  • This time of year, the bay fills with the annual herring spawn. Many people catch these herring which are good to eat or used for bait. This time, I just wanted to go for the eggs which are in my opinion, delicious!

I love herring eggs! In Alaska we eat them still on kelp or the pine tree branches. I usually eat them raw since Ive been eating them all my life, but typically I eat it (may sound gross) with seal oil. I also love them with soy sauce and found that the entire taste was complimented with fresh carrots. :) And I agree as they are very underrated. They're delicious!

@@kidbogus3731 not OP but yes we lay Hemlock branches in the ocean for the herring to lay their eggs on. After they have we pull up the branches and feast! Haha.
I have helped my family harvest eggs in Sitka. It is very fun and nothing beats eggs fresh out of the ocean.
It is an absolutely amazing mix of flavor. Ocean meets mountain

Hate how people get upset about him eating it and letting people know about it like wtf its food and if people wana eat it then so be it, like we dont yell at vegans cuz there eating all the leafs in world, like its just dumb on how you can criticize peoples way of living granted he can buy that but back in our native times we didnt buy much food we hunted and gathered so dont get mad at him for doing something that natural to most humans

    • @BAlvn-yr6ej

anyone that would get mad about what he is doing here is really a fanatic with issues..this is perfectly natural and sustainable and really he isn't killing anything either. now if he makes a video harpooning porpoises off the coast that might be a little different! lol

Gawd I miss herring season in Alaska. The native people shared their delicious food with friends and wow that kept me alive growing up. They threw the branches into boiling water and then we dash with butter and soy sauce 😋🥰 crunchy jewels popping in your mouth. Tastes like fish broth or pho soup base. Amazing food and made me feel incredible afterwards. So healthy

I'm really enjoying your videos! I learned how to castnet this year and was out there at the Point, possibly at the same time lol. Did pretty good, my friends and I caught 2 full buckets, and then spent about 5 hours processing. So much work. Saved the eggs and milt and fried up some herring fresh, then smoked the rest. The eggs on seaweed is so tempting but I'm too grossed out by the thought of seaweed growing in that oil refinery water - I figure the herring at least is just in the bay to spawn. But I'm sure it's fine if you're not eating it often. Anyway, thanks for the videos, you fill a nice niche in the UA-cam catch and cook world :)
