    Nice video. Nick Drossos I have an idea for a video for you: How to deal with drunks who invade your personal space or put their hands on you but are not a serious threat. I've had many experiences with drunk people who didn't really want to fight but were sort of play fighting. I've always talked my way out or evasively maneuvered my way out of these types of situations. They're incapacitated to a large extent. I've seen videos where people escalate it to a seriously violent response when even the most basic of footwork and/or grappling (and a few calming words) could have immediately diffused the situation. Part of it is common sense and situational awareness.

      Great idea man! This is an awesome question. I literally had an encounter exactly of this nature a week or so ago on the bus. Ill try to keep it brief.. basically i was riding on the bus and at one of the stops a pissed drunk mentally unstable native.man stumbles on and is yelling very loudly getting in peoples faces being derogatory etc. At first he starts in on a guy siitting.on the inside row directly behind me until he gets up and moves away towards the back of the bus then he begins to look around for another target creeply leering and shouting incoherent babble. Now i excude a not to be fucked with kind of aura and am pretty jacked even though iam a bit short. I also train and research multiple martial arts and combatives to the point of obsession..so iam not in the least worried about this unfortunate fellow simply aware and watching in case i need to assist another passenger if this guy decides to get physical next thing you know..
      this guy plops down into the seat beside.me and immediately starts staring right into my face and talking loudly..spraying spittle and reeking of booze. The way i handled it i came off joking and friendly simply.laughing at what he said engaging him in conversation and joking banter. At one point he put his finger in my face in which i warned him once that wouldnt be a good idea. He tried again ina childish not too aggresive manner and grabbed his wrist and we had a little push against push arm strength stand off in which he got easily rekt he then pulled it away and started yelling anlther incoherent drunken story. So while this all had been going on his disrupting and volatile attitude had not.really to my notice dropped down from a 100 to.a maybe 75 and we arrived at the skytrain. Where everyone got up and deboarded including this gentleman and i use that usely and myself. As i got off the bus driver says "hey man thanks alot for that.. that was incredible. I thought.i was going to have to stop the bus.and get the cops" i really didnt think it was a big deal but i guess this guy had scared alot of passengers. Security came and talked to.him as he stumbled away from the bus for a few mins and then he simply wandered off. I really didnt think about what i had done until after the bus driver thanked me. And then i realized i had non violently diffused a potentially very volatile situation without even thinking about it. I really didnt want to hurt this guy as it was he was just a drunk crazy old man whom i really felt sorry for. If he had crossed that invisible.line i had drawn in my head on what i was prepared to allow him to get away with though i was more than ready to react and and had already theorized my game plan.. iam glad though at the end of the day he sat beside me and not.someone else who he may have scared. Assaulted or got his ass kicked by. Noone ended up hurt or going to jail in the end. Violence isnt always the answer. But be careful at the same time.. if you let.someone into your space too far they can get the drop on you. Need to sense the vibe is key and look for the tells. I didnt feel much danger from this guy so i was very relaxed..at the same time i knew i would hospitalize him with ease if it came down to it but instead of baiting him with my own aggression or verbage into pushing me into justifiably and legally annihilating him i chose to joke around and be friendly as.much as i could to defuse him. Alot of people would use his behavior as an excuse to just sleep.someone out for there own jollies or to show off. I have no such desire or low self confidence thankfully so everyone got to walk away that night...peace from vancouver canada

      Sean H. You made some good points. Have to say also that your writing skills are up there too. It brought back memories of when I used to live in Vancouver (I live in L.A. now). I many times had to cope with drunks, bullies, and the mentally unstable on public transport there. I developed a major league "stank eye" that made me look crazy and it prevented 99% of trouble. I've had drunks sit beside me but usally I found their talk amusing and did not feel threatened. I have moved to a different part of the bus many times too. I was pretty fight-ready back then but honestly was not a 'roid head who searched for fights. I dislike bullies far more than any other group.

      This is such a common observation, and difficult when your gameplan always involves the extreme. You can't throat-strike someone merely for being stupid. But being drunk is never an excuse to be an asshole, so I have little empathy for these people.
      The worst people however are the ones you can tell get into bully behaviour when they're drunk. As a friendly looking guy and not that buff, I seem to attract bigger dominant guys, who might give off a "friendly" vibe but really invade your space, or even mess with you and have fun on your behalf. The risk is that if you get unfriendly and break out of their frame, they could get offended and flip in a second. I think the key is to not let your confidence or guard down no matter what, play along as much as you need to deescalate but keep your integrity. If you're confident that you could take on the threat, then you can probably go as far as telling them off firmly like "don't touch me" or "that's not ok" while otherwise it's probably better to give off a boring, uninterested vibe so that they just see you as a boring buzz-kill. And have a worst-case-scenario gameplan ready, but swallow your pride... it's never worth it if you can avoid it, try to rely on verbal and body language instead.

      Drunks don't count. No challenge. You either tell them firmly leave you the fuck alone. Or you drop them period. They will stumble/fall if they're really tanked up. But most the time I just laugh with/at them. Just stay firm and ready. But just analyze their stature and movement. Obviously if they're bumping into walls/chairs etc. They are no threat.

