If I remember correctly (because I've never seen Temple of Doom) but in my LUCASFILM Best Archive book there's a scene with a Tri-motor plane at the airport. Too bad they couldn't turn that into a set. I don't know how I ended up buying the Crystal Skull airplane LEGO set back in the day. It was one of those rare occasions when I was shopping for LEGO and I actually had my head on straight.
I have to say, that in the LEGO universe they are great. But for example the car and airplane could have some stones more for a little bit more details (also if the target are children). Why can't they release a set with a grave, that is closed from every side and modular?!?!
The original 2008 wave of sets is easily one of the best lines ever released by Lego. Those sets were adored and people bought them like hotcakes. If Lego seriously stops after three measly sets, omitting 3 films out of a 5 film franchise, that’s just ridiculous. Temple of Doom is iconic and this set looked wonderful. And wasn’t the whole reason for bringing this line back to promote Dial of Destiny?
How is the actual temple of Doom not an iconic scene from the franchise? The rail cars is one of my favorite scenes from the first 3 movies and seeing how we have two sets from Raiders of the Lost ark and one from Last Crusade not getting one from Temple of doom is a huge miss because we need the great trinity of sets from those movies
It’s extremely iconic. But there is no way that movie is made today with the level of cultural insensitivity baked into it by today’s standards. Doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the movie or have a healthy debate about it, but easy to see why a large corporation like LEGO would be risk averse to avoid releasing this set, or to have executives at either LEGO or Lucasfilm get cold feet and pull the plug on it.

The specifics of the debate are beside the point, the point is that there IS a debate with people who feel strongly about the movie in either direction, making it controversial with arguments being made that it is culturally insensitive. If the temple of doom is truly canceled I’m gonna be seriously pissed. It was my most wanted set in years from my favorite Indy film. As a lifelong Indiana Jones fan, depriving us of such an awesome set because a design error or Lego being too soft or whatever is beyond me.
Agreed. That's the only one that I was looking forward to, since it's my favorite of the movies. If it's cancelled, then I won't buy any of them, because what's the point if all the movies aren't represented? I'll look at them on my shelf and always be reminded of the one set that was canceled.

Seeing the 'Fighter Plane Chase' set revived a bit of trivia. Now if I'm remember correctly, the German fighter prop from "Last Crusade" was made by using a Swiss aircraft, but I can't specifically remember the name of the model of Swiss plane used for the movie itself. But either way, this way they could make a semi-realistic BF-109 for the chase without destroying a real one for the flying into & exploding in the tunnel scene.
Fingers crossed they continue the Indiana Jones line. From how awesome the Golden Idol Temple looks, I'm really hoping that they'll eventually do a similar styled multi-part 18+ diorama of the 3 Holy Grail challenges (possibly 4 part if they include the grail chamber) from the Last Crusade.
If you look at the instruction manual for the temple of the Golden idol set, you can see that lego is being very open with representing the Indiana jones movies by talking about the film's topics on the movie timeline page.
Makes me wonder how many sets get all the way to the end of the production before being canned. Seems like a lot of sunk costs to not release a set that we have pictures of the box art of. I wonder how much money they lost on the technic osprey from a few years ago
Sunk cost fallacy. The price point is set before they make a set, so if the set they end up designing is either too expensive or doesn't look like it will sell well, they cancel it. And releasing one more set in a theme can dilute sales of other sets in that theme or related themes. Like of the three indiana jones sets, I will definitely buy the cheaper two, but because of my primary love being star wars sets, I can only really afford those two sets. If there was the fourth temple/mine cart set, no matter how cool it was, I wouldn't be able to afford it unless I gave up getting the AT-TE or Justifier. And something tells me there's a huge overlap of Indiana Jones and star wars fans.
While I am incredibly disappointed, LEGO never officially announced it. I've started just ignoring leaks, they are cool but they might just lead to disappointment. Besides, for me most of the fun comes from randomly learning that a certain theme returned. It's like getting movie spoilers for me.
You are not entitled to an explanation for a set being cancelled before it was even announced. All we had to go on was leaks. Do they need to respond to every leak which doesn’t result in a product to market?

It's funny how we're at a point where we think that it's more likely that LEGO looked at the finished set and said "nah, too controversial, let's cancel" that an actual issue with design, production, packaging, distribution or any explanation that would be reasonable in the context of any other company.
It's sad because that has legitimately been their track record in the last couple of years. It's how Jabba's Palace was prematurely retired, how the Osprey and City Dynamite Factory were cancelled, and why they actually seriously considered retiring the Police and Fire lines (plus even the friggin' White House) for a hot minute. Someone raises a stink (most often with absolutely no real standing behind it) and LEGO kowtows.

