From what I've read online, I can use it on PMR if I set it up properly, and I shouldn't get in any trouble, but since it has a detachable antenna and the minimum power setting is >0.5W, it techincally isn't allowed.
Hopefully someone from your part of the world will be able to help.
I'm in Australia, so different rules.
What is effective range in km... Plz reply kindly..
I have never venture too far from base camp, so I really don't know the answer to your question.
Perhaps someone else can give a maximum range they've achieved with this radio.
Ok.. Thanks
Hams (in America, at least) call them handie talkies
Thanks for that.
I had no idea the USA called them that.
what is the range??
I honestly don't know.
Hmm, I cannot seem to find this model on the Baofeng website. Have you verified that it is a genuine model? I’m thinking of purchasing a couple but I’m afraid that it might be a copy of an existing model. Perhaps the UV-5X3...
Its a genuine model, Link Below.

Mine came from Banggood.

Garry Purcell Hello again. I could not find the UV-5R III as a variant for the UV-5R on BaoFeng’s website. Moreover, you are the only person to have reviewed this particular product and the packaging which you received did not list the model. If you were to look at the UV-5R reviews on UA-cam, they actually come with official packaging, stating it’s model, etc. Yours was more general packaging, which could be used to package any Baofeng radio, really. Hence, this product seems quite unusual to me. Excuse the tone but I was simply stating what I found...
@@alanbanh I also am not sure if these variants are in fact genuine. I am looking at buying this exact model, but like you said I can't find this variant (UV5R III) on their website.
Baofeng list the variants on the page of the UV5R, but then states that there are other variants not listed that they only made a few of. Maybe this is one of those?
This is copied from their website:
"Variations include the: UV-5R v2+, UV-5RA, UV-5RE, UV-5R+ (Plus), along with several other lesser produced variants. Some of these variations may also no longer work with case specific accessories such as the original UV-5R batteries."
Although this might only be talking about the cosmetic variants of the UV5R. I'm not sure.
Definitely genuine. I've got one that I bought direct from Baofeng UK.
@@smokey6455 Yeah mate I reckon it comes off of the UV-RX3 radio. Just bought one though. I’ll let you know if it’s genuine or not.
Is the uv-59 3 same as uv-59
Not sure, sorry.
Quansheng et baofeng c'est pareil le câble de programmation n'est pas compatible avec Windows 11
IS THIS A HAM RADIO ALSO?
Amateur radio, also known as ham radio, is the use of radio frequency spectrum for purposes of non-commercial exchange of messages,
Why you say walkie talkie.??
was that Ham radio?
It depends on which part of the world you live, plus how old you are, as to what terminology you use to describe this radio.
Hope that answers your question.
no i don't understand the answer what does it matter where i live i'm from america in michigan but what if i'm from europe one name.
Can you explain me please
@@YU5CF-sv2cq In Australia, any Radio operating outside the accepted Australian 40 channel citizen bandwidth, generally needs a Ham Radio Operator license.
If you use the Citizen 40 channels you don't require a license in Australia. (So I don't call it a Ham Radio for this reason.)
These rules are different, depending which country you live.
I hope this explanation helps you.

It looks like a toy walkie-talkie.
Its small, that's for sure.
@@GarryPurcell You can buy a $10 dollar extended battery to increase the size of the radio.
the problem is not getting them to talk, the problem is getting them to stop
Can't for the life of me understand why so many people spend so much time on showing the opening of a box. 80% of that type of content could be deleted and distilled down to what actually matters.
The video description SAYS it's an unboxing.
P.S. "Chapters are there ,so you can skip to the sections of interest"
You might be surprised at what actually comes in some boxes.
For example, not all manufactures supply batteries on expensive items.
I've had one box, that was so well made, the instructions that came with it, recommend it be reused for other storage purposes, rather than throw it out haha.
Interesting, I might get some, but can you turn off that annoying voice?
There are a LOT better radios than ANY Baofeng!
True.
But at a much higher price.
