When I was in HS and found out my art teacher was a Vietnam vet. I told him I wanted to enlist. He asked why I would do something silly like that. I told him I wanted to serve my country (I am Chinese with a heavy accent).
He shakes my hand and I don't know if that changed him or he gave me a strange vibe. I got this feeling he was against serving.
Another possible problem: my son had a teacher for both 10th and 11th grade with whom he had a great relationship. My son spoke to him at the end of 11th grade about getting a recommendation. All seemed great. My son got back to school in September and the teacher was gone. It took a while to track the teacher down at a new school. He was still willing to write a recommendation, but the process was much more complicated than the teachers at his school. All the more reason to line up multiple recs.
Yes, that's a real problem. It's also a great example of why lining up multiple recommendations is so important.
