@@aryabratsahoo7474 When you add up all the vids he's done on the expansions it's probably close to or over three hours at this point. And TW:W3 vid coming out at some point too. Weirdly the fact that Mandalore isn't (by his own admission) the most l33t player makes his opinion super valuable to me. People like LegendOfTotalWar and Kerkovich have great channels and info but they're so super-in-depth on the single player and multiplayer metas (respectively) that they have complaints and praise which, while completely valid, just don't apply to me. I know reviewing recently/yet-to-be released games isn't the focus of the channel so I appreciate that he does it for TW:W.
God the advisor's lines will pop into my head at the slightest provocation. I feel your pain. Though Warcraft peasants are worse for me. Yes, Mandalore? Okayyy. Job's done!
Having never played any Stronghold game (until an hour from this comment, seeing as I just bought Stronghold + Crusader), the Warcraft units are stuck in my head, but it's not nearly as bad as Command & Conquer, especially Generals.
The sound design is so impressive. If you hear something that's not background noise or flavourful sounds, it's usually important. An important unit dieing, fire that just got started, etc. The music ramps up when you move your units towards the enemy or when they send troops to you. I love this game
Though Slaves existed back then most of the work was done by Serfs (not to be confused for slaves as they are not owned but are so in dept that they have to serve their lord) and Peasants (Peasants can range from the stereotype of poor and to Merchant and well off)
@@forickgrimaldus8301 Serfs were slaves, subject to physical punishment, selling, raping etc. You might argue that serfs were given a homestead to manage for themselves, but so were a lot of slaves.
@@Vanamutt nope different states of servitued, a Serf isn't owned a Slave is property, being a serf means very limited freedoms but you aren't the property of the Land Lord the best way to describe Serfdom is that you are indebted heavily to the Lord and he has a lot of power and authourity on where you can work and what he can do with you. Saying they are the same is not true, you can Sell a Slave, but you can't sell a Serf Again its an important destinction also bare in mind, Slavery in the Near East can be more in name only than litarly Property, the Mamluks for example were very powerful yet are classed as Slaves despite having power along with the Sultan. (They eventually came to Rule Egypt)
@@forickgrimaldus8301 Yeah, all that falls apart when you take in to account the judicial system at the time. It's like me calling slaves indebted servants. Same shit, different names.
@@Vanamutt not really they are still classified as a different group if they are really the same they wouldn't be called Serfs but Slaves again I am repreating myself, LORDS OWN SLAVES NOT SERFS, to say they are the same isn't accurate at all, you could say that Serfs had similar experiences with Slaves but they can never be SOLD to others or Traded to Far Off Lands, thats why the Feudal Lords Used More Serfs than Slaves, You Have to still Feed and Give Housing to Slaves, For Serfs You Don't hence they are in the Long Run Cheaper. The Idea that they are the same Likely comes from a Marxist Thought as they often use Slavery as a Byword for Oppression for Example Wage Slave and Used the Feudal Structure in a Similar fashion to the Class Structure.
The games set in 1066 so for the England military map it’s very weird as that’s the same time England was invaded by the Vikings and the Norman’s at the same time
Honestly, it's suprising how well these games aged visually and gameplay wise. They just play so nice and fluid, everything kinda explains itself well, there are no major UI or control issues, even lack of A-move isn't that big of a deal. And the visuals... backed with that soundtrack - 10/10. Also, interesting note: this game was EXTREEEMELY popular in Poland - back then not many people spoke or read english (in PL), and this game came out with full PL voice acting - and believe me, it was as good, if not better than the original. I kinda miss those times - full PL voice acting in games was rare, but done VERY well, with professional voice actors and with people that cared. Nowadays... quantity went up significantly, quality though... one of the Battlefield games in recent years was voice acted by youtubers - it was really, really bad idea... Anyway, thanks for great video and big nostalgia injection. I still remember the announcer lines after all these years - he really BURNED them into your brain :D
Same for Russian localization, it was done insanely good! Even to this day memes from advisor's lines are used in the russian web portals related to games. Brings back so many memories!
