I have a Stauer wrist watch and had it for about 15 years. Love it. Bought it new and a winder. Winder died after a couple years. I wear it occasionally and after it died, realized it was easier to reset the watch. Used the winder to store watch but recently noticed the holder that holds the watch started deteriorating and got sticky. Threw that part out. Keep watch int the winder box.
I made mine, a Poor man's version: attach a long strong string or twine to ceiling with a carbiner attached to the other end. Any other secure hook will do. Close the strap buckle and attach to the hook end. Now swing it like a pendulum and it will wind up your automatic watch. I experimented with my watch Winder pendulum. Normally, about 5 full swings fully winds up my Seiko with the specified 37 hour reserve.
I made my own as well, but fully automatic and high capacity: It's basically a tupperware container attached to a long piece of string, like you do, but I keep it hanging from the clothesline outside. When it blows, which is always around here, it swings around and winds my watches. It can take as many watches as I can fit in the container.
1:57 Any automatic watch that has a screw-down crown and is worn infrequently (i.e. beyond the duration of mainspring reserve power should be paired with a watch winder. The reason goes beyond the hassles of resetting the date on a no- quickset date movement of the older GMT Masters. The threads on a screw-down crown and the tube can quickly wear out. Replacing that tube (or worse still along with a new crown) can be very expensive if you happen to own a Rolex. Much cheaper to buy a watch winder!
Nice video, Brian. I wouldn't need a winder with that PP rotor. Would just bring it with me so I could spin it around all day. High-class fidget spinner.
Great video, just like to say that you don't have to spend a lot on winders, I have three ,one for my son; all from Floureon a chinese company and an average price of $40 usd!!! All have worked perfectly well and reasonably quiet for over two years; also on a timer for 12 hours per day whilst my solar panels are making the power- so no cost. No problems so far; so before you go and buy one of these $250 usd. upwards cost models try the cheaper one ,it can save you money.
I don't have many watches. Only a battery powered one for daily life and a "smart" one for workout. I am tired of changing the battery every two years so I was thinking about switching to an automatic one. But your video showed me that they have their own hassle as well. Thank you very much for the video.
I started using Citizen Eco-Watches when I realized I’d paid more for watch replacements than for the original watch. Faces are light sponges, any light. Been very happy with their perpetual chronographs. Have three, two tanks and a black round diver. Always correct date, can auto switch between two time zones, alarms, and good looking. 9 mo power reserve, I just leave them near a window sill for some light when not wearing. Bought the first 17 years ago, has kept perfect time since day one, never opened for any reason. Others more recent, same reliability.
there is no hassle. its just things that people overthink. for instance, they say you should have a watch winder... not really. did they have tons of watch winders at the store you bought the watch from? the answer is no. the trick is to have it stop at a convenient time for you. for instance when it lose power and stops and you decided not to wear it. just move it a bit so the watch starts again. do it little by little until it stops on a time thats convenient for you. for me, i make it stop at "8:30"ish... becuse at any given day im already awake that time and if i decide to use the watch, ill just move it when its on the exact time when it stopped. i dont even bother with day/date.. so there. no need to open the watch if you dilo it that way
I have several watch winders by Orbita and by Wolf. I've had some cheap/inexpensive units near the beginning of my watch journey but they all died after a year or two. Wolf and Orbita winders both work well and are nearly silent. I would caution - do not keep them in your bedroom. No matter what the sales person or ad says, you will hear them in the middle of the night.
Rolex actually incorporated a quick date adjust feature in many of their 70's and 80's watches (vintage in today's lingo). I know this works on their day-datejust models, but not sure on the GMT you own. 1. advance the hour hand to 11:59 pm i.e., right before the date changes. 2. advance the time to 2 am, which causes the date to change. 3. Now reverse the time back past 12 midnight to 11 pm (the date should not have reverted, just the time). Now advance the time past 12 midnight again which causes the date to advance again.......repeat until you get the proper date. On day-datejust watch this only works for the date not the day so you must carefully choreograph both the day and the date to get it right.