Heard somewhere that The Temple of Doom was delayed due to some stability issues with the rails. I don’t know whether or not that was true but I hope so. I’d really like to see this set come out!
It would be a shame if they cancelled the line after these three sets. It is the first license I'm interested in and am willing to vote for more with my wallet. So if they don't continue that would be kinda disappointing, given how much potential for sets the four movies have. Even though many despise the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, I would love to see another temple of Akator or the jungle chase, maybe even the Peru graveyard. They made dark scene sets before like the Graveyard Duel for Harry Potter, as well as many mass destruction weapons in the LEGO Star Wars line. Sure, Indiana Jones is more grounded in reality compared to these purely fictional licenses, but I don't think it makes that much of a difference. As long as the planes, trucks, etc. don't have the "symbol" on them, we're all good.
but you know its ok to have atom bombs and guns etc in many shows but if you show someone like indian citizens as religious zealots with that broken english its a twitter mob time.

As an Indian, I really want this set man. I loved the Indy trilogy (and even the 4th one to some degree) to death so I’m really hoping it comes down as it was the set I wanted to the most out of the 4
Excellent video as always Ryan! I think the Lost tomb and the Plane Chase sets are incredibly good value here in the UK, £35 and £30 respectively. When you compare it to the Star Wars spider droid set these are a steal.
With the Dial sets maybe they designed them but are waiting to see how the film performs. Seeing a crystal skull as well as the SW sequel trilogy weren't the hits they were hoping for.
They better do more Lego Indiana Jones sets. 3 is not enough, there’s so many good scenes they could do like the tank chase in the third movie or even a scene of the nuketown in the 4th. I also wanna see some sets based on the Dial of Destiny
Lego Indiana Jones is the only theme of Lego where I will go out of my way to buy the sets day one at full price. Not even Lord of the Rings could get me to do that. I think it’s hilarious that this company which seems to take so many weird shortcuts to get the most money they can is fumbling the one theme that I am willing to spend HUNDREDS on. Baffling.
That mine cart chase would be absolutely awesome. It's weird for Lego to first approve this and then change their mind due to potential controversy. It's true that the Temple of Doom is not the greatest Indiana Jones movie, and it has some problematic issues, but everybody already knew that. Surely they would consider that during the planning stage, and avoid it altogether if they think it's a problem? At the same time, the movie has been out for decades now, and it's not that terrible, and it's easy for a Lego set to just focus on the great parts (like the mine cart chase). So this would be weird. I think it's something else. Maybe they'll release it later but they couldn't get it ready for the initial launch. Either way, it's an exciting line. That fighter + sidecar looks absolutely perfect. I'm a bit less enthusiastic about that Lost Tomb, I'm afraid.
Out of all of these Indiana Jones set image leaks from earlier in the year, The Temple Of Doom was the one that I was looking the most forward to. Why LEGO? Just why. I feel like down the line, LEGO is just getting less and less sensible. Let’s hope that they finally come to a conclusion that they don’t really know what fans want.

And as far as that fighter pilot being a GERMAN/Nazi soldier, yeah, it has NO MARKINGS whatsoever to make anyone think that unless they had seen the original film would they even know that. Notice how the Nazi cross is removed from the plane as well unlike the original set of Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade Fighter Planes set? The Temple of Doom is a movie where a religious cult literally kidnap children and then sacrifice some of then via pulling out their hearts and then sending their still alive bodies down a chasm into molten lava while the cult leader laugh maniacally! Not to mention that the rest of the kidnapped children are meant to serve as slave labor to look for the Sankaran stones, or to look for possibly more Sankaran stones. Does anybody really truly wonder why Lego is no longer going to finish producing this set? Look at people around you today. People today are so offended at literally anything, so much in fact that they had to remove the name of Boba Fett's Slave I ship and rename it simply Boba Fett's Starship! What pissed me off from what i've seen, is that the diorama set doesn't even include printed plate pieces and its just stickers. For $150, that's unacceptable... Especially when every Star Wars diorama is under $100 and has said printed plate pieces.😑
Indiana Jones was my childhood. Both movies and LEGO sets. I own a lot of the original sets and I'm so excited to get my hands on these new ones. But conspiracy about these three sets being the only 'new era' Indiana Jones sets literally scares my heart and soul. I was so hyped to see for example the tomb of a knight with a lot of rats from The Last Crusade or the actual path to the Holy Grail with that Templar knight at the end. Or literally anything else from any other movie that was missed last time. I hope we get to see a lot of new sets before LEGO stops with Indy forever.
It might just be a resource allocation issue. With so many new sets and new themes Lego is taking on i.e. Avatar, LOTR, Sonic, Dreams etc. I can’t imagine Lego stores or even department stores have room for all of it.
I've heard that licensed sets don't cost more because they're licensed, but all sets of all categories cost more and share the licensing costs, although LEGO probably takes in more profit from their own properties like Ninjago etc.
There is literally nothing controversial about indiana jones (people are only pretending it's controversial because they don't care about fiction and storytelling), they still air the movies on TV and hasbro is gonna release black series style temple of doom figures later this year.