The reason the archers come out first with the ladders in waves during sieges is to try and simulate traditional medieval siege warfare, where the archers were used to draw fire and engage the enemy while battery rams, towers, and ladders were brought forward against the enemy's walls/gates.

Ullrich Pfeiffer God I feel so ripped off. My friends only played empire earth and age of empires 2, with a sprinkling of battle for middle earth and age of mythology. I’ve always been bad st those fast twitch RTS games (still can’t get into AOE2) but I love these slower paced more economy based RTS games like settlers. This seems so perfect for me. Would have lead me to discover Things like Anno and dungeon master earlier. Ugh if only
jpc1918 I never really bought games when I was younger. I got what was handed down to me. So when i finally got an RTS it was AOE2 because everyone had that. I literally never even heard of this. It’s insane.
Stronghold has a special place in my heart. I used to spend hours just using the freebuild mode in the original game to make maps. It was like a zen garden experience. Amazing music and pretty great voice acting. It's incredible how well the graphics have held up over two decades later, as you've said, and I always appreciated the amount of details they put into them and the animations. The soundtrack is still in my personal music collection and I play it a lot, actually! "Two Mandolins", "Sad Times", and "The Maiden" were my favorites. "Stained Glass" and "Under an Old Tree" are also really good. And yeah. That guy's voice is burned into my brain as well. CAN'T PLACE THAT THERE, M'LORD. CAN'T PLACE THAT THERE, M'LOR-- CAN'T PLACE THAT THERE--
Dear god, I loved Pikemen. They are the best barrier troops you could ask for and just butcher knights like it's no one's business. They also looked very snazzy and sleek, but not overly elite like Swordsmen, which made them excellent to decorate your castle with. Crossbowmen were a bit similar.
I love this game, been playing it a lot when I was a child. Loved the voice acting, too. Oh, about the voice - this game has a GREAT Russian localisation, which made it a lot more accessible for me as a kid.
Honestly my dad introduced Me to stronghold crusader when I was kinda young, growing up watching him play it. When I got my pc and found his old pc games this one of my all time favorites. I may be a little biased but this game truly is a 10/10 from me.
I'm honestly shocked how few videos on Stronghold 1 there are. I thought it was a beloved classic that people wouldn't be shutting up about if anything.
Just recently installed this game right after I saw this review. Haven't played it for years, getting back to it will be a first timer playing it. Thanks MandalorGaming!
Stronghold was supposedly based on Castles games. But Castles did not have the instant build. Instead you lay out your blueprint and artisans start building while you defend them with your military and insure that there is enough supplies. I miss that mechanic and is searching for another game that does the same. Most important was if your archers where on the walls while they were being built, it would lift them up, increasing their range.
my favourite kind of taxes also, it triggers a peasant opinion, something like "Please, please lower the taxes, i can't feed my children", which has a random chance at anyone, and is extremely funny (in my opinion) to hear it from priests
One little thing: At 18:33 you mentioned that the buildings can't make rally points. The buildings can make rally points, and you have individual rally points for each unit type in each building, which you select by pressing the numerical keys and placing down with the mouse.
I would say I can't believe I read that in the adviser's accent, but then I also somehow was completely able to hear him saying "Please subscribe to MandaloreGaming's UA-cam channel, Sire!".
Probably the two most-played games of my childhood, and I still enjoy the odd Crusader every now and then today. These games were the gold-standard of early-2000s isometric RTS games, with such a timeless art style. It's a shame all the 3D sequels weren't that good.
