Actually, the first Animal Crossing game you could change your skin tone in was Happy Home Designer for the 3DS!! Followed by Pocket Camp. Not much better, considering they were spin off titles, but still lol.
Regarding what you said at 10:31, the thing is-there are Japanese people with different skin tones!! East Asian beauty standards tend to favor paler skin tones but many people in rural areas or indigenous people have darker skin, but colorism in addition to nationalism make it so that those audiences aren’t recognized, in addition to those globally who may be South/Southeast Asian, Indigenous, or black. It’s really heartbreaking.
@@owlproblem7230 how so? I didn’t write a longass comment about Japanese skin tone representation in AC. Personally, I love that New Horizons has a greater foem of self-expression when it comes to clothing and gender-expression. Because it's optional, you don't have to participate in wearing clothes that are stereotypically worn by members of the opposite sex. That's the beauty of it anyone can wear whatever they want and it allows for a sense of freedom to experiment and just make your character look the way you want it to look without judgement from the other characters. Do I, as a man, wear dresses and have long hair in real life? No. Do I sometimes wear dresses and pick a traditionally feminine hairstyle every now and then because I think its pretty? Absolutely. @@Layorgenla so you are a cross dresser. I don’t think your motivation is that it is “pretty” though. And it’s a bit weird to share this on an animal crossing video, don’t you think?
Oh GOD poor Tortimer. I forgot about that completely. But I do remember them saying kids were being tricked over video games a lot in the mid 00s. I never had any such encounters in AC. Really I think the only thing are some questionable usernames in Mario Kart…
I vividly remember a lot of discussion about Kid Kat on the German Animal Crossing forums because his name was somehow translated to "Petra" in the German versions of Wild World and City Folk. Petra was renamed Pit after CF. This was huge back in the days!
I find it hilarious that the News station was so quick to jump on the ‘all video games are bad and evil’ bandwagon that they didn’t even do any research.
Aw man, peta has always been such a joke. While i can appreciate the message of being mindful of animals and making sure they don't go extinct, these stuns will always ruin it. Interesting video, learned a lot!
I don't share Peta's view on this but I do understand them and I think they've been widely misunderstood They were just pointing out how in a cozy game where almost no violence exists, fishing and capturing was still featured. Like if violence against animals isn't violence. I don't share this opinion but that's the point they're trying to make and sincerely, they are partly right
@@TLuigi003 partly right to try to impose their views on the player base and to ruin something innocent and fun? Some people have too much time and money on their hands. I can’t imagine anything more lame than staging an ANIMAL CROSSING PROTEST for peta. That’s absolutely preposterous

Kapp'n was extremely annoying in City Folk always teasing the player about meeting up with the opposite gender. It would always repeat every single day.
same for new leaf. i changed my character to male because it made me so uncomfortable. (i'm femme non-binary so i usually choose female, but i didn't mind choosing male if it meant i didn't have to deal with that.)
Minor correction in the 10 min mark, there IS a way to change your skin color in previous games, but it's only seen as a "tan" and getting a dark enough tan can give you the desired skin color for your character, however that's an extremely flawed system and nigh offensive way for Nintendo to have tackled that important feature of customization, I guess you know what they say, better late than never, but it was pretty damn late to the party Nintendo... 🙄
And it's only temporary. So the only option is a temporary tan or a mii mask which won't let you wear hats. Honestly there's other things I don't like about new leaf but no one talks about its flaws. Like its the perfect game. It lacks in character customization and its actually more stressful compared to new horizons. Like last night I was debating on if I should play the game or not because I was tired and said. "Its not like anything bad will happen if I don't log in" the next day Butch moved in and crushed all of my perfect pears. Now I have to try and get them the harder way. And if its not that, I have to log in every day or a villager I love will move out without me knowing. Yeah its realistic but sometimes, I don't want realism in a game about you living in a town or on an island with talking animals.
I mean, most of their Japanese media is Japanese centric, maybe mixing some western character types in (like cowgirls in Pokémon Platinum) I feel like we should appreciate that the very closed bordered Japan even did it at all for westerners.
in regards to cat13... what about Jane? In the Japanese version she looked like a racial stereotype, made even worse by the fact that she was a gorilla villager. they had to change her colours for the English release and then never showed up again in future games. But that being said, if cat13 was cut due to looking like a racist stereotype, then why did Jane, a villager that was even worse, make it into the game?
Didn't know what you were talking about and I looked it up...how are people upset over a scrapped character than a character that was actually put into the game
I was really upset when I first found out how Jane actually looked like in the Japanese Animal Crossings. I had Jane in my town as a kid and I loved her so much. I loved her purple and rainbow shirt:(