I also recommend Wolf winder, I have the Wolf Roadster Module Single Watch Winder with 3 watch Storage, black pleather outside and a black and brown wood finish display inside, I’ve had mine for over 4 years now runs daily with no problems(KNOCK ON WOOD). Sure it keeps my automatics running with the correct time & date which I can set on my own, but I also love it for the display factor, I am contemplating getting another one🙏🏾😌Be Safe;-).
Welcome back, Chief. I've been anxiously waiting and was stoked to see that notification! Definitely going to look at one if I ever get a GMT or something that's a hassle to wind. Great as always
I have been told by my Rolex guy and others who collect far more expensive watches than I do, that its bad for the watch to leave it in a not-running state for too long. The oils will move and stiffen etc leaving you with a watch that actually needs to be serviced far more often than normal.
Hello ! A good watch winder is pretty high in price, after watching this video I understand that most of what is available for sale on Amazon it's trash, don't waist your money on a watch winder if it's under $100.00, the Barrington is $250.00, Wolf price range $500-$600 woow !! I recently purchased my first new good automatic watch it's a Tag Heuer, so I believe I certainly need at least one single watch winder.
I have Vostoks with a date complication. To change the date when I use a watch, I have to wind it to 1am, then back to 9am can be annoying, but no big deal. I don't use a watch winder because I prefer my watch to stop when I don't use them.

I have two an expensive one and a cheap one I picked up on Amazon. Since I have retired I use them less because like the made said it nice to interact with my collection.(6) and I have the time. When I worked and traveled I found them useful. But I'm reminder of something a great Watch Expert said. When your watch is on the winder the winder is enjoying your watch not you. The winder is wearing out your watch. Modern watched can sit awhile not running it does them no harm.
I use a very cool and low cost feichongho swinging winder. I'm an old guy, and don't swing my arms enough to keep my Invicta pro diver automatic wound. Would not work for many because it can only be set to run for up to 12 hours. Needs to be restarted after that.
When you have 9 automatic watches you must have winders. When the power goes out and my winders stop, its misery resetting the watches and getting the dates set correctly. Get the Fuzzy Logic chip, everything is automatic. you set it (on) and you forget it. Works perfectly.
I bought a new manual Rolex in 1968. Cost $83 - then, 2 weeks average wage for a 19yo. The case lasted almost 40 years & it eventually needed re-sleeping of the winder cavity or whatever watchmakers call it. Same watch today & the winder is much more difficult to screw into the case to make it waterproof. Now made to wear the case much more quickly?
amazing that the vintage gmt's don't have the quick hour set like on an explorer 2, the price you pay for vintage i suppose, beautiful watch nonetheless
I might be a little bit late to comment on this video, but i have the very same rolex GMT and i can confimr it's a pain to set up the date every time... in fact i sometime wait to wear it so that the actual date is closer to the one the watch last displayed when it stopped...!
One should not be needing one but I also have a dress watch with a moon face etc. and it’s not one of my daily watches so to be honest I will properly look for one soon
Thanks for the video, really nice. I was still interested in how loud such a watch winder is. I imagine that some people like to put that thing also on the dresser in the bedroom. The only question is, if you hear noises the whole night when the watch winder runs...
For what’s its worth, I’ve heard from several watchmakers and repairers that watch winders are a really, really BAD idea! They overwind the mechanism, stress the hairspring and add unnecessary wear and tear to your movement meaning more frequent servicing WILL be required. So my eight piece winder now sits silent and motionless as a display case for my watches! Take heed gentlemen....and ladies!
The overwinding MAY be an issue for much older watches but almost all automatic winding mechanisms have a slip 'clutch' on the mainspring that prevents overwinding.