Every once in a while, my Mom will randomly go "CANT PLACE THAT THERE MY LORD, MOOOORE WOOD IS NEEDED, THE GRANARY IS FULL SIRE" to remind me of what she had to go through for most of my middle school years
This is the coolest review I've ever watched my lord. Seriously, it is such a narrative beautiful and ridiculously detailed review. You can tell the reviewever has personal connection to the game. Ah man, this brings back memories
Even with the sequels, I feel no other game has captured the satisfaction of building supply chains and having a little medieval terrarium like these two. Anno and Settlers come close, but I've felt like neither require you manage logistics in the same way, whereas here I felt like the people themselves mattered - not just the buildings.
the thing i remember most about one of the sequels, don't remember which, is siege ladders that couldn't be removed except by demolishing the wall and rebuilding. And wolves that could climb over those indestructible ladders to eat your peasants when you thought they were safe behind walls. These ones were vastly superior to any of the sequels in my recollection. Loved these games back in the day. hearing the advisers voice gave me memories ^-^
I came instantly. This series has been my childhood. While others played AoE, I played Crusader. Vor entye par bringing back these great memories, vod. Parjai cuyir an!
For those who have problem finishing Extreme, "Wood cutter hut" trap can block the spawning enemies and gates, giving you plenty of time to destroy them with stone rain
Highly reccomend Legends. It's a wild ride. It improves on some things, has ugly horrible bloom graphics, and has a special place in my heart. Stronghold 2 is a very safe, very underwhelming sequel. It has several improvements, but Firefly got swallowed by it's own formula. Still would reccomend checking them out on an exceptionally cheap steam sale. I had a great time playing both games and Medieval 2.
Stronghold 2 had so much potential, yet it messed up SO BAD on the single player military campaign (wich is a shame cos i thought it was awesome but in reality only the economic side of the game worked right)
The problems with Stronghold can be illustrated with a small example: Neither the original Stronghold (2001), nor Crusader(2002) had the option of choosing your player colour. While that might be weird since earlier games had, it's not really a big deal. However, none of Stronghold 2 (2005), Stronghold Legends (2006), Stronghold Crusader Extreme (2008), Stronghold 3 (2011) and Stronghold Crusader 2 (2014) added it. That's 5 games, the last of which was in 13 years after Stronghold, none of which added this small QOL improvement. Stronghold 2 added various economic systems like dung, crime and honor, as well as a few military units and the ability station troops inside of towers. Legends added actual factions with different myth units. S3 and SC2 might have added either nothing, or a few military units. But on the whole, Stronghold never had any refining or updating of core mechanics. The army system that Mandalore criticised in this video? The one without formations and mostly about troops clumping together? Never got changed either. Different people might prefer different games in the franchise. Or perhaps more accurately, different versions of "the Stronghold Game". Because despite loving Stronghold and Crusader, and having played everything before Extreme (and owning everything before SC2), I have to admit Firefly studios has innovated about as much as Piranha Bytes.
11:57 Well, he fulfilled his promise. If you excuse me now, I need to hop onto my Squig and join up the big Waaaaagh; at least the green-thing will think that's what I'll do, yes-yes?
If only you could understand the Russian language you would be blown away how good the localization of the game was back then. It was done by professional voice actors who worked on the television and sounded so nice and clean, damn makes me want to play it again.
You actually can make rally points in Crusader by pressing the the number correlating to the unit for which you want to make a rally point. For example, if you want to make a rally point for archers, you just click on the training groud, press 1 and a small flag should appear which you can place wherever
Dude....this game took over my life as a child, I remember trading one of my guitars for my friends laptop with this game on it. What is the 2019 equivalent to Crusader? lol wow, 'Greetings, Megadeth' .. that's enough to draw me in. "the advisor's voice is burned into my head" tell me about it..
Watched this video a long time ago. I've realized you can set rally points by choosing numbers on your numpad for each unit. So you can set up rally points for each unit in the game. Whether it is from the Barracks, or the Mercenary camp.

Saying they are the same is not true, you can Sell a Slave, but you can't sell a Serf

Stronghold 2 had so much potential, yet it messed up SO BAD on the single player military campaign (wich is a shame cos i thought it was awesome but in reality only the economic side of the game worked right)
Stronghold 2 isnt safer. They tried to make it more citybuildish which alienated some.