You did make an error in this video but its like... really minor. I never played it so I'm going by the wiki but apparently Happy Home Designer had skin tones meaning its been an option in the franchise since 2015. Even assuming Nookipedia is full of beans I do know the Animal Crossing Pocket Camp had them well before New Horizons came out so that's a 2017 title in the franchise with them. That said New Horizon was the first MAINLINE entry to have them so it is easy to miss this aspect of Animal Crossing's history with representation.
It has animal crossing in the name, just aren't mainline games. Also it's called super mario bros 2, meanjng it's apart of the super mario series. @@brogamin179
The whole Pokémon Jynx thing is an unfortunate case of a benign design being misconstrued overseas, due to cultural differences - in Nintendo's home of Japan, it's based off a yokai, a Japanese demon, while also having traits of a Japanese fashion trend that occurred around that time. Of course, America did not know about either yokai or Japanese fashion trends, so it makes sense they'd see it completely differently.
in animal crossing game cube, if you had a GBA and link cable for the island, you -technically- could stand in the sun a long time and become tan, but it would fade back to the default tone later. i'm glad they added more skin tones now, though

Jynx was based on the Japanese fashion trend Ganguro, which is "an alternative fashion trend of blonde, pink or silver hair and tanned skin among young Japanese women that peaked in popularity around the year 2000". It had nothing to do with race or anything offensive.
yes but most westerns wouldn't have that knowledge and interpreted the design as a racist sterotype. its obvious that there were no ill intentions there but it still made people uncomfortable
It's annoying how people call out racism just because of their ignorance and instead of cultivating themselves, they just make a drama of this and it get censored That reminds me one of Pokemon's card who got censored because they were a swastika on it, they removed it because for a stupid western basic bitch it's a n*zi cross : It's not, n*zi cross is an INVERTED swatiska, swastika is one of the oldest symbol of humanity that you can find in a lot of cultures and always associated with peace and balance Honestly as a mixed raced person, people who view Jinx as a black person is the one who is racist
I hate when people say that the player character’s in Japanese games are white. It’s stylized, just like how a lot of anime characters look white. They’re Asian. It’s not a racially insensitive thing, it’s that they are designing something meant to connect within the country on a ground level. As such, only more recently are we getting an option for other skin tones and hair types. Look at Pokémon. There are two light skinned options and two dark skinned options in x/y. One light skin with blonde hair and blue eyes, stereotypical white, one with dark eyes and black hair, stereotypical Asian.

