I’ve already got 1764 with Loksound decoder - had it since 2008 and can’t fault it. I’ll check but the Loco was about £80 and the sound decoder £60. It looks, sounds and performs (except fans) just as well as this latest one. Good Luck to those who can afford over £300 today but there’ll be the 2008 models around and £100 for the LokSound you’ll find just the same for half the price!
I'm tempted by the IC Swallow one as deluxe, because I don't yet have a sound 47 or one in IC Swallow. However, at over £300, it is way out of my price range and for that I'd rather get an 0 gauge loco...
And the price is? Oh, my god. I could get 4 Locos for that price. This Hobby is rapidly turning into a Collectors Market only. Gone are the days when you could buy a model by saving your pocket money. I still ้have a Class 08 Shunter in BR blue and the price on the box is £5.75. What can a new Class 08 do, that mine can not. Oh, sound. How long before you turn it off? Hattons, I hope you are listening, we need a model maker to make affordable models and make them in the UK. No container or Shipping costs. Tooling, may not be cheap, but quantity will cover that cost. Has it worked for the others by going to China? in the short term, Yes. In the long term, No. Martin. (Thailand)
Nice but at £314, £288 and £203 respectively (Rails), I will be sticking with my Bachmann and Vitrains units, all retrofitted with Sound, detailed and lighting kits. Obviously not as well detailed as these, but do the job and pass the 3 feet test 😉
Prices are now getting beyond the reach of a lot of modellers! I feel sorry for someone just starting out, then I can see many saying model trains are to expensive, and go into another hobby!
@@nigelsabin1713 Yes I am trying to work out whether to get into railway modelling or train-simming. I feel the latter can provide much greater variety and immersion for cheaper.
Must admit l do like the new 47 (sound fitted) with Woking brakes etc. l’m quite impressed with way you can control the driving aspects. I used to drive the real ones out of Kings Cross. However. I’m really pi**** off with Bachmann as they sold out so fast even my local dealer could not get any. (Sf/sfx) you say they spent £1,000,000 on retooling so why the hell can’t they make enough? Whoever’s responsible should be sacked they must have lost thousands of pounds in lost sales. Also with the huge shipping costs and delays due to making on the other side of world why not bring production to the uk?
At 2:45 there’s a lovely shot of the loco showing the detail, and that lovely bare copper pickup that stands out like a sore thumb. Just what you’d want on over £300 worth of model! Each to their own but I’m glad I’m sticking with small industrial locos!
Not for me as over priced again from Bachmann how can they charge well over £200 for a standard model when other manufacturers are well under £200 with just as much or more details won’t be having any new Bachmann models for a long time
Looks nice, and if I was starting again I’d go for these,, but having about ten of the older versions , all renumbered, for about £120 a shot , I’ll probably stick with them
Now stupidly overpriced from DCC Ready onwards and to me the sound versions don't really cut it for the price as they sound too hollow or cheap and not deep enough and most likely due to inadequate speakers. Will be interesting to see what Heljan conjure up with their new Class 47???
How on earth do the manufacturers expect to attract new modelers into hobby when they charge prices like these. I've said many a time what is point of paying for mega detail on a model when you only see it at very close range. And what's all this nonsense about different brackets on the buffer beam, well whoopeee dooo. This hobby is fastly going down the road of only being affordable to those with deep pockets.
Couldn't agree more Mike. Manufacturers seems to be catering more and more for (rich) rivet counters and leaving the rest of us behind. Sprung buffers - really? Why? I wish I had the skills of the rivet counters but I don't and never will so 'horses for courses' as they say. Which sadly means no more new models for me........
I presume there is a reason why the middle axel box on the leading bogie of D1585 remains unpainted - or did Bachmann forget that one ? - Lovely models, but these days, with £300 loco's hauling carriages costing £40 each + costs of lighting kits, its easy to have a grand tied up in a single train... Railway modelling is no longer a cheap hobby
i like the deluxe class 47s with powered fans and unusual coloured window glazing. I love the Intercity Swallow livery class 47 828, i have that class number in virgin red livery by vi-trains. (Seven Valley Railway Kidderminster)
Nice to see somebody investing in a new class 47. It looks good - although I'm not convinced about the headcode panels. Possibly worth noting for those who like to run ultra-real senario's, 47004 is depicted in Railfrieght Construction livery, but carrying her Tinsley depot crests - i.e. after she was transferred away from the Construction sector and into the Distribution pool, so putting her on a train of cement wagons could be considered fanciful.... Although RfD did convey a number of cement wagons in the mixed Speedlink trains. As for the sound, well lets just pass that by....
Sound is always so subjective but I'll be going for one . You can always trade in one of your old ones or sell them on certain auction sites as many people do and get a good chunk of the outlay knocked off . Superb loco IMO
my money WILL be staying firmly in my pocket as even though they claim to have invested over £1 million in the project - I personally feel Bachmann MAY have scored an "own goal" with this latest class 47 offering as the usual exorbitante price will put the model out of most peoples pocket and reach coupled with the clear fact that the sound actually sounds nothing like the real thing!! and the "gimmicks " fitted are now getting quite ridiculous and out of hand !! what next ?? ,a moveable power handle and driver whos arm is attached to it ,OR working windscreen wipers OR a faint red glow coming from the hotplate to replicate it being switched on OR why not go the whole way and fit a small diesel engine and generator set that actually works, in the engine room ?? ,so we have to beg the question as where it will all end ?? -
If manufactures were to install cabin crew in diesel locos it may encourage real enthusiasts to buy two of the same model so the two locos could travel in the opposite direction from each other, because with cabin crew fitted they would only run it in one direction. I'm guessing the cost of including cabin crew would not exceed a few pounds. Cheers Greg from Australia PS: Your comment would be of interest.
Good looking models, but i would have to take off the windshield wipers on "1E11" because I find the size with that color extremly distracting which points out the detail that it is way oversized, Otherwise they are cool.
So much moaning about cost. I mountain bike (my bike is a few years old now but the 2021 model is north of 5 grand to buy), fish (some rods/poles are hundreds if not thousands of pounds, same with reels, boxes, luggage etc) and tinker with cars (4 grand of suspension on my van, 800 quid for an exhaust for my Mini, 1500 for bucket seats etc etc etc. I think 300 for a top notch model is actually pretty good in comparison and nobody is forcing you to buy one - just buy a Hornby Railroad version.
Whilst I accept your point, up to a point Dave, I would just like to point out what a pile of ......... I think the Hornby Railroad Class 47 is? It is incredibly lightweight and can't even pull 4 coaches adequately. Hornby's penny pinching here is a massive own goal. Weight could be added for just pennies to improve performance significantly. I think there is a market for something in the middle with a good quality mechanism but no superfluous bells and whistles - half of which break off on it's first derailment down an embankment!
Im comparing the cost of a hobby with another hobby. Top notch loco, 300 quid. Top notch bike, 10 grand. Knitting needles I guess are about a fiver. Make your own choices.

A fair point well made, during the process of sound recording the real prototypes the manufacturer can only use what that engine at the time sounds like. An interesting dilemma to solve thats for sure. 😊
