Mary, your take on the nostalgia factor for we 80's kids was totally spot on! I did feel that the Gozer redo or revamp plot was a tad weak, but I believe that this was not an attempt at recreating a modernized GB, but something more along the lines of a tribute. The sincerest form of flattery, being imitation and such. I was a huge fan when I was a kid. The original movie was brand new around the same time that I was. So not only is the original around my same age, but for Halloween it was an easy costume! Plus, my name is Ray IRL and I thought it was the coolest thing to have a character named the same as i. Made it even better that he was a Ghostbusters! A treat to be sure as it's not the MOST common of names! Anyhow, it's beautiful to me to see the passion you out into your reviews. It really takes me back! Thanks for the journey down Nostalgia Lane! Keep em coming!

This movie was exactly what was needed from a Ghostbusters sequel/update/reboot. Good God this movie had absolutely no business being this damn good. It was fun, the cast was damn near perfect. Phoebe's deadpan was absolutely spot on Harold Ramis. Fin Wolfhard was great. Paul Rudd. The way they kept it about the new cast and only brought the old cast in for a brief thing but they didn't save the day they had to work with the new group. The nostalgia, the new stuff... it was just perfect. And they did a shocking amount of this stuff for real. Egon's truck in the intro... it getting crumpled by the ghost was a practical effect. As was the field of traps. Those were real, not digital at all. They built a few hundred of them for the shot. They wanted to keep the feel of the original. Truly a great movie. And you nailed it, that ending with Egon was perfect.

I apologize for the long post, but I have been a fan of Ghostbusters my whole life and have followed the cast and crew stories for years.
Ivan Reitman (RIP) did the first 2 films with Harold Ramis who helped write it. They had planned a trilogy, but plans fell through and when they were ready for a third Bill Murray didn't want to do it, and Rick Moranis was taking a break due. Rick's wife tragically passed away from cancer and he wanted to be a full time Dad to his two boys. The original story for the third was used for the videogame that came out on the Wii allowing the remote to be used as the blaster. Harold Ramis passed away around that time and his story with it. That was when the remake with an all female cast was announced. The remake didn't do anywhere near as well due to severe glaring issues that didn't sit right with many fans. Shortly afterwards Jason Reitman son of Ivan Reitman began pitching the idea for Afterlife. He grew up on the set of the first 2 films and loved the franchise and felt the fans deserved a true to story sequel especially after the remake failed to capture audiences. Jason began making the new film with the original cast agreeing to do cameos with the exception of Rick Moranis who was indisposed with family issues I believe regarding his youngest son. Ivan lived long enough to see the film released and to see it become a success. He voiced in an interview how proud he was for his son to make the film and that he got to see it before he too tragically passed away early this year. A sequel to Afterlife has been announced with the new cast, and several returning legacy characters. Rick Moranis is rumored to return for that film.

My parents saw Ghostbusters in their 20s and so my brother and I were raised on both Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II. While I had no disliking for the 2016 reboot, it just didn't hit the same mark as the first two whereas Afterlife felt like the perfect conclusion for the original four characters. Egon was my personal favorite of the four and I grew up to really love Harold Ramis as both a filmmaker and actor, so the way they treated his passing and honored him in this film was not only smart but unbelievably touching. I genuinely cried in the theater the moment I saw that hand appear to help Phoebe and by the time I saw the words "For Harold" appear on the screen, oh I was just a total mess of tears and sobs.
On its own, Afterlife is a strong movie already but as a part of the Ghostbusters universe, it was perfect in my eyes. I was honestly happy if Afterlife was going to be the final movie in this franchise but now, I can't wait to see how they follow it up with Frozen Empire.

There is a line in the original movie from the Keymaster where he states that Gozer has come to Earth multiple times in the past. The original movie also referenced the Tunguska Blast which is one of the dates on the wall in the Gozer temple. The Ghostbusters didn't catch Gozer in the first movie too, they just pushed it back into it's own dimension. All of that is why I'm fine with them using Gozer in this movie. The original movie left it open for Gozer to return.

One thing that I'm properly excited about is that they're making a new Ghostbusters game that is coming out next month, where you either get to be a new Ghostbuster working with Winston, or Rey can introduce you to occult mysteries out of his bookshop (which gets mentioned in this!). It is even co-op and, from the looks of things, competitive. A little bit of the whole Dead By Daylight "humans versus the supernatural" kind of thing with being able to play either side. I'm really curious to see how it comes out, but it looks amazing. I also really loved the 2009 video game they did. It honestly had a great story, and you got to engage with so many things from the original movies.