Years back Temple of Doom drew a lot of controversy at the cinema. Spielberg and Lucas were both going though divorces. Did it show on the screen? Maybe? But bare in mind that Spielberg never made anything remotely like that film again, which is a shame as it's epic. Also had a new rating created for it. PG-13. Genuinely think the reaction to it affected Spielberg. Damned shame about the set. Would have liked it. But will definitely pick up the Escape from the Lost Tomb set. That is an incredible looking set, and a great price.
I asked lego support lmao, they said it has been cancelled and we will not be seeing anything from this set as they generally do not provide anything from cancelled sets. I had hoped to at least see the instructions so I could build it, but I guess that was too much to ask lego support for lol
New to lego so this may be dumb question. Why does Lego just cancel a set after working hard over the course of a year and releasing a box with the display art and obviously have the build ready? Seems like a giant waste of time, money and resources only to cancel for not a good reason?
If anyone else is itching for Lego WW2 vehicles, you should check out Cobi. They're a Lego clone that mostly sells those. Compare their BF-109 to the Fighter Plane chase one, it's no contest between the two.

I never realised that in 2019 LEGO never released a Minifigure series but released 20 and Minifigure Series 18 in 2018 so there was never a Minifigure series 19
Right now my biggest theory on what may be happening is LEGO is doing the same thing hasbro did with the newer star wars films and focusing more on the classics trilogy than the regular releases since those sold overwhelmingly more that the new era star wars. this mainly based on the market trend of a recession and them wanting to focus on products they know will sell and they may have been weary of too many unproven films to keep the line afloat.
I remember last time lego started burning money on sets they don’t have intentions of making, they were going bankrupt. Seems they need another close call with bankruptcy to give them a reality check.
I think they will just delay the Temple of Doom set. I feel like there's no reason for them to cancel it. When it comes to depictions of religious icons, well we have another set in this same wave with the Ark of the Covenant. Plus there's nothing in this set recreating the super violent scenes of Temple of Doom. There's no cage, there's no heart for Mola Rahm to hold, the roller isn't present, and there are no slave minifigs. So I feel like the Temple of Doom set is just fine and it's a part issue.

Excellent video as always Ryan! I think the Lost tomb and the Plane Chase sets are incredibly good value here in the UK, £35 and £30 respectively. When you compare it to the Star Wars spider droid set these are a steal.

With the Dial sets maybe they designed them but are waiting to see how the film performs. Seeing a crystal skull as well as the SW sequel trilogy weren't the hits they were hoping for.

Lego Indiana Jones is the only theme of Lego where I will go out of my way to buy the sets day one at full price. Not even Lord of the Rings could get me to do that.
I think it’s hilarious that this company which seems to take so many weird shortcuts to get the most money they can is fumbling the one theme that I am willing to spend HUNDREDS on. Baffling.
That mine cart chase would be absolutely awesome. It's weird for Lego to first approve this and then change their mind due to potential controversy. It's true that the Temple of Doom is not the greatest Indiana Jones movie, and it has some problematic issues, but everybody already knew that. Surely they would consider that during the planning stage, and avoid it altogether if they think it's a problem? At the same time, the movie has been out for decades now, and it's not that terrible, and it's easy for a Lego set to just focus on the great parts (like the mine cart chase).
So this would be weird. I think it's something else. Maybe they'll release it later but they couldn't get it ready for the initial launch.
Either way, it's an exciting line. That fighter + sidecar looks absolutely perfect. I'm a bit less enthusiastic about that Lost Tomb, I'm afraid.

Out of all of these Indiana Jones set image leaks from earlier in the year, The Temple Of Doom was the one that I was looking the most forward to. Why LEGO? Just why. I feel like down the line, LEGO is just getting less and less sensible. Let’s hope that they finally come to a conclusion that they don’t really know what fans want.