If you find you need a watch winder then you might be better off without an automatic.. that's just my opinion. Like having a 3 litre diesel car and only doing very short cold journeys and having to take it to the garage every month because the dpf is always blocked... sorry but that's the only analogy I can come up with 👍👍👍
It is generally a bad idea to use a watch winder because it keeps your automatic watch running the whole time which produces wear on the whole delicate mechanism. It's like keeping your car engine running the whole time. It's better to let it rest when you're not planning to use after 2 days. Modern watches nowadays use synthetic oil which does not dry up like decades ago. A watch winder is only recommended in case you have an automatic watch with lots of complications which are time consuming in case it stops and has to be set again.
@@arnofrom9350 definitely not, the tiny wheels and other parts of the movement are much more delicate. Important is that you never screw the crown in completely with force because you will ruin the seals.
Thanks a lot, this is honest and useful information, was just about to spend money on something not necessary and then ven harmful. I have a automatic watch with date, so not overcomplicated to set. It has a 5 day power reserve so that helps as well. Thanks!
if the watch is worn only couple of times per year, will not having a winder be detrimental to the watch ? would you say that it may or will it definitely help if a winder is used ? thank you.
Would this be suitable for vintage watches, especially for Seiko Panda Chronograph 6138-8020 and Citizen Bullhead Octogonal Chronograph) if so what modes is suitable for them
I had a few Wolfs and they seem to be programmed to fail AFTER they warranty expires. I use a Doubletree now, made in china but still runs after 5 years and yes I too use it for my Pepsi can GMT II
Euhm... is it not possible to advance the date more quickly on your GMT by going back (to approx 9 pm) and forward through 12 (midnight) several times? It works on my 50’s Universal Geneve. That way at least, you don’t need to run through 24 hours 😳
If you had the winder set to Bidirectional on 650 turns per day, does this turn 650 times each way or 325 times clock wise and 325 times counterclockwise? Thanks
Hi. Nice video. I have Rolex 16610. Around 2008 mod. But i only use it in weekends. So it can take a week or sometimes more when i use it again. Should i consider winder? I hope my watch dont get problems because how i use. Because i have to set time and date and wind every week.
would watch winder puts more stress in the watch mechanism? let say i wear a watch only 2 days a week only. would it be better if i wind my watch from dead stop or have a winder keeps the watch going, so it will be less wear on the crown and gasket?
All automatic watches should be handwindable as well. Soon the 7s26 seiko watch movements which can't be handwound will (hopefully) be phased out. I have to shake my Shaiko 5 otherwise it just stops. My Seagull Ocean Star can be handwound and has a long power reserve as well. Come on Seiko you need a shake up.
I have owned a BARRINGTON watch winder for the last 4yrs and found its reliability wanting to say the least, today it stopped working completely and as it's 4yrs old I took it apart and found the cause of the problem to be the small motor (rf-500tb-12560) which is the heart of the winder. I was surprised to find that I can buy this part on ebay for less than £3.00! Winders really are a rip-off, you pay a lot of money for something that essentially is just full of cheap rubbish parts as is the case with BARRINGTON. 😡🤬
Hey Brian.. bought my first automatic a couple of weeks back.. its not used as a daily and used only when I go out.. thus not worn that often.. so my question is it ok not to winde it all the time.. how often should I winde it? (it's got a 38 hour power reserve)
Is there any risks in winding your automatic watches for example every morning (excluding that one piece you are putting on your wrist)? For me it isn't a problem to wind watches every morning but if that can cause harm to the movements, I should maybe buy a winder.
For me i don't need a watch winder.. You will have to set the time after 1 week or 2, it will be late or advance for 1 minute or more.. & putting the watch into stop will prevent frictions & wearing out of the parts inside while you are not using it.. the more watches you have, the more you do not really need watch winder because it will preserve the watch from wearing out when you are not using it for weeks..
got myself 2 gold rolex when i got back from service in vietnam. sold them both for a hit of dope 2 years later. i live everyday with a cloud of regret over my head. can't take em to the grave with ya though. onwards & upwards.
