- This is my way of doing a 2 color customer powder coat job on a set of BMW wheels. If anyone has another way of doing this let me know I would love to try other applications. Thanks for watching.
By far the best coating I have see on youtube!
Thank you very much. We do the best we can.
I want to do this with my Hellcat wheels. Black face and red inners. Nice work!
Excellent skills..... Now I want to learn how to powder coat🤔.
👉Beautiful job man!👈
Awsome work
Im doing single colors
But if you would post how this process in more detail that be great
That looks freaking amazing! Really nice work! It gets me thinking.
Nice Job Tim
Pretty good?!!! Heck, they look fantastic!!! Excellent job!!! ☮️🖖🏽
vacuuming and wiping like that is a crazy job but there's no good way to mask it off unless you do thousands of the same wheels and have a jig/mask made for them..
I didnt know that Scott Hartnell paints wheels @ his free time :P
This is an art form😍
I think so too...nice work man!
Nice job, realy nice!!
So tempted to powder coat my wheels, but with a yellow car no too many choices.
Hi I have a bmw light silver car am looking at 2 different options either transparent coper or a bronze color what color I should go thank you
Dear Tom , Hi Again, How are you ? Think Good . Thank you for your answer . If it is not a big secret for you can you share your experience how you powder coat the wheels in two tones , because we see that you put the second layer on the normal temperature wheel and the take off the powder by finger, but when we put the powder by our gun on the normal temperature wheel the powder takes off from the wheel by air wich is coming together the powder from the gun . We working today that we put powder for the wheels after heated from the oven then it sticks good . What you think is it a problem with the powder gun ?? Thank’s
When you put the chrome down and take it out of the oven, how long before you can put your candy color over it? I hear that the chrome needs to be still warm but not too warm and not too cool because the second coat won't stick to the wheel. Any suggestions on someone getting into the powder coating industry? :)
Lower end guns won't provide a strong enough charge so you will have to hot flock a second coat. Upper end guns can provide a strong enough charge to penetrate the base coat and get a second layer to stick while the substrate is cold.
I'm also from Pennsylvania and have some wheels I'd like to get powdercoated. How could I get them powdercoated id rather pay to have them done right than have me buy all materials and experiment.
I am late to the game here, but also wanted to say that your work looks fabulous! Wanted to ask if you wouldn't mind maybe providing a link to the little vac you used.. Thank you.
It's called a scorpion. It's a small shop vac from home depot. Works great
@@adcpowdercoating3907 I'll have to look for one like that. Thank you for your time.
So what can u do with the recovered/waste powder?
Not to much. More than likely there will be dirt in it. Not worth trying and having to re clean the part.
Nice!! I thought you can’t vacuum powder or it will ignite????
i wanna learn this.. its so cool.. I have been powder coating spray in South Korea for about 4 years and this is just beyond my level.. you are great.. is there any place or anything where I can learn this?
What attachments you use on your vacuum when taking off black powder. I’m having issues finding good attachments
Was the blue cured , how did your gray stick so good if cold, cause I presume it was for you to hover what you want off ,thanks
Beautiful work, I am curious about the washing process however. Do you guys just use regular water or any kind of soap?
We actually dont use much water at all. We have a steem clean system. We try to use the bare minimum of water.
Do you fully cure each coat
Great work my guy! Question, can you prime them or does it have to be bare metal?
Your base all depends on the top coat. If your top coat is a trans color your base coat has to be shinny (chrome or silver).
@@adcpowdercoating3907 GOT IT. But let's say for prep, if my piece have dings or it's pitted, can it be body worked and spray gun primed?
nice work i have big hands and its really a pain when i touch the powder and have to start over.
Oh, we've had to start over many many times. It takes a while to get the knack!
I've seen a lot of videos and this one tops them all! I know you don't show every single little step and you sped up the obvious tasks. That way, you kept the video at 6:25. It would have been terrible if the video was 42 minutes long. LOL Telling us how much you charge for each rim was very helpful too, to emphasize to those of us who think we can do it, how much work it really takes. I might start doing some basic powder coating very soon. Your video, which is done at a higher level, is not for the casual observer who walks in off the street. It assumes that you have SOME knowledge. Fantastic job!
Thanks and good luck with your powder coating! It takes a couple years to get a handle on all of the methods, cure time variables, masking variables and powder types, but it's worth it. There are many days of just powder coating racks and racks of things black, but this type of job makes up for it.
Hi, I'm from Argentina. I wanted to know how I can get the chroming powder. Could you help me if I can buy the material and bring it back?
Are you putting the wheels in the oven at temp of 375-400 or are you putting them in the oven when cool and baking them to the recommended temperature?
Hey bud what vacuum are you using? I'll looking for a detailing vacuum like so and was wondering what you are using
To start with thank you for doing the vids they have helped me out a lot just getting started. One question i have that i can’t find myself. What are you putting in the valve stem holes so that you don’t have to use wire around it. I’ve searched everything but nothing comes up. Please help me??????
Go to any hardware store and get I bolts, nuts, washers that is it. Super easy any mark left will be covered by the valve stems.
Your right on the gold. But a customer wants it the customer gets it.
What confused me is that i didnt see you bake the blue
What did that job cost?
Nicely done!! Thanks for sharing your techniques.
One question:
What are all those hoses hanging next to the spray booth?
Are they for different powder colors?
Thanks
RingYoBell you are exactly right. I have about 15 different hoses. I try to minimize any contamination by using colored hose
What happens to the middle little hub on the wheel, and how do you coat that piece?
Were you using just your finger to get that straight line all the way around the face of the wheel?
Yes.
