  • Thank you for watching my first video. :)
I know this video has like a couple of glitches here and there (I edited this in CUTEcut...) and it's totally not perfect but I'm really happy that I finally found the courage to upload this! Additionally, I hope that my accent is not too obvious, because English isn't my first language... :')

Things you NEVER say to an artist while they’re working:
    - why are they naked? (It’s a sketch.)
    - where is their hair? (It’s a sketch.)
    - why don’t they have legs? (It’s a sketch, or it’s a halfbody/thigh shot)
    - who are you drawing? (9 times out of 10 it’s an original character that will take ages to explain, but some artists do enjoy being asked this - read the room)
    - what are those random lines everywhere? (It’s a sketch. They’re guidelines.)
    - you missed a pixel (Believe us, we saw it.)
    - looks wonky/asymmetrical/weird (Believe us, we know, and we’re going to be ruminating on it for the rest of eternity.)
    - Can you draw me/this character/this thing? (Are we able to? Yes. Are we your personal slave? No.)
    - (If it’s an OC) That character looks like (Thanks, now I hate my own character design for being unoriginal.)
    - Any sort of unsolicited criticism - if you’re an experienced artist and think you can help, ask before giving advice.
    Sincerely,
    An artist

Not gonna lie, I feel like being considered the art kid made me struggle to find an identity of my own ngl. Almost no one aside from my friends really knew me beyond liking art / being creative, and I feel like as a result, improving my art and creating art became the only thing i really allowed myself to do, causing further isolation because I couldn't really talk about latest shows, games, etc. with anybody since I didn't partake in anything aside from RPing and drawing. To this day, as I'm studying to be a professional artist, i'm struggling to create a balance between my work and trying to find hobbies.

She clearly didn’t understand cartography and drawing flowers are not the same thing…
Also, I’ve never actually experienced the whole class looking at me thing because there was always someone better at drawing people and animals who had gone to the school for longer (until recently I’ve always preferred drawing flowers and landscapes and stuff)

As a "music kid", relatable!! I play the piano and take elemental music theory classes to learn all you need to know about notes and music in general. The competitive band kids in my class whose ego was boosted way too much by their band teacher (who's our vice principal) has only made them lazy. They get straight A's in music class just because of their reputation for playing an instrument for the school band without even studying or behaving property in class. They quite literally believe that they're some prodigies who can play every instrument they get their hands on, and consequently, everyone from our class wants to get with them when it comes to music projects (even though our "musical talemts" don't even lift their fingers and end up not finishing the project). That has made them very competitive, so I avoid mentioning that I do music in my free time. Be careful not to become like them if you want to understand the real meaning of art and music!

Writing was my art, from the beginning I liked telling stories. Where I went to high school, it wasn’t very cliquey or centralized, there was just popular and unpopular. From 3rd grade I wanted to write, but I had no resources and I didn’t want anyone to know about it so I never asked. No matter how much I begged for my own laptop, my parents would always tell me no, even though they bought each of my older siblings their own (which they destroyed with porn and the Sims, but that’s another story that I get a guilty pleasure from.) It wasn’t until 7th grade, a hellish year I try to block out, when my mom got me a diary thinking it would help me through it. I didn’t ever use it to document my feelings, but I did use it to write proto stories that only made sense in my mind. In 8th and 9th grade I used my school laptop, but some of the stories were so vulgar and profane that I received several warning emails from the school to stop putting curse words in my documents. Over the years I had to make due with notebooks and papers I didn’t use for school. I built entire worlds simply through words and wrote my first few stories, some of seem pretty bad to me now but I never look poorly on them, occasionally I recycle old ideas I forgot about and integrate them into my new material. Of course this didn’t get me any good favors with the popular kids and other nosy trouble makers. One thing that always pissed me off was having people peer over my shoulder and look at what I was writing, especially if they weren’t a friend. My English teacher let us come into her room before class if we didn’t want to be in the cafeteria, but that attracted cockheads who just wanted to scream out whatever they had on their minds and not get in trouble. Constant pokes on the back of the head, a roar through my headphones, mentally belittling comments and occasionally being crowded and pressed by the “why don’t you talk to us” crowd, you know the ones, were common. I took a couple of creative writing classes but they never really struck me creatively, so I mostly restricted it to out of the classroom. Nobody really got to know what I did for my hobby because I never told anyone about, I was either afraid of being made fun of or having someone steal my ideas, the latter was more of a fear. I got my first job when I was a senior and finally bought my own laptop that I still use to this day. Now I can’t say if I was an art kid because so few people knew I liked to write and it wasn’t really a craft that everybody would die for like film and art class, but yeah I was an outcast and I did shit people would consider nerdy. I also did theatre throughout high school and that helped a lot with my mental health. One thing that always got me through it was never giving a shit what people thought and living by my own words.
I liked your story, it was relatable in many ways. I felt like I should share a tale from another form of art.

7:00 THIS IS SO TRUE. I’ve always found it weird how some of the students in my class would pin us “art kids” against each other. It really sucked because they would try to see who’s better, but in art it doesn’t really work like that. Everyone has a different style, and there’s one isn’t really “better” than the other. Luckily, me and the art kids know this, and I’m good friends with most of them.

I'm art kid, and it can be annoying at times. Whenever I'm at school and there's an art competition everyone goes like “Oh, they'll definitely win” or “That's gonna be too easy for them”. And also, if I can't do the art task to an absolute 100%, my classmates always so “Aren't you good at art”, “I guess that -insert name- is better than you at art” or “What happened?”. The worst part is that in my school, we have an event of giving out awards for different subjects, and once it comes to art I hear everyone say “They're gonna get the award” and if I don't then everyone gets disappointed. And what people don't get is that I got it before SO I CAN'T GET IT AGAIN!

