0:36 he turns his head away sadly, dabbing his wet eyes with a $100 note from the big pile of cash he made from selling the license to awful cash-in games.
from ages ago but just to say it. Christopher didn't hate the films because they made his father's work into an action movie. its a common misconception. he disliked the idea of making them into film BECAUSE it would make them into action movies. he felt there was so much content, detail, storythreads and such through the books you simply couldn't fit into a movie and it would take away so much of that he saw as magical in the writing and by its nature as a film it would have an overabundance of action. he didn't hate the films he just didn't like the loss of depth from the books.
@@Wildtrexkid Then again, if all the language nerd details of Professor Tolkien was stuffed into the movies, they wouldn't be nearly as good. The movies are perfect as they are, if you want more lore, well, there is MORE THAN ENOUGH for you to read, which is the proper medium for lore. Even Arcanum, a very... lore heavy game, had an 180 page manual to actually put all the lore in because they knew it was too much for the medium of games.
@@toolatetothestory Certainly, they are just different mediums, the films were still made with the Estate and Christopher's acceptance and even with minor alterations to story threads they stayed on the path of the novels and made the LOTR story in Film medium 1 of the best out there. perhaps its more what happened to the Hobbit that Christopher feared, lots of major alterations and strange choices made that somewhat lost the way from the book itself. along with the LOTR series they want to do where the moment Christopher passed they removed the lore keepers from the script team and began major alterations. hopefully the estate can stop too much butchery but cant know until its made
I know you probably don’t even remember making this comment by now, but I gotta let you know that Tom Bombadil shows up in Battle for Middle Earth 2. He’s an insanely powerful and destructive summon that can wipe out armies with OP AoE attacks, all while singing and dancing around as his enemies scream and cower in fear. I actually first saw the Fellowship of the Ring before EVER reading any of the books, or even knowing that Lord of the Rings EXISTED IN THE FIRST PLACE. Then I read the books cover to cover. And proceeded to re-read them voraciously over the next several years. I still have those copies in my bedroom's book case, I need only turn my head from where I'm laying in my bed to see the books.
This is a great review, but it's really made by the background music coming from so many different games. Age of Empires, Age of Mythology, Harry Potter...you are a man of taste.
Holy crap. I am always impressed how one remembers old games as looking amazing and realistic. I remebered this one looking grim, shadowy. Not super high grafics and animations but defined ones. Now I saw it and it was so cartoony that I only recognized it because I remembered the orc slasher animation
Christopher Tolkien just passed and I thought of this video. Here's to hoping he didn't find out about genocidal Gimli and have a stroke. Rest easy Chris. The Undying Lands await.
Oh good. Now we can accelerate the rape campaign to exploit LoTR as yet another tool of Hollywood moral corruption. I mean, even JR Tolkein himself *didn't* say that Sam *didn't* have a hard core anal sex scene with Aragorn's horse. It could have happened. It's fun TV for the whole family!
0:40 it's been years since i played that game and i still have no idea how my team ended up fighting Sauron and killing him...the first time i thought i skipped some cutscene. Also HOLY SHIT someone knows battle realms exist!
The best part about The Third Age is that it retains the fun FFX battle system, the fun setting of the Lord of the Rings with minimally campy acting and characters, and the story. The story entirely revolves around your group trailing the real main characters, cleaning up after their shit, and quietly solving every problem that pops up while getting absolutely zero of the credit for solving them.
It's really not that good, in fact its bad now looking back . For it's time it was great but it's aged like a loaf of bread left out in the open, it's still a classic but a hilariously bad one
You could say the same about F.E.A.R. or Bioshock then because they share similar ratings and came out the same year. It's not THAT bad by any means, the story is nothing short of amazing.
I actually only played Witcher 1 a couple years ago and find it really entertaining. It's not as good as Witcher 3, but it's got a very unique charm and deep mechanics that make it quite a joy to play.
I love this game and I still play it from time to time alone or with friends. It really has a few redeeming qualities. The voiceover, music and charming graphics with some surprising details are some of them. Also I play it for the multiplayer magic. It was one of these few games that never required anything to play multiplayer. Just any local connection would do, and boom you can play with your friends. You'd be surprised how much fun you can have with this game in multiplayer mode. The map editor was also very easy to handle so you could actually make some crazy maps yourself and have a ton of fun with stuff like a battle against 10 balrogs or something. It will always be one of my favorite games for all of the great memories.
This is exactly how I feel about Emperor: Battle For Dune. It was before I ever heard about the book or the movie and I absolutely loved it. I remember playing as House Harkonnen and using underground APCs and just overtaking and selling enemy structures. It’s an incredibly fun RTS.
Omg someone remembers this game!? I tell you, this game was one of my absolute favorites back in the day. That and the Fellowship of the Ring. It was nice playing through book parts and also alternate scenarios. I loved the art style too. The atmosphere was beyond perfect with the music and narration. I want to play it again now, despite how you may have ripped on it. Lol I wish it'd gotten a sequel.
I put well over 750 hours into this game when I was 10-14 yrs old. I couldn't get enough. War of the Ring was the first RTS I played that got me into other RTS games. Honestly wish I had the old disc, but it must have been lost in a move or something. Anyways, great video, man! It was quite nostalgic :)

The brass sections in the evil track made me double-check who composed for this game - it was Lennie Moore, but it has a very similar feel to the music of Lind Erebos (Mikhail Kostylev), a Russian film and video game composer who did the music for rebooted King's Bounty games (Legend, Armored Princess, Warrior of the North, Dark Side) and who also wrote a number of LotR-themed orchestral pieces.
It's important to remember that the non-film related games weren't made by the estate either; they were licensed by them, but made by Vivendi. They had just as much creative freedom over their games as New Line Cinema had with the films. Actually, they might have had more since the games were far from the definitive adaptations of the story.
I went and played this game after I saw your review and it's really great, maybe a bit on the easy side, especially compared to the butchery that is Battle Realm's difficulty level, but it's very enjoyable, especially the evil campaign. Also this game has Tony "Bard's Tale" Jay in it as the evil side narrator, which is fantastic.
Lol I remember The Third Age, the ending was soo confusing cause you went instantly from Fighting the Witch King outside Minas Tirith to fighting the Eye of Sauron on top of the tower.. and I mean instantly after in that you essentially warped there I guess?.. soo jarring.

