I don't even trim with a weed eater anymore, I went from pulling weeds by hand, burning weeds with torches, trimmers with guard, no guard,I've evolved and now I'm using a low flying helicopter that I maneuver to an upside down position, i get a 26 ft swath. The downfall is that I occasionally chop trees, power lines, houses, and a bunch of other infrastructure when i try to trim.around flower beds.... I'm thinking of putting a guard on the helicopter shaft to protect the "engine".
Whats a trimmer guard 🤷♂️ 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The first thing i take off my new weedeater
The second thing to go in the trash. Right after the instructions/safety paperwork.
@@rockyhull2614 lol
Lmbao🤣🤣🤣
After sifting through the comments, I have to agree, no guard. Maybe it’s just mental, but I like having that extra into or two of trim line out. 🤷♂️
It is just mental, but when your out in the field all day something as simple as having another inch of trimmer line out can brighten your day lol
..... yup a couple inches is good, any more and then I think stihl has a valid point...I've advance too much line before and it puts too much load on the engine...you just need some common sense😂😂😂.
Brian's Lawn Maintenance yup that’s what she said extra inches jk guys, yup no guard just because I like the pain from small pebbles and mulch hitting me lol
Ive never altered any trimmer. Ive got trimmers that have run daily for 5 years or more. Ive never understood removing the guard. If your hand eye coordination is that of a daily business operator the amount of line let out with the guard on is plenty and you can trim effectively against fence or house. I edge, trim, skim and level high spots and blend divots with one trimmer with a guard.
When you mow for a living a long trimmer line allows for less body movement throughout the day. It also blends the trimmer with the mow much better and faster.
Keepin the guard on is a good look anyway. Jillian walking her baby would be scared of a weed whip without a guard.
@@Kuhlyedascope69 who cares
@@MRTLEW01 me
Just sheep taking off the guard. They all get the exmark 30 inch mower and the Scag. Sheep
I have 6 stihl fs90r weed eaters, 2 of them are 5 years old and still run every day all day with no guard. If I have to buy a new one every 5 years- who cares lol
Exactly
Agreed
I never burned out a clutch on a weedeater and I been doing this 40 years with no cover
In 5 years each of those trimmer would’ve made more money than what you spent in the first place!
All bs, of course stihl or any other manufacturer can't tell you because the safety police, plus it gets them out of tons of warranty work,
I've run both without the guard and with the guard. Stihl FS55, FS90, FS94. Can't tell any difference in quality, speed, or the amount of crap that gets on me. I prefer the guard on because if I bump too much line out (hitting a rock for example), it cuts it instead of the trimmer bogging down. Only the tip of the line is cutting anyway. Having more line out doesn't seem to save any time.
Been doing it over 20 years as have tons of other people. As long as you keep that head greased, never an issue. EVER. Don't believe everything they tell you.
Exactly! Some people don’t understand proper maintenance or care.
How do u grease ur head?(trimmer )
@@ptslawns4641 there's a screw in the side, take it out
Says the corporate representative, who only cares about the longevity of their product. As a 20 year buisness owner/operator, I say take off the guard. The ware and tare on my body is significantly reduced and besides, the tool is expendable...my body is not. The guards don't guard very well anyways. Wear your safety glasses and you'll be fine. Lawn care pro's pay off the trimmer in a month or two. Lawn care will eat your body up. Your body is way more important than a collection of metals, plastic and fluids. "Keep your shaft in the grass".
No thanks
Bro you can still do both and trim with the guard 😂
Maybe these guys should design the engines to work efficiently at line lengths that literally everybody uses
Echo 3020 has a 20 inch cutting swath with the guard installed. I take it off because I can see what I'm doing better.
Remove guard and use auto feed head. Problem solved..........
He’s just saying what’ll keep him out of legal trouble.
It's indeed correct if your trimmer line it too long, you will feel strong vibration this an indication it damaged by your head gear and flexible cable inside the shaft
No guard sir!!! I can run it faster harder and get around corners!! I run a stihl like I stole it!! 🤣 Wide open!!! Give it hell!!!
I hate the guard the line is to short.
Maybe Stihl should make their product a little
more robust...
I got one for free. I think I will run with the guards.
Hell ….. I trim in shorts and flip flops. Nobody’s got time for a guard man.
