I wish sunscreen was a lot more cheaper, so everyone could use it liberally. Like the amount needed is insane, and it's almost comical how they even make sunscreens having less than 50ml of product in it. It literally lasts like less than 10 days, just on your face and neck(if you reapply it properly, that is)

As an Australian, I grew up with some truly terrifying ads by the Cancer Council about melanoma. Growing up, we lived by the 'Slip, Slop, Slap' mantra: Slip on a long-sleeve shirt, slop on sunscreen, and slap on a hat. It's amazing how much that stuff sticks with you.

      @sophiehanson3198 2 роки тому +13

@@BlueBlossomsBlues Well, no. The Cancer Council doesn't recall sunscreen, the Therapeutic Goods Administration does and Australian safety regulations are EXTREMELY stringent. Benzene is not an ingredient in sunscreen but can be a contaminant in raw materials used in the manufacturing process. The products were recalled out of an abundance of caution. Per the TGA: "Exposure at the levels detected would not be expected to cause serious adverse health effects, and risks to users are considered low".

@Zee Aye That's actually a really good and interesting point. One of the reasons so many Australians get skin cancer is not because of the "hole in the ozone layer" but because a lot of us are descendants of white British colonists whose skin isn't equipped to deal with the Australian sun.

A typical bottle of sunblock will provide 6 to 8 applications. So if you are reapplying through the entire day, that’ll last you 2 days. I’m shocked that some people buy a single bottle of sunblock and they expect that to last an entire summer, especially when they buy a single bottle for an entire family.

I feel like culture / habit is also a factor. I grew up in an Asian country and when we go to the beach, we go early morning, go back indoors or seek shade before 11am, have lunch, chat, maybe sleep, then go back out again when the sun is down. When I moved to the US, it’s the opposite. I see a lot of Caucasian Americans go out at 10-11am until 3/4pm. They reapply sunscreens, sure, but they are exposed in the sun longer under stronger UV index. We usually just apply sunscreens once or twice, but we try to avoid the sun at its peak.

@@Alex-tu1zy I don’t know what does it have to do with my comment. I’m just sharing my observation, that in the US, it’s customary for beach goers to stay under the sun during peak uv hours. You’re saying we still need sun exposure at peak hours for vitamin d absorption, but I’m talking about the habit of staying outside only during the peak hours, from 11am until 4pm, which I think we can both agree that is more destructive than helpful.

Asia is a huge inspiration when it comes to avoiding sun damage!👍🏻🤗 (use of hats, gloves, high spf, umbrellas…) My mother was unconsciously following that wise example: we would always leave the beach at 11am and go back at about 4 pm 😊 and that sounded like complete nonsense to my Spanish husband.

As a black woman it’s crazy how many of us don’t think we need sun protection because of the melanin in our skin! I’m currently working on finding a good daily sunscreen. It’s hard for black people to find a good one that doesn’t leave a white cast. I also want one that’s moisturizing and not too oily. I also need it to play well with makeup. I'm not even actively searching for shade--I just feel better when the sun isn't beating down on me. I don't think I'm weird in that regard. They get angry at me for the (honestly minimal) protections I take. Hell, I got a talking to from my manager one day last summer because I didn't show proper appreciation that the assistant manager did the inside work and left the outside work for me to do. I was "overreacting" by mildly expressing concern for how long I was going to have to be out in the sun without sleeves, sunscreen, or a hat when I wasn't expecting to work outside at all that day.

My chest and legs are rarely exposed to the sun, as I wear scrubs most of the time. I haven't gone to the point of daily sunscreen on my arms, but I'm aiming to get my car windows tinted with my tax refund. I’m 59 and am having Mohs surgery on June 2nd on my nose. Now that I’ve lived through the years before there was sunscreen as well as many years of daily use, I now feel this is one of those invisible problems till you have to have a big hole cut out of the middle of your face or worse. There’s no way to make kids and teens and even young adults believe this is likely their fate when they reach their older years if they haven’t been diligent with SPF. I wish more people would show the pics of these surgeries. It might make a bigger impact. Thanks again doc. Such an important subject.

It was devastating for her and she's had several reconstructive surgeries and laser since. I wish this is the type of thing that the younger generation could see when we try to get them to use sunscreen. Although just the fact that sunscreen is available is a huge plus. PS: Do Broad-Spectrum sunscreens, while protecting the skin from UVB/UVA, also prevent tanning? Cuz that's not what I've observed real-time. I use SPF50 PA++++ and I'm very mindful about applying the thickest layer possible. I still experience tanning. I try to stay out of the sun and in the shade at every opportunity. Without a sunblock, i would probably tan in under 4 minutes of sun exposure and with sunblock on, in under 20 min. I'm an Indian.

When I was younger, we didn't talk about the importance of the sun's adverse effects. The problems don't appear right away! But later on at an older age! You have to be aware that if you are exposed to the sun and you don't see sunburns or brown spots for a few years, they are there and they can cause you damage a few years later! Most of the time if I use it on on my whole face its before a shower because it’s easier to get off in the shower. If you use it on your whole face outside of the shower, you’ll want to use a soft warm wet washcloth or makeup eraser to wipe off before your second cleanser. I hope that helps!

Hi Dr.Dray I would like to say thank you for sharing the important of keeping our skin safe and healthy. If I never seen your videos I wouldn’t have thought about how important it is.
Anyways I have been having issues when I apply sunscreen and I was hoping you can answer my question.
I work at a warehouse with no AC so I am sweating while I work but I also started using a Sunscreen to protect myself. I have Very oily skin and starting using a La Roche Suncreen that is Oil-Free. While I work, hours later of applying the sunscreen I start to feel little bit of a sting in my eye and it’s basically the sunscreen running off my face towards my eyes. I don’t want to rub my eyes because it will be worse nor I want to rub off the sunscreen so that my skin can be protected. Any advice or method you have that I can use? Or do you recommend any sunscreen that will help me not have this problem? I appreciate you! Thank you!

I am curious as to the recommendation to reapply mineral sunscreen specifically every two hours, considering that these are not designed to react chemically with UV radiation and degrade, unlike chemical sunscreens.

Dr Dray this was such a great message. I am an avid SPF user. I love listening to you with all of your expert knowledge. My husband watches and listens to you with me. Could you do a video on best products for dry -sensitive, normal and oily skin in each category of cleanser, moisturizer and spf especially spf with tint (that is not orangey.). I personally would love sunscreen with moisturizing and tint.
I love your suggestions, but so far I would like your opinion in the VERY BEST! Thanks so much Dr Dray..

so my husband and I got sun poisoning last year on our honeymoon. did I have sunscreen? yes. was I allowed by the trip guide to use it? no. they didn't tell us ahead of time that you were not allowed to use sunscreen on our excursion. and I want to be cleat this wasn't you can't uses sunscreen that isn't reef safe. they would not let you use sunscreen period. it was horrible, and everyone on this excursion got a burn. I'm so upset that they didn't tell us this beforehand
this was in Mexico so just FYI for anyone doing a trip

@@Vivian_85 yes, they are perfect for oily skin. Warning, it (the UV moisture gel one) does have alcohol in it. The smell dissipates after you apply it. If you’re not bothered by alcohol, you should try it out. It’s so lightweight, it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing sunscreen at all!