I remember renting this game in the video store when I was a kid. Even though I had no idea about video games whatsoever, I noticed that this game looked a lot like WCIII. We usually rented games and movies over the weekend, and I remember I really liked the game. I tried to research it a year ago or so but couldn't find it at all. So thanks for these sweet memories.
I'm like 99% sure you're right. I heard it too and had to look it up, but I think it's Charles Dennis who played Durnehviir + Odahviing. The way he says Rohan sounds exactly like how he sounds as Durnehviir.
It's so weird, if you had asked me if I've ever played this game, my answer would be no. But after watching this video, everything I see is super nostalgic and familiar. I must have played this game for months as a kid. I remember the buildings, the units, the slavers... It seems it was more memorable than expected.
It's been years since I've read the books. But I read them before the movies and I remember the books having quite alot of action. How could his son dislike the movies because of action?
Because he's kind of an insecure dick who's own writings never amounted anything. He's literally living off daddy's money. While most of the books were rather quiet and focused more on the consequences of events and the journey itself rather than action, the chapters that WERE action oriented were intense and you could really feel the emotion and desperation of the Men of the West during, say the Battle of Pelennor Fields or how disappointed the Gondorians were when Dol Amroth only sent like 700 men to fight in a battle that, if lost, meant that Sauron would win, because they were scared of the Haradrim and the Umbar raiding their lands. While the lead up chapters were generally somewhat neglected or even outright wrong in the movies, they were still present and important to the overall story. It wasn't just an action flick. It was the literal opposite of say, the Chronicles of Narnia, where actual battles were almost completely skipped over. In Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, the final battle of that book was less than two pages and basically amounted to "Peter almost died but then Aslan showed up out of nowhere and saved everyone's nuts." As a kid who saw the movie first, i was really really disappointed by the book, and it actually turned me off all the Narnia movies because of how different they were from the books.
@@Robocopnik Theres plenty of non action parts in the movies though. And the action parts in the movies are largely also in the books. I mean, I get that they might be more fleshed out in the movies but... Frankly its just bad movie making to have a big action scene and not show it in much detail, ya know? I dont even think thats unfaithful. Its honestly a bit nonsensical, I honestly think theres no possible movie you could have made that would have satisfied him, he'd say the same thing regardless just because it was popular.

0:30 Look, I understand why Tolkien's son might not have liked the Peter Jackson movies (most likely due to so much content being changed, left out, or both) but then I must pose the question: if he (Tolkien's son) had to do a thrilogy of moves based on Lord of the Rings, how would he do it? If he stays 100% faithful to his father's novels, then each of the movies would be five hours long (if not more) and at that point he might as well just make it into a television series instead. But then again, what if he decides to make some changes, what does he change? Which charecters and events does he keep and leave out? Its impossible to make a 100% faithful adaption of a novel, unless you just straight-up make it a TV series. Then you can have as many characters and events as you want because you're not constrained by a time limit (You are, but not in the sense that once the episode is over, that story is over. The story continues into the next episode)
A point has been made a while ago that TV series are way better suited for transferring large novels into an audio-visual medium than feature films. The problem here is that one would be hard pressed to find a talented screenwriter to undertake such an endeavour, especially without significant interference from the likes of Amazon or Netflix producers. So in the end the answer to the question would be meaningless, unless one has a firm understanding which producers are you working with and what are their views.
I remember when you released this review. it honestly feels like it happened yesterday because I was excited that you did this game. But that was 4 years ago now...

Wow I remember this game, but I never got to play it. My brother and I used to share a PC and loved the Battle for Middle earth games. We got War for the Ring one Christmas (or maybe it was a birthday) but the disc chipped as soon as it was removed from the case (it was one of those really stiff disc cases. I'm glad they've stopped making them like that now). Anyway, I didn't get to play it and the store wouldn't let us return it or get a refund. So thanks for the review. sorry for the necrobump on your comment but this is exactly why I wish I had friends that were willing to play long, complex board games like that with me, because hearing stories like yours makes me just a lil bit envious at not having any fun stories or memories like that.

Actually most of the LOTR games have surprisingly been decent-to-good
from ages ago but just to say it.
Allard ACKCHYUALLY

It was better than second one for sure.
When you combined the themes I was astounded, that's some banging music.

I must have played this game for months as a kid. I remember the buildings, the units, the slavers... It seems it was more memorable than expected.
It's been years since I've read the books.
But I read them before the movies and I remember the books having quite alot of action.
How could his son dislike the movies because of action?
Fat Alberto Oh I agree. Still plenty of action though.
There's not that much action. Also, to reduce them to action movies ENTIRELY misses the point of the novels.
Probably pretended to dislike them so he could sell his own "lore-friendly" merchandise like this game