I have a FS56 with no guard on it from day one with no problems and its 4 years old and runs 8 hours a day
I use a weedeater because there are places where i just can't go with a mower. Ditches, humps all kinds of obstacles. That's why the weedeaters were invented in the first place. If i put the guard on i am back to square 1. Might as well just brute force with the mower lmao because that flimsy plastic will chip away when it hits harder bumps or gets into a ditch anyway.
Typical dealer horse crap. I have 2 FS85 trimmers that are at least 12 years old and had the guards removed the day I brought them home.
Bollocks. Haven’t run a guard ever on my trimmers, never had one fail.
What he is saying might be true I never use the protective shield and I have weedeaters 10 years or more
I’ve ran 3 redmax trimmers for 4 years with no guard and I’ve had no issues.
Scantlin Lawn Care that’s because redmax is amazing bro! Love em!!
Scantlin Lawn Care Redmax all the way, never had a problem with redmax.
Redmax trimmers will probably never die.
I think thicker line puts more stress on the engine what do they have yo say about that
What about when used with a non-bump head? Ie: a "universal" aluminum head, which takes 2 or 4 individual nylon strings? They are only about 2 cm longer than the automatic cut off length that the guard creates. Any advise on this set up (as opposed to the bump-load head?) with regard to removing the guard?
As long as the sides are even and the engine isn't bogging then it isn't an issue no matter what they tell you. If I use my guard and give it full throttle it will bounce off the rev limiter all day due to being severely UNDERLOADED. Having a longer string would keep my RPMs down and HELP the engine.
@@SaneAsylum Thanks for the reply! I've since been using my device without the guard, and find it to be lighter, and easier to handle (besides also being able to get into tight spots more easily!). No guard for me !!
Remove the guard on day 1. Feels good man
No guard for me How do you get into tight tricky areas with a guard on ? I’ve just replaced my Stihl FS94RC as the clutch went and it had 310hrs on it sure I’m happy veering that life out of my trimmers
INteresting, when you google the issue, the officials keynoted all say to leave cover on, does the consumer care, no! They want it off. Obviously you don't want to lug the engine and obviously dealers can't sell products without the cover
Ok, I now think Im convinced NOT to remove the guard on my new Toro string trimmer.
My guard just fell off my brand new stihl weedeater 😡😡😡😡
Do you think he believes what he is saying ? I have several fs90r that are over 6years old. Never had an issue with anything. Run them all day. Never replaced anything on them only more string...Edging with guard on takes 3 times longer to do good quality trimming. This actually is inspiring me to make my own video showing the difference between with guard and without. The shaft inside stihl is far stronger than any other company’s. I have been running stihl for 20 years.
If you don’t use a guard you can weed whack so much faster
So it can handle a tree trimmer attachment,a edger attachment , a blade but it can not handle a slightly longer string. Hmmmmm
Makes sense to cut the string short so you will run out quicker and buy more trimmer line
Buy an Echo. They don't care if you run the guard.
Which model do you like?
@@bblawncarekc I have a srm=3020t and it is a beast. I bought it from a big echo dealer and he told me that echo did not void warranty if you removed the guard.
Blake this guy doesnt use a weedwacker all day. I would never use the shield. I have never had any problems.
Never had a issue running no guard btw I'm stihl using the og90s with original gearbox and clutch
I killled 3 dewalt battery trimmers before I realized I was burning up the motor with the string too long. Probably not as big a deal on good quality gas trimmers. Need a company to make a 20" timmer🤣
Was you using motor on head type??
@GEEMAN5811 yep, 20v dewalt trimmer no guard. They all died quick. I have the same one now for over a year with the guard on even though I hate the guards.
@@B.r.i.a.n.1 yeah I purchased the motor on head first they really don't like the extra line being out and you can here the motor slowing ... I purchased the split boom. Motor on shaft way better no guard. You can throw that extra line out and it doesn't slow down if you go crazy and try 1\2 meter that will affect it.. overall found split boom really good 2 seasons no guard still works a treat ..
wont hurt a thing
the guard is for noobs
Thank you for the advice
When cutting, the trimmer is always under load... It should be well within operating tolerances to remove the deflector.
