Some of the stuff about the morality in the Overlord games, like the good guys actually being evil, is really meant to be tongue-in-cheek. Gnarl mentions things like yeah, we're evil but at least we wear our evil on our sleeve instead of pretending to be righteous and moral, like all the so-called good guys. Same case with the "good" actions you can do throughout the game: they're not really good, they're self-serving. The sequel measures this in domination vs destruction, which is a much better approach than evil vs. very evil. The sequel really nails the tongue-in-cheek morality and also the more strategic approaches to fights really well, like having mounts that do unique things for the minions riding them, and unique hidden paths to get your minions in a vantage point. I'd love to see what you think of the Overlord II, it's very dear to my heart.
I think people underrate just how evil the 1st game lets you be. You can literally exterminate the elven race outright, even the example Mando uses in the video of Elves wanting you to kill the slugs and free them: the evil option is to just open the cage and let the slugs eat them (you aren't told to do this, you just have to be thinking like a bad guy.)

Whoops they were talking about Fellowship of Evil. Guess that's how sad it is that I remembered this over it.
After thinking about this and The Darkness 1/2 I would love for there to be a resurgence in the trope of amusing goblin companions that assist you in your further “misdeeds.”
Ahhhhhh, Overlord, what an amazing series, that I truly love, sadly it is now probably dead after the rightful failure of the abomination of a game "fellowship of evil" Edit: If you pay attention, you can see the wizard in all of the locations where the bosses are located, he even tells you that it was him who corrupted the heroes.
Yep. Another fun fact is that the game's story and humor was done by one Rhianna Pratchett, the daughter of Sir Terry Pratchett, the man who wrote the Discworld series. If you know Discworld, you might see some similarities in the humor. She also did 2, which I liked and had far more story, and...sadly...the aformentioned Fellowship of Evil. Uuuuugh. Troll, REEE with me on this.
And apparently the wizard was also the original overlord and actually the heroes killed the protagonist because they wanted all the glory for themselves
@@jhonnoilcringeincarnato8593 From what I remember, the wizard was one of the heroes, but he got possessed by the spirit of the original overlord after their victory. That's how he was able to corrupt the rest of them; he used their friendship with the wizard to influence them. The player character had sacrificed himself to kill the first overlord, which is why he was left dead in the tower. I think the reason the game is so oriented to being a good guy is because there's supposed to be a whole irony around the situation. You're a great hero turned evil tyrant, but all the other heroes became even worse, and you, the blatant bad guy with evil armor and an evil tower, have to save the lands from the old heroes.
The game of my childhood. I still have the world map from the physical copy of the game. It's actually very useful as it shows you where some of the upgrades for your tower are if you know where to look.
I love that in every review you do, there is a section with an analysis on the music and ambience, most reviewers overlook this and to me it has been a really important aspect in every game, there are even games that arent enough for their marvelous soundtrack, such as drakengard 3
Overlord 1 and 2 are some of my favorite games from my younger years. The humor and combat were never really my draw but I could never get enough of those Minions and the feeling of being a General leading an army. So many fun memories
@@poisondamage2182 Not just the name, but that they're specifically a race of slapstick, evil, diminutive, voluntary slaves who seek an evil master to serve and in the sequel get corrupted into more monstrous versions of themselves. Bit of a huge coincidence, no?
It'll be fair to both sides of this debate if we just said that the Disposable Me minions pretty much hijacked the term "minion" and pretty much a hurdle to get over if anyone else tried to use the term like Overlord has. In other words when you tell some random person in the street the word, "minion" where will their mind go to 99/100 times.
This is literally my favorite game of all time. I got introduced to the series with overlord 2, which is arguably as good if not better than overlord: raising hell. Both are great games but differ in a lot of places. Overall you want to act as evil as possible or nice as you want but follow your theme while conquering the world. These games are super old though