Can you overwind a watch? I don't wear my Breitling every day and it stops if I don't wear ir daily. So I bought a watch winder and it's turning 2 minutes and pause for 6 min. Then it turns the opposite side 2 min and so on. I got confused how long the watch should stay in a winder those days when I'm not wearing it? Thank You in advance! :)
I do not mind winding one of my watches, when I decide to wear it. However, I have a few dive watches and I hate the idea of unscrewing and screwing in the crown all the time. There must be some wear and tear from that!? Thanks. Nice video.
I just get my butler to strap my Rolex to his wrist while he washes the Bugatti.
He may scratch both your watch and your car , lol

Modern watches nowadays use synthetic oil which does not dry up like decades ago.
A watch winder is only recommended in case you have an automatic watch with lots of complications which are time consuming in case it stops and has to be set again.
What about screwing in and out the crown each time; is this not more harmfull?
@@arnofrom9350 definitely not, the tiny wheels and other parts of the movement are much more delicate. Important is that you never screw the crown in completely with force because you will ruin the seals.
Thanks a lot, this is honest and useful information, was just about to spend money on something not necessary and then ven harmful. I have a automatic watch with date, so not overcomplicated to set. It has a 5 day power reserve so that helps as well. Thanks!
Thinking about buying a Tissot sea star 1000 powermatic 80
if the watch is worn only couple of times per year, will not having a winder be detrimental to the watch ? would you say that it may or will it definitely help if a winder is used ? thank you.
some watches without quik set can be set by cycling between 9 and 12 0clock , instead of going the whole way around the 24 hrs
Thank you
you can move the hour hands only on the gmt as a pseudo quick set.
Not on a 1675.
I caved and bought a Wolf 8 timepiece winder.
Hi mate nice vid. Do i need watch winder for my tag heuer aquaracer calibre 5 automatic? Cheers
anyone knows the brand of the first watch that appears in the video? Such a cool back plate spinning...-
Patek 5711
Euhm... is it not possible to advance the date more quickly on your GMT by going back (to approx 9 pm) and forward through 12 (midnight) several times? It works on my 50’s Universal Geneve. That way at least, you don’t need to run through 24 hours 😳
That's a big negative.
Because i have to set time and date and wind every week.
would watch winder puts more stress in the watch mechanism? let say i wear a watch only 2 days a week only. would it be better if i wind my watch from dead stop or have a winder keeps the watch going, so it will be less wear on the crown and gasket?
doing a good job
All automatic watches should be handwindable as well.
Soon the 7s26 seiko watch movements which can't be handwound will (hopefully) be phased out.
I have to shake my Shaiko 5 otherwise it just stops.
My Seagull Ocean Star can be handwound and has a long power reserve as well.
Come on Seiko you need a shake up.
Yes to do
I just purchased a used wolf watch winder off of ebay. Where can I find a cheap(not the original) a/c adapter so I don't have to just use D batteries?
Major benefit is convience.
Thats how the real world works. you dont only pay for the product but also the time the took to make it and you afcours get scammed an little bit to.
Hey Brian.. bought my first automatic a couple of weeks back.. its not used as a daily and used only when I go out.. thus not worn that often..
so my question is it ok not to winde it all the time.. how often should I winde it? (it's got a 38 hour power reserve)
Anyone else here from the horology talk facebook group?? This was yesterdays big discussion..
great video, pretty stupid of rolex about the date thing lol
Is there any risks in winding your automatic watches for example every morning (excluding that one piece you are putting on your wrist)? For me it isn't a problem to wind watches every morning but if that can cause harm to the movements, I should maybe buy a winder.
it might put wear on the stem seals or even the stem or case .
What watch were you wearing in this video?
got myself 2 gold rolex when i got back from service in vietnam. sold them both for a hit of dope 2 years later. i live everyday with a cloud of regret over my head. can't take em to the grave with ya though. onwards & upwards.
Swiss Kubik is a very good swiss brand.
Now I want one! The Wolf Heritage link in the description forwards to your camera setup. Do I get an extra credit point? Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for pointing that out. Updated. Appreciated very much.
Save your money
Yes for automatic winding
Thanks for chiming in.
Thanks. Nice video.
idk but threads can either wear out pretty fast or maybe never .