No Gaurd equals more productivity which means lower labor costs and faster in and out times and that means more lawns per week. That generates more profit..... If the trimmer isn’t “designed “ to handle that load then I guess knowing they build trimmers for guys who want this ability, maybe they should build a trimmer to handle this load. I’ll throw away a $400 trimmer every 2 years and replace it for the labor savings and higher productivity. An old trimmer is full of good parts anyway ( head, bump feed, gearbox, shaft, clutch and springs, recoil, gas tank, handle, triggers) just my opinion. Thanks for the video Blake.
I understand that you’re exactly right. However, they could build it to withstand what we want and still sell it with a Gaurd. When we take the Gaurd off we become liable.
Okayyyyyy
echo has a new trimmer with a 20 inch cutting swath from the factory the 3020 which is their most powerful trimmer. Why doesnt stihl increase the cutting swath on their most powerful trimmers like the 130 or the 240 so people dont have to remove the guard.
Don't care, I just need it to last a couple seasons. I bought it to make money and operate the way I need it to operate to be quick and efficient. If Stihl keeps up with the repair refusal threats I can find another brand.
I DISAGREE!!!
An inch or two shouldn't harm the motor. It's so frustrating trying to cut high grass with so short strings. It would take FOREVER. Since the guard doesn't really do its job in protecting me, I've had rocks hit my forehead or my face. Instead of wasting strings when you are trying to get the job done in an effective way, remove the guard and your performance will increase. I'm always finding myself trying to bump for more strings when the regular cut is way too short.
Remember this is a commercial rated trimmer. Stihl is a good quality. So, it should be able to handle the load as long as you can feel it if it's under too much load. Just back off from cutting too much at once.
Ya it may be slow down the engine but its still enough power to line trimmer for weeds. It gets more done faster & labour is more expensive then tools.
these mowing guys man, maybe one for quick edging but running all your gear like this is crazy.
Arizona has alot of yards with alot of rocks. I would think a guard would be needed for that right?
So stihl can't handle the extra load but echo can?
My question is why do they add a screw to the guard to take it off
They just say that so they don’t have to give you the warranty if you take it off
keep the guard on you waist trimmer line asap cuts about an inch off every bump u do 🤦♂️ if you feel the engines heavy simple just spool it to shorten the length no biggy
We have old fs 250s......no power issues here. Bump that string out nice and long!
No guard for me I hate those guards.
Good information to know. I've been debating whether or not to take my guard off. Now I think I'll leave it on. Thanks.
A weed trimmer should give over a thousand hours of use with a guard on I wished the one I was running for someone else had a guard I would still have my front teeth it pick up a large rock
Haha you people have never heard of a visor
No guards.
How about stihl builds one to handle 7-8 inch line since so many people do that
If it can handle a saw blade and cut 3 inch trees I bet it can handle a little more than 16.5" of .095" line...
As long as you're not running it wide open without the guard, how could it possibly hurt it?
If the line exceeds the cutting swath from the guards cutter, you are not maintaining the correct length for the machines maximum cut. I have used them without the guards before with a larger cutting capacity and the engine is under a load. The engine is not turning the correct speed which cause it to heat up more by the flywheel not turning fast as it should be in the engine housing. Also the clutch gets stressed alongside the whole drive train. I learned this the hard way. Also the guards were designed by engineers for the performance of the equipment. Also it's safer as well. Also when the line is so long, and you come in contact with something it slings it at a more longer distance.
@@markclark1605 thanks 4 sharing
Great video! Something that is very important to note.
the fs90s we have at work besides carbs and filters and sparkplugs there all original internals there from 2005 and they have had the gaurds pulled off since brand new. they run amazing still always start by the second pull
damn bro you gotta do something about that acne
No guard for me, took mine off my 100rx 5 years ago when I bought it and haven't had an issue yet. More productive without it and better quality as well.
Completely pointless. These trimmers are so cheap. Almost throw always if they last a year they still earn their money.
Relativity
Just let the industry know you can afford more so they can raise prices on you then will you be happy stihl?
Redmax is better trimmer overall
Does removing the deflector void the warranty?
Yes
Just put the guard back on before taking it back to dealer.
@@pearsonebfd1 😂😂
Who cares my echoes never go to the shop
Yes it does
No guard, ever. Hard to get a smooth cut and trimming takes too long with a guard