Nice job! I am a painter who does powder coating/wet paint. How did your colors not bleed into one another?! All I do at work is single color coats. Sometimes I use a primer then a top coat for powder but I thought If you have 2 colors so close that you may get a merging of the paints even if you wait for your parts to cool then shoot your 2 color. At least that's what happened to me when I tried to powder a part using multiple colors a flag with stripes I masked the parts off properly and tacked everything of perfectly and the colors still merged! It was white and blue though. Looks like you are using interpon akzo nobel paint and you running a gema optiflex 2. I hate the gema optiflex 2.
Straight6supra I think he allows each area to partially cure (10 mins)they he applies the next coat then another partial cure...if your pain is bleeding maybe your staic adhesion is the issue ..try a lower voltage on the first coat then raise it up on the next coats...hope this helps
Yeah, RanGer498 got it. You have to let the base coat cure for about 10 minutes (20 minute cure time powder), completely cool, then put the top coat on and do the wiping. You then cure the wheel for 20 minutes to completely cure everything. Masking with high temp tape it tough, especially on curved pieces where you have to stretch the tape to contour around the curve. You usually get tunneling due to creases in the tape. I'm not aware of a tape that works as well as pin striping tape for paint that can hold up to the oven time and temp.
How long do you pre bake after cleaning?
What does something like this cost with the 2 tone?
It really depends on colors used. if they will work together and the layout of the wheel itself. The price could very from $150 per wheel to as much as $350 each. There are a ton of variables.
What did you use to clean the outter part of the rim where you left the blue
Since you stripped all the paint down to metal.. why do you not powder coat the outside of the wheel (tire goes over)? Would it not corrode over time being bare metal inside there?
aluminum.
What are you "washing" them with?
How dangerousRAL coating is?
Nice work. Tell me why you don't use a primer coat ?
Powder coating does not need a primer coat like spray painting. Far better process with a much higher end finish
What gun settings are used for your second and third coat?
Los Los I typically keep the settings the same for all coats. I just adjust the kv settings to a lower level. You loose conductivity every layer you lay down. If your kv is to high you can get back ionization.
What type of media did u use to blast them and how did you get such a sharp edge in the inside?
We use Black Beauty which is a glass based media. Sharp edge was just the lip of the wheel. When we wiped off the uncured powder this was the nearest edge, so it wiped off clean.
What is best media and corse to do Wheels? Anyone out there have opinions? I’ve been told do first run with corse aluminum oxide then before powder hit with fine crush glass. But there has to be easier steps the Blasting twice???
We do things our own way. Might not be the best way. But it works for us. We use iron for all of the big and really rough parts like car frames. For the smaller and aluminum delicate parts we use the same iron but we recycle it after it's been used and broken down. It works great.
Did you put a primer ??? O what is that? I mean before color blue what did you put ??
Super chrome.
ADC Powdercoating thank you buddy.. nice job
I missed something, did you bake the blue before you added black right?
toyspeed71 yes fully cure the blue first
Hello , Can you pleaseconfirm are you use tribostatic or electrostatic gun ?
Electrostatic

Sir I I also provide powder coating service what's your powder cost
Your explanation is not very good because you cut the video and you do not see the whole process
when you sandblast the rim how much psi you go to get it striped !?
It's not a matter of PSI, Its a matter of CFM.
Ideally. A compressor that makes 125psi @ 200 CFM will do the trick. With the right blast pot & media of course.
Great job A++Can yo tell me what powder do you use ?
Фархад Сеидов we use mostly prizmatic powders.
Johnson & Johnson powder
Can you do similar job to motorcycle rims?
cavemanracing yes I have done a few sets of motorcycle wheels as well.
how much does a job like that cost for a set of 4 wheels?
Depends on design of wheel and colors chosen. Send us pics of wheels and what colors you are looking for via our website adcpowdercoating.com. Thanks!
What do u do for the Wheel center caps? There plastic not metal?
We don't do the centers if there plastic. We let the customer know the process and suggest options.
Sir,
What’s your options you guys give them. I’m very new and don’t have any idea what’s out there.
@@bjputvain tell them to paint them
Honestly I'm up front with the customer and I tell them we cant do plastic. They can get some spray paint and do them or bring them to an auto body shop and have them wet painted. Most people just spray them.
how much did you charge for that job for all 4 rims
daniel semet these were about 200$ per wheel.
Do you bake them at full temperature and time between each coat of color?
Yes, base coat is fully cured and allowed to cool. Top coat is then added, high points are wiped clean and the top coat is then fully cured.
Question, you do the super chrome, let it cure, then you did the blue, did you bake it again for that to cure before adding on that grey?
I wanna get my wheels powder coated on a 2015 charger
dope, nice ass job!
so you bake the apply second color bake again !?
Chris J I bake the wheels 3 times 1st for the base coat than the blue and the final full cure for the Grey.
actually baked 4 times. first time to dry (from washing) and probably outgas the aluminum.
I would say 5 times if washing and doing 3 layers. Media blast, blow off with air, bake (outgas), wash, bake (to dry), base coat, bake, 2nd coat, bake, 3rd coat, bake.
I wouldn't want to wash the media off then outgas and go straight into coating. I'm still new but have always media blasted, outgassed then cleaned with acetone on my parts, then blew them off with air. I haven't tried washing them with water.
@@armyssoldierboy I take it a clear coat powder lacquer wasnt applied as a final coat?
It would be a lot easier if the rims were 2 or 3 piece rims
Then you could just take them apart
I agree. We love 2 and 3 pce it makes things so much easier.
Was this all done in 1 day?
Powder coating was. Wheels were media blasted the day before. We did 1 test wheel first, then followed up with the 3 remaining.
Hi
What colour was the Blue?
Candy Ice Blue from Prismatic Powders over Superchrome base
Nice video, but your powder coating booth looks strange.
lol ( SUPER CHROME )