The only bad part of Overlord 2 is the spider temple- which is were zero punctuation's review ended because the game apparently didn't grab him so when the part even those who liked the game(like me) disliked happened he dropped it. too bad a lot of the best levels and story happen after that, makes me wonder if he would have gotten into the story and humor if he got to them, since they didn't seem to register to him.
I really appreciate that you took the time to try the controls with both the controller and keyboard & mouse. Not a lot of reviewers spend the time to explain the differences but it can help a lot with a first impression in a game. Great review as always, and I look forward to the next one!
Playing this game on the hardest difficulty was what made me learn how to kite and choose the right tool for the right job, like the slugs, only greens can do the job efficiently, or trolls, only brows kiting, some blues to ressurect the ones that wont come back fastly and reds as artillery support. One of the best games that I ever played :) The last one is a mess unfortunately
Pro tip: use the max level Minnion spell with 35+ browns/greens in the arcanium mine and attack the slug pile- march the Overlord through, this will trigger the queen slug to spawn, a the small slugs won’t be able to spawn fast enough to keep the minions of her. Now you can enjoy the scenic route through the arcanium mine because no more slugs will spawn. You should only have to kill two or three more.
One more series on "I'd really wish it was revived by sane people" list... damn, your videos hurt sometimes. Wait, have you made Fable, B&W or Bard's Tale reviews?
I thought this was a review of a new Overlord title and I was so excited but your just talking about the originals. That's fine I love the Overlord series I wish they would remaster it
Yeah, the Forgotten God was quite the fun bugger. He had some good lines, and the way he tortured the elves gets me every time. Truly a spiteful bugger after my own evil overlord heart.
Glad to see a video of this from you. Overlord was one of my first video games and one of my favorites of all time. It's like pikmin with attitude and the constant lord of the rings shade that it throws is so wonderful. My nostalgia for it just edits out the flaws and it will always have a place in my heart. I haven't played overlord 2 and I probably should especially since it seems like they were on the road to great improvements with the raising hell dlc.
Missed Potential: The Game. The sequel was much better but still not great. The third game was... it wasn't Overlord as we knew it. There are spinoffs for handhelds and the Wii if I'm not mistaken. Haven't played them but they're probably not very good.
Ah Yes ,the third Overlord game. or better known as "We want to see if People are still interested in Overlord so we give them an awful mess that is not Overlord at all" -the game.
The Wii version had every minion use the same equipment, but makes them all look the same. It also scaled back on your army since that game chugged real hard.
I love this game, flawes and all! Its just so simple and fun dungeon crawler with badass looking hero/villain! I wish they would make new Overlord at somepoint
Overlord 2 was the first game I played of the franchise and my most favorite. I was addicted to it as a kid, I really wish they would try making an up to date version of the overlord franchise if not completely new. Imagine a new overlord game with the quality story and graphics of God of War 4.
I remember saying this game and only ever using the exact required amount of red minions. I had one specific minion which, thank RNGsus, never even got sent back into the portal, much less died. Seriously, he just survived through everything with like, max armour and weapon stats for a minion who just looted the remains of his bosses enemies.
God i love this game , I always loved the idea of being the antihero of the game and also controling npcs so this game is perfect for me. Wish there were more games like this
I love this game. The sequel was pretty good too. Also, yeah, in this game you get a choice between good and evil, it's the sequel where it's a choice of evil vs very evil.
Oh man this was literally the first video game I ever played! I used to absolutely obsses over it. I had a sketch book with lore notes and my drawings of the minions. It's still one of my favourite games (along with it's sequel) probably in part because of nostalgia but still.
@@thedonatello1621 okay? I think Overlord 2 is better than 1 in almost every way (not saying Overlord 1 is bad or something Its amazing) but Overlord 2 had itself more "figured out" and was able to give more content than 1

