Have you heard of japan and china creating hydrogen engines???? @adeptape
What does that valve solenoid do that’s at the front of the motor passenger side on the outside front
I’m not a mechanic, but I do find your diagnosis and repair videos interesting. Your presentation skills have matured nicely.
Thanks for taking the time to make your videos. I’m sure they’re more work than we realize.
I think we need more shop shenanigans from the background
Love your videos, great top set technique. Just a suggestion, after I do a top set, I re-torque all the lock nuts and then double check with a feeler gauge that's 0.001" bigger than the target adjustment. If it's super tight or doesn't fit then I know I've hit the target. On CAT engines, the tolerance is normally 0.003" so not really necessary, but on Deere engines there is no tolerance.
Very interesting I'm not a heavy diesel mechanic just a novelist like your educational videos though ! My diesel is a toy to what you work on just a little 2002 5.9 24 valve Cummins ! Bought the truck new it now has 329455 miles on it has not had any major work done to the engine jus regular maintenance ! Still running great ! Knock on wood !
Reminds me of my old tyme , Diesel Tech Classes back in High School , 79 - 80 yeah getting old , Still have my Diesel Engine Book , Of all the things I've Kept !
Great video as ever and it's nice to have the music back on the destruction of the week intro.
I missed the destruction of the week song!
I live in Oregon so getting to your shop is no problem for me.
I look forward to having you wrench on my ride.
Thanks for the education Sir. Stay safe and healthy.
I like the Snap On feeler gauge set with the quick change handles. The only thing that's kinda annoying is the handles are all the same color, but a strip of colored tape or paint pen on the feeler works well.
What I end up doing with my green handle set is I paint pen and E and an I on the appropriate gauges.
I have engine feeler gauges on key rings with brass tags with the engine family stamped on the tags. C12 /C15, and Cummins too.
Yes, miss this kind of vidz!
Have a good weekend cat man I just turned twelve thousand miles on my brand new cat re-man. I can't wait to get this factory turbo oh.
Just was doing the same overhead on friday. You are so right about making sure no wires get pinched. Nothing like the feeling of wrapping up and putting the last bolt on the valve cover only to notice a now crushed wire peeking out around # 6. PS the parts guy at Cat told me that Cat is going to be stopping all parts and support for their over the road engines. I dont know if its true, but he told me that
As far as I know they are still fully supporting them. Many of the same parts fit the equipment and truck engines, so it would be hard for them to stop specifically truck engines.
After 45years of diesel work finally finished and retired 🎉
Great video. If you are doing a valve set on an overhead cam engine loop a tie strap through the hole in the feeler gauge.Saw a mechanic drop the feeler gauge on a Volvo D13.Rear cam gear drive system.Dropped when doing #6 hole.Took 10 hours to find the gauge.
Part number for a 0.037 feeler gauge is 1535239, used on low HP 6NZ Jacobs Brake if I recall. I dislike the IVA wire splice. What I try to do first is to remove the old connector off the wire. Re-spring the connector to get it tight on the pin. Once that is done, I take the splice connector apart and put the repaired wires in the new connector. Odd thing I like to do is when I get ready to run the overhead, I rotate the engine two rounds to make sure the valve train is seated in, if I had the rocker arms off.
Standard bolt formula, if you have a 3/8 shank and you multiply it by 3/2, 3 x 3 =9. 8 x 2 =16, wrench size is 9/16, reverse of this is divide. So 9/16 = 9 divided by 3 = 3 and 16 divided by 2 = 8, so shank size = 3/8. Now sometimes you get into a odd size. So a 5/16 shank would be 15/32, so as you can see you off just a little bit. In that case you add or subtract 1/32 of an inch and you get the right number. Works most of the time, always an exception in some cases, works on larger bolts, better.
Cummins 3871452 .037 feeler gauge. Crazy expensive, must be the shipping from the Himalayas. Great video, thanks !
almost certain the cat service manuals give a part number, and jacobs has them in all sizes,
Always a good idea to plastigauge the bridges to the stems I've had it happen where they make no contact can cause catastrophic failure I never trust anyone to verify because a overlooked part is still your responsibility as a tech
It's always a perfect Adept Ape video when the screaming goat makes an appearance!
2:49 i have this happen to myself and many other people i know so usually when someone asks me for a bolt i either ask for the bolt or call it "M10" seems easier to remember that the measurement of the head doesnt matter (specially allen/torx or triple square bolts)
I know it's over kill but I've always used a dial indicator instead of feeler gauges when i can. For me it's easier to be consistent.
In Britain, Whitworth and BSF spanner(wrench) markings refer to the bolt diameter, rather than the distance across the flats of the hexagon. (Wikipedia)

Do you ever driving your vehicle and listening to Rigs and diagnosing them.
Just curious. 🙃
Great video! Bring back the music!!
Lube o rings for sure! And don't be like the mechanic who did my 3406b and tear the oring and had oil leaking everywhere
🫡Glad the old destruction of the week music is back!!!
23:28 " licht drag is subjective "
True True. I use a go, nogo method. IF 10 is light drag then 11 dose NOT FIT.
Iv never thought of putting the rockers on that way with the push rods.. didnt know you could pass the intake and exhaust rods in like that last. Iv always loosened all the adjusters up and fumbled getting everything lined up. Using sockets on the rockers to keep the push rods from falling out lol. Its especially hard in a bus. Iv done countless c13 that way. Gotta try this way on the next one.
Edit: just realized you had the rocker cover off. Bet that trick with the push rods won't work with the rocker box in place
I would just screw in the outer Jake bolts till intake in exhaust rodes snug against rocker arms
Brilliant video.👍👍👍👍👍👍
When you said "I'm not gonna film...." I thought the next line was going to be "the mating of a Idaho sasquatch". Needless to I was relieved to no end. And a bit disappointed.
