The first part of the video from minute 0:00 to 2:24 is a 2022 excerpt of Master folk artist Techung during his live performance of traditional music from Lhasa, known as Nangma and Toeshey. This song belongs to a vast repertoire of Tibetan music taught to Techung by his late Master artist Gen Lutse la and Garpon Pasang Dhondup la, who were great exponents of this musical tradition.
Techung has professionally recorded and archived these songs making them available to general public free of charge. These performances ensure that traditional music is preserved and shared with a wider audience.
The second part of the video from minute 2:27 to 3:17 is a 2021 excerpt of apprentice Tenzin Norbu performing an ancient melody from Western Tibet or Ngari on a traditional lute known as Ghowo.
The third part of the video from minute 3:22 to 4:31 is a 2022 excerpt of Master folk artist Techung and apprentice Tenzin Norbu performing together at Techung’s concert of Nangma and Toeshey songs.
In 2022, Techung created an ensemble of Tibetan traditional musicians and performed these songs as a worldwide premiere in the US presented by the World Music Institute in NYC, the Tibetan Community of Washington D.C and the Queens Public Library during the Asian Heritage Month. Techung invited apprentice Tenzin to be part of the troupe.