And as far as that fighter pilot being a GERMAN/Nazi soldier, yeah, it has NO MARKINGS whatsoever to make anyone think that unless they had seen the original film would they even know that. Notice how the Nazi cross is removed from the plane as well unlike the original set of Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade Fighter Planes set?
The Temple of Doom is a movie where a religious cult literally kidnap children and then sacrifice some of then via pulling out their hearts and then sending their still alive bodies down a chasm into molten lava while the cult leader laugh maniacally! Not to mention that the rest of the kidnapped children are meant to serve as slave labor to look for the Sankaran stones, or to look for possibly more Sankaran stones. Does anybody really truly wonder why Lego is no longer going to finish producing this set?

What pissed me off from what i've seen, is that the diorama set doesn't even include printed plate pieces and its just stickers. For $150, that's unacceptable... Especially when every Star Wars diorama is under $100 and has said printed plate pieces.😑

Indiana Jones was my childhood. Both movies and LEGO sets. I own a lot of the original sets and I'm so excited to get my hands on these new ones. But conspiracy about these three sets being the only 'new era' Indiana Jones sets literally scares my heart and soul. I was so hyped to see for example the tomb of a knight with a lot of rats from The Last Crusade or the actual path to the Holy Grail with that Templar knight at the end. Or literally anything else from any other movie that was missed last time. I hope we get to see a lot of new sets before LEGO stops with Indy forever.

It might just be a resource allocation issue. With so many new sets and new themes Lego is taking on i.e. Avatar, LOTR, Sonic, Dreams etc. I can’t imagine Lego stores or even department stores have room for all of it.

I've heard that licensed sets don't cost more because they're licensed, but all sets of all categories cost more and share the licensing costs, although LEGO probably takes in more profit from their own properties like Ninjago etc.
There is literally nothing controversial about indiana jones (people are only pretending it's controversial because they don't care about fiction and storytelling), they still air the movies on TV and hasbro is gonna release black series style temple of doom figures later this year.

It’s wild to me how affordable these Indiana Jones sets are in comparison to Lego’s recent price increases. I’m assuming they’re consolidating the wave to see how successful this wave will be. If they sell well, which they may since the prices are good, I’d bet we’ll see the Temple of Doom and other future sets

Years back Temple of Doom drew a lot of controversy at the cinema. Spielberg and Lucas were both going though divorces. Did it show on the screen? Maybe? But bare in mind that Spielberg never made anything remotely like that film again, which is a shame as it's epic. Also had a new rating created for it. PG-13. Genuinely think the reaction to it affected Spielberg.
Damned shame about the set. Would have liked it. But will definitely pick up the Escape from the Lost Tomb set. That is an incredible looking set, and a great price.
Temple of doom is my favorite of the trilogy; raiders is a classic and crusade is kinda a bland retread of the first one.

I asked lego support lmao, they said it has been cancelled and we will not be seeing anything from this set as they generally do not provide anything from cancelled sets. I had hoped to at least see the instructions so I could build it, but I guess that was too much to ask lego support for lol

New to lego so this may be dumb question. Why does Lego just cancel a set after working hard over the course of a year and releasing a box with the display art and obviously have the build ready? Seems like a giant waste of time, money and resources only to cancel for not a good reason?
If anyone else is itching for Lego WW2 vehicles, you should check out Cobi. They're a Lego clone that mostly sells those. Compare their BF-109 to the Fighter Plane chase one, it's no contest between the two.

Well, if we make this wave a success and buy the sets, we'll get a bigger line.
Right now my biggest theory on what may be happening is LEGO is doing the same thing hasbro did with the newer star wars films and focusing more on the classics trilogy than the regular releases since those sold overwhelmingly more that the new era star wars. this mainly based on the market trend of a recession and them wanting to focus on products they know will sell and they may have been weary of too many unproven films to keep the line afloat.
But by that logic, don't sell indiana jones at all... indiana has never sold merch well

Funny enough, I have found the fighter plane chase and Escape from the Lost Tomb released early in some kroger stores near me.
I think they will just delay the Temple of Doom set. I feel like there's no reason for them to cancel it. When it comes to depictions of religious icons, well we have another set in this same wave with the Ark of the Covenant. Plus there's nothing in this set recreating the super violent scenes of Temple of Doom. There's no cage, there's no heart for Mola Rahm to hold, the roller isn't present, and there are no slave minifigs. So I feel like the Temple of Doom set is just fine and it's a part issue.