@@thedonatello1621 yeah the first one was a bit darker in its world design, especcially the elven woods who were turned into nightmare realm, both are great games. I absolutely love this game, it's pretty charming in his own way, and I love using my little minions to do evil stuff. Pro tip: if your horde gets wiped out to reequip them go to the arena kill a few things and safely loot the enemy corpses there.
Funnily enough, the thumbnail image is actually a promo for the second game. This comment is now out of date, as the thumbnail was in fact changed at some point
What he means is the term minion is hijacked by those yellow things. Tell a random person the word minion and you know what they will think of 99/100 of the time.
It's amazing how often I play this game and the sequel. Just the idea and feel of playing as a villain controlling an army is so unique, back then and still today. It also helps that the minions are just amazing. I usually try to play the game without losing a single one. Reloading just so I can have them again. They're too cool to die. Edit: I give up on trying to save my minions when I reach the dwarves. Screw them and they're flipping ranged, bombs, drunken, and bullcrap weapons.
I used to be very irritated by losing minions, but eventually I just accepted that it wasn't really possible. Now I throw them in with just enough forethought and usually it winds up keeping more of them alive as a result. Once you get the blues, as long as you don't toss them into splatter enemies, you can save just about all of them if you're careful. Sometimes you need your browns to be geared properly, though. Don't take on the pumpkin patches with poor gear is all I'm saying.
Overlord and Overlord 2, plus Fable 2 and Fable 3, are just my childhood in a bundle I have SUCH unconditional love for them and go back and replayed them at least every other year ! although I feel like no one knows about them anymore, sadly. Although I don't blame them they are definitely dated at this point sadly.
I remember playing overlord way back in the day. This game concept had so much potential and it really nails a nice personality sometimes. Shame they didn't spend more refining the gameplay (and apparently story (I never got far enough to really notice it not being great))
Thanks Mandalore, Overlord is one of my favorites games of all-times Edit: ho, you said it was a bad game and wouldn't recommend-it... now i'm just sad
The game is old... but man is it one hell of a joy to always be smiling at your lil minions doing the work for you. Was really fun, engaging and to me comedic. Bosses were fairly well written and made, I enjoyed those games.
Ah, Overlord! Literally started replaying this a couple of days ago. To me, it feels like a vastly improved pikmin. Overlord 2 especially with it being easily one of the best games for visual representation of the player improving. Such a shame that the Pikmin-like genre only really consists of Little Kings Story, Overlord & Pikmin, two thirds of which are completely dead.
One of my favorite sagas, I played years ago the Wii version and then the 1 and 2 on PC, occasionally I keep remembering how much fun I had with those crazy games. The story is great and quite original, good humor and fun mechanics. Today I keep looking for similar games, I would love a third part, with everything bigger.
I remember the boss needing elemental attacks that only minions could do but all my minions died in the fight... and I believe reloading didn't reload the closest checkpoint so if I wanted to only restart the bossfight I had to die. Which was very hard because I had so much regen upgrades I was pretty much immortal.

If you go to the "official website" it sends you to something very special :) (My guess is that they sold the link)
It's a fucking anomaly and the only reason I know about it is because I'm such a big fan of the series.
Whoops they were talking about Fellowship of Evil. Guess that's how sad it is that I remembered this over it.
After thinking about this and The Darkness 1/2 I would love for there to be a resurgence in the trope of amusing goblin companions that assist you in your further “misdeeds.”

"Redz, Blews, Greeeinz, BrOwnz, you choose ALLLL!" I love this game, is so cheese & clunky but somehow I still rep ay it every year or so.
Ahhhhhh, Overlord, what an amazing series, that I truly love, sadly it is now probably dead after the rightful failure of the abomination of a game "fellowship of evil"
Edit: If you pay attention, you can see the wizard in all of the locations where the bosses are located, he even tells you that it was him who corrupted the heroes.
Can't believe I didn't know that. Where for example?
Uuuuugh. Troll, REEE with me on this.
i'm also interested where is the wizard in the locations
Oh boi... Mandalore review of Chaotic/Lawful evil: the game, I played the hell out of it and I loved it back then.
I would say that's more Overlord 2.

Pikmin, but the game designers played too much 4th Edition DnD.
Hate that dispicable me took overlords whole minion concept and just ruined it.
Overlord had it first
I haven't even watched that, but I hated those minions on first sight.
Uuhhh minion is a generic term for evil underlings
The film Minions is so painfully close to the origin of the minions in Overlord it's weird
Please do me a favor and stop calling games from 2007 "super old".

Ah, Overlord. It's like Evil Pikmin.
Are you saying pikman isn't already evil?
I can't believe it took me this long to make that connection.
maybe more like d&d pikmin?
Overlord 2 is a proper sequel to the DLC, and is actually pretty good
Overlord remains to be my favorite game of my childhood.
I always just use reds to skip the main puzzle and also camp slug-pits. That area is pretty ez to me now tho.

If it helps anything Age of Wonders is pritty much 4x fantasy RPG. In many ways it reminds me of this game.