You kinda just gotta say that plain and simple - say how many years it’s taken you to get to the point your art is at now, say it’s tough but it’s worth it for when people enjoy your art (and or your own reasons). That’s how I do it anyway. Most people don’t actually want to bother unfortunately, so it’s up to you if you even want to try to encourage them.

As an art kid, what's crazy is some people will literally think you can draw ANYTHING. And this is very, very.... Evident when there are art related projects at school. Once they know that i draw, they always expected me to draw the best art piece in class. And as someone who doesn't give equal effort to personal and school art projects (i barely give my best effort in school projects because its boring for me), it puts me in so much unnecessary pressure.

Socially, I noticed, with teens, being an “art kid”, immediately you’re put in to a lower “high school pyramid” section. Cause anyone who draws like, say, anime, in class is somehow always “weird” I mean it can be true in some cases, but not. Honestly it depends on what you draw, if you draw like anime boys kissing in class or any type of animal you’re gonna be seen as weird. But if you draw something chill I guess like a person or scene then you’re chill. You can seem quite and seclusive, and sometimes people don’t really talk or interact with anyone who seems too seclusive I don’t think . But drawing in class at all will definitely gain attention, a mix of positive and negative Id say.
I know this isn’t true for everyone, but it’s just what I noticed in my cases and situations. Some of y’all probably don’t care about whether you’re liked or not, but I do, and I learned that at first meet I probably shouldn’t mention I like to draw at first 😅.

I grew up an art kid and the psychic damage it left me with led me to going into business as a degree. Couple years later after realizing, I hated business, so I transferred to a different college and took up an animation major.
Being in art classes surrounded by art kids is great, except somehow I'm the biggest art kid out of the class of art kids. Multiple times my assignments are shown as examples, I'm praised, or my homework is hung up on display. In multiple classes.
It's so much pressure because drawing everyday isn't something I'm used too and when I have an off day the disappointment on my teachers faces or the confusion as to what the fuck they're looking at hurts.
I know I can do better, I have done better and I should be better because this is my schtick. It's so much pressure and it is so heavy uuugh

This year I did an access exam for enter into animation. It was "an art carreer thing" so the questions of the exam was to coppy a picture and make a little 8 frame animation. And well, I did that... but.... When I looked askance at the tests of two random people I saw that they had AN ENORMOUS LEVEL OF DRAWING THAT EXCEEDED ME BY A LOT. The drawing of one of them was practically the photo we had to draw but in black and white. And I didn't even understand the technicalities of traditional drawing (and I almost automatically failed the test for not bringing the right paper to do it. Thank goodness the other students lent me a paper).
That's when I brutally discovered that I am not at all prepared to be a professional animator. That I am one of those "art kid" and that I have a lot left to learn. But at least I know where to go so next year I'll try again and hopefully I'll get into school.

This is so true. People know you for art and that's beautiful, but there is always the expectation that you're gonna be majestic at it or that "you're born with it" while in reality (for me, maybe not everyone) it is part of who I am and I actually study exercise and look forward to excel at it. I love it, I'm doodling literally everywhere, all the time I have is put into my original characters and so alot of animation and design, but I still can feel insecure about it because I know there are people who are better at it than me, and honestly the thought having to be in a classroom in which im not the better artist (that never happened to me yet) makes me sad. Though I'm trying to work on it, I guess I'm too proud of my work. Art is so beautiful.

My father exposed me to anime at a young age and I came to enjoy the style to the point I incorporated it into my works. As the 'art kid' growing up, and during a time when anime wasn't as mainstream or easily accessible - mid to late 90's - it was always aggravating to hear the little quips from classmates and critiques from art teachers. (The most notable being " why aren't her bigger?" or "You won't be able to get far if you can't make that look more realistic"). Commiserating with the other 'art kids' and glad to see there are others who understand the plight!

  • @inkling457

I was either so quiet or so disliked in middle/highschool that no one knew that I drew.
People only knew that my BEST FRIEND at the time drew. And don't get me wrong, she's a wonderful artist! Always has been, always will be. But at the time, I was SUPER salty about it. And not just because I was envious of her praise. But because we were in the exact same class, sitting right by each other, and in the same fandoms, so often drawing similar if not the exact same things. People would always walk by and compliment her, but completely ignore mine.
It got to the point where people were voting "best artist" per grade for the yearbook, and everyone looked at her like, "Oh, what about her! She's such a great artist!" and I said "I'M RIGHT HERE." And ALL of them looked at me with the most puzzled expression. Like... wth. How.
Even on the last day of school one year(possibly the same year), after I openly drew every day in class, a guy walked up to me and noticed me drawing. "Oh, you draw??" "Y u p."
...Yes, I'm still a bit salty, if you can't tell already. But tbh i hated the people in those grades aside from my friend.

I'm also an art kid. I absolutely hate when people randomly start looking at me while drawing. It makes me uncomfortable. However being the art kid who also a very good student and the quiet kid I get to do group projects alone if I throw in some art of the people we talk about. I don't like how the teacher phrases the projects like "you can do these assignments in a group OR you can work alone and draw the main character". I'm well know in the class as the art kid so everyone obviously know it's about me but at least I can do these projects alone ig.
I'm also not the only one drawing, there's 2 other kids in class. A girl who draws semi-realistic pop art who is not really know because she also does crocheting. Theres also a boy who draw very pretty cartoony style art but really shy about it and most people in class don't know about it.
