I am 60 this year....and decided it is time to really learn to draw. I went to UA-cam to seek help with ink drawing. Figure that is where I need to start. Found "you" Alphonso. Sure glad I did. So far, you are talking and sharing in a way that I am totally understanding. ~~~terrie lynn
And that is extremely important as well as valuable, to be able to interact with the teaching style of the person. Not everyone is relatable. I totally agree and I salute you. Draw on!
this is probably one of the most important art videos people need to see. it will save everyone loads of time. its funny, i think what really keeps people from becoming artists are these stupid myths we're all raised to believe that hold us back from truly expressing ourselves. we feel like we need to overperform and get everything perfect rather than focus on conveying a message in our art.
***** keep up the good work. are there any other myths that i should get rid of in my head. i know another one is that some youtube videos showing a photorealistic celebrity drawwing might actually be a transfer or a light trace before the artist fills in the blanks. that make people feel rly low about themselves that they can't draw photorealistically even though they probably can if they practice and they should stop thinking that its just something most artists are born with (otherwise why are there so many youtube videos like that). I know i have put myself down because i saw other peoples work and felt i wasnt good enough, but i think this guy names sketchytrav said not everything is what it seems.
Practice reveals the magic. A child looking at an adult riding a bike without training wheels will always be in awe until they realize they can do it too (after practicing enough, that is) And remember, everyone's journey is different
As an artist, I have seen ALOT of art videos. This is the best one by far. I just follow along and dam, I learnt so much!. thankyou so so much! I have always over shade my art! so, again, thank you thank you thank you!
Your tutorials are very good. You have taught me so much. I am 77 and will be telling my great niece about it as she is keen on art. For me pen and ink is an interest and with these tutorials I should progress. Well done Alphonsus.
Very well done. This is a lesson that took me a very long time to come to maybe probably longer than it should have. It's so easy to overdo especially with cross hatching
I just wanted to thank you for an alternate view on working with ink! It's easy to grow up drawing and have your own style, but if you don't adapt the principles of nature/light, your artwork can lack a little and maybe not reach their full potential! I really love these tutorials, keep it up!! You're a wonderful artist by the way, awesome job.
I am a new subscriber from🇵🇭 and this helps a lot thanks man you are a true hero for us beginners. The way you explained everything its just so easy to understand.
Mr. Dunn is a consummate pen and ink artist in the true sense. If you follow his instructions, and learn to really draw, you can learn this art form and produce really beautiful work.
Thank you alphonso, really helping me, these little simple tips are so effective . I've always wanted to be able to draw but believed I haven't got the eye to draw.
Enhorabuena Alfonso por compartir tus métodos, aunque no entiendo el inglés, es muy fácil de entender tan sólo con ver lo que vas haciendo. Muchas gracias y espero que continúes enseñándonos. Un saludo
Thanks Alphonso for sharing your valuable time and knowledge with us. I purchased your amazing book "Pen and Ink Drawing a Simple Guide" which I highly recommend to everyone. Stay safe mi amigo.
Thanks! This is good advice, IMO especially for rendering natural stuff like trees, leaves, grass, wood & rocks. When i was a beginner i used to do so much texture that pen was really slow so I hated using the medium
Hello. First of all thank u, Isaw all ur videos. U're simply Awesome Thanks a lot. Please İ want to know if you can make a video about "Footsteps". I think it would interesting. ;) 🖒
Also, if you want to get good at shading, go and try and roughly cope some old anime works from Gainax or the likes, especially Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's style, because it's very simplistic and there's not that much flair or anything and it can be done to look as it should with a traditional medium. I've noticed that especially the shading on the clothing, the solid shapes, are something that if you can't get it right, you can't shade anything at all and make it look right in any style. It's all really just value, sharpness of the edge and contrast to me. I think the reason most people tend to over-render is to hide up the simple shadow part that looks bad, because it was essentially just scribbled in due to no practice. Because that cross hatched, rendered shadow was scribbled in, it's probably placed a bit weird too on round forms and the like, but you can "not get caught" if you over render it, but it will still look bad and take time. tl;dr Best way to practice shading is to look at real life, then a good example of how it's done then try to find that point via simple steps. For me it was essentially just shading cubes and stuff in different ways and essentially copying Sadamoto Yoshiyuki's shading to get some ideas for clothing shading. One thing I now pay attention to due to copying him is backlighting, most his pieces have backlighting on the clothing. It's just simply leaving some part on the silhouette uncolored or a lower value, but everyone forgets it. Copying is good if it's productive and you don't make any money.
Can you show how to draw a human figure and how is the easy way or how to get started in a basic prospected way what will be the best way to go about it as a beginner, thanks.
Alphonso .excellent demos, though is there any chance that you could do some thing that involves more objects with different local values as everything seems to be on objects that are white or there about,i know that you touched on it with the tube demo. Thanks alan.

It’s funny to me how your point is to keep it simple, and yet you seem terrified that you haven’t explained well enough. You made your point in the first 2 minutes, and spent the rest of the time repeating yourself.
@@alphonsodunn I do agree that you need to repeat yourself to teach people anything. From what I hear, it's adequate if you tell people what you are about to teach them, you teach the thing, and then you tell them what you just taught them again. Not that I'm a teacher myself.

"Say a lot with very little." I think that method what makes all of your tutorial delivered effectively to me.
This video is so good and I am not even done watching it. The permission to keep it simple is so huge.
Just decided to learn how to actually draw. Loving your videos so far. Thank you so much. Your tutorials are A++

thanks. Glad I can help
I love the fact of the earth being a sphere encouraging simplicity in art lol ill remember that
That was very helpful before I kinda got stuck drawing an arm and thought to myself that I always have to over render until I watched this
Glad I could help : )

Is it a good thing that these are mostly obvious things in this shading tutorial series?
Although it's good that you mentioned these, no one seems to.

Thank you so SO SO much!!!!

Great lessons.

I would like to contribute to your kindness and purchase your books. Are they still available?
Yes they are. Thank you
Just wondering how you do this without making it look cartoon-like? I find whenever I do that it looks overly simple.
vary your line quality and don't over simplify the form just the details