Japan still has a huge problem with racism, colorism and xenophobia. While i’m glad game devs like Nintendo are finally trying to let players better customize themselves by removing gender options, adding more skintones and giving us diverse characters to interact with in their other games (for example, Marina and Frye from Splatoon) it’s still a shame it took long enough. Western games have had these options for longer, despite our still obvious racism, but the gaming industry is dominated by Japanese companies with people who believe in a beauty standard and do things with complete oversight. I feel they knew what they were doing when they made blackface characters, which is a shame. Japanese people see these things as a joke or sometimes cute. I’m glad they haven’t really done anything like this since then, but the fact it took until New Horizons, the fifth mainline Animal Crossing, to get poc/black friendly hairstyles and more than one skintone (other than tanning, which is insensitive, takes a while to achieve, and fades away in five days) is rather annoying… Because tan east asian people exist too! Plus, their options are still limited. Some black people complain of having the same few types of hairstyles in games and Nintendo continued this stereotype of pretty much giving black players four options while players with straight hair get the rest. The titular afro (and afro buns), shave and locs. Not all black people have these hairstyles and I have friends who feel left out by the lack of options for their hairstyles and hair textures. :(
The news channel that you provided evidence from was from a small town in Missouri... Small town people be wild sometimes and they try to get more views, so yeah. I came from a small community and it can be wild with one mind nature.
Peta thing doesn't surprise me given they have had issues with Games Workshop for their use of animal pelts on their models (plastic animal furs). Peta will use any excuse to try get attention.
I personally think the gender thing just isn't that big of a deal. Back when the earlier games came out most people didn't care about that sort of thing. And I think the people who make a big deal about it in New Horizons are kind of ridiculous. Or, should I say, silly. Getting so worked up over being able to wear a dress or have a perm in a cute little video game, no matter what side of the argument you're on, is kind of silly. Though, that's just my opinion of course. Edited for clarity.
I honestly think people are just so discontent, they’re just gonna keep fussing about whatever lame excuse they can think of… even if it was already resolved
3DS game AC New Leaf had a creep use the new Swap Note feature not in thd 3DS but in the game I call it the green letter which spams notes unless you manually turn it off. However this creep drawed something inappropriate and a girl saw it which got attention from Nintendo to shut the Online off and make it cost for a fee with ID. No joke this actually happened and now we can't play online for free thanks to this creep.
When it comes to the last point in the video about how Animal Crossing is now all "gender neutral" I don't really like it... That doesn't make me homophobic, not everyone has to like it but I can see it as a good thing but me personally I miss the interactions where the characters would recognise me as a cute feminine character cos that reflects me IRL... I feel future instalments should have the option during start game on whether you want this or not and whether say you're like male but identify as "feminine" and vice versa
While I understand why it’s included in the game, this is a good, level-headed criticism with a decent solution proposed and doesn’t come off as homophobic. Hats off to you for that.
@@moonamoonz I do respect people who are nonbinary and or prefer going by "they/them" but it's kinda wrong to force it on everyone...? Ppl should be able to identify as whatever they want imo...
While I disagree with your opinion (I am v feminine and cisgen female for context), I can understand where you’re coming from. I do like the idea of having those options of picking fem/masc/neither, the series has become less niche with every game made and I believe the devs just wanted to be safe and make things easy, so they used a gender neutral pronoun as gender is flexible and it’d be horrible to restart for those unsure. I had to restart my island that got me through the pandemic due to it using a name I no longer go by. So, I feel they need to tackle something as simple as name changing your character and town/island first. I’m glad I was able to restart as it was apart of a healing process to put the traumas I faced during those times behind me, but sometimes you just wanna change the island/town name cuz you decided to go with a different vibe than intended or something. I just want everyone to enjoy this game series that has brought me so much comfort and joy over the years since New Leaf. We both love the games and they are inclusive towards us gender-wise but it’s important to remember the more our…population grows 😉 …the more it’s important to adjust a few things. I like that we have more clothing options, but I heavily dislike that your character has no gender at all. They let you "select" one, yet you're only ever referred to as "they". I disagree with "gender identity", but that's not very inclusive of Nintendo if that's what they're going for.
I think its a fine way of going about it, they don’t wanna get lambasted for providing a pronoun slider or a non binary option, but they still wanna be inclusive
07:08 - I'm pretty sure CAT13 wasn't supposed to be a "blackface" character. Given the blonde hair, pink lips, dark fur, and somewhat flashy outfit, I'd say she was supposed to mirror the *"Ganguro"* fashion style. Just sayin', not everything is racially motivated.
6:57 The irony of "criticized for lacking cultural inclusivity and missing the mark for racial inclusivity" when the west themselves did not bother to tick both boxes when criticizing Jinx's design. Jinx was based off a Japanese cultural trend, and yet western people couldn't take that into account and claimed it was blackface and accused Nintendo of racism instead of doing their own research as well. A Japanese game doesn't have to cater to western audiences. That's for the devs to decide.

