  • The 1973 Arab-Israeli War, also known as the Yom Kippur War, had a profound impact on Western warfighting doctrine. It was one of the driving forces behind the development of the US's AirLand Battle Doctrine as well as strategic changes within NATO. In recognition of the fiftieth anniversary of the Yom Kippur War, the Modern War Institute at West Point (MWI) brought together a highly experienced expert panel who shared their experiences and observations of that war, and how it applies to the ongoing Hamas/Israel conflict.
Although the panel was initially constituted to identify lessons learned for modern large-scale combat operations on the fiftieth anniversary of the war, panelists oriented their comments toward providing context and analysis of the broader regional security environment in light of Hamas’s October 7 terrorist attacks and Israel’s mobilization.
The panel featured Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Jennings, PhD, an Army strategist and associate professor at the US Army Command and General Staff College; Doctor Kate Tietzen-Wisdom, a historian at the US Army Center of Military History, Doctor Eric Burke, a historian at Army University Press and the Combined Arms Center’s Combat Studies Institute, and Doctor Jacob Stoil, MWI’s chair of applied history and an associate professor of military history at the School of Advanced Military Studies.
