Injector cup o-rings ,could you use NON- petroleum grease like silicone di-electriic grease that can be bought at Napa or Wal Mart , silicone won't swell o-rings, correct? Very good video , now I know exactly what cups and rocker shims are.
Would a fluctuating rpm gauge, that flutters 100 rpm at idle indicate need for a valve adjustment? My engine seems to kind of flutter at idle and under loads going up hill. Shop can't find any bad injector or bad injector cup. It's a 13 volvo D13 with VEB.
can you explain a little more about the shims and how to determining the thikness that i need on each valve ?and how do you do the math because i am confuse thank you
the space between the exhaust shim and the valve must be 1mm ! you measure the space if it is more then then 1mm you put thicker shim if it is less then 1mm you put thinner shim! When adjusting the engine break you need to use 3.5 mm shim ( do this after you are done with the exhaust valve adjustment 1st and your measuring shim is out of there)!
Currently doing an in frame on a Mack MP8 and started adjusting the valves today. My question is direction of normal engine rotation. Following the manual, I start at Cylinder #5. but they stress to rotate the engine in normal operation direction. DO NOT ROTATE BACKWARDS. From the flywheel looking towards the front of the truck, Im rotating the crank in a counter clockwise direction, which makes sense because the next cylinder marks that come next on the camshaft correspond to the cylinder order they tell you to adjust to, But it looks like other peoples videos are rotating in the opposite direction. from the alternator with a 24mm socket, you can only rotate the engine one way or else the pulley slips on the belt. Am I going the right way ?
I CAN'T ANSWER... YET. BUT I CAME WITH THE SAME QUESTION. When the count given was from back of Engine at 1 my brain glitches and I retreated here. This guys content is awesome for sure, but you find that often where "relative bearing" of the truck "front" is used to signify the "front" of the engine. We're starting a cup/injector/overhead job in the next few days so I shall return.

Great video, very instructive. question got D13 Passing coolant into the oil. Check head and head gasket with block tester and no problem, checked erg coolant and all dry. did a coolant pressure test with no leaks anywhere but coolant disappears and finally did an oil sample test and came back 0.83% coolant in the oil. I been told this could be due to bad injector cups. do i have to replace the injectors or reprogram after replacing the cups?
For coolant to get into oil through injector cups it need to get past injector seals as well so you would have diesel in your coolant and vice versa. Might be oil cooler, or coolant leaking past cylinder liner seals, or maybe air compressor somehow.
Do you have to run/pre-adjust the overhead to proper clearances before you replace the injector cups/injectors, so that when you put the rockers arms back on you will already have the proper clearances set ahead of time before the removal of the cups/injectors?

Sorry for late reply, I use ratchet and 24mm socket on alternator to turn engine, that way you dont need 2 people. If it slips get another 1/2 ratchet and put on tensioner to make it tighter. Make sure the alternator nut doesnt come loose. You can start adjusting on any cylinder depending where your camshaft is
Do you reset the overhead adjustment everytime the rocker shaft is removed even if every part goes back in the same place, say for instance when changing one injector can you just adjust that cylinder or is it a better idea to just do all 6. The engine I'm working on had the overhead adjustment done maybe a month ago.
I had the injectors replaced on a d13 2012 Volvo at a volvo dealership and now the engine brake does not seem to be working. Dealer refuses to check it What can I check for?
Take valve cover off, check that engine brake solenoid is connected, if it is fine then remove the solenoid and make sure o rings that were installed correctly and not torn. Replace them when reinstalling solenoid Cardinaltruckservice.com

I have same sound coming from the driver side of the engine. I got d12d engine and as rpm goes up the ticking gets faster too, what could it be. I havent done valve adjustment for over 400k miles.
Hey thanks so much for this info. I just pulled the valve cover off of my 2014 D11. The markings on the camshaft are different and there are not any engine brake rockers. Crankshaft won't turn over either... the alternator pulley just slips in the belt. Do you have any other tricks or do I need to buy the tool that turns the flywheel?
Hello I just found your channel. Good information. I have a 2012 Volvo 2012 D13 with 667943 miles and it is taking a longtime to start. I just did a Oil change,changed the Water Separator, fuel filter and Air filter. I even let my mechanic keep it overnight and they said it started for them my problem is not that it starts it is taking to long to finally catch. I am not a mechanic just looking for some suggestions of what the problem could be my mechanic is a Volvo Dealer all they work on is Volvo's and Freight lines. I live in Chicago Illinois. Do you have an idea of what it could be just trying to fix it now before I gets to cold don't want to be stranded. Thank you for your channel.
Those clearances seem pretty loose. Obviously you cant feel the resistance by watching it but it looks like there is no resistance at all on those feeler gauges. Should have some resistance ideally. When loosening the exhaust bridge shim hold down bolt, use a spanner to hold the bridge when cracking the nut beacuse on occasion its possible to snap the pin. Nice work though, interesting way of winding the engine over. An easy way is to use the correct tool and a ratchet strap on a bar and ratchet the bar on the tool from outside the truck whilst watching the cam markings.
Like I said they sell special tool for turning engine but alternator truck always works for me. Get wrench and Allen socket and tighten it up and try again, may need to put 1/2" wratchet on tensioner to make it tighter so belt doesn't slip
The clearance for Exhaust valve valve is 0.039. You subtracted 0.20 from 0.39 on Cylinder 1. You got the right clearance 2.5mm shim but you said the wrong numbers, and you showed the wrong numbers.
@@cardinaltruckservice3753 so I want to see will you take is on a mac I got in my shop has a MP7 2016 Mack gu713 had a check engine light injectors 1 2 and 3 all had a code I thought injector one was bad so I unplugged injector one and left the rest of them plugged up I ran the truck at idle and then code came back except it was just for injector 1 not injector 2 and 3 unplugged injector to to make sure and sure enough injectors 1 2 and 3 had issues or code am I right in thinking that injector one is shorting out causing 1 2 & 3 Bank to seem faulty any advice is appreciated thanks again

At the minute 7:30 are you using two .5 mm gauges to set at 1mm??

John Gunnerson Anything that will help get the o ring in without tearing it. Manufacturer says you can use coolant but that grease should be ok
Just a little dish soap works great to lube o-rings. Been doin' it for years.

+Lupco Gurcinovski its similar but the exhaust brake adjustment is different and clearance on exhaust is 0.063 I believe.

No, that's not how adjustment procedure works. All clearances are set after replacement parts are installed

@@robertbowen1197 check fuel lines and fuel filter housing for leaks first. Most common reason is injector cups though.

Maybe, hook up a spare injector to injector one connector, see if you get codes.