personally, the gender issue in animal crossing seems so bizzare to me. Like, I was playing AC when I was 6 and most of us werent talking about gender like how we are now. I also just think it is bizzare because having an gender ambiguos or queer character is mostly indie game territory as of now. Unless this was an outdated problem that only nintendo was doing, then yeah it would be weird, but no. there is only a handful of games that address this and to make a big deal out of one game out of thousands not following these 10 or 20 indie games is dramatic.
I'm a new leafer still and haven't played new horizons yet (though i have played the og and wild world). Does it still have the opening sequence with rover or something similar to determine a base appearence or does it straight up give you costumizable options?? I'm agender myself and although i Hate having to pick genders in games i still really liked the rover part of the game hjkhkjhjkfgjgjk idk. i found it immersive. It's definitely a great addition though, don't get me wrong. Im just curious, is all.
It has something similar with Timmy and Tommy, but they just straight up tell you to tell them about yourself and stuff, the only thing determined by a random question is the airport's color
It has a choose your style thing, but when 3rd person pronouns are they/them. No features restricted by style, but people who choose the "masculine" option will have a *slightly* deeper voice than people who choose the "feminine" option.
I'm gonna be honest, i really dont think trans characters or gender ideology should be in kids games. I say this because kids are influenced easily, a boy seeing a man saying he is a woman is confusing even for adults. And i think is stupid how New Horizons removed gender off the game. There is still women and men in the world, like it or not.
New Horizons didn't remove gender. You can identity however you want in it. Also the game isn't just for kids, it's for everyone no matter their age. Most of the fanbase is teens and adults. It's also important for kids to learn that trans people do exist
you can still be a man or a woman in ac. they didn't take that away. you just don't specifically pick one or the other, you just make your character how you want them to look and dress them how you want its as simple as that. most kids aren't going to think twice about this. its not gender ideology, you're thinking too much into it
i kinda agree with you, i see a lot of kids nowadays who dont really understand what being trans actually means and think maybe it just means “oh im a girl and i like sports i must be transmasc” when its not actually that and then start to identify as the opposite gender but then just feel kinda weird and get bullied, i think gender identity is something people should learn around the age of post-teenager or something but i think there should be characters that are like girls and like more “boyish” things and boys who like “girly” things because kids should know that they are completeky normal if theyre a girl who likes sports or a boy who likes fashion i think all genders can be interested in anything and there isnt a hobby just exclusive to one gender
The spacebun hairstyle was not that big of a deal. It was 2020, and people were scared, frustrated, and needed an outlet. That does not, however, account for people blurting out racist remarks to "protect" the space buns. It's a game, and that time really uncovered a lot of racist people.
Most kids wouldn't have thought Jynx was a racially insensitive. But only because they would have never connected that. Jynx was racial styrotype. Cuz to them jynx is just a pokemon. And we would have doubted it was supposed to be black face. But of course they were doing their own culture and not trying to take from American culture or other controversy in America. But they still got the flack for it anyway
Yeah, Jynx isn't really racist, it's just based off on so many different things like so many other Gen 1 Pokemon are and it's understandable on why Nintendo did make her purple, wouldn't want your biggest cashcow to lose revenue from parents all across America

You’re just mad because you are American and you’ll never be as fair as me (a Chinese) because you cross with Africans, you see. Therefore the colour in the end is not very nice. Sort of like a poop when it sits inside the bowl for too long (do you have toilets in Pooperica?)
@@owlproblem7230 how so? I’m not the one getting upset about skin tone and writing long comments about it.
Absolutely. It's brilliant!

Kapp'n was extremely annoying in City Folk always teasing the player about meeting up with the opposite gender. It would always repeat every single day.
The way he flirted with the player if you were a female character was really weird since it's implied that you are a kid
same for new leaf. i changed my character to male because it made me so uncomfortable. (i'm femme non-binary so i usually choose female, but i didn't mind choosing male if it meant i didn't have to deal with that.)
I just remember thinking that Kapp'n's dialogue was really boring and just mashed the A button until it was done.
And in new leaf. Asking if I had a boyfriend. I'm surprised he was brought back knowing how characters from other media got cancelled hard.
I never played this one. how did this work? like when you went to the city you had to talk to him? what did he say? sorry for all the questions
I mean, most of their Japanese media is Japanese centric, maybe mixing some western character types in (like cowgirls in Pokémon Platinum)

in regards to cat13... what about Jane? In the Japanese version she looked like a racial stereotype, made even worse by the fact that she was a gorilla villager. they had to change her colours for the English release and then never showed up again in future games. But that being said, if cat13 was cut due to looking like a racist stereotype, then why did Jane, a villager that was even worse, make it into the game?

The whole Pokémon Jynx thing is an unfortunate case of a benign design being misconstrued overseas, due to cultural differences - in Nintendo's home of Japan, it's based off a yokai, a Japanese demon, while also having traits of a Japanese fashion trend that occurred around that time.
Of course, America did not know about either yokai or Japanese fashion trends, so it makes sense they'd see it completely differently.

It's annoying how people call out racism just because of their ignorance and instead of cultivating themselves, they just make a drama of this and it get censored
That reminds me one of Pokemon's card who got censored because they were a swastika on it, they removed it because for a stupid western basic bitch it's a n*zi cross : It's not, n*zi cross is an INVERTED swatiska, swastika is one of the oldest symbol of humanity that you can find in a lot of cultures and always associated with peace and balance

I hate when people say that the player character’s in Japanese games are white. It’s stylized, just like how a lot of anime characters look white. They’re Asian. As such, only more recently are we getting an option for other skin tones and hair types. Look at Pokémon. There are two light skinned options and two dark skinned options in x/y.

And I think the people who make a big deal about it in New Horizons are kind of ridiculous. Or, should I say, silly.

There is still women and men in the world, like it or not.
New Horizons didn't remove gender. You can identity however you want in it. Also the game isn't just for kids, it's for everyone no matter their age. Most of the fanbase is teens and adults.
