Dear Alphonso, your tutorials are the most useful and informative I have found on youtube simply because you rightly assume that your audience is likely not to have the most basic knowledge on how to draw ... it's Sunday morning and I am sick in bed watching your tutorials and sketching following your instructions and I can see an improvement already. Thank you so much for giving your time to share the joy.
Wow! I just applied these concepts to a drawing of one of my houseplants and realized a misconception I've had for years. I thought if something was in the background it should be darker than the foreground but I was just creating contrast in the background that was flattening everything out. Not sure where I got that idea but now I see the difference. Thanks! you rock...
Most of these I already knew but the contrast is one that I am weak in. Seeing how you did your contrast made it more appealing for me to try. Thanks a lot! I love how you showed them all together too. Eager to see what else you have. :)
I loved this because I learned that you don't always have to go for the most detailed drawings, because I saw you take scribbles and put some more of those tips into it and you mad the artwork look so good!
Generally, those that can do and those that can't teach. You are a wonderful exception, as you do both well. It's obvious you love teaching and you excel at it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Best Regards, RJ.
I just started drawing again and the tip on the background line by itself was invaluable. thanks so much. I'm definitely checking out your other videos.
Alphonso, you are very generous with sharing your’time and your’knowledge, thank you.Now I have but one question, but it’s not about art. I am an Aussie, and I just HAVE to know...do you play cricket? LOL! Best wishes,Alan.
I have some basic ability to sketch what I see, but I'm so bad with perspective and detail. This video seems really helpful, it'll just take me a while to incorporate it probably.
Your videos are great... thanks for all the tips. I've been drawing for awhile so have seen most of these, but you illustrate them very well (no pun intended). I don't care for the background music you have added.
Thanks much...lol and I really dont care much for it either...I think instruction should be the focus...when ur in class you have no orchestra in the background..but, people have asked, so....:-)
This the first video I watched and from the first circles my ignorant ass was like "he can't draw!". Then I finish and now I'm like "teach me master Jedi".
Alfonso, I'm making a pencil drawing of an abstract pattern that is on a flat surface. I want to give it dimension but can't figure out how to do it. I'm using a gray value scale but that doesn't seem to be working for me. Do I have to give it volumn? But wouldn't that would change the design or is the nature of abstract flat? Suggestions?
Fantastic tutorials, it is clear one can learn a lot from them, but in my iPhone 5S I get the sound not quite clear and the picture a little out of focus, sorry.
Thanks Alphonso. I'm 62 and just learning how to express shapes and images with a pencil. You are helping me tremendously and I appreciate all you do on UA-cam.
Very well explained. Wish any drawing teacher had put it this clearly. Like you say its all stuff you kinda know but when you always put it in practice your works reflect it and it frees you up to imagine greater..
Providing the clear explanation, coupled with the simple diagram, and finally the demonstration that put it all into action (all within about ten minutes) really helps. Thanks! :-)
I wanted to say thanks for your clear demonstration. I drew the initial image, and now I am adding to it. I have an other cliff on the right side of the image, with a valley below full of rectangular rocks that have fallen off these cliffs. Thanks again.
I want to hug this video; it’s so helpful! Thank you. (It was so enjoyable to watch you conjure these rocks out of nothing. I could watch hours of it. Relaxing and instructive.)
We did have art lessons in school and also did drawings and watercolour paintings in class. But I can not remember our teacher having explained things so clearly and simple as you do. I think with those few simple observations/tricks taught in school many more people would keep doing art as grown-ups. Many people stop to do art very early because they are convinced the results are not good enough. And in many schools art is not taken as seriously as math or languages. Shame, really. I do love science and especially physics, but this is only half of me. The other half is nature, art, philosophy, animals... Art is what makes us human, isn't it? Although I knew most of the hints you gave here I really enjoyed the clearly structured, understandable and "optical" lesson.
I love that you said "recreate reality in simple ways". It makes art so much more accessible and less intimidating to enjoy fully when you don't have a ton of experience. Thanks for this!
I just noticed this video was uploaded 9 years. My prof used your video as a guideline to complete this drawing assignment and I got a 90 cause of you. Thank you and it was my first sketch. I hope all is well with you brother
Could this be applied to say, if I"m doing either a value painting or color painting of a landscape. Dark Greys OR Blues will be AT the BOTTOM of the picture frame to represent "closest to me" in the painting? And painting the Lightest Greys and Lightest Blues at the TOP of the frame to feel "far away" for the viewer. Leaving then Vibrant colors ( Reds, Oranges and Yellows) located more at the center of the picture frame to show the Focal Point clearly and without the atmospheric distortion. More or less? Thank you.
Legend. Something about all this over-sophistication and jargon involved in the visual art scene bothers me tremendously - and I think it deters newcomers. i feel like you often see this in artistic mediums: artists want to give off the [mis]impression their work is this otherworldly bastion of skill to impress ppl, but, really, _anything_ can be learned by *anyone* .
I just realised in all my drawings I am missing details that’s why they never look good. And detail are, shading, texture and folds. This is while my drawing skills is awesome but the piece never feels complete. I am mind blown and will start working on small item drawings and adding details.
That word: "illusion" an interesting way to view drawing is that you are basically ~reverse engineering~ how our eyes work to trick them - in order to replicate depth in 2D form you first need to understand how we perceive depth in the first place.
I have a question about drawing a field of flowers (as an example). I have a really hard time drawing or painting a flower field and how to vary the size of the flowers as they get farther away. I tend to make the flowers getting farther away too small or too big. Is there anything you can suggest to help me with this? I get the concepts on paper but when I do it my brain isn’t making my hands draw the right size- you know what I mean?
thanks! 1 semester in 10 minutes
OverthereLook lol :-)

And I am taking notes in my geologist notebook in order to remember these techniques.

I wanted to say thanks for your clear demonstration. I drew the initial image, and now I am adding to it. I have an other cliff on the right side of the image, with a valley below full of rectangular rocks that have fallen off these cliffs. Thanks again.
Thank you. You explained more in ten minutes than my instructor did during the entire semester.
Thanks. I hope you still learned something
I want to hug this video; it’s so helpful! Thank you. (It was so enjoyable to watch you conjure these rocks out of nothing. I could watch hours of it. Relaxing and instructive.)
Can you give any advice on drawing railway lines, please? Not straight ones, but ones that curve into the distance. Thanks.
Good video, pity about the background music. Please lose it as it is drowning your voice.
This saved my day! Thank you. Makes so much sense now.
: ) glad it helped
Revisiting again. Timeless jewel

Thanks, but, wouldn't the smaller boulders actually appear lighter in color being that they are further back in the picture? ( Just as trees would)?
That word: "illusion"
