This is honestly my favorite era of graphics. The tech was high end enough to allow for great, although somewhat simple aesthetics, while naturally being limited by the technology of the time. I feel like once we hit 7th gen although still great graphics start to bite off more than they can chew and end up in an “uncanny valley” of sorts where it looks realistic but not realistic enough, which is where we still are today.
Wild, congrats to MAME! I have an extremely old copy of MAME, it's like version 0.087 or something. From mid-late 90's, but if I want to play those games, I still use it... It's from the time when my dad downloaded emulators for us kids when we were very young. RIP Emux! EDIT: Decided to plug in the old External HD, and checked out the information. Mame version : 0.28.2 Date: 10/21/1997.
@@drewba7741 Yeah, it's pretty wild. Dad downloaded a bunch of games for a few different emulators for us. MAME for the arcades stuff, then we had "KGEN98" which was a Sega Genesis emulator which I Believe didn't on win7 and onward, and an NES Emulator, which I'm not too sure of. There were many days with my brother on the KGEN98, it's a very core memory for me.
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah, it's wild. I remember seeing newer MAME versions a few years ago thinking "damn the UI definitely improved." MAME is truly amazing. Have you posted in their forums about your hardware? I'm sure someone must know something. I am also truly amazed at how much original arcade boards you have. I always wanted to own a few arcade machines but I didn't even know that was a real thing until much later in my life. I always assumed it was out of consumers hands, not sure why.
Is there a watchdog circuit on Arcade M2 HW? If you're stuck in a boot loop and got an oscope thats the first thing Id check is if you have an actual clock
The performance issue I suspect is just a result of the development process. When ever I did coding it was always a case of, make sure you can actually do the thing before you start to worry about performance. No point trying to optimize for speed if you cannot even get an finished result out. Consider this the programmer equivalent of Ernest Hemingway's "Write drunk, edit sober". "Code for results, optimize later". Also, maximum kudos to all the folks that work on emulating these obscure machines. While there are many that work on home consoles, these obscure machines are the ones that risk disappearing without many people noticing. EDIT : Also I would vote for Fightin Biden, dudes got some moves and that old time Chinese swag!
I had no idea the M2 was this powerful, the preview screenshots in the magazines back in the day didnt look this good! Looks slightly more powerful and detailed than Model 2 but less than model 3 is that right?
Here's hoping improvements to Soul Calibur in MAME follow this! The Dreamcast version may be the definitive way to play SC but I'm fond of the original arcade version. I vividly remember stepping into the arcade and seeing it for the first time in 1998, absolutely breathtaking.
A fantastic game with realistic martial arts movements. We need this and Hyper Neogeo 64 games to work properly, since the merge of MAME with the MESS, the arcade games progress slowed down alot unfortunately.
Never seen much of this hardware. It's definitely not up there with Sega's Model 3, it's more comparable to Model 2, but compared to anything else at the time, these would have been very good graphics. The way it renders everything looks like a massively beefed up PSX, like if you were to overclock a PSX to 150MHz and give it 8MB RAM + Z buffer + texture filtering. Although that PSX-like rendering does make it look a little janky compared to the gorgeous Model 3 aesthetic (or Model 2 for that matter).
nice, your video always confuse me for a second lol, cause its about the build that came in the beginning of the month and we are very soon gonna have the next mame version.
Mame 0.272 was released on November 30th... As usual, one month after the fact, VGE wakes up. And still zero news of the CRT beam simulation from Mr "So much fun on my pvm"... What a joke.
Funny when you can just buy the Real Hardware play NORMAL or acquire a POLYMEGA ........Get a Retro TNK select the unit from the list boom current TV ready to go Problem Solved... Janky Old Software its been updated poorly still stupid Janky.. Use Arch.. MAME need allot of work.. Keep Playing and Crushing..
The hair rendering in this game has less artifacts than modern Unreal Engine 5 titles, while predating Unreal Engine 1.
It was very visually impressive. Sadly it failed in arcades