    Hi Nick, agree with much of this. I suggest what could be a good video is one showing not getting grabbed in the first place. Why train letting people put their hands on you? My training has changed from letting people grab my hand to reacting when I see the grab coming and less of letting people put their hands on me in the first place. Lee Morrison and Mick Coup give good demonstrations of this.

      Well the wrist grab is just a starting point for learning basic technique and angles in reality unless you are a woman no one is gonna grab your wrist I do Aikido and the three levels of defence we have is 1. defend when they grab your wrist 2. defend as they are about to grab your wrist and 3. attack them before they attack you. Yes people may laugh at me I do Aikido but when people ask about the wrist grabs that is what I tell them it is just a tool for learning a technique nothing more no one will attack you like that so for beginners a wrist grab is a good way to start learning a technique.

    • @martinpratchett
      @martinpratchett 6 років тому

      Dominik Doherty I'm not going to laugh at you for doing Aikido and agree that it's a good way to start learning a technique. I do believe though that from a self defence point of view it should be emphasised the best defence is not to get grabbed in the first place. I think the best drills start with a form of resistance to the grab so it's ingrained not to let people put their hands on you.

    @Nick Drossos, this series with Elias is fantastic and I like how you want to experience full force of the moves during training. You continually mention deescalation so how about a video showing some effective techniques on how to best achieve deescalation in some of the most common scenarios? You know, the usual stuff like a shoulder bump while walking by each other, or “what the F are you looking at?” or “You got a problem?” or even being called all sorts of emasculating names in public which challenges ones ego?

    A great way to break the 2 hand grip on your arm is to punch or palm strike the attacker’s face or neck straight away with your free hand. His grabbing your arm has trapped both his hands. Plus if he is pulling you, follow that force and slam right into him. Or even with elbow. This is for when you are in danger of course. Jog his memory.
    Around the 2 min mark when you show the hands up to fix your hair release, another variation is to drop the elbows and press forward in double tan sau (palm up, elbows bent at 135*, pressing fwd towards opponent, focus on lat and elbow power), WHILE stepping into them. Many times it breaks the grip, if not it really torques their wrists, then you are right there to strike, grab , knees, etc while their arms are outside you. You can then also rotate your palms to grab their arms as you knee or kick them. . Be sure to move your body all together, not just leaning or reaching fwd.

    At 11 min area, another idea when attacker grabs the hair is to hit him with your free elbow, will change his triangle for sure. A cross or uppercut elbow

      Either when people are really stupid, or have a huge weight/skill advantage anyway. Let's say a guy like Alistair Overeem runs into a fool that wants beef with him, A guy the seize of Alistair could grab arms to show that you're not really getting out of it. He will just lock a random guy into place. I for example will not be able to do all those fancy moves when both my forearms are held tight like that.

    If somebody grabbed my arm i would just knock him out with the other free arm . Why would i bother to grab him back and push him ."shake the head " that's what i learned from ur other gr8 vedios Nick . I've been training hard to do that .

      if its a friend/relative then generally you dont want to do damage to them, so you need other tools in your tool box to deal with all situations

    • @G36-999
      @G36-999 6 років тому +5

      Headbutts will hurt you a little bit even if done correctly, but you want to head butt up, with the top of your crown (hardest part of the skull). In the movies where you see someone lean their neck back and just smash forehead to forehead, yea thats just fucking stupid.

    • @martialmusicman
      @martialmusicman 6 років тому

      You have to hit your opponent with a harder part of the body. The forehead/top of your skull is gonna deal more damage against their nose or even jaw.

    • @missmay713
      @missmay713 4 роки тому

      The key is using the forehead/crown of your own head (the strongest part) agains the soft tissue of their face and nose.

    The techniques shown in this video is clean. But in the streets, you meet different types of people.
    If you face a larger opponent you will never get time to react like shown in the video except telegraph your movements.
    At 1:34 he's clearly confused and the technique cannot be applied in real life situation only if your opponent is skinny with no strength in it.
    No offense to anybody, but this will hardly work for some people facing weak opponents.
    Thank you for the great content though.
    Cheers!

  • @marcd1981
    @marcd1981 2 роки тому

    Several problems with this video, unfortunately.
    1. This is a UFC fighter, people will be "star struck" and think he must know what he's talking about.
    2. He is more concerned with how he looks (constantly fixing his hair and shirt) than actually defending himself.
    3. A lot of this is typical martial arts school "grab me here so I can do this technique", not real world scenarios.
    The recommendations for when someone is grabbing you with both of their hands is not the first thing I would think of. Why would you try to grab their arm or arms and try to out-muscle them? If someone uses both of their hands to grab you, they have left themselves wide open for a number of strikes to their face/eyes/throat. This doesn't matter if they grab your arm or shirt, they have still tied up both of their own hands, leaving themselves open for your attack.
    The grabbing of his hair (which is a major liability on the street) was not a realistic defense either. When someone grabs your hair, they are not going to hold you in the same position. They grab your hair and start yanking you around, pulling your head and neck and trying to take you to the ground. You will not be able to look them in the eye to try a head butt or eye gouge.
    There are many videos showing this, mainly with women, but you can see how effective a hair grab and pull is. No chance for a counter-strike with how violent this move actually is. Professional fighters use corn rows / braids now, but you won't have your hair like this outside of an octagon / cage / ring, and your hair will be a tempting target for your aggressor.
