Dawn, I feel your pain. Marathons aren’t like any other distances, not like halfs and not like ultras. You have to fully invest in a marathon and never know what’s going to happen. This video created the most emotional response in me from any of the videos you two have released. Thanks for keeping it real, as these videos really help runners to see the commitment required for a marathon. Another day you might have got away with it, you just never know how a marathon is going to treat you. Keep on keeping on! ❤🙏

    • @tworunningbrooms

Thank you. 👍 Yes, one of the attractions of the marathon is the challenge. We all experience highs and lows, and at the time, it can feel very upsetting. You're right the investment to do a marathon is high, and in doing one, we need to understand that there's always a chance it won't go to plan. Sadly, on this occasion, it didn't.
For me, I think if other things in my life to help me move on
I'm glad I gave it a shot and am already looking to the next. 🙂👍

Thank you for posting. I will probably never run a marathon, constantly anyway, I’d have to stop and walk, so I admire those for even just giving it a go. I watch a few running you tube videos and when I watch one were the person has to DNF, it’s makes me realise even the best have the days were they struggle and that helps me in my running journey when I have a bad run. I’m always grateful for the honesty and analysis too. So thank you once again for posting. And I look forward the next video!

good on you Dawn, takes a lot of courage to make a video of a bad marathon day, the day before any marathon is hard on the nerves, but it makes it 10 time worse when you know the body isn't 100% any sign of injury day before, total nightmare, with running & marathons there is super highs & super lows & everything in-between, I'm super grateful that I did my marathon pbs last year at the age of 59 but me personally now that ive turn 60 feel that its a whole new game, its hard for a 30 year old to run a marathon, running a marathon in your 60s is a challenge that not many people would understand unless they are 60+ rest up, keep on keeping un & enjoy your next adventures

Thanks, Reece. Yes, they do feel harder now. I wonder if that's also because I'm no longer fresh at them and also have experienced those high and low points, so know what's to come.... The beauty of the marathon is we never know what kind of day it's going to be. When it goes right, the feeling is amazing...
At some point, I'll do my last one, but I now have unfinished business...🙂

Did the Chester Metric in 2019 a week after a hamstring injury. My physio got me through it but I walked so much of it. It broke me and I've not run as far since. I genuinely think I would have been better at mentally overcoming my physical struggles on a city route but the long country lanes with nothing but 10-ft high hedgerows for distraction meant I could only concentrate on my hamstring. I was absolutely fine the following weekend on the more interesting Manchester Half route. This is a really good video because it reinforces the important lesson for us all that if you run often enough then everything will eventually happen - everyone will eventually get a DNF and it not be fair & not be their fault.

I am sure there are so many of us that can relate to having a bad marathon experience and it can take quite a while to get over the disappointment. I am so sorry that you experienced that set back at Chester but I believe you are a very strong minded lady and will after time reflect and come back with a positive mindset.
    Sciatica is painful!
You will have plenty more opportunities to fulfil you undoubted potential in the marathon if you so wish and I would recommend that you use the fitness and strength you have built in your marathon training to go and have a really good run at one of the shorter distances which will help east the disappointment at this time. Finally reflect on the advice you would give one of your runners that you coach, I am sure you wouldn’t advise giving up and I am sure you won’t.
Marathons are touch but that’s what makes it even better when you get one right!
Stay strong you wonderful lady. X

So sorry Dawn. These things happen to the very best, as this proves. I’ll make a couple of points if that’s ok.
From the outside looking in, your preparation looked meticulous and perfect so that training will put you in good stead.
Always another day and another race.
The pre-race nerves and anxiety are natural and I get this every single time. The pressure and expectations we feel from others and also pressure put on ourselves, fuel the anxieties. I’m wondering if that played a part in your decision to stop.
Always think a slow finish, is better than no finish. If you had a 11 mile trot then think you should've used those 11 miles on the course, and then finished the final 2 miles to get medal.
Regarding race strategy, 8min/mile for first 20, and going for it in final 10k was a risk, when you consider the hills in final section.
Sorry it was such a difficult day but you’ll be back so try not to worry.

    • @tworunningbrooms
      @tworunningbrooms  Місяць тому +1

      Thanks, Colin.
When I stopped, it was at the point of the course where there was an out and back 2 miles section. I didn't realise at that specific point, I would have to get all the way back on foot. Once I spoke to the marshal a bit further on, I'd already missed that section of the course. I would've had to go back down the course to do the section I had missed. At that point, it was the last thing I wanted. But yes, in hindsight, I could've walked/jogged to the finish if I'd not missed a section of the course trying to find out how to get back. It was not an easy decision or a day I enjoyed. But as runners, yes, we expect to have highs and lows.
Also, as an experienced runner myself I see nothing wrong with my race strategy for that day. On paper my marathon pace should be around 7.40. 8mm was comfortable and the strategy I chose that day was my decision based on what I knew of my training and how I felt on the day.
      I move on...👍