Haha I just want to know how you’ve never upgraded
how do you enable and get those overclock settings to appear in mame at 3:21?
Gotta download the cheat zip
thats amazing you have the actual old board. game looks really good. i dont really remember it but i did not play all the fighting games.
I’m working on the board over the holidays. New oscilloscope to help. I’ll be shooting it for a video too
@@VideoGameEsoterica that's really neat man. good luck with the repair.
Is so sad when arcades with obscure hardware become obscure games, someone put their soul not only into the game but also the hardware
Yes it’s hard because the board runs two games total and one also runs on a diff board which emulates well
@@VideoGameEsoterica Have any of the recent mame changes improved thrill drive?
Haven’t tested yet
I'm immensely grateful to MAME devs, but I will really pop the bottle only when they will fix Virtua Fighter and Daytona USA!
I’m sure it’ll happen
Is it me, or does this game have some strange resemblance to the virtual fighter?
Oh absolutely has some VF vibes
Does the shadows layering problem exist in the original game?
No. That’s just the GPU board and WIP emulation
Will it improve Fighting Layer in some aspects? I’m not talking about the game itself but something like the performance and textures.
No. That’s PSX based

They know I have the board :) now if I can just get the damn thing working
Isn't there any information for these changes in the mame info dat?
There are some updates on PowerPC
Is there a watchdog circuit on Arcade M2 HW? If you're stuck in a boot loop and got an oscope thats the first thing Id check is if you have an actual clock
Doing exactly that over the holidays
@@VideoGameEsoterica Hope you can fix it!
Me too. Me toooo. It’s my white whale repair
what CPU are you emulating with?
i9 12900K
did it improve Over Drive emulation ?
Get out of here 🤣
please share name of all bios=files to run this game.
Just the zip and CHD is needed
@@VideoGameEsoterica thanks, this is amazing! hope we getting patch to speed up things a little~
I’m sure it’ll happen eventually
MAME (typically) releases on the last Wednesday of every month. 0.272 was the end of November. We should have already had 0.273 by now.
I beleave they usually skip december
family time more important than arcade time
Well it’s the holiday so they can take a break haha
Def worth it :)
With the exception of last year, they've released a new version at the end of every December since 2013.
Someone should make a specific emulator for Namco, just like there are for Sega Model 2 and 3.
I think the era for specific emulators is over minus Model 3
Mame 0.272 or Mame 0.273?
.272
lots of 3d titles under MAME doing great wonders
monitoring MAME for improves on this game as well as Hyper Neo Geo 64 games
did MK4 emulation ever improve?
MAME for 3D has come a long way in recent years
Not sure on that one.
in all this years I still did not understand where to find a proper romset and if it’s legit to use or not 🤷🏻♂️
I can’t exactly help with that here haha. Wish I could

This is Cobra, not M2
Nice! Last time I tried this game didnt work at all. Hopefully it gets up to full speed someday.
I bet in the next few years it’s full speed
Wrong video description? Not a lot of Time Crisis here.
Yes it was a holiday based copy and paste error haha
Specs?
I9 12900K
@ beast. Enjoy!
hopefully this one and battle tryst become playable.
a mame dev on reddit told me last month he's going to look into them .
It’s def hardware that I’ve heard will be getting looked at more soon

wow didnt see this game before and on Cobra.. interestin.
Not many people know about it

Hyper runs well. Just has sound issue. So that’s a good start!
Only 100 of those boards. Man that’s a small amount
And about only six are still known to exist. I have one. It is a brick
According to the description, Namco System 23? Double score! Who doesn't love Time Crisis 2?
Copy and paste and meant to remove that
@@VideoGameEsoterica Wait, so MAME already supports the System 23?

It gets very close to Model 3

So you're saying that MAME no longer maims this game!
🤣 go to your room

I do enjoy the MAME stuff
I still can't play Samurai Shodown 64 on MAME :(
It works. What’s not working for you?
Fixed games hyper neogeo 64
Hyper keeps getting better
mames for pang and shock troopers and such... if its a 3d then i rather play modern more refined similars
