This is romantic playing at its best.

I was Reading Swaffold, Language of the spirit. He recommended regarding Chopin to begin with Prelude op. 28. I did hearing the preludes once more with Trifonov. I like them very much. I'm so near to me, as I can. I also like them with Sokolov.

Have just listened to Yujia Wang's and S-J Cho's interpretations of this lovely opus (also on You Tube) It might be an interesting interlude for others to compare the three, and wonder at the range of acceptable interpretations available with such compositions, as i do. Enjoy! Cathy

  • @pavelvainberg7769

Why the most of listeners so like to compare and so competitive? Daniil is one of a kind. He has his genuine style and it’s shame to consider him better or worst than other pianists. We just have to enjoy this performance or comprehend from this amazing pianist something new and exciting, that concerns only to Daniil.

Better, I think, than DG's Carnegie Hall Preludes: less edgy and more spaciously recorded. The delicacy of his finger work makes you lean into the keyboard, eyes closed, the way Trifonov does. Is he playing a Fazioli?

In my opinion, he is more successful when he is being thoughtful than when he is being flashy. He tends to play much too fast (because he can), which distorts the music into a near-jumble of notes. But to what end? To prove that he is "better"? It appears to be the "fashion" today! Oh dear! I won't deny he is a genius...

I agree. It's a matter of taste to a certain degree. No 3 and 5 are meaningless to me. I think no 5 has a great melody, but I don't hear it. There must be some deep thoughts here that I don't grasp. But pianistically.....waow!

Unlike Chopin’s other genres, the Préludes I believe are intended to be played as a cycle, and the best performances (e.g. Novaes live at Town Hall) sound that way. In fairness though, later in her career Novaes played selected Préludes. As for Danil, some may be fast and furious but on the whole, remarkable. He reminds me of Gilels - a bravura player most interesting when introspective.

He also creates an amazing cascade effect on the big run of descending chromatic thirds while keeping full clarity in the left hand:

What happened to 17. in A flat major? This prelude was brutalized with a 'out of the chute' break-neck pace. It deserves the same tender care of Tempo rubato that 15. in D flat major ("Raindrop") received! He does recover at 27:32 with attention to the solid repeating bass note and slower tempo to the conclusion. Over all, he does well with most others.

but utterly inferior in touch and feel. The performances here are deeply felt, unique, tempo varied and sensually dynamic. Daniil plays them like he wrote them. Most others do not. Technical purity is second to emotional sensitivity all while his technique is perfect!

@Gloria: I'm sorry but Danil's interpretive skills are so imbued with inappropriate emotional excess, I could wring them out like a wet cloth.