Hey, do you think you'll be checking out the newest info on the Edison Motors truck?
I love your videos
Perfekt Work
Your Great!!! love the videos
Enjoy your weekend Adept Ape

From Nick Ayivor from London England UK 🇬🇧 ⏰️ 19:18pm Good Evening
Thank you Nick!!! Hope you have a great evening.
Terminator, also is mine favorite film.
CAT engines too
New banner at the start of the video looks great maybe hold it for a few seconds longer and fade it out with the music and also change the music to something with electric guitars otherwise great work huge improvement
Hey Josh, not meaning to be nosy, but in your shop is the work flat rate or hourly or both depending on the assignment. Thanks
I know he was working hourly ~8 years ago at a previous CAT location if that helps ;) He also expressed a preference for hourly over flatrate.
Do you know if there is a kit to replace the piston pins on a 3176 motor to one with a snap ring holding them in. The plastic plugs on ours broke resulting in a tic and sleeve damage. It doesn’t seem like a good design.
Good job
Hey Josh can you tell me what brand marker you use ?Thank you
When you are oil filming the fasteners then torquing- is it a wet torque or dry torque value you set wrench to?
I watch Josh's Caterpillar engine videos even though I don't possess any such. Don't even drive any such anymore.
I am surprised Caterpillar does not manufacture a 37-thousandths feeler gauge for its mechanics to use ...
Part is offered under a Cat part number used on Jacobs Brake.
Not related to this video but if you order a heui pump for a 3126 it doesn’t come with the fuel pump anymore or fuel pump mounting oring so keep that in mind
Any info on how to adjust c13 valve?
what do you think of Volvo equipment?
When you say "almost impossible" if your just doing an overhead adjust, do you pull the iva housings? Or is it possible just a pain with them installed?
Is there something different about the camera attachment here? It seems to be a lot more shaky than usual.
Great vid, nevertheless.
Damm I love this channel
Your platinum kits must be different than ours bc I have only done 3 engines with a c15 c13 and c10 none of which came with Rocker or iva hardware.
Where do i send in my destruction of the week?
I like it
Can anyone tell me please what that solenoid valve is hanging off the right front side of the block it connects with two wires of the valve cover what does it do?
Second from VAMC Indy 👊🏻💪🏻
What's going on with a caterpillar C-15 engine has blow back or blow by going on .. little smoke coming out of the oil fill cap .
It has 1 million miles on the engine.
Any suggestions??????😮😮
Yeah...its got a million miles, probably time for an in-frame.
ive got a pic of a c13 rocker arm broke an a video if i can find it ill send it to u
Hi I'm looking for that injector kindly assist
👍
Do crankshaft turn the opposite direction in the southern hemisphere?
Yea and exhaust go's out intake Lol
Only on Wednesday's.
If you ask anyone 13mm is the head size, like everywhere, unless it's a caterpillar thing
Not true. I’ve been in the trade about 15 years now. Most tradesmen refer to the bolt size. Not the size of the head. But I also work for a cat dealer
😎👍
@10:15 you are stating that the torque adapter doesn't change the torque setting? Ah, if the effect is making the torque wrench longer I believe you are getting more torque than indicated on the wrench.
Well, you are both correct and incorrect depending on the angle the torque adapter is in relation to the torque wrench head. If you have the torque adapter on a horizontal plain with the drive head, think directly to the right or left of the head, you are incorrect and it has no effect on the torque output. If you put the torque adapter directly up from the head it increases the torque and if you put it below it, the torque is decreased, in which case you would be correct
@AdeptApe I did notice you had it at 90 degrees to the head. Thinking about it now, I see where I mislead myself. Thanks.
❤ 🎉
Actually , when using metric fasteners, you will never have an 8mm , 10mm or 12mm etc thread.
The correct sizes are M8 , M10 and M12 etc.
If you use the correct terms , you will train the monkeys not to confuse the head size with the thread size - they are never going to find an M10 socket or wrench
37ths is nothing ISX and X15 Cummins isx 8mm x15 7mm gap on jakes
How can I vontact you
Is it the same for kcb model
Similar assembly, but the valve settings are different.
@@AdeptApe thanks for reply brother the manual I’m looking at says intake 0.38 and exhaust 0.64 is that correct?
Well, most KCB engines are .015" on the intake and .025" on the exhaust settings, not sure your exact serial number settings, but they are usually the same. Not sure what that translates to in MM, but that sounds about right.
@@AdeptApe 2005KCB44203 hadn’t put attention to the plate on the motor it says int-0.38mm and exh-0.64mm the truck is a 2006 Kenworth w900 short hood
@@AdeptApe what do you think about the c13 brother
...😊
Speak Greek to me, baby. I'll catch up.
Oddball, out!
Old engine there. We do not even build those anymore.
People that identify hardware by the head size should have their tools confiscated. I worked at a case ih assembly plant as a tester and you wouldn’t believe how people try to describe what they want. I had a woman come up to me one day and ask if I had an 11/8th’s wrench that she could borrow…….
👍
Can anyone tell me please what that solenoid valve is hanging off the right front side of the block it connects with two wires of the valve cover what does it do?
IVA oil pressure solenoid
@@AdeptApe i have a c13 that quit running out of no where so i replaced the transfer fuel pump and it still wont crank so i took off the fuel return line and pressurized the fuel tank and waited untill fuel came out of the return hose but it still wouldnt crank not unless i spray either
@@AdeptApe does the c13 have a fuel shut off cylinoid if so where and i know my 3406b had one
👍
